Product Review: Smores Ice Cream

Posted on May 31, 2009. Filed under: Product Review | Tags: , |

Hello again. As I mentioned yesterday, I really want to get my hands on a pint of Stuff’d ice cream from Turkey Hill Farms. Well, tell me if you find some because that stuff is better hidden than the Easter bunny. After getting over my disappointment, I “settled” on some Smores ice cream from Edy’s. I’ll admit, I’d been thinking about this flavor for a while now. I’ve suffered many Smore cravings since the summer started. And I’m a complete sucker for the “limited edition” thing.

The claim for the ice cream is “a light marshmallow and chocolate based ice cream with marshmallows, chocolate chips, and a graham cracker swirl”. As I opened up the carton, I noticed it was a pretty soft texture; I’m more of a fan of hard ice cream since I like to take my time eating it, but I kept an open mind. The first thing that jumps out is the little marshmallows floating around; I had to pick one out, and, to my great pleasure and surprise, it was incredibly soft and fluffy just like a marshmallow should be. Big thumbs up for this.

After measuring out a portion with my brand new kitchen scale I was so excited to use, I dug in. The base had no chocolate/marshmallow distinction in my opinion, but it did have a lovely, not overpowering chocolaty flavor which I was not disappointed in. The chocolate chips were also very pleasant, tasting a lot more like dark chocolate than milk. But the real shining glory came in the graham cracker swirl; coming across this was like coming across gold, with its crumbly, sugary goodness. The cracker was not soggy like you might think it’d be, and the sugary flavor really stood out against the light chocolate base.

In Edy’s Smores, we’ve found a winner. I assure you that half gallon won’t be in my freezer for long. I highly suggest anyone goes out and gets themselves some before it’s gone; it is a limited edition batch after all! So Stuff’d can go stuff it because I’ll have more Smores.

I Was Tagged!

1. Once you are tagged post a picture of where you blog.

My Desk

2. Feel free to tell us a little about your space, or explain certain items in more detail. Or not.

Leftover brown rice California rolls from Trader Joe’s makes the perfect afternoon snack. My poor cactus in the corner fell over earlier and now sits in a ridiculously big pot, but he makes a nice bookend. Other than that, I think it’s all self-explanatory
3. Link back original post.

http://startingblocks.wordpress.com/
4. Tag five other bloggers to show their blogspots.

I don’t know 5 other bloggers, I only know the one who tagged me so far.

What are you wearing right now? Black BUA sweatpants and a grey ringer T that says Get Your Greek On(I think it’s a fraternity reference but I’m too much a classicist to see that).

What’s the last thing you read/are currently reading? Food Network Magazine. Next issue’s not until July 😦 At least this one has some great burger ideas for summer.

Do you nap a lot? Believe it or not, I never nap. I just can’t stand it.

Who was the last person you hugged?
Maybe my grandmother back at graduation?

What’s your current obsession/addiction? Probably runnersworld.com forums or else I wouldn’t be on here. Or maybe burgers, I’ve been eating soo many recently and am having Chile & Lime chicken burgers tonight!

What was the last thing you bought? Greek yogurt, peanut butter filled pretzels, and MorningStar veggie buffalo wings at Trader Joe’s

What are you listening to right now? The TV, which is on Food Network, but now that I’m conscious of that I’m channel surfing.

If you could have a superpower what would it be? Teleportation.

What time do you usually wake up? 7:45 every day

Name one thing you can’t live without? My parents, which makes me so disappointed that I lash out at them at times.

What time is bed time? 11:00 every day

If there was one place you could be right now where would it be? I love my room and would much sooner wish other people/things here than myself somewhere else.

Clif Review

Posted on May 28, 2009. Filed under: Product Review | Tags: , , |

My first post of substance! Through my travels, I’ve become quite familiar with all the sports bars out there. A particularly large force in this market is the Clif company with their medley of products. Let me start off by saying that, of the original product, I am not a fan. Clif bars themselves have the worst texture and appearance. And I find the title is always much more enticing than the actual flavor; the only one that I would buy and eat again is the Carrot Cake flavor because every so often you get a bite of something that taste like cream cheese frosting.

The female equivalent to the Clif Bar is the Lunabar. Again, I’m just not a fan. The texture of the crispy rice just leaves me wanting a rice krispy. I’ve bought the smore flavor twice(God only knows why) and both times have opened it up only to be disappointed by the lack of graham cracker or marshmallow flavoring. Both of these are big strike-outs to me.

But I will gladly get down on my knees and worship the Clif company. Why you ask? For the next two products. First up comes Z-bars, the Clif Bars for kids. The peanut butter, the chocolate brownie, the honey graham, the blueberry crisp, they’re all amazing. They taste like what they promise, they have a great soft texture, and each provide 30% of your daily value for calcium. And they all have 3g protein and fiber to boot. The next amazing product is the Peanut Butter & Jelly MoJo Dipped. I was really hesitant to try this one. I knew if I opened it up and it tasted like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich that I could make with healthier ingredients, I’d be pissed. These, however, have something special about them. Perhaps it’s the real peanuts, or the sweetness of the jelly they use(grape, I believe). Whatever it is, this is the perfect peanut butter and jelly sandwich you can carry in your pocket all day.

One last product of note are the Nectar bars. These are Clif’s response to Larabars: They’re made of date puree and whatever flavor it is. The dates make these little things so delicious and sweet and each bar provides 2 servings of fruit! My favorite is the cherry pomegranite. The tartness of the cherry is a delicious contrast to the sweetness of the date, and cashews provide a great crunch and savory factor.

So there’s my opinion. In summary, go out and by yourself some Z-bars, available at Hannafords, target, Whole Food, and Trader Joes. They never disappoint and make you feel like a kid who has just been baked a treat from his grandmother.
