Can I Petition A Petition?

Posted on May 1, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Happy Saturday! I for one am more than happy to be closer to Summer and living at home with a full kitchen and refrigerator. Have you all seen this petition yet? Basically, it’s a petition for Obama and his family to become vegans for their influence. Uhhh, what?! I fully support those who are vegans, or vegetarians. But how on earth could anyone want to dictate how another person eats? Especially when some of those are just little girls?

If I posted this when I first heard about it, I’d have some not-so-choice words, but I think by now my minds mulled it over to speak better of it. If anything, we should be preaching tolerance–tolerance of those who have a different way of thinking or path in life. This petition shows no more tolerance than the intolerance you could find against vegetarianism in a Southern cattle farm community. More importantly, you can eat ethically and aware without being a vegan, which is part of what Michelle Obama has already done through her time in the White House. What do you think of this petition? Besides that it’s going nowhere, I think it’s a little rude. And–as always–I’m on a mission to show you can eat well and ethically without devoting yourself to any label.

Naturally Nutty Vanilla Almond Butter

Naturally Nutty Vanilla Almond Butter

I had this little bowl of Naturally Nutty Vanilla Almond Butter and a scoop more before hitting the gym. What is it about almond butter that makes me just want to eat out of the jar?! It’s so delicious! Especially with a little vanilla. I felt extra fueled after that.

10 Miles In 88:59

10 Miles In 88:59

Fueled enough to runner a faster 10 miles as the last training run before my half-marathon. That feels weird to even think about. Enough, enough. Lunch!

Maple-Walnut Oil Salmon With Craisins And Golden Raisins, Baby Carrots, Hemp Oil Greens

Maple-Walnut Oil Salmon With Craisins And Golden Raisins, Baby Carrots, Hemp Oil Greens

Motivated by Kath, I’ve been getting in to canned salmon for extra omega-3’s without much fuss. I mixed mine with maple syrup and walnut oil for something packed with even more essential fats and tasty! Over the top was Tierra Farm‘s dried fruit and baby carrots, with salad dressed in Foods Alive hemp oil dressing.

Organic Red Delicious Apple

An organic apple for dessert!

Trilogy Synergy Kombucha

Trilogy Synergy Kombucha

On my way back from my grocery trip, I picked up a trilogy kombucha at a cafe because I felt a little down about the whole trip :-/ A lot of it was on the store’s sale, which was good. But I probably could have saved more in coupons if I was better organized. At least I didn’t blow the project cleanout challenge too much. And you can’t say I don’t eat what I buy:

Soy-Free, Dairy-Free Chocolate Sundae

Soy-Free, Dairy-Free Chocolate Sundae

Isn’t it dreamy? My whole point in going was to get some whipped cream to make a sundae. They didn’t even have regular–just non-fat sugar-free or Rice Whip, which is dairy and soy-free. The latter seemed less processed, so I went with that and made a sundae with So Delicious chocolate coconut milk ice cream. The fudge sauce was simply cocoa powder and agave nectar mixed together. Voila! OK–the Rice Whip tasted REALLY fake; if you’ve ever had rice milk, just imagine that in an airier form. Besides that, this Friday sundae was delicious and a perfect before-dinner treat 🙂

Grass-Fed Burger, Sweet Potato Fries With Mozzarella Daiya

Grass-Fed Burger, Sweet Potato Fries With Mozzarella Daiya

If Obama wants to eat his beef and have his vegan cheese, too, I fully support that! I made a 1/3 a pounder hamburger but undercooked it far too much 😦 I really wanted to try the daiya so instead of eating it straight from the bag I made some sort of vegan cheese fries–YUM. This was better than mozarella cheese; it was crack. I’d be lying if I said I’m not planning on having it again today(maybe twice).

Endangered Species Dark Chocolate With Deep Forest Mint

Endangered Species Dark Chocolate With Deep Forest Mint

I love mint. I could eat a salad made of mint leaves. This bar doesn’t have a great minty flavor like alter-eco’s mint bar. But it was what the Whole Foods I was at had, and I don’t terribly mind it.

Oatmeal With Chocolate Almond Butter And Coconut Milk

Oatmeal With Chocolate Almond Butter And Coconut Milk

And some oatmeal with homemade chocolate almond butter because nowhere near me carries Justin :-/ Oh well, now that I’ve pinned down the secret to making good homemade chocolate nut butters, I’m less enthused to go out and pay $10 for someone to do it for me.

This morning I woke up nice and early to not run. Maybe it defeats the purpose of a rest day to keep yourself from sleep. But I want to be nice and tired tonight so I can go to bed early and sneak 8 hours in somewhere before the race.

Oatmeal With Cookie Dough Peanut Butter

Oatmeal With Cookie Dough Peanut Butter

Cherry 2% Fage With Almonds

Cherry 2% Fage With Almonds

I love Fage, especially their cherry flavor. Unfortunately, it’s about expensive as they come around here. At least it’s on sale at Whole Foods this week. The cherry here tastes just like the cherry dips at Dairy Queen! Yum! Next time I’m trying full fat. The peanut butter–again, since I’ve figured out how to make cookie dough nut butter, I’m less enthused about paying someone to do it for me. Besides, this one seems really fake since half of it melts over oats and the other half is still solid :-/ Until it’s gone, though, I’ll live it up and enjoy it.

What are your thoughts on mint? I made my gluten free chocolate brownies with a lot of mint extract once and was told it was like mouthwash; hell, I thought they were great! The more mint, the better in my opinion. Even though it’s often paired with chocolate, I wouldn’t mind a dessert exclusively with mint as the flavor. Speaking of chocolate, here’s a Bubble Chocolate Giveaway. Now I get to go to my very first race expo! I hope it’s nifty.

Cheesecake For Breakfast

Posted on April 20, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , |

I can’t offer you some recipe for oatmeal that will make you think, “Wow! This is so good, it’s almost like cheesecake for breakfast!” Instead I can say, if you want cheesecake for breakfast, have cheesecake at breakfast.

Vanilla Bean Cheesecake

Vanilla Bean Cheesecake

Let the jaws drop. I guess I still am feeling a little defeated from last night, because this morning, nothing was appealing. Oatmeal wouldn’t have done anything for me. And this cheesecake needed to be eaten sometime. All that was a big “Why not?” to me.

Vanilla Bean Cheesecake, Pomegranate Chobani, Cookie Dough Cashew Butter

Vanilla Bean Cheesecake, Pomegranate Chobani, Cookie Dough Cashew Butter

“Oh thank God. He’s got protein in there”. On the side was a pomegranate Chobani and a ball of cookie dough cashew butter. Gotta get those healthy fats in there, too, right 😉 To be honest, I don’t feel guilty in the least. There are times when you crave cheesecake for breakfast and times when you crave oatmeal for dessert. And I know my nutrition overall is good and that this is not a habit. For instance, I craved and ate oatmeal last night before bed.

Oatmeal With Chocolate Hazelnut Butter And Coconut Milk

Oatmeal With Chocolate Hazelnut Butter And Coconut Milk

Swap the two around and you have an indulgent night and a back-on-track breakfast. It was definitely one of those times when a big and warm bowl of carbs felt like just the right thing. I love Justin’s chocolate hazelnut butter, but not quite as much as the almond or peanut flavors; this one melts too much, I think because it has more palm oil maybe? 😦 And I had to  got to open a new can of coconut milk…

Thai Kitchen Coconut Milk

Thai Kitchen Coconut Milk

But I’m really not loving this brand. It was Thai Kitchen, organic, and on sale. I thought it would be better than store brand, especially when the water and milk separated and I was able to drain that off, but it actually becomes more watery on top of oatmeal :-/ Back to 365 brand, it is!

Gummi Bear Vitamins

Gummi Bear Vitamins

Oh, I’m also eating my multi-vitamins along with breakfast, too. That makes the cheesecake healthy, right? Now the real question is, do you think they’d let me join the cast?

Hungry Nights And Cookie Dough Mornings

Posted on April 3, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Last night I played Hungry Hungry Hippo. Except there was no board game and I was the hippo.

Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Covered Egg

Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Covered Egg

I was really really excited to try the new Trader Joe’s milk chocolate peanut butter cup. I mean, how could it not be good?!

Soy Yogurt With Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Egg

Soy Yogurt With Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Egg

I diced it up and put it on some So Delicious plain soy yogurt sweetened with alcohol free vanilla NuNaturals. Trader Joe, I feel you took advantage of me. This was not like an all-natural peanut butter egg 😦 The ratio was all off, and I don’t even think that was really peanut butter; it was more like chocolate peanut butter. I think the best all-natural peanut butter egg will be just coating the inside of a plastic egg with chocolate and filling it with peanut butter–done.

Nature's Path MMMaple Pecan Bar

Nature's Path MMMaple Pecan Bar

I was equally really excited to try the 2nd of two bars Nature’s Path sent to me; this one was MMMaple Pecan. This smelled ridiculously good. It had a very “New England” aroma–love it! The flavor was a bit of a let down after that. It wasn’t really sweet, or really salty. It just was. But it also was probably the healthiest of any of the Nature’s Path granola bars I’ve reviewed, so kudos for that. But did that fill me up? Not a chance

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Maple Almond Butter And Maple Butter

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Maple Almond Butter And Maple Butter

If this wasn’t about to fill me up, I was going to retire, pack my food bloggin’ bags, and move to Boca Riton. I made a batch of pumpkin oats topped with Justin’s Maple Almond Butter and a little bit of maple butter with sea salt. Oh God this was good, and filling! It was a little cruel to eat this while watching The Best Thing I Ever Ate: Bacon. I. Love. Bacon. And I love maple bacon, in particular maple tempeh bacon. Two more days of Lent and I’m not giving in!

Raw Cashew Butter

Raw Cashew Butter

This morning I slept in embarrassingly late :-/ The part that bugged me was just not knowing when to run anymore. I decided to eat breakfast first, run later. In the meanwhile, I made raw cashew butter, since I loved Love Raw Foods‘ so much. It was actually one of the easier nut butters I’ve made! I just turned on the food processor for 10 minutes and voila. And what could be better for breakfast than freshly nonroasted nuts?

Oatmeal With Cookie Dough Cashew Butter, Lucuma Yogurt With White Chocolate

Oatmeal With Cookie Dough Cashew Butter, Lucuma Yogurt With White Chocolate

In some plain yogurt I added 365 brand agave and Navitas Naturals‘ Lucuma Powder which made such a nice, malty sweetness, and on top were a few white chocolate chips. In the oatmeal was Homemade Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Cashew Butter. Yes, you read that right.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Cashew Butter

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Cashew Butter

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Cashew Butter:

  • 1 scoop cashew butter
  • A few, scant drops vanilla extract
  • Chocolate Chips
  • 1/2 teaspoon agave

Oh. My. God. If you like cookie dough at all, you must try this. The vanilla entirely makes this dish, but you have to watch out not to overdo it. It’s even better microwaved a little so the chocolate melts in to the cashew butter. Do it! Speaking of doing it, I just need to get out there and run before the day gets away from me. We have big plans for dinner; let’s just say the cashew butter was just a prelude 😉

Shaking Off The Funk

Posted on March 31, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Good morning from Providence! It feels good to be able to say that again. Maybe tomorrow I can blog from Houston? I’ve never been but anywhere it’s not raining sounds good to me!

Scrambled Eggs, Oatmeal With Peanut Butter And Sunflower Seeds

Scrambled Eggs, Oatmeal With Peanut Butter And Sunflower Seeds

Oatmeal With 365 Peanut Butter And Sunflower Seeds

Oatmeal With 365 Peanut Butter And Sunflower Seeds

Yesterday morning, I was still a little “sugar shocked” from my birthday eats, so I decided to avoid added sugar and sweetness for as long as I could. For breakfast, it really wasn’t that hard; I just swapped out yogurt for scrambled eggs and used plain old 365 peanut butter with sunflower seeds on my oats. That peanut butter is probably my favorite plain, and it’s only $1 with the new Whole Deal coupon! That’s insane!

Baby Carrots

Baby Carrots

Before lunch, I munched on some carrots where I might have coffee. The natural and voluminous sugars were enough to hold me over for a while and still feel fresh. But then it rained. And rained. And rained. So I had tea.

Tazo Rest

Tazo Rest

Since the goal of the day wasn’t to make me miserable, I went ahead and added a little stevia to this. It was just enough to bring out the essence of the Tazo Rest tea, which is amazing.

Steamed Broccoli With Soy Sauce, Tuna Salad With Sunflower Seeds

Steamed Broccoli With Soy Sauce, Tuna Salad With Sunflower Seeds

Lunch was kept real simple and real fresh I a can of 365 tuna with 2oz plain Chobani and salt; that’s the ingredients for the perfect tuna salad, in my mind. That went atop some simply steamed broccoli with soy sauce and then was sprinkled with roasted sunflower seeds; those are the best seeds to add for flavor, crunch, and protein in my book.

Elan's Chocolate Frozen Yogurt

Elan's Chocolate Frozen Yogurt

Around 3, I came to the realization that my life is not complete without chocolate; I just can’t fathom otherwise. And I’m OK with that since I always celebrate my chocolate tooth with good quality products. Did you know some Hershey’s products contain 60% vegetable oils and can’t even legally be called “chocolate”? Yuck! Elan’s chocolate frozen yogurt has simple, natural ingredients, probiotics, and a stellar nutrition panel. I say, scoop away!

Banana Goodness Bread

Banana Goodness Bread

Baking this banana goodness bread with hemp seeds instead of flax was such a good idea it makes it a little nuttier and sweeter. I was worried the sugar crust was gone the day after but with some time in the toaster, this was just as crust and nice. Is it just me, or is nothing better on rainy days than sweet breads and coffee? Except this was without the coffee. Boo.

This week was so sporadic; I’d planned to be home for the half-marathon, and my birthday, and then I had no clue what I was doing. I thought I might drop by campus to pick up books and stay home all week. But after 2 days of being trapped home and not having a great time, I realized I was in a funk, and being back in Providence might help me defunk(or at least I’d have work to keep me busy). At that, we packed up yesterday afternoon and drove down to RI.

Dill Salmon, Parmesan Cauliflower

Dill Salmon, Parmesan Cauliflower

Morrocan Chickpea Salad

Moroccan Chickpea Salad

Dinner was eaten at Whole Foods; do you know of a better chef? I kind of wish they had gluten-free pizza so I could have partaken in the pizza eating(everyone else had pizza), but I was also happy with what I got. The parmesan cauliflower was insanely good; I wanted so much more! Except it cost an arm and a leg from the salad bar. I think it’s a winner for Easter lunch, though. The Chickpea salad didn’t taste any exotic, but I could eat chickpeas morning, noon, and night on their own.

Pomegranate Chobani With Coconut Oil Chocolate, Coconut Creme Egg

Pomegranate Chobani With Coconut Oil Chocolate, Coconut Creme Egg

When I was settled in, I made a snack and turned on The Biggest Loser midway through. I didn’t forget my low-sugar challenge; in fact, I just tried to exercise a modest and healthy chocolate tooth, with a special treat I found at Whole Foods.

Coconut Creme Egg

Coconut Creme Egg

If it’s shaped like an egg and made by Lake Champlain, you’ve just got to get it, right? 😉 The “coconut creme” in here didn’t taste particularly exciting that’s coming from someone with about every form of coconut except the actual coconut in his dorm. The yogurt with coconut oil chocolate, however, was great.

Coconut Oil Chocolate

Coconut Oil Chocolate

So great, I needed to taste the other half of the bar. At least it has no refined sugars? That’s my excuse. That completely took care of my chocolate tooth, though, and so I went back to my “raw roots” for one last dessert.

Oatmeal With Raw Sprouted Almond Butter

Oatmeal With Raw Sprouted Almond Butter

I forgot I opened and reviewed Better Than Roasted’s sprouted almond butter. It’s good, but I think I prefer their cashew. If you want a really nutritious nut butter, you don’t need to go raw, just look for one with the skin ground in; that’s the best thing you can eat!

Perfect Foods Fruit & Nut Bar

Perfect Foods Fruit & Nut Bar

Dare I say, it felt good to get up at 6:45 on break and start running again?! The Today Show, the gym, the endorphins–I just missed it all. I scarfed down my last fruit & nut Perfect Foods Bar and got there surprisingly, I wasn’t the first or only one!

12 Miles In 1:46:11

12 Miles In 1:46:11

I broke my run into two segments of 6 miles, and finished in 1:46:11; thank goodness that’s not my half marathon pace or I’d be so off my goal.

Oatmeal With Cookie Dough Peanut Butter, Greek Yogurt With Milk Chocolate Peanuts

Oatmeal With Cookie Dough Peanut Butter, Greek Yogurt With Milk Chocolate Peanuts

Breakfast was pretty standard fare between oatmeal with chocolate chip cookie dough peanut butter(I got a new jar in my time at home) and chobani sweetened with agave and topped with milk chocolate peanuts. I was watching on The Doctors yesterday(first off, big mistake there) about how peanut particles are easy to get lodged in the lungs and trachea, which is why infants should never eat it. It also can account for a rough cough in adults, which I always have and now I can guess why. Anyone else out there with this? I’m going to be coughing after this meal, that’s for sure. It’s also made me scared to death to feed babies anything other than mushed veggies. I don’t think I was fed peanut butter, but I’ve heard admissions of coffee being slipped into the baby bottle. Any other baby feeding admissions people want to get out there? 😉

Carboloading

Blue Skies

Blue Skies

Today looked so beautiful out. But would you know it was below freezing with the windchill?! Seriously, March, what did we do to p*ss you off? Even though it was so cold, I wanted to run outside for practice for tomorrow. I know I could have taken a rest day. When I thought about it, however, I realized all the times I’ve set distance PR’s I’ve also ran the day before. I’m not racing this half-marathon for a time; what’s important is that this will be my longest outdoor run by 1.9 miles. And so running as usual seemed the best thing for me to do on the day before this race.

9.57 Miles In 1:20:47

9.57 Miles In 1:20:47

I think I was a little faster just because I wanted to get somewhere warm 😉 After the first 3 miles, I couldn’t feel my fingers Note to self: BRING GLOVES tomorrow. After that, I started to get into it; for the first time I realized you can be cold as hell and still enjoy your run. I got into the music, regained circulation, and ran the planned course. I was happy to have thrown lunch in the oven before I went out, too, so that was ready for me.

Maple Tofu, Roasted Broccoli, Hickory Honey BBQ Chips

Maple Tofu, Roasted Broccoli, Hickory Honey BBQ Chips

Instead of pressing the tofu, I threw it in as was at 300 degrees for 90 minutes with maple syrup on it; it ended up baking perfectly! Low and slow, baby, low and slow 😉 I also threw in some broccoli while I showered. And on the side I had a snack attack of hickory honey barbeque baked kettle chips for some carboloading and deliciousness. Aren’t the chips at the end of the bag just the best?

Decaf Cappuccino Frozen Yogurt

Decaf Cappuccino Frozen Yogurt

Instead of a cup of decaf coffee for dessert, I went straight for the good stuff and made a cup of Elan’s decaf cappuccino frozen yogurt. It was definitely too cold to enjoy outside so the window shot was all I got. Eating this, my dad arrived and we loaded up the car with stuff to bring home.

Organic Apple

Organic Apple

On the way, since I was told we had no groceries back home, we stopped at Whole Foods in Bellingham, where I quickly grabbed an organic apple that was up front. Cortland? Empire? I can’t remember, but it was damn good. I love going to a grocery store you haven’t been at in a while; I feel like there was so much new they now carried!

Groceries

Groceries

We got plenty of groceries including yogurt, produce, and random snackage. My favorite items were the frozen ones, of course.

Purely Decadent Cookie Dough Coconut Milk Ice Cream

Purely Decadent Cookie Dough Coconut Milk Ice Cream

I just had to grab a new coconut milk ice cream flavor of So Delicious: cookie dough. I was thinking about buying this yesterday for a Friday sundae but all I could find was the soy variety 😦 Once you go coconut milk, you can’t go back–it’s that good. And I like that the coconut milk ones have a lot less sugar and taste creamier.

Purely Decadent Cookie Dough Coconut Milk Ice Cream

Purely Decadent Cookie Dough Coconut Milk Ice Cream

Mmmm. I think the “vanilla” base could have been better. It was very “vanilla” when I was hoping for “vanilla bean”. Other than that, the chocolate speckles were nice and of course the gluten free cookie dough balls were a bit of heaven. When are they not? Here’s a new product suggestion: Just the balls.

Organic Apple

Organic Apple

I snacked on another apple while making dinner. It was so awful and mealy :-/ What was with that, Whole Foods? At least it was organic, but can’t doing the right thing also taste good? And I also reunited with my dog in this time 😀 Who couldn’t have been less interested in me. He smelled, anyway.

Sweet Potato With Black Beans, Herbed Turkey Burger

Sweet Potato With Black Beans, Herbed Turkey Burger

We grabbed USDA approved ground turkey at Whole Foods. In it, I mixed rosemary, salt, and dill, and made it into 4 quarter pounders. On the side, I was craving a good ol’ roasted sweet potato with black beans. Mmmm, this combination is amazing; how come I forget about it so often? And plenty of carboloading in that 🙂

Hmmm, you know what else has carbs? Oats and more ice cream. Sounds like a night! I probably won’t have time to pop in in the morning so hopefully the next post will be a run recap. Until then, don’t forget to enter my giveaway and enjoy the weekend!

Jars, New Products, And Raw Desserts

Posted on March 27, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

I hope you’re all liking the wellness giveaway! You have until March 31st to enter.

Tazo Rest

Tazo Rest

One Lucky Duck Raw Chocolate Chip Cookies

One Lucky Duck Raw Chocolate Chip Cookies

I was not terribly hungry for dessert last night while watching Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution. Did the chicken scene just make anyone else want to give up on meat? I couldn’t go that far, probably, but it makes me feel good that the meat I choose is wild, natural, or organic and minimally processed.

I must have been affected by a British accent because I snacked on “tea and cookies”, with Tazo Rest and One Lucky Duck‘s chocolate chip raw cookies. This was the last sample from One Lucky Duck I had and it did not disappoint. I liked how–very easily–there was a flavor distinction between the cookie and the chocolate, which isn’t easy to do at all with raw foods. It also didn’t have that raw, fall-apart-in-your-hand texture but wasn’t stale. They’re a bit pricey but a good treat for a raw foodist.

Almost Empty Nut Butter Jars

Almost Empty Nut Butter Jars

I couldn’t help but noticing not one but 2 of my nut butter jars were on their last leg. And since I had just had a chocolate chip cookie made mostly out of cashews, this couldn’t have been a more perfect pairing 🙂

Oats With Cookie Dough Peanut Butter And Raw Cashew Butter

Oats With Cookie Dough Peanut Butter And Raw Cashew Butter

On top was the very last of P.B.Loco’s cookie dough peanut butter and Love Raw Food’s cashew butter. There was definitely more nut butter than oats so this was delicious and rich. And I love just being able to toss the jar out when you’re done 🙂 Is it just me, or is it still impossible to get the jar satisfactory empty no matter how much you work at it?

Chia Moon Drop

Chia Moon Drop

I woke up at 5, and took an awful long time getting back to bed(hence not waking up again until 9, yikes!) :-/ Sometime then, I got snackish and went for Uli Mana‘s chocolate chia moon drop. It was a good choice. I think I got through half of it before even realizing where the chia were; that was a good thing since they still sort of freak me out. It was nice and chocolaty, too. I wish it were richer(maybe add some cacao butter?), but it was still pretty great.

Honest Foods Pomegranate Walnut Crisp Granola Plank

Honest Foods Pomegranate Walnut Crisp Granola Plank

I woke up at 8, put on my glasses, and then woke up again at 9. Oops. Don’t you hate when that happens? After deciding what was for breakfast, I grabbed a new Honest Foods granola plank to try out.

Pineapple Chobani With Pomegranate Walnut Granola, Pumpkin Oats With Walnut Butter In A Mighty Maple Jar

Pineapple Chobani With Pomegranate Walnut Granola, Pumpkin Oats With Walnut Butter In A Mighty Maple Jar

Another almost empty nut butter jar? I spoil myself 🙂 In the Mighty Maple jar went pumpkin oatmeal and a scoop of walnut butter; the pumpkin, peanut, walnut, and maple all work so well together! And I had a pineapple Chobani with about 1/3 of the Honest Foods granola plank. I like the ideas of the grab-n-go granola, but the pomegranate flavor in the pomegranate walnut crisp was just not there. It also wasn’t very crisp? It was much more chewy and soft. All the walnuts and peanuts made me happy, though, so clearly I wasn’t complaining much.

I’m sure you’ve noticed Cancun 2010 is no where in my Spring Break plans, haha. In case you were wondering, today I’m heading home to see my dog for the first time in 4 weeks. It’s felt like forever! Tomorrow, I have my 1/2 marathon to run along the New Hampshire coast–not looking forward to the weather. And then Monday is the day I become one really old teenager. We won’t celebrate until Easter with the relatives, though(OK, there’ll be a little celebrating ;-)).

No Crying Over Dropped Oatmeal

Posted on March 10, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

It’s a Wendesday! You know what that means… new Whole Food circulars! I get excited about Wednesday for all the wrong reasons 😀 But–if you’re a Providence reader–you simply need to get out grocery shopping today. It’s the last day kombucha and organic avocadoes are on sale at Eastside Market, and now at Whole Foods you can get organic broccoli, Kerrygold butter, and brownies all for more than cheap! I’m going to *try* to get to at least the former today.

Gingerade Kombucha

Speaking of kombucha, last night after supper I had a Gingerade kombucha. This is probably my favorite of the Synergy flavors. I just love anything ginger, and this is so robust! I sipped on this doing work and watching the Biggest Loser; last night’s episode just seemed “meh” to me. It also made me remember how much I hate when they lose weight but aren’t happy with how much. Every little step towards being healthy counts! Big changes don’t need to be made overnight, and–in real life, at least–there is no “game” to play. So often on that show they lose sight of what matters.

Soy Yogurt With Milk Chocolate Peanuts

For a dessert I mixed some agave into a So Delicious soy yogurt and crumbled a few too many Sunspire milk chocolate peanuts on top. I love that I can get these peanuts from the bulk bin; it’s all that saves me from going poor having to buy the individual packages. The yogurt not surprisingly wasn’t too sweet because I used  agave instead of vanilla stevia :-/ I think there’s a time and place for both–this would have been a stevia moment.

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Chocolate Peanut Butter And Chunky PB

Afterwards, I was definitely feeling a little nutty. I whipped up some pumpkin oatmeal and added a spoonful of Justin’s Chocolate Peanut Butter and 365 brand crunchy(which you can get for $1 with the new Whole Deal flyer. If I went overboard on the peanut butter, it’s because this combo was fantastic. It reminded me of eating a crunchy peanut butter cup(do they even make those?). So good.

I happily woke up this morning after 8 hours  of sleep right with my alarm at 6:50 and the sun shining in and did not feel like running at the gym; it just seemed like too much work, and I have enough of that. Instead, I spent the first few hours in bed with a good book(read: homework book), some coffee, my laptop and breakfast. This was definitely the way I needed to start today. This, however, was not.

Shatered Bowl And Oatmeal

Shattered Bowl And Oatmeal

Why did I title the post how I did Because I totally want to cry. I had just put the toppings on my oatmeal, and randomly decided to carry it back to the microwave for reheating. It was so hot I lost my handle and, well, the rest was history. At least the bowl was only from the ever exclusive Targe and I can probably get another one easily. Call me crazy(please don’t), but I even made an effort to save what peanut butter I could; I hardly had any left of the cookie dough peanut butter and I’m not sure if P.B. Loco exists as a company.  After that fiasco, I remade the oatmeal in something I couldn’t possibly break.

Oatmeal With Cookie Dough Peanut Butter And Strawberry Jam, Chobani With 1/2 Gluten Free Cupcake

There’s definitely something to the thought that we eat with our eyes; even though this was the exact same amount of oats and everything, it looked 10 times less appetizing(the first bowl was a real beauty). Shame, too, because the flavors of vanilla and strawberry were really uplifting and reminded me of Summer.

Chobani With 1/2 Gluten Free Vanilla Cupcake

At least this yogurt couldn’t possibly have been a failure. I am really loving these gluten-free cupcakes more and more and definitely want it as my full birthday cake; Bob’s Red Mill makes a fine product!

I had planned to go for an 8-9 mile outdoor run in about an hour. Now I just don’t know what the morning holds. The night, on the other hand, looks a little better; I have another one of those 6(now 7) extracurricular things but this one should be a goody 😉 And definitely a boost I need to make it through this week. Lastly, check out this double giveaway from Iowa Girl!

Remember when there was all that buzz about becoming a “good mood blogger”? This would not be my entry post. This morning, I started out with a very clear thought “This day is going to suck, but I’m going to get through it”. That couldn’t have stayed true throughout it all.

Manning Chappel

I can’t say church sucked; I’m pretty sure a big lightening bolt would hit me if I tried. I can say figuring out how this was all going to work sucked. Back in Boston, it was easier; there’s a church where you can get “drive-by ashes” which we would do every Ash Wednesday after work/school and be off. First off, I needed to find the church, then what times they had mass, then which ones I could make, etc. I ended up going to one right on the main campus at noon. It was surprisingly packed and there were some people I recognized from last semester’s classes there, and even my gym friend! Didn’t get to say hi, though.

Black Bean And Acorn Squash Salad

I really couldn’t have been more off my game: I “meal planned” to eat a juicy burger on Ash Wednesday. Whoops! Well that was out, so I thought about a veggie burger. All of my veggie burgers are SOY based, meaning they fall under what I gave up for lent. Are you kidding me?! A simple lunch became a scrapping for leftovers, trip to the dining hall, and a bit of ingenuity. Spinach and black beans came from the dining hall while I diced 1/2 an acorn squash from Sunday, and topped it all with this:

Foods Alive Hemp Oil Dressing

I can’t say this sucked, but I can say my review of it will. That’s because I’m not giving one right now. And that’s because I really didn’t get a good taste of it/didn’t use enough 😦 From what I could taste, it seemed really good! It was sort of like BBQ sauce in that it was sweet but vinegary. But I had to eat my meal in discussion and didn’t get the opportunity to use more than I first poured. Bear with me on my day; it gets lamer.

Unsweetened Decaf Coffee

Unsweetened coffee? Yeah, that sucks. Between classes I had time(OK, I made time). to pick up a coffee. The only problem was that I didn’t have any stevia packets on me, and didn’t realize this until I was sitting in my next class. Whoops! Again!

Pomegranate Chobani And Brazil Nut Almond Bora Bora Bar

Midway through class I broke in to my planned snack(it’s 2 1/2 hours long). This picture sucks compared to how it was; I actually crumbled half the bar over the yogurt like granola. I just didn’t want to take out my camera in class(although the girl next to me had no problem texting the whole time. It’s not even a lecture!). We also had a lecturer from a Conneticutt museum. It’s not fair for him to say he sucked; when are guest lecturers ever good? When he asked if anyone had heard of the tribe he studies, I didn’t raise my hand even though I have; I didn’t quite know how to say “Yes, but not because of their museum. Because of Foxwoods casino which my family frequents.” That might have given the wrong impression(or the exact correct one).

Apple

I don’t have to say it; when has an apple taken from the dining hall ever been good? This one tasted especially spiteful, if only because I had just came back from a trek to recover my water bottle I left behind in discussion and still had no clue what was for dinner. This Lent thing really threw me for a loop! I decided that I would roast broccoli, whatever I was eating.

Eaten Ice Cream

When I was downstairs, throwing broccoli in the oven, I came across this empty container of Snickerdoodle ice cream. Yeah, I pretty much knew there was no chance this was anyone else’s but mine. Apparently, someone thought it would be alright to eat the last of it with a fork. Ughh. I had problems with this last semester, but they seemed to stop. Now I fear for my other 2 pints of ice cream down there(my stash of frozen bananas for banana whip not so much).

Oatmeal With A Cage Free EB Egg And Cookie Dough Peanut Butter, Roasted Broccoli

My dinner may just be the oddest thing, but it did not suck. That’s because I threw out the mentality of what it “should” be and just went with what I wanted. I needed to remind myself that no one passed a law that broccoli and oatmeal with peanut butter can’t be eaten together; the only restrictions for today are no meat and no preflavored soy, and this fits that bill. Amen to odd dinners.

My google reader and inbox are full, and yeah, that sucks, but it’s because I forwent looking at them and finished the real “work” I had to do. And now I’m going to go to the dining hall looking for plain yogurt, which they won’t have; it’s going to suck, but I’ll soften the blow by getting a decaf coffee. And then I’ll get back, slip into my PJ’s, and obsess over how Survivor’s not on tonight, and that will suck, but I’ll have the Olympics to watch. For my bemusement and your mental health, what has sucked in your life, and what was the “but”?

Life won’t suck for the winners of this Q.Bel chocolate giveaway on Mom’s Focus or this coconut peanut butter giveaway.

Sweet Oats

*Don’t forget to enter the Coconut Oil giveaway I’m hosting here*

I’m a distance runner, and Tuesday-Thursday has felt like a sprint! I can do it though; we’re all most there! I think I can, I think I can, I think I can. Or, if you’re more for Dory, Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming. Onto the eats:

Q.Bel Vegan Dark Chocolate Wafer Bars

You would think all of Q.bel’s dark chocolate would be vegan, right? Well not so. They put milkfat in the regular dark chocolate, but not in this one. It was pretty good–actually tasted strikingly similar to the other dark chocolate bars. It must have been good because before I knew it these were gone while I was watching Modern Family and The Middle. I knew the former was hilarious but never watched the latter; it was really good! I’m glad Patricia Heaton is back on TV, too.

Oatmeal With Cookie Dough Peanut Butter

I was so beat last night, and was the first to admit it. I did something appalling: I shut off my computer before 9:30 to start going to bed. And oh God did that feel good. After being freed from technology(and work), I turned on Idol and had a big comforting bowl of oatmeal with cookie dough peanut butter–such an amazing combo! And I’m almost done with the jar, and you know what that means 😉

I think I was asleep by 10:20, which is remarkable considering Wayland Wednesday was happening downstairs(think: music and booze). And I only woke up a few time! Some crazy dreams led to crazy cravings, though. I’m completely convinced I need to get some organic strawberry poptarts next time I’m at Whole Foods to settle those(speaking of organic junk food).

Nature's Path Peanut Choco' Granola Bar

I woke up right at 6:15 with my alarm and had to get going to the gym unfortunately fast. Already I could tell my stomach was feeling like a pit and I had to grab this bar on-the-go. It was good, but more chocolatey than peanutty; it reminded me a lot of a Kudos bar.

Running Stats

I don’t have a ton of time at the gym in the morning on Tuesdays and Thursdays; my goal is to be done by 7:30, though I can probably push that 20 minutes or so when I get better into a routine. Instead of distance, I worked on consistant speed and picked it up a bit from the past few days. I felt really good after these 5 miles! I definitely could have done 2 more at that pace, but time was not on my side(I didn’t even get to when Pokemon is on :-().

Peanut Soy Yogurt, Sweet Potato Oats With Justin's Chocolate Peanut Butter

Sweet Potato Oats With Justin's Chocolate Peanut Butter

My breakfast in 3 words: On-the-go, orange, and yummy. I mixed some partially defatted peanut flour in the soy yogurt to make it more proteinous(and obviously delicious); I think the key is salt and vanilla stevia–my two staples! For the oats, I tried something completely new to me; I had leftover sweet potatoes and mashed 3oz in my oatmeal with stevia and salt. This came out sooo good! Now I see what the fuss is about. I think it would have been even better with maple peanut butter but I still had a chocolate peanut butter craving from the bar.

Apple

At least my first class doesn’t feel like an overwhelming subject or have a very intense professor; I couldn’t handle that at 9am. But when I got back to my dorm I was hangry! So far it’s feeling like a bottomless pit day 😦 Maybe a delayed reaction from yesterday’s workout. It’s important to keep in mind always that if you’re eating good foods and your body’s still hungry then it’s what it needs to refuel, so by all means dig in!

I have plans to make review pages for a) The new Q.bel chocolate, b) The Nature’s Path granola bar and c) Justin’s chocolate almond butter, but since none of those were sent for reviewing I might meander and take my time getting around to those. In the meanwhile, here’s a Q.bel giveaway, a Tropical Traditions giveaway here, and a chocolate giveaway.

Say Hello To My Little Friend

Posted on January 14, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Freebie alert: go to Barneybutter.com to sample their delicious almond butter for free(but watch out because you’ll get hooked). Just click on the ad in the top left and say you heard about it through FoodMakesFunFuel.com

*In an awful Italian accent* Say hello to my little friend:

Trader Joe's Plain Goat Milk Yogurt

Really, Trader Joe would be my bestie, but I don’t have any pictures of him, so this yogurt will substitute as my little friend. Think it’s intimidating? It’s not really. In fact, it’s very similar to cow’s milk.

Goat's Milk Nutrition

See? The nutrition is pretty much the same as a low fat plain cow’s milk yogurt. The only difference is that the flavor is much tangier and, as Avery has taught us, closer to human’s milk explaining the greater toleration for it. If you’re lactose intolerant, you must try goat milk; what’s there to lose? Well, OK, you might still not be able to tolerate it and gas up the place. But you also might be able to and find a new food. But before I got to open this up, the UPS man came.

Naturally Nutty Nut Butters

He never comes after dinner, or knocks on our door(and really intimidatingly); Montana tried barking and sounding tough but it kind of sounded like we were drowning a cat. Anyway, our order from Naturally Nutty came in! I placed this order shortly after Christmas with some gift money and my dad and I both ordered so we could save on shipping. I got something old(the butter toffee), something new(the chocolate cherry), and Katie from the company threw in an unreleased one for me to sample and review! It’s vanilla cinnamon almond butter and it’s all organic! Thanks, Katie, I can’t wait to give it a try(especially since the vanilla almond butter itself is unreal)! OK–back to my little friend:

Goat Milk Yogurt With Gluten Free Peanut Butter And Chocolate Brownie

I swear there was goat milk under that. I still have some gluten free chocolate brownies from New Years in the fridge. Oops. At least they’re still delicious 😀 That one might have been cut a little big, because it kept giving and giving, but it was so good! Also good was Modern Family last night; I had to break from Idol to watch it and it was soooo worth it. Afterwards, I was really boring:

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Nutritional Yeast And Smart Balance Peanut Butter

2 nights in a row and no shame–it’s good. And it’s giving me such ideas for an original recipe; should I get in the kitchen this afternoon? Maybe… I have to say, this bowl was a lot more than I thought it’d be and made me feel a bit sick after eating it all. Or maybe that was just because I had the thought “Hey, the nutritional yeast kind of looks like dandruff” half way through. It’s disgusting, but doesn’t it? I should stop talking before I convince you out of eating it.

This morning I did the same workout as yesterday, which was great! When i did this my first week on vacation just once, it put me out of exercise for a few days; clearly it’s been building strength and endurance. Yesterday I didn’t need anything as a workout snack but today I felt famished half-way through.

Cookie Dough Luna Protein

I’m reusing this photo from a few days ago, only because it looks so good! And it was 🙂 I should just buy a case of these protein bars and maybe save 60 cents that way. Today’s workout got me sweating! But sweat is good; embrace the sweat 🙂 It means you’re doing it right. Obviously, a quick shower was in order before breakfast.

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Honey-Maple Peanut Butter

Goat Milk Yogurt With Raspberry Preserves

My little friend returned! But first I had some pumpkin oatmeal with protein honey maple peanut butter for some delicious and healthy fats. And then along that I had raspberry jam over goat milk; these two flavors were entirely meant for each other, like peanut butter and jelly. I do sweeten the goat milk yogurt a tad with vanilla stevia but not so much so as to lose the tanginess.

I tivoed a good couple of hours worth of shows last night, so I guess I know what I’ll be doing next. But first 2 awesome bloggers are having giveaway. Happy 1 year anniversary to Brandi! And win some Chia seeds(how exotic) from Avery.
