Uncooking On Memorial Day

Posted on May 31, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update, Recipe | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

I find it ironic that on the epitome of BBQing and Grilling is when I decide to have another one of my raw-kicks.

I started my morning with a run, which called for prefueling with chocolate. Lindt is obviously not a raw chocolate brand but still tasty, and even non-raw dark chocolate has a good amount of antioxidants. Chomp on 🙂

I only aimed for 9 miles but ended up doing 11 after I got way too in to my new playlist. I think I’ve listened to some songs by Adam Lambert and Sugarland 5+ times over the past few days. Whoops?

All I’ve been craving lately for lunch has been raw salads. We seriously don’t have enough raw veggies in this house to satisfy that! I used half an avocado squirted with lime juice as the “meat” here, and around it added raw corn, lemon garlic marinated olives, and onions caramelized in a little EVOO(obviously not raw but cooked onions taste 1000 times better than raw in my opinion). The result: delicious. This was like some backwards guacamole salad. Loved it!

Zevia Twist

It seems my sweet-tooth, which has been in and out recently is back. A Zevia twist tasted perfect mid-afternoon for a boost. Just like a diet Sierra Mist!

The piece d’ resistance of the afternoon was this Memorial Day sundae. I really want to make a maple walnut flavor ice cream! Along with soooo many others. But since there’s only so much room in our freezer, I took some of the ice cream I made with raw milk and covered it in NH maple taffy and freshly toasted walnuts. Yum! Except whole milk ice cream is just too icy as I’ve found out; you really need half and half to make something decently creamy(or coconut milk at a 2:1 ratio with water for a vegan half and half).

It turned out that I went from being the only one with plans for Memorial Day to being the only one home. How does that happen?! Not going to lie: I was a little upset. But instead I decided to make this a golden opportunity to try a new recipe I’ve been dying to make.

First I snacked on some Crazy Richards chunky pb straight for some energy and got the food processor out.

The recipe I wanted to (not) cook was raw taco meat, so I went straight over to Averie’s blog and found her super simple recipe. Here it is below; I followed it to a T except used her variation of swapping out the spices for predone(Trader Joe’s) taco seasoning.

Averie’s Raw Vegan Taco Nut “Meat”
1/2 C Raw Almonds
1/2 C Walnuts
1/3 C Sun Dried Tomatoes loosely packed (If using oil packed, may slightly reduce amount of olive oil added)
1/2 Tsp Chili Powder (or to taste)
1/4 Tsp Cayenne Powder (or to taste)
2 to 4 Tbsp Olive Oil (or hemp, flax, etc.)
Optional: 1 Tsp Salt (or to taste)

Wow! I’ve never had something so flavorful. And I will be making this again. It certainly wouldn’t suit if all you want is that beef-flavor or meat. But if you’re just looking for something fun and tasty, this totally works. I ate it along a gingerade kombucha and home fries made with white potato, sweet potato, red onion, olive oil, salt and pepper. Of course, really Averie would probably hate this dish because it has about a days worth of sodium in it(and I’m eating it with a salt shaker ready and standing by).

And now I’m watching Knocked Up on TV. I love the movie, but some things are just better done when you have the house to yourself 😉

Where do you go for new recipes? This is something I always get asked by people I cook for. Almost all my recipes come or were derived from blogs, FoodNetwork.com, or Allrecipes.com. Maybe this is a bias crowd to ask this question, but really I have to think this is what the internet is for!

Marriages Made In Heaven

Posted on May 30, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

News all over Twitter is that there was a marriage made in heaven today for one blogger. Allow me to steal that and totally abuse it for thematic purposes.

I think it’s well documented that me and chocolate have a deep, deep love affair. Would you bet it’s so great that I was willing to run 5 miles down the road for a gluten-free brownie at 11am? The only problem was that the store opened at noon. Whoops! At least I got a good run out of the deal?

Raw Salad Corn Tomatoes Olive

It’s great that raw veggies and Summer salads marry so easily because then I get the best of both worlds. I haven’t liked corn for the longest time, until I tried it raw today thanks to Lauren(who just rocked a Boston half-marathon!). Anyway, raw corn = amazing. It was like adding sugar to the salad and went so well with olives and olive cashew nut cheese. Yum!

Purely Decadent Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl Coconut Milk Ice Cream

Chocolate + Peanut butter. Yes. As much as I want to marry chocolate, I’ll allow it to have its mistress. This has to be one of my favorite ice creams. It’s so perfect, I don’t feel the need at all to try to make it myself. I will just bask in its c+pb perfection.

Homemade BBQ Sauce

If I’m like a married person in anyway, it’s that I’m always over a hot stove. Today, I decided to make my own BBQ sauce! The recipe isn’t perfect or flavorful enough yet, so I’ll keep it in my pocket. But it’s so much fun to make your own condiments, I have to say, you should go out(or in) and try it!

Chobani With Peanut Butter And Local Raw Honey

Is polygamy legal? Because peanut butter totally has a thing going with local raw honey. As it should; Nothing beats the sweet + salty combo in my books. I ate that over a plain Chobani because really lacking on the protein as of late and that definitely helped to be a filler.

There was also an apple consumed before dinner. That is not invited to the wedding. At all. The last few apples I’ve had have just been way too sub-par. I think we need a “break” like Ross and Rachel.

Homemade BBQ Tofu, Sweet Potato Fries

Everything came together perfect for dinner. It was a symphony of tofu marinated in BBQ sauce and grilled along with some salty sweet potato fries. The onions that were in the sauce got strained out but rather than throw them away, I used them as a topping. Brilliant! They were oh-so flavorful. Have I mentioned how much I love onions as of late? I think that’s another (stinky-breath) marriage right there.

Sweet or salty? Even with my abundant love for chocolate and ice cream, I simply couldn’t live without salty food(hello, Indian cuisine!). That’s probably why I’d sooner opt for a bottle of soy sauce than BBQ sauce. I know they make reduced sodium; do they make enhanced sodium?

I Put My New Shoes On And Suddenly Everything’s Right

Posted on May 2, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Hello, Hello! In case you missed it, here’s my race recap from this morning. My unofficial time is 1:37:29 but I’m still waiting for their website to update. In the meanwhile, here are some photos my mom took at the finish line.

Crossing The Finish Line

Crossing The Finish Line

Rehydrating

Hardware

Hardware

Like I mentioned, I showered up and headed home just for the day afterwards. Boy, was that exhausting! I really couldn’t help but make use of the grill while I was there.

Grilled Grass-Fed Burger, Brussels, And Corn

Grilled Grass-Fed Burger, Brussels, And Corn

Mmmm, tasty! The corn I didn’t really care for; sure, it’s a whole grain, but even with some grass-fed butter it’s pretty bland :-/ But I do love a good burger with salt and ketchup. I spent a good amount of time on the couch with Tivo, but managed a few moments in the kitchen, enough to whip up this for a snack:

Mystery Snack

Mystery Snack

Any guesses? It’s chocolatey, caloric, delicious, and contains no animal byproducts! I think I pretty much gave it away at that 😉 Expect a recipe to come(and to see much more because I took near the whole pan back with me).

Avocado Kale Salad With Salted Cashews, Parmesan Cauliflower

Avocado Kale Salad With Salted Cashews, Parmesan Cauliflower

On the way back we stopped at Whole Foods where I was damn-near famished. I guess that was the post-run hunger hitting me. I took advantage of the salad bar and got Parmesan cauliflower and avocado rubbed kale salad with salted cashews. Yum! These are my two favorite things that Whole Foods makes that, try as I might, they just do it better.

New Shoes

New Shoes

The highlight of the day was getting new shoes!! 10 months and 1 day later, it was about time. The funny thing is is that these are the exact model as my old ones. I knew I liked the brand, and when I saw that these were $30 off, how could I pass them up?

Organic Pink Lady Apple

Organic Pink Lady Apple

Getting back to my dorm, I snacked on an apple unpacking. The shuffling around is always the worst part; but at least I don’t have to do laundry tomorrow 😀 Happy Monday to me. I could not wait for everything to be away and to have dinner.

Chickpea Salad With Raw Parsley Cheddar, Mulberries, And Hemp Oiled Greens

Chickpea Salad With Raw Parsley Cheddar, Mulberries, And Hemp Oiled Greens

I just needed something easy and raw, so I had a salad with chickpeas, Navitas Naturals Mulberries, Next Generation Dairy organic raw & probiotic parsley cheddar, and salad with Foods Alive hemp oil sweet & sassy dressing. The hardest part of this was knowing that I was going to eat it and taking the cheese out to breath an hour beforehand.

Do you get any magazine subscriptions? What are they and any horror stories? I get Food Network and Rachael Ray. I bought them both after Christmas with gift money because it’s much cheaper to get them by mail than at CVS, which I would have done anyway. I love my food magazines, but they’ve both tried to repeatedly bill me, and I just got a bill in the mail for Rachael Ray to charge me again. I’m sure I’m not the only one with troublesome subscription issues given the nature of the industry.

Productivity

Posted on November 8, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

I guess my productivity is like condensation in New England: when it rains, it pours. Before i had showered, eaten, blogged, or even stretched yesterday morning, I had my laundry going. At 12, it was done and my bed looked like this:

November 7tj 019

Unfolded Laundry

Amazingly, I resisted the urge to put on freshly washed pajamas. Don’t lie; we all want to do that when it’s fresh out of the drier. Instead, I folded and put everything away, and worked on the first of my 3 history midterm essays while I waited for my dad to come at 2. I would have thought I’d get hungry by then but I think I was so immersed in writing I didn’t notice anything. I did grab this for a little pep:

November 7tj 020

Zevia Cola

Did you know all of Zevia’s sodas are caffeine free except this one? That’s because it’s naturally flavored and the kola nut naturally has caffeine. That really is making me wonder what’s in caffeine-free coke, though I suppose that’s so unnatural to begin with it doesn’t matter. When my dad did show up, we had a good laugh.

November 7tj 021

Frying Pan

He brought a package that came for me in the mail over the week. Neither of us knew exactly what it would be or who it was from. It turned out to be a frying pan I won last month; doesn’t everybody need a lightweight frying pan for their dorm? We put it back in the box to bring home. Because it was 2pm, I started wanting lunch, so we stopped at Whole Foods to hit up the salad bar.

November 7tj 025

Grilled Peppers, Lemon Rice, Gobhi Matar, Aloo Baingan, Chicken In Chettinad Sauce

Weighing food is the worst idea ever; don’t let me know if I’m about to eat well over a pound of sauce-laden goodness. This is actually one of the first times I ever had Indian; it’s not a common cuisine around my town and it smelled so good I thought I’d try it. I liked it but I bet there are better dishes out there to try. My favorite was probably the chicken, which was a very fatty cut of meat but very delicious as well. I consider eating ethnically to be productive because it’s expanding my horizon. I didn’t actually finish it all. I intuitively ate the first half, then ate another 1/4 because it was damn good 🙂

On the way home we also stopped by Market Basket; no matter when you go that store has the longest lines, and everybody’s cart looks like they’re coming from BJ’s. They didn’t have vitatops this time or the bread I was looking for, but we did get something for dinner, pumpkin for baking, gardenburgers, and Oikos and soy yogurt from Whole Foods. In the car ride I wasn’t able to write but I did come up with a decent thesis for my Epic Poetry paper.

When we got home I plugged in my computer and got to work(there might have been some Montana scrubbing in there somewhere). I finished my first essay and started on the next. Along the way, I needed a study snack.

November 7tj 029

Vitabrownie And Plain Soy Yogurt

The hug was entirely K inspired. Note: soy yogurt doesn’t hug quite as well as regular yogurt, but it kind of looks like a pillowy cloud if you ask me. This vitabrownie definitely needed a hug because it got a little squished in the freezer. Time in the microwave was totally the medicine for that. I was a bit more productive(get the theme of this post?) until it was time for dinner.

November 7tj 030

Mahi Mahi With Soyaki, Corn On The Cob, Beets

Wow is all I can say. It seems so simple and like the dishes I had all Summer but for some reason this was so much more welcomed yesterday. I think I haven’t had corn on the cob in months; talk about your whole grain. And the beets were fun if only because I haven’t had any in months again. They left behind a lot of red juice and I joked with my mom(sort of serious, though) that she should collect it to make red velvet cake. Did you know Whole Foods sells natural food coloring for the holiday season? Expect to see some come Christmas time. Also, the mahi mahi was much better than Friday’s chewier fish, and the soyaki sauce put it over the top.

Well what helps productivity more than a full belly? After dinner I finished my second essay(booyah) and printed some recipes I was planning to make, as well as catch up on DVRed shows. Like I said, when it rains it pours. Ice cream was a well deserved treat.

November 7tj 003

Purely Decadent Snickerdoodle Soy Ice Cream

Unfortunately, I finished off this flavor. This was definitely my favorite find from the Summer. And it seemes like they carry it at more and more stores these days! How exciting. I also had some coffee and worked on this blog post(see how productive I am doing things ahead of time :-)) Unwrapped was having a marathon on The Food Network = heaven. Heaven like these oats:

November 7tj 008

Pumpkin Oats With Butter Toffee Peanut Butter, Maple Syrup, And Pumpkin Molasses Cookie

Chocolate, maple, ginger, peanut, pumpkin, etcetera, etcetera. These were delicious fuel for… well lounging around and translating Latin. That takes energy, and plenty, trust me. My dad bought an 8oz container of chocolate butter toffee when he placed his Naturally Nutty order(ps. If my dad has placed an order all his own, what’s slowing down you cool cats?). It’s ok, but I think I like butter toffee peanut butter and chocolate chips better for the contrast.

November 7tj 011

Whole Wheat Cinnamon Raisin English Muffin With Cream Cheese

One last snack and I was done. I wanted to try my dad’s maple butter he’s always loved that comes from our grandparents. There’s no butter in maple butter, it’s basically just crystallized maple syrup you keep in the fridge and spread like maple syrup. It was awesome! Though I could easily see myself going a little overboard with a tub of this in my dorm, haha.

Well remember how yesterday morning I had hoped to write 2 essays, pick a thesis, and translate 3 odes, and I thought that was a crazy amount? Well, I did everything but about 30 lines of poetry! I had no idea I’d actually get that much done. But I’m glad I did. What should I set myself for today? 1/2 my Epic essay sounds like a good goal. Let’s keep the productivity rolling. But first, this welcomed sight:

A Trip Well Worth It

Posted on October 4, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update, Recipe | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

So I entirely thought I posted this at 9am. Guess not. Here was my life up until that point, if ya’ll still interested(and yes, there was froyo ;-))

If there’s one thing I hate it’s being behind and/or rushed in the morning. So you can imagine how I was feeling about running 90 minutes later than normal, for a longer time than normal, and expecting to be picked up before lunch–Go, go, go! That’s another good thing about muffins for breakfast: they move with you better than oatmeal. Despite the pandemonium, I had breakfast in me and was out of the dorm by noon. On the way home we stopped at Whole Foods to get something for dinner as well as lunch. My dad didn’t think I’d be hungry after having just shoveled a muffin and yogurt down. Really? Me? Of course I was up for attacking the food bar. If anything I dislike how many choices there are because I could be there for ages reading every sign, but in the end I stuck with something simple:

Brown Rice Tuna Sushi, Buffalo Tofu, Broccoli

Brown Rice Tuna Sushi, Buffalo Tofu, Broccoli

Someone please remind me the last time I had sushi? I’m sure it’s on the blog, but it’d definitely be more than a month back. Let’s not let that happen again, k? I forgot how good slightly sweetened rice and soy sauce(aka liquid salt :-)) could be with a little fish. The fish was actually one of the weirder parts; the first 4 pieces were nice and soft but the last few were a bit tough and chewy. I mean, it is supermarket sushi after all, so I don’t know how great I was expecting. I also love eating the ginger straight. Anybody else do that? The tofu was decent but I wasn’t feeling anything fried at the time so I passed those off to my dad.

When I got home I was literally dropped off and left to my lonesome; my dog had a haircut appointment so I had mi casa to myself. First I discovered this in the cupboard:

Caramel Sauce

Caramel Sauce

Remember how disappointed I was when I couldn’t find the caramel sauce I put back at the Dedham Whole Foods? Someone in my family who reads the blog took the hint and was so nice enough as to pick this up when he saw it 🙂 How sweet. I love me some good caramel/apple/peanut butter action and this has just 4 simple ingredients so it’s basically a necessity for the Fall. I also found this in the fridge:

Chobani Yogurt

Chobani Yogurt

Last month I won a contest at Heather Bakes for one of every flavor of Chobani and it finally arrived this Friday. When I opened it, it wasn’t quite 1 of every flavor; there were about 9 or so with some missing and some duplicates. But that’s ok because there were 2 pineapple flavors which are my favorite. I can’t wait to bring these back to the dorm. 9 yogurts will last me… through Wednesday, haha. After finding all this I got down to business.

Priority number 1: Ice cream

Elan's Chocolate Frozen Yogurt

Elan's Chocolate Frozen Yogurt

You must have seen this coming, right? I mean, a whole freezer loaded with ice cream without the potential of it being stolen. And, c’mon, it’s me 🙂 I love the chocolate because it tastes almost fudgey. It has so much cocoa powder in it it has 2 grams of fiber per serving. Ridiculous much? Ok, well that was off the to-do list

Priority number 2: Bake

Again, how could I not? And I knew just the perfect recipe. Holly, Miss Everythingtarian, came up with the most amazing sounding Vegan Pumpkin Molasses Cookies, recipe here. Done drooling? K, good. I altered the recipe slightly by dropping the canola oil to 1/4 cup and sugar to 1/2 cup. Apparently, Holly doesn’t just make recipes that taste great, but she makes recipes that come out looking amazing too. Check out these beauties:

Vegan Pumpkin Molasses Cookies

Vegan Pumpkin Molasses Cookies

Amazing. I might have gone a little overboard on the rolling of dough in sugar so that it all evened out in the end. Oh, and with the spices, too. Has anybody actually measured those out, ever? Didn’t think so. The moment these came out, the house filled up with people again. Here was my dog, sans hair:

Montana

Montana

He’s a bit of a hell raiser so they don’t try to do something fancy to him, just shave him down. I think it makes him look like a rodent–a cute rodent only an owner can love. He was not getting a cookie, but I was:

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Vegan Pumpkin Molasses Cookie

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Vegan Pumpkin Molasses Cookie

I only used 30g oats and 1/3 cup pumpkin because I figured the rest would be in the cookie. This recipe absolutely knocked my socks off. It’s healthy yet absolutely sweet and delicious, and nice and soft and chewy like I like my cookies. Have I gushed about these enough? Didn’t think so. I’ll continue to do so through the week. My hats off to Holly, who in all this craziness I forgot to mention is running a marathon this weekend. She does it all, folks. I caught up with a lot of house flipping and cake acing with my Tivo, and even managed a little(just a little) homework in all of that. Soon enough it was dinner time:

Salmon With Soyaki, Corn With Hickory Smoked Goat Cheese, Broccoli

Salmon With Soyaki, Corn With Hickory Smoked Goat Cheese, Broccoli

Believe it or not, I did fundamentally want salmon tonight for some reason. I feel like having the same thing every time I come home is a bit boring. HOWEVER, it was still on sale, and no one in this family can deny a bargain, so salmon it was. And I certainly can’t say I was complaining, especially with a little Trader Joe Island Soyaki sauce on the plate. We were actually supposed to have Trader Joe basmatti rice to go along with this but after it cooked it was not appetizing to me. Strange because I’ve had their boxed basmatti rice before and really liked it. Thankfully, the corn in the microwave method was a quick sub-in.

Last night’s primetime TV was a little down if you ask me. Food Network had a marathon of The Next Iron Chef, which I’d never seen before but wasn’t terribly exciting since I could predict Michael Symon being the winner. Instead I had a little excitement with food.

Vanilla Elan Frozen Yogurt

Vanilla Elan Frozen Yogurt

Vanilla 🙂 Doesn’t get more exciting than that? I just love this vanilla because it actually tastes like there’s something to it. And when it melts and you like it it’s reminiscent of a vanilla milkshake from a Johnny Rockets or somewhere–so good.

Greek Yogurt With Muffin Bottom And Vanilla Stevia

Greek Yogurt With Muffin Bottom And Vanilla Stevia

I really enjoyed that yogurt from this morning and felt like I ate it way too fast so I wanted to enjoy it again. I didn’t even do anything with the muffin top this time; I just chopped off the butt, stuck it in the microwave, and crumbled it into my yogurt. Again, delicious. It tastes just like carrot cake yogurt. Got any muffin butts you don’t want? I’ll take them off your hands. I tried watching TV shows online but I think Google Chrome has made my internet run a little slower lately. Anyone else experiencing this? Ah well, I had an english muffin with some spread overload to top it off while the computer wasn’t working.

Cinnamon Raisin English Muffin With Cookie Dough Peanut Butter And Gingerbread Cream Cheese

Cinnamon Raisin English Muffin With Cookie Dough Peanut Butter And Gingerbread Cream Cheese

I was planning on making a nice cookie spread but nothing appealed to me except the cookie dough peanut butter so I just added a bit extra of that and called it a night. I know it wasn’t even a full 2 tablespoons, but it felt like a ton since the surface area of the english muffin was so small; I swear I had full mouthfuls of peanut butter–not complaining. The cream cheese was Archer Farm’s Brand so I think it must have been all natural? All I know is it had a ton of confusing ingredients and didn’t agree with my stomach 100% but was pretty damn delicious.

This morning I fully planned for it to be raining and for me to be forced for into a rest day; I was a little confused when my planning for rain didn’t happen. What I don’t have that power? I thought it over and decided to take the rest day anyway even though I could have got some good running on my home streets. Instead I did what Sunday morning’s best for: circulars and breakfast.

Pumpkin Oats In A Butter Toffee Jar

Pumpkin Oats In A Butter Toffee Jar

My first experience with oats in a jar a few months ago didn’t go so well, but this time it was perfect. The jar was just the right size to be overflowing with oats, and I think there was just the right amount of peanut butter left. I had left this behind when I went off to college in September for my dad to try and he actually liked it so much he ordered his own, bigger jar. That’s only proof that anyone who tastes this just falls in love with it. I also had one of the pineapple Chobani I won to round it off.

Now I’m sitting here, catching up on last nights SNL. Was it just me or did the Philips Family Feud sketch fall a little flat and was in bad taste? Ryan Reynolds is a pretty funny guy, but I don’t know that he’s a sketch comedy person.  I’m sure I should work on my first essay of the year *shudder* but the sun’s peaking out so a walk might be in order.

Whoopie In The Dorm Room

Posted on October 3, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Get your mind out of the gutter 😉 Did the Newlywed Game ruin that word for anyone else? Who would’ve thought the Game Show Network could scar a child.

In Latin Class yesterday morning we got to talking with each other and one of my classmates moved to a new dorm because her roommate was from hell and literally threw a shoe at her. Could you imagine having to live with someone who would do that to a stranger? Sure, a good friend or family member deserves a slipper in the face from time to time, but not someone you don’t know. Now I’m thankful I have a normal roommate(he might just wish he were able to say the same, haha).

My appetite funk really wasn’t fixed before lunch but I went ahead and tried making due anyway:

Maple Mustard Tofu, Steamed Broccoli, Sweet Potato, Corn On The Cob

Maple Mustard Tofu, Steamed Broccoli, Sweet Potato, Corn On The Cob

Clearly the maple mustard tofu has become a fave of the week with me; if you’re wondering how it tastes, the maple and mustard don’t really overpower the tofu flavor, but moreso blend with it to make some median of the 3. I recommend trying it(obviously). The sweet potato I had in my fridge from a few dinners back, and the corn was from last weeks farmers’ market. I actually finished it all(or most of it at least) before my 1 o’clock class. I didn’t think it would hold me over long but my appetite really never got going in the first place so I didn’t notice anything.

No Emma run in to report between classes. But you can’t say I didn’t try. I even went to the little cafe where I saw her last, mostly to get a cup of coffee because it’s been so cold in New England. Oh well, I heard a few weeks back she went to England for the weekend. Could you imagine what that would be like with the flight and time shift? Craziness.

When I got out of my Epic Poetry class I had something in my mailbox:

Stonyfield Mail

Stonyfield Mail

Kristina from Stonyfield sent me coupons after my moldy Oikos experience. Thanks, Kristina! It’s great that a company cares so much about their consumers. I always love it when big companies send a hand written note, too. I always stash them away with my old birthday and graduation cards because they feel special. After that I did something else that’s become a theme of the week:

Chocolate Brownie Z-Bar

Chocolate Brownie Z-Bar

Z-Bar? Check. Grocery Bag? Check. The walk over to Whole Foods was nice and relaxing once classes were done for the week and I could not think about homework for a bit. It’s supposed to rain the majority of the weekend so in case I’m stuck in doors constantly I wanted to be well stocked. There are such good sales these two weeks at Whole Foods. One of my favorite soy ice creams, So Delicious, is on sale so much I might just have to get a pint and risk it being stolen. I couldn’t help but gawk at these as I meandered the bakery section:

Huge Cupcakes

Huge Cupcakes

Really? It should be illegal to display such gawdy cupcakes to those who have hopes of unclogged arteries. I think these were about the size of my face–no lie–which the 3.99 price tag is a testament to, not to mention it came in amazing flavors like mint and peanut butter. If they made these properly sized and priced, I would have been a lot more inclined to get one, but this was slightly ridiculous. What I really was looking for was a black and white cookie like Ada has suggested, sicne I’ve never actually had one of those. I could only buy those by the pack of 10, which I wasn’t looking to splurge on, so I gave up that search for now. In the end, though, I was very delighted with my loot:

Plain Oikos, Cascadian Farms Vanilla Chip Granola Bars, Pumpkin Maple Whoopie Pies

Plain Oikos, Cascadian Farms Vanilla Chip Granola Bars, Pumpkin Maple Whoopie Pie

Oh yeah, that was a good trip. The granola bars are one of my favorite “candy bar granola bars”(i.e. higher sugar than whole grains), and they are a weekly special PLUS I had a coupon. All in all this was 3.74. Props to me for sticking to a budget. I just had to grab that whoopie pie to celebrate Cookie Friday. Pumpkin Maple sounded so delicious and like Fall.

Pumpkin Maple Whoopie Pie

Pumpkin Maple Whoopie Pie

I don’t treat myself to things like this enough. I can’t complain; a bowl of oatmeal with peanut butter and chocolate chips, for as healthy as it is, is also one of the best damn snacks around. But sometimes it’s nice to have something that you can tell someone else put time and effort into making. And when I do go for a sort of treat food, I like it to be food. As in, I recognize and own all the ingredients to this. I watched The Office while eating this. This weeks episode was cute, but I can’t wait for the wedding! That’s going to be the exciting time. I guess it wasn’t a surprise I was hungry when dinner came around after my scant eats, which is good because Friday night means fish at the Ratty:

Steamed Broccoli, Baked Pollock, Acorn Squash, Asparagus

Steamed Broccoli, Baked Pollock, Acorn Squash, Asparagus

Talk about TGIF. Apparently some people don’t like fish, like my friend Adam. What’s with that? I would eat it every night of the week if it were offered more. This was a little dry, but I was just thankful to have it. Same to say about the squash. The asparagus was just… laughable. At least it was some green on the plate? The fish had me happy enough not to care about anything else.

When Ghost Whisperer came around at 8 o’clock, I was ravenous for anything carby and peanut butter and chocolate laden–there was my appetite. Hello, oats:

Pumpkin Oats With Mighty Maple And Maple Syrup

Pumpkin Oats With Mighty Maple And Maple Syrup

Yes, yes, and yes. This bowl was pretty much perfection, especially for watching a show about murdered ghosts. Wait–scratch that last part. But ghost whisperer was really good last night; it kind of followed the same pattern as most episodes and felt like a repeat but I like it when there isn’t a huge twist in the show’s plot episode to episode. When I finished with this bowl, my hunger had actually gone away–what’s up with that? But thankfully not my appetite, which I was happy to feed:

Peanut Butter Oikos With Baking Chips And Vanilla Sugar, Cinnamon Raisin Toast With Vanilla Almond Butter

Peanut Butter Oikos With Baking Chips And Vanilla Sugar, Cinnamon Raisin Toast With Vanilla Almond Butter

Fun Fact: I would prefer baking chips to a real candy bar almost any time(except for maybe Newman’s Own Organic Mocha Milk which I’ve raved about so much). I don’t know why, maybe it’s the baker in me, but I love the flavor of those little chips. Holly asked where I plan on getting my peanut flour on. The brand I was first sent by The National Peanut Board was Byrd Mill so I think I’m going to stick with that and order from their website. I was sent the 12% light but I might try the 12% dark for a nuttier roast. Oh, and of course the Naturally Nutty vanilla almond butter was divine as usual 🙂 I like eating different nut butters because I feel like I’m getting different nutrients, but they flavor almond butter so much less and worse except for Naturally Nutty.

I was so tired sleep came like a breeze to me and was absolutely perfect… until about 1:30 when my dorm neighbors decided to park right outside my door and sit and chat at high volumes for an hour. I had to basically hear their life stories as I tossed and turned, trying to get back to sleep. Why do some people thing adding “I don’t know, I’m drunk right now, but…” makes whatever their saying more interesting or appealing? It doesn’t. I ate a Z-Bar midway through because being awake had my metabolism running like crazy. Needless to say I was annoyed and lost good sleep. Then at 6 my roommates alarm went off for a camping trip he has today. He was in such a rush he ended up being loud as hell stuffing things into his backpack and again waking me up. Once he left I could hear it raining so I reset my alarm, knowing that I would not be very happy at 7. I ended up waking  up at 8:30 since the gym near me opens at 9.

I may be able to complain about sleep, but I couldn’t about running this morning. When I got on the treadmill I felt great, and what was supposed to be a 6.3 miler on the road turned into a 9 at the gym at a great pace. I ended up finishing in 71:44. The better thing might have been cmoing back to an empty dorm where I can sprawl my things out onto the bed and make myself breakfast as loud as I want:

Carrot Ginger Muffin Top With Smart Balance, Yogurt With Cinnamon And Muffin Bottom

Carrot Ginger Muffin Top With Smart Balance, Yogurt With Cinnamon And Muffin Bottom

No part of the muffin went wasted today. The Carrot Ginger muffins from Trader Joe’s is one of my favorites and it pairs really well with Smart Balance “frosting” for some reason; the flavors really work. I added the butt into 4oz plain yogurt with extra cinnamon and stevia and it tasted just like carrot cake. Holy yum I should try that with the whole damn muffin next time. My bad experience of sleeping as well as some other stuff have prompted me to go home today, so I’ll be cleaning up around the dorm until my parents show up.

Plenty of great giveaways out there to shout about today. One Fit Foodie is having one hell of a giveaway.

Open Wallet Day

Posted on September 24, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Good morning? Ever have one of those days when you just need to buy things to make yourself feel better? Well yesterday felt like that day, but I kept it pretty modest(just not entirely on budget). The second I got to Latin class I realized I completely forgot these in my room:

Dorm Keys

Dorm Keys

How could I forget something so adorable? Well that was on my mind all Latin class, speaking of which, yesterday’s discussion was which sounds like a bigger insult: slut or whore. I would feel more offended by slut(though neither term really bothers me because a) I’m a guy and b) I don’t think either really applies). Which do you think? The solution to the problem in class was to just use the Latin word and get the sense. When I got out of class I was so excited that it was Wednesday which meant the Farmers’ Market was on my quad:

Farmers' Market

Farmers' Market

They have a great system where you can pay 200 dollars and get a bag of local products delivered each week. I would love to do that but I’m on a pretty all-inclusive meal plan and wouldn’t know what to do with extra heads of lettuce in my room. What I did get was these guys:

Maple Raspberry Kefir

Maple Raspberry Kefir

Local Corn

Local Corn

Yep, that’s local kefir. I’ve never tried the store brand or any kefir before, but I had to grab this. I can’t wait to try it, since I always try and eat 2 sources of probiotics a day. I can’t decide whether it’d be best straight or with cereal or some other way. How do you eat kefir? Needless to say, kefir wasn’t what was for lunch.

Hugh Jass Salad, Stir Fried Tofu And Veggies, Bean Casserole

Hugh Jass Salad, Stir Fried Tofu And Veggies, Bean Casserole

I’ve definitely picked up a pattern: The lunch room is for protein and veggies, and my dorm is for grains and treats. That’s what makes sense/tastes good to me, so I’ll stick with it while it works. I wasn’t jazzed to try the stir fry again because it upset my stomach last time, but this one was sans noodles and a little less oily, so it wasn’t an issue. The beans were beany(aka good). And I think I got my servings of leafy greens, don’t you? I’m not a big raw broccoli fan because it’s so fiberous; I chew it about 50 times to make sure it doesn’t give me bowling ball stomach syndrome.

This didn’t seem like a lot at the time but it actually held me over through my 2 classes and more. I was thinking of eating something at 3 because that’s my routine, but I decided to try and listen to my stomach, which said it didn’t need/want anything. With that in tummy mind, I went to where not thinking about food is impossible: Whole Foods. Again, I could spend about 30 minutes just browsing the aisles, and I think I did. I ended up with way less than usual but spending a bit more:

Snickerdoodle Ice Cream And Blueberry Bran Muffins

Snickerdoodle Ice Cream And Blueberry Bran Muffins

I definitely set out with hopes of snickerdoodle in my future. When I got there, I had to look at EVERY flavor and change my mind about 100 times. But once it started getting ridiculous, I decided to take what I intended to all along and be happy. Which I was. Very very happy. The muffins were a bit of an “impulse buy”, and an expensive one at 6 dollars. In hindsight, I don’t like the idea of paying so much for something which main ingredients are water and oat bran, but I’m a sucker for a healthy muffin 😦 And at 22o calories, 10g fiber, and 6g protein per muffin, these definitely make the cut. I managed to spill my water bottle all over my bed after taking this photo, but kind of ignored it so I could eat this:

Snickerdoodle Ice Cream

Snickerdoodle Ice Cream

Since I spent longer grocery shopping than I planned, I was actually pretty famished when I got back. This definitely hit the spot, and there were so many cookie dough chunks in the scoops I gave myself(not even on purpose!) that it ate like a meal. Let’s just say I was very very pleased with this “investment”. I figured my diet had been severely lacking in grains since breakfast and was easily convinced into this:

Kashi Mountain Medley Granola

Kashi Mountain Medley Granola

Normally I don’t eat granola except for on yogurt. But like I said, I was jonesing for some grains, and what’s a better source than granola? I didn’t like how this was more chewy than crispy, but it sufficed while I was doing Greek homework. I met up with some of my high school friends for a special local dinner at the Ratty; everything was local from the veggies to the meat–how cool is that? While we were waiting for Mike I had my 4th siting of Emma Watson! I was wicked excited. We even were in the same line inside, and technically ate under the same roof! Anyway, that excitement aside, here was the eats:

Cilantro Chicken, Brussel Sprouts, Turnips And Beets, Stuffed Bell Pepper, Corn On The Cob, Crude Salsa

Cilantro Chicken, Brussel Sprouts, Turnips And Beets, Stuffed Bell Pepper, Corn On The Cob, Crude Salsa

What tasted better than this meal was knowing that it supported local farmers, and that everyone in the Ratty was doing the same, whether they make that their mission or not. I’ve always tried to eat local veggies, which are generally more nutritious. I was excited to try local protein, too, to see if it would feel different eating it. It tasted the same, but felt a little more special, ya know? I don’t think I would have taken the stuffed pepper if I knew it had copious amounts of cheese in it, but I’m glad I did because copious amounts of cheese are always delicious. And one thing I’ve never had to be forced to eat are brussel sprouts; I just love them!

Wednesday nights and quality TV weren’t besties last night, so I started out with some modest google readering homework and a nice muffin:

Blueberry Bran Muffin With Cream Cheese And Chocolate Chips

Blueberry Bran Muffin With Cream Cheese And Chocolate Chips

Here’s a life lesson: Anything healthy tastes better under cream cheese. Take notes, children. This muffin was OK but it wasn’t stellar like the carrot ginger ones from Trader Joe’s, which I think are actually made by the same Massachusetts bakery. These tasted a lot… branier? No, Microsoft, I refuse to believe that’s not a word. One of my biggest qualms in life is that nobody makes blueberry chocolate chip bagels or muffins. What’s with that? I think the two are a match made in heaven. Take a lesson, Panera. I tried to get in to the new ABC show, Modern Family. I have to admit I laughed a lot during it, but it felt like most of the funny moments were from the previews and I’m wondering how it’s going to keep up. More study snackage:

English Muffin With Mighty Maple And Blueberry Jam With Chocolate Chips, Cinnamon Raisin Toast With Cream Cheese

English Muffin With Mighty Maple And Blueberry Jam With Chocolate Chips, Cinnamon Raisin Toast With Cream Cheese

Please excuse me while I eat through my entirely too big stash of bread. Bread’s my number one thing to buy at the store, always, which is a little ridiculous since I usually microwave my grains in water. I still have 3 english muffins, parts of cinnamon raisin and 10-grain loaves, and a whole whole wheat loaf in my freezer, plus 3 bran muffins. Need bread? I’m your boy. I figured why change up the flavors of the night and stuck with blueberry, cream cheese, chocolate chips, and maple. Can’t go wrong with any of that. My dad sent me a funny article around then telling me I worked at the most dangerous college in America over the Summer; of course Emerson has to report a high amount of crime because it’s right on the common where all the crazy shitstuff goes down, but it’s a legit college I promise.

This morning was a treadmill morning on account of my early class. I resolved to go 6 miles before I got on. Can I just say this morning was absolute torture; I don’t know why, but my body never fully got into and I felt like I was fighting a snail’s pace the whole time. With .3 miles to go, nature was calling–loudly. Amazingly I just kept running, finished the 6, and then ran another .05 to the bathroom. I did the 6 in 51 minutes flat, which I wasn’t jazzed about but more happy that I stuck it out for that long and got a good run in. When I got back it was time for a little inspiration to strike for Miss PB&Jenny’s oat’s round up.

Almond Encrusted French Toast Oatmeal, Plain Oikos With Raspberries And Maple Syrup

Almond Encrusted French Toast Oatmeal, Plain Oikos With Raspberries And Maple Syrup

I love my Oikos, but even better is fruit sweetened greek yogurt. Not the kind you can buy, but using actual fruit from your store(or in my case, the freezer). And let’s just call these oats one for the record books, my friends; I feel as though I’ve perfected them and here’s the magic formula,

20g(1/4 cup) oatmeal

20g(1/4 cup) oatbran

160g(2/3 cup) unsweetened vanilla almond breeze

1 egg

15g(1 tablespoon) maple syrup

7g(1 tablespoon) sliced almonds

Cinnamon

Sea Salt

Were you taking notes? Cook the oats in the almond breeze for 2-2 1/2 minutes. Crack in an egg and swirl until broken but not completely mixed. Microwave for a further 1-1 1/2 minutes and top with maple syrup, almonds, cinnamon, and sea salt. If Julia Child ever made oatmeal, this is how she would have made it.

Have Time, Will Grocery Shop

Posted on September 16, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Isn’t this exciting? I’m excited. Be excited! Haha, somethings just go straight to my head.

Yesterday morning I blogged it up and headed out the door. There just isn’t enough time in the a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. I got to class a wee bit late after scrubbing oatmeal off the sides of my bowl(pleasant, right?). The good thing is, though, that it’s another translation class which ends after we’re done translating our homework, so i got out for the day at 11:30. Score. My first instinct was to get my lunch early and have it sit in my room until I’m ready to eat it. Go with your instinct, kids. I didn’t and by the time I went the lines were so long; but rightly so because it wasn’t half bad.

Stuffed Acorn Squash, Tuna, Stewed Tomatoes, Corn

Stuffed Acorn Squash, Tuna, Stewed Tomatoes, Corn

Today’s vegetarian option was stuffed acorn squash. I was thinking they’d be hard but they were actually really soft and sweet like canned pumpkin–delicious AND seasonal. Also from the dining hall was the stewed tomatoes. I’m pretty sure cooking them for that long completely goes against what I’ve been reading in Thrive, but they taste too good to give a damn how much lycopene’s in them. The corn and tuna were from my room; I thought my meal could use a little protein. MarathonMaiden asked a few posts ago how much I use my meal plan in eating. I try to get as much out of it as possible and eat vegetables and protein sources out of the dining hall. I also like to grab fruits on the way out for snacks and breakfast. So basically, I try to squeeze as much out of the system as I can.

Dessert came late around 2 o’clock:

Double Chocolate Dream Vitatop

Double Chocolate Dream Vitatop

This was the last of the chocolate flavors I had to try, so you know it wasn’t going to last very long with me. The first thing I noticed was it had a good amount of white chocolate chips, which was appealing. I microwaved it and it came out nice and melty; the chocolate base was the same as the other vitatops, which I like because it reminds me more of an airy cake than a dense brownie. Unless we’re talking chocolate brownie Z-bar, I’ll take the cake any day. The white chocolate chips had a marshmallow-like taste. It wasn’t quite white chocolate, but it was very vanilla, which I thought contrasted perfectly with the chocolate. I think if it were real white chocolate chips the calories would be a lot higher. Still, I enjoyed it whatever it was and would gladly get these again because my name is Evan and I’m a vanillaholic.

Afterward I went to the correct mailbox where–surprise!–I had mail 🙂

Mail From Stonyfield

Mail From Stonyfield

Kristina from Stonyfield came across my blog and noticed my love of Greek yogurt. Either she’s really perceptive or I’m way too readable. I’m guessing both are true. She offered to send coupons for Oikos yogurt, a product of Stonyfield, which I couldn’t say no to. Oikos is certified organic. All natural is the most important thing to me when picking out a product, but organic isn’t too far behind that. Plus, when you get a milk product, it’s good to go with an organic company like Stonyfield so you know you aren’t getting milk from hormonal cows(you know what I mean). I was kind of already thinking of going to this place, but this totally pushed me over the edge.

Whole Foods

Whole Foods

Isn’t it teeny tiny? It could use some growth hormones. JK. I like it just the way it is. Unfortunately, it’s so small it lacks some of the “essentials”, by which I mean cinnamon raisin english muffins and mocha almond fudge ice cream. But I was still able to get some goodies and hop over to Eastside Market. They had a game where you spin the wheel and get a free prize, which I was super excited for. I won a bag of Haribo gummy bears 😦 No thanks to the artificial colors and flavors. I could have asked to swap prizes but I didn’t want to make a fuss and just politely declined. When I got back, I was mighty satisfied with my loot.

Grocery Shopping Loot

Grocery Shopping Loot

I got all that for 9.89 with coupons and sales. Not too shabby. I honestly think things are just more expensive here, though, which has me looking forward to times when I can shop on my own streets again. I needed to have a cup of redemption to refuel from the walking and shopping:

Redemption

Redemption

Why is this redemption and not coffee frozen yogurt with midnight moo sauce? I’ll tell you. Honestly, it really bugged me last night when I went out and got that sinless cake batter ice cream. I didn’t need it and it wasn’t even what I wanted; this was. But I went with it and all its sucralose and artificial flavorings anyway. I don’t have to eat all naturally; it’s something I want to do and set in front of myself. So when I do something like that, it’s letting myself down in a way because I know I’m stronger than that and should be able to stick to my guns. That being said, no one should dwell on the past, and this frozen yogurt was a sort of toast to looking forward towards progress.

I worked a bit and met my friend Adam for an early dinner. he had ping pong practice at 7 for the club. Should I bother telling him he’s insane or let that one go? Haha.

Cauliflower, Asparagus, Sweet Potato, Salad, Vegan Chickpea Marsala

Cauliflower, Asparagus, Sweet Potato, Salad, Vegan Chickpea Marsala

Again, the Ratty was surprisingly good. Ignore the over chopped veggies and turn to the Chickpea oh-my-this-is-good-but-what-the-hell-is marsala. I don’t think I’ve ever had that before but I actually went back for seconds. Any culinary folk out there wanna tell me what I ate? Also, loved the sweet potato and got a second one of those. With all those seconds in me I went for a quick walk up and down Thayer street, flipped through the new Rachael Ray magazine without intending to buy it(tsk tsk), and jamming to this over the CVS radio speaker. Even if you don’t watch the show, you got to admit that’s the damn sweetest music video EVER. C’mon… admit it.

Last night there was a plethora(vocab word alert) of good television on.

Elan Vanilla Frozen Yogurt And The Biggest Loser

Elan Vanilla Frozen Yogurt And The Biggest Loser

That wasn’t a cup of redemption, that was just frozen yogurt; you need to squint to see the difference. I ended up watching the first half of the Biggest Loser. I love that show. Does anybody else it find it so inspiring?(not to mention appetite increasing?) Half way through that I switched over to Big Brother. Spoiler alert–I was a little disappointed when Kevin got the boot since he actually played well looking back on it all, but I suppose Jordan was a good winner. I don’t get her and Jeff, though. Or why America loves Jeff. I feel like the whole season just started, so it’s a little weird that it’s over. I hope they don’t wait a whole ‘nother year for next season, and that they have more twists.

It occurred to me to do a bit of taste comparison:

Cookie Dough Peanut Butter And Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Spread

Cookie Dough Peanut Butter And Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Spread

I decided to put together in a cage match P.B.Loco’s Cookie Dough Peanut Butter with my patented(not really) peanut butter cookie dough spread. The spread is 1 tablespoon White Chocolate Wonderful to 1 table spoon reduced fat cream cheese. Obviously, there was no loser in this cage match. I liked how the P.B.Loco one introduced the flavor of chocolate. But I also liked the smooth and savory tone to the peanut butter cookie spread, and the fact that there was 2 tablespoons of that versus 1 of the cookie dough peanut butter. Overall, I came to the conclusion that this was a random and pointless taste test I was doing to avoid the Iliad, and that I prefer the peanut butter cookie spread.

This morning I planned on doing something lighter to perk up the legs after yesterday. I ended up going a full 6.5 and doing arms and ab work when I got back. I’m really not good at “going lighter”, am I? I ran by Whole Foods and picked up the new Weekly Buys on my way back. I think the lady was confused when I ran in, grabbed something, and ran out the same door, haha. Hopefully they don’t think I stole anything. When I got back I was ready for Fall In A Bowl again:

Carrot Juice, Plain Yogurt With Pumpkin Butter, Pumpkin Oats With Butter Toffee Almonds And Mighty Maple

Carrot Juice, Plain Yogurt With Pumpkin Butter, Pumpkin Oats With Butter Toffee Almonds And Mighty Maple

Pumpkin Oats With Mighty Maple And Butter Toffee Almonds

Pumpkin Oats With Mighty Maple And Butter Toffee Almonds

Ahh, this is oats at its finest. For my no-fail concoction, I cook 20g oatmeal with 20g oatbran and 160g water. When it comes out I add 90g canned pumpkin and sea salt and microwave it for a further 2 minutes. Then I add 1 tablespoon mighty maple and 7g sliced almonds. The result is so sweet and salty it makes you smile 🙂

Today Stonyfield is 28 cents each at Eastside Market, but I have absolutely no use for yogurt at the moment. This is a dilemma. Then again, I might be so busy with 3 classes catching up on online TV I won’t miss missing the sales. We’ll see. Thanks for finding me at the new domain!

My Brain Was Frieday

Posted on September 12, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

I loved my fluffernutter oats yesterday(obvs) but it’s leaving me with an obvious problem: oats are hard to clean of the side of a bowl. I scrubbed and scrubbed and thankfully got it all before I had to go out in the rain to my 11 o’clock class.

A Dreary Day

A Dreary Day

It’s another Classics class. The best thing about Classics is it’s a pretty small concentration where everyone takes the same classes so I’m already noticing the people who I’ll be doing a lot of studying making friends with. I missed a morning snack, though, because I always feel awkward busting out a bar in class. Don’t get me started on fruit; I love munching on an apple but I feel like every time I take a bite the crunch would wake a dinosaur. Instead I just went out for lunch, and then back to my room to finish it off.

1/2 Corn, 1/2 Avocado, Salad With Zuchinni And Tomato

1/2 Corn, 1/2 Avocado, Salad With Zuchinni And Tomato

Chicken With Olives, Portabella Mushroom, Oregon Veggie Blend

Chicken With Olives, Portabella Mushroom, Oregon Veggie Blend

One part of the Thrive Diet I can get with is eating more raw veggies and leafy greens. I threw together that salad from the salad bar, heated some corn from the farmer’s market, and cut into my own avocado(no, my cafeteria is not cool enough to have avocados. They have guacamole but it’s not the same). On the other plate was olive chicken, “Oregon vegetables”(i.e. green beans and onions), and portabello mushrooms. I forgot how good cooked mushrooms are. I should have grabbed twice that much. On another note, I feel like I’ve been eating chicken a lot because I want to know I’m getting protein, not because I want the chicken. I don’t like this and it’s something I definitely want to figure out a solution for.

After lunch was a double-header of classes. Even though you’re just sitting in a room listening to someone else speak, this really dragged the life out of me. My Greek History professor doesn’t know what he’s saying half the time, which is often more funny than discouraging; he doesn’t like archaeology because they try and date civilizations by things as simple as “pots and pans”. Not sure how much the archaeology majors in the room liked that.

After Epic poetry I grabbed some joe, walked back to my room, and made a snack:

Coffee And Toast With Secret Butter

Coffee And Toast With Secret Butter

No one has figured out what this Naturally Nutty butter is, not like I really expect anyone to since it’s pretty complex. I’ll give you another hint, though: Just because the day wasn’t sunny didn’t mean my snack wouldn’t be. I got an email saying I had a package back at the building I JUST had class at. Frustrating, but well worth the trip.

Crazy Richard's Peanut Butter

Crazy Richard's Peanut Butter

I heard about Crazy Richard’s peanut butter when I was looking up all-natural nut butters. A lot of magazines have voted them as the best in the country, which their consumers who have been loyal for the past 30 years are a testimony to. I was very happy when Nanette agreed to send me some samples. Crazy Richard’s is carried at some Whole Foods and all natural gourmet grocery stores but none around here. Thanks, Nanette! I can’t wait to try your family’s delicious peanut butter. I also plan to hand in requests for my local Whole Foods to carry this brand so I can refer my friends and family to it if I enjoy it(which I’m really hoping I will).

The rain only picked up and it started thundering. In my own house wrapped in a blanket in my PJ’s I might like this but it’s not so fun at college running to the dining hall. We were supposed to have an outdoors BBQ tonight but that got shifted inside.

Escarole Soup With Tofu, Corn, Scrod, Carrots, Watermelon

Escarole Soup With Tofu, Corn, Scrod, Carrots, Watermelon

I was sooo happy to see next to the BBQ chicken an alternative: baked scrod! I’ll take fish over poultry any day. The corn was OK but not as good as the one from the farmer’s market. I also recently discovered the tofu at the salad bar; I wasn’t sure what to do with it after plopping it on my plate so I threw it in some of the soup–delicious. I know for some people the texture is off-putting but for me it’s a total turn on… you know what I mean. And for good BBQ measure I threw a pickle and some watermelon on my plate. I give so much reason for people to think I’m weird at the dining hall. I take pictures of my food, and I salt everything(Yes, I salted the soup and the watermelon). I’m wondering what’s wrong with these people that they haven’t asked anything about that.

Rainy nights always make me feel like a movie and popcorn. Unfortunately my stomach was about 12 times its size after that dinner plus some watermelon on the way out, not to mention I forgot all my DVD’s. Determined to make the night special, I pulled out the most amazing sounding Vitatop.

Fudgy Peanut Butter Vitatop

Fudgy Peanut Butter Vitatop

From the beginning I was worried about this one–worried for its own sake. Anything that calls itself “fudgy” and “peanut butter” is setting some high expectations for itself. “Fudgy” is a little misleading since I’m pretty sure this has the soft, cake-like base as any other chocolate vitatop. That’s one of the things I really like about them; they taste like a light and airy baked good even though they’re from the freezer. The fact that there were 4 peanut butter chips across the whole top seemed a little sad; and the peanut butter tasted a bit more like dietetic peanut butter than the real deal. If I were a dieter this might be more appealing, but I could use all the calories I can get and prefer to smother things with peanut butter, so this was a bit of a let down. Overall, the vitatop was OK, but didn’t leave me loving it. I’m still a bigger fan of the deep chocolate vitatop and chocolate pomegranite vitabrownie.

I had some more unpictured snacks as I watched Larry King Live. Normally I hate that show but Kathy Griffin was the guest and she’s always hysterical. Have you seen her Kate Gosslin spoof?

I knew it was supposed to rain this morning, but it seemed good enough to go out. Bad idea. Not a mile out it starting pouring cats and dogs. And since you know me, you know I’m too stubborn-headed to turn around, so I went the full 6.4 miles livid and drenched. All I wanted to do was shower and eat some oatmeal when I got back. One thing I don’t like about having roommates who sleep in is making breakfast. Let’s face it: oatmeal and microwaves make a lot of noise. But I try to do what I’m going to do and just as quietly as possible. Breakfast this morning kind of reflected how I was feeling: a mess.

Oatmeal With SB PB And Banana, Plain Yogurt With Vanilla Stevia, Maple Syrup, And Peanut Flour

Oatmeal With SB PB And Banana, Plain Yogurt With Vanilla Stevia, Maple Syrup, And Peanut Flour

Something rain makes me want a nice, thick peanut butter like smart balance. For the first time I tried banana in my oatmeal–not a fan. It just made the bowl taste more plain and distracted from the peanut butter. I was looking for a change from chocolate chips but CLEARLY I’ll have to go back to them. Oh what a hard life it is… 😉 This yogurt concoction with the peanut flour is probably better suited for post-run with it’s carb:protein ratio than other’s I’ve tried, but I still prefer vanilla Chobani with peanut flour. It’s more rich, thick, and decadent.

I was planning on taking a trip home today already but I’m so happy to be doing so after that awful run. I have a bag of wet clothes now begging to be washed. Hopefully I’ll hit up a Trader Joe’s back home since there are none here and get some dorm-room goodies(on my parent’s pocket, that is). I also can’t wait to see my dog again who I hear misses me(though that could be a big fat lie) and maybe even a special dinner? We’ll see 🙂

Learning How To Hold Them, How To Fold Them

Posted on September 11, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Yesterday morning I had the 3rd semester Greek I was too intimidated to sign up for. Sure, what was on the board at the beginning of the class looked like complete gibberish, but I’m starting to feel with the notes at the back of the book time I will relearn the language and do quite well in the class. And the students and professor seemed much more mature and better than the intro class, which I also appreciated. I had gotten an email that a package was waiting for me so after class I tracked it down to a sketchy warehouse and look what I found!

Vitatop Super Sampler

Vitatop Super Sampler

The folks from Vitalicious agreed to send me their super sampler for review! I’m very excited for these. My local Market Basket only carried a smattering of flavors which I had already tried all of. I think from this whole box I’ve only had the deep chocolate(coincidently my favorite so far) so I can’t wait to give them all a review. The best thing about vitatops is how fortified with vitamins and minerals they are; I’d prefer to get all that from food but since I’m no longer purchasing food or cooking for myself, I’ve been thinking about a multi-vitamin. These are much better–and tastier. Thanks, Vitalicious!

I knew it was time to bite the bullet and do my first load of laundry. Of course this never goes smoothly for anyone, right? It wasn’t that bad except for the fact that my Brown ID which should have money for laundry on it didn’t and I ended up scrambling around for street vendors to make change and give me quarters(old-school style). I probably looked insane running around eating lunch because at this point in the day I was starving.

Grilled Chicken, Black Beans With Salsa, Couscous Salad

Grilled Chicken, Black Beans With Salsa, Couscous Salad

The grilled chicken was plain, which was just what I was looking for. It let me drown dab it with 365 steak sauce. The couscous salad was definitely different and something I wouldn’t mind now and again. And black beans are quickly becoming a favorite of mine. Good thing that they’re so proteinous and fiberous.

After I got enough quarters that they probably thought I’d open a bank, I went downstairs to work the machines. I accidently payed for the dryer above mine to go for an additional 60 minutes(oops) which cost me another 5 quarters(double oops) but I got it all worked out in the end. While I waited I shucked corn in my dorm room–not recommended. Those darn little hairs are so hard to clean. And one of my corns had this to reveal:

Maggot In Corn

Maggot In Corn

That’s what you risk when you buy fresh from a farmer’s market. It kind of creeped me out that I might have eaten that if I wasn’t paying attention, but I just shoved it out. And when I was done so was my laundry.

Amazingly everything was the same color going in as it was coming out: joyous. I still had more to do but I was out of quarters for the day. One vitatop was still in my mind after unpacking it and shoving it in my teeny-tiny dorm freezer so I knew I had to try it.

Chocolate Fig Vitatop

Chocolate Fig Vitatop

This smelled just like a Fig Newman, which I loved. After being thawed in the microwave a bit it was ready to be eaten. I thought the flavor was pretty decent, but I wasn’t rushing out to buy more, which I normally am tempted to do with limited edition things. Maybe it’s because I’ve had fig almond blondies and fig jam at my disposal all summer that these didn’t taste as special as they sounded. Don’t get me wrong, they were definitely delicious. But I would stick with the deep chocolate variety in comparison. I ate this on a walk to my favorite place:

Whole Foods

Whole Foods

Where I picked up some real goodies:

Blue Diamond Honey Almond Butter, Endangered Species Dark Chocolate Mint Chocolate

Blue Diamond Honey Almond Butter, Endangered Species Dark Chocolate Mint Chocolate

Believe it or not, I haven’t boughten a honey almond butter before, and I was able to get this for 3 dollars between sales and coupons. The mint chocolate was also a sale item and something I’ve been craving this week. I don’t like spending money on food while I should be eating from my meal plan, but for 5.08(the cost of these products) I got over 2000 calories, which is really quite great when you think about it. As long as I don’t buy things like organic celery(lol at the thought) I think it’s a smart purchase for my stomach and my wallet. Speaking of eating up my food, I had this when I got back to my dorm:

Elan's Vanilla Frozen Yogurt

Elan's Vanilla Frozen Yogurt

Yes, I brought one of those adorable silly little cone cups from home. I’m still a little bumbed the frozen yogurt melted and refroze cause it’s a bit icy, but it’s still decent; plus, I won’t let myself buy a new one until I finish the last one. I’m thinking I should just wait until my parents come down to buy my next pint, anyway. The Whole Foods here has a strawberry goat’s milk ice cream with balsamic vinegar swirl. Umm, holy yum? It’s 7 dollars, though, so I ain’t paying for it.

I read a bit of the Iliad before dinner. God I forgot how much I hated that book. Shame, too, because it’s like the number 1 piece of Classical literature and I’ll probably be facing it 10’s of times in my future. For dinner we went to the Ratty and met another friend from high school who’s in her Junior year.

Black Beans, Cajun Corn, Broccoli, Baked Potato with Salsa

Black Beans, Cajun Corn, Broccoli, Baked Potato with Salsa

Black beans are officially my bffl(best food for life). The cajun corn was nice and spicy, but I hate it when something has flavor and you don’t know what the flavor’s from. The broccoli was just… sad. After we went to the activity fair; unfortunately, it was mostly just “legit” clubs. Where’s the get-together-and-watch-season-20-of-Survivor club? I’m sure it will pop up soon. I grabbed some decaf and went back to my room to get minty fresh.

Endangered Species Dark Chocolate With Rain Forest Mint

Endangered Species Dark Chocolate With Rain Forest Mint

I like how this chocolate has a 72% cacao base; it makes it very dark and slightly bitter. The mint is refreshing and noticable at first, but the flavor kind of subsides as the chocolate melts. I like how solid the bar is–it doesn’t seem like it would melt easily even after a long day in your pocket. Overall, I thought this was good, but I don’t know if I’d be buying it again. The fact that the mintiness disappears with time is too disappointing and I’d like to find a bolder brand.

I had a great night of watching Big Brother(c’mon, Kevin!) and Grey’s Anatomy(dramaaaaa) while eating some savory oats:

Oatbran/meal And An Egg

Oatbran/meal And An Egg

Why are these so good? Oh right, the half a shaker of salt I put on them. I also managed to finish reading my homework in the Iliad a little early so I picked up the next chapter of this book:

Thrive

Thrive

I already have a lot of problems with this book by page 70, but I’m going to go ahead and finish it before it frustrates me enough to throw it out the window. I know I’m completely electing to read it and Brendan Brazier is just sharing his own diet, but I feel like he comes off as condescending to any other sort of way of eating, not just the typical America refined foods. And of course I take issue with his food pyramid; grains at the top and no spot for peanut butter or chocolate? We’ll have to agree to disagree.

This morning I went a little more than 6 miles. I’m definitely feeling stronger than at the beginning of the week when this was all new to me but I haven’t had that feeling of “why don’t I just keep running to 10” since I was home. I’m curious as to how much of this is the new courses, how much is mental, and how much is dietary. Hopefully things will keep improving. I had one of those I-have-no-idea-what-to-have-for-breakfast days. Don’t you hate those? Luckily fluffernutter oats is always a pleasing standby.

Fluffernutter Oats

What is fluffernutter oats some of you may be wondering? It’s 20g oatbran/20g oatmeal cooked and topped with 1 tablespoon fluff(or technically an all natural, vegan, marshmallow creme), banana pineapple rum jam, and a peanut butter(in this case Mighty Maple). Yes, there are oats under that blanket of goodness in the picture even though you can’t see them 😉 I also finished my containers of vanilla Chobani AND Odwalla carrot juice. But good news on the carrot juice! One of the cafes here sells it for the mondo-ridiculous price of 8.50 but I can use a meal credit to pay for it, which I have ample of because I don’t eat breakfast at the crapacafeteria. So don’t worry; my natural orange hue will remain in tact.

Today is supposed to rain the day away, which works for me. i’ve fallen so far behind on my TV watching because we don’t get the Food Network. I know, I should right to whoever’s in charge; how am I supposed to get the recent doings of Charm City Cakes?
