Disgusting

Posted on May 26, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Warning: I’m not going for the pretty post today.

You could ask, when do I ever go for the pretty post? Well played, well played. But everything today was just pretty gross and disgusting, no matter how good it got.

The thought of eating 2 sticks of earth balance, or any fat really, grosses me out. So why do they taste so damn good in this recipe? Note to self: Don’t ever cook that rich again if you’re going to have leftovers for the next 3 days.

Running 14 miles is disgusting, especially when New England decides to warm up. Was I proud? Damn straight. But it was hot. There was cow manure involved. Every part of me got sunburned. And you get really dirty running without a shirt on. In the end, I looked like this:

Disgusting, no? I’m practicing to compete with some of Holly’s self-portraits. I’ve got a long way to go on growing out the hair and getting that kind of frizz.

The entire soda industry is–let’s face it–disgusting. There’s high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors and flavors and preservatives. And all those plastic rings kill sea-life. Not cool, Coke, not cool. Instead, I made a much cleaner version of “Sprite” for recovery: 1/2 cup lemon seltzer, 1/2 cup organic limeade, fresh lime, and some light agave nectar. Sweetness.

The raw olive “cheese” from Grezzo’s looks like a pile of poo; I’m aware. But it tastes deliciously rich in olives. And was perfect on a salad with some organic balsamic vinegar. Oh, and this is the best 2.50 you will ever spend:

Don’t look at the nutritional information; it’s not pretty. “Golden” means fried, but it’s fried by Whole Foods, so it’s magical and delicious. I love keeping one of these around for times I really just don’t feel like cooking, even if I’m taking in my daily limit of way too many things.

Sweet potatoes? Love them! But after they’ve been roasted, grilled, and sitting in the refrigerator for 3 days… There’s a reason that’s not in any recipe book.

…I don’t have any more words to defend myself. Even as a food blogger, sometimes you gotta eat a little disgustingly.

That is 6 squares of my favorite dark chocolate by Endangered Species and a pomegranate Chobani with Justin’s chocolate almond butter. The only disgusting thing here is how much chocolate I can eat in a day. If anybody ever hears of an organic chocolate eating contest, send it my way. We can split the prize money.

What’s the last thing that’s made you think “Gross!”? For me, it was the fish at the beginning of the post. It’s an Asian carp, and it’s making a move to be the next, big, sustainable seafood. Not on my plate, it isn’t.

Naughty. Sexy. Food.

Posted on May 3, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

In case you took the weekend off and are catching up

I feel like I’ve eaten everything naughty and delicious already and it’s not even 7pm. That’ll cure those Monday blues šŸ˜€

Golden Sesame Tofu, Steamed Broccoli, Raw Baby Carrots

Because, really, what’s more naughty than golden sesame tofu ala Whole Foods?

Golden Sesame Tofu

Golden Sesame Tofu

I took a peak at the potential nutritional of this. Yeah, don’t do that; just eat it and enjoy. I love this every time. And at 2.50 it’s a cheap way to get a good meal! Fried tofu definitely doesn’t have me wanting to run a marathon right afterwards, though.

Vegan Chocolate Fudge

Vegan Chocolate Fudge

For dessert and before going to office hours I had a piece of vegan fudge. Obviously, because this has all been vegan so far, it all must have been good for me, right? Yeah, no. But so many foodgasms here.

Cashew Almond KIND Bar And Strawberry Serenity Kombucha

Cashew Almond KIND Bar And Strawberry Serenity Kombucha

For a “cleaner” snack I ate a cashew almond KIND bar(my favorite) along with a strawberry Kombucha. I definitely was not a fan of this flavor. But I was happy to get rid of a bar and a bottle as part of Project Cleanout.

Red Delicious Apple

An apples nice and clean, right? Not washed and non-organic. Oooo, I just keep getting dirtier.

Sweet Potato Fries, BBQ Baked Beans, Daiya Mozzarella

And dinner was this one last naughty, dirty, uncomposed plate of deliciousness.

Vegan Cheesy BBQ Fries And Beans

And all vegan! Oh, Daiya, I love you. And it’s allĀ thanks to Caitlin for this flavor pairing of sweet potato and BBQ beans. 80% of the sweet potato fries were completely burnt; one of the perks of being home surely will be that, at home, the oven isn’t floors below me. And in case you were wondering, fork or fingers on the fries? It’s all dirty and all delicious, so yes and yes.

Now, really, I should do something better with my time than eat naughty foods while watching the latest Dr. Who(Daleks, again?!). In the meantime, check outĀ Averie’s stevia giveaway,Ā Gina’s iHerb giveaway, and Katie’s shopping spree.

Raw Foods And Fried Foods

Posted on April 27, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

If you asked me what I loved to eat, I’d probably answer fried foods and raw foods. At least the one balances out the other, right? The easiest ways I find to get raw foods in is a fresh salad:

Maple Spinach Salad With Raw Cheddar, Avocado, Maple Tofu, And Maple Walnuts

Maple Spinach Salad With Raw Cheddar, Avocado, Maple Tofu, And Maple Walnuts

Let’s call this the “garbage can” salad because I threw whatever I wanted to get rid of on it. And it worked! The base was spinach tossed with maple syrup and walnut oil. In the mix was 1/2 an avocado, a Next Generation Dairy cheddar cheese stick, and leftover maple tofu, topped with Tierra Farm‘s maple glazed nuts. I made this to-go to eat in class like always on Tuesdays but it didn’t make it that far 8-| I just couldn’t resist; and it was so tasty! I went with my hunger and ate it and went off to class.

Almond Protein Plus Boomi Bar

Almond Protein Plus Boomi Bar

Mid-afternoon I snacked on an almond protein plus Boomi Bar. I’ve always wanted to make my own bar like this: throw it all together and hope it works. I like that this was 3 simple ingredients: almonds, honey, and whey protein isolate. I didn’t care much for protein isolate, though(I rarely do). And the flavor wasn’t quite as good as Perfect Foods Bars(reviewed here).

Organic Red Delicious Apple

I had an apple after taking another Greek language test. If you remember, I made a small fortune off of taking them earlier in the semester, and I’m hoping the same for this one. Although since I’m competing against juniors and seniors who know much more than me, I’m wary.

Raw Brownies

Raw Brownies

I also found time to “bake” raw brownies this afternoon, except I used a different recipe with a few new, secret ingredients. I’m not sure how they’ll be once they set. And the added ingredients definitely added a ton of fat. The batter was tasty, at least.

Food Processor

My favorite thing about vegan desserts is that you can always eat the batter. I think I had a little too much of this. Blech. But it was good! Can’t wait to see how these come out.

Preparing Dinner

Preparing Dinner

For dinner I gave my first attempt at frying! I filled my pan with a good coating of sesame oil and laid down some tofu strip. I let them brown for about 3 minutes on each side.

And then for my Asian-inspired dinner. I probably could have let the tofu go for longer; it certainly didn’t taste like Whole Foods. But I was really proud of this! I feel like a whole new culinary style has opened up to me, and I can start to use a Paula Dean cookbook šŸ˜‰ Is a deep fryer in store for me over the Summer? Probably not. I’ll let Whole Foods handle that.

Do you/Did you ever walk around the neighborhood a lot? Usually, after dinner(especially a good, big one), we would walk around the neighborhood for fun and for health. I feel like when the weather’s nice everyone’s out around where I live. I can’t wait for that during the Summer again! And I definitely feel like I could use a walk now. It might not be as good without the neighborhood, but I’ll find somewhere.

On Fried Foods And Chocolate

Posted on April 19, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review, Rant | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

2 things

  1. I’m a little slow on catching up on comments, but I love how you all fully support my chocolate addiction. You won’t beĀ disappointedĀ today, either.
  2. I try to keep this blog food and running focused, leaving out most of the rest of my day and mood. But I’ll admit right now I’m feeling a little frustrated from the housing lottery for next year šŸ˜¦ The whole thing is a stress breeder, but basically I had to throw my hands in the air, pass, and throw myself at the mercy of the housing Gods, and probably won’t know what’s the deal until the Summer. Right now, I just about want to curl into bed with a bowl of oatmeal and drift off, but I just kept repeating these thoughts in my mind: No matter what, I will be a passionate food blogger, I will run and love it, I will have my wonderful friends and family, and wherever my bed might be or rooming situationĀ will not change that. *Sigh* It feels even better writing it out. On to the eats!
Salad With Broccoli, Snap Peas, Beats, And Golden Sesame Tofu

Salad With Broccoli, Snap Peas, Beats, And Golden Sesame Tofu

I love fried food. What did you think, I’m not human? At least fried tofu is a little healthy, right? Right? I could never fry it myself; that’s why I let Whole Foods do it and only pick it up once and a while. It made this salad glorious, along with steamed broccoli, cooked sugar snap peas, and raw beets. Yum! I haven’t eaten beets in sooo long(I hate their dubious side effect). I forgot how much they’re nature’s candy(along with nature’s red dye #40…)!

Tazo Thrive

Tazo Thrive

I sipped some of Tazo’s new Thrive tea during the meal to make it feel like I was at a Chinese restaurant. You can read my review to find out more about it, or just know that it tasted like a good green tea.

Endangered Species Organic Smooth Dark Chocolate

Endangered Species Organic Smooth Dark Chocolate

That salad held me over a really long time, but eventually I got munchy. Can I say just the sight of the blue butterfly makes my heart flutter a bit for this chocolate bar? I know I said I wouldn’t touch the 3 I bought until I ate up more of the ones I had opened…

Endangered Species Organic Smooth Dark Chocolate

Endangered Species Organic Smooth Dark Chocolate

I lied. To be fair, I said that because I didn’t want to have another half eaten chocolate bar lying around. There was no survivors here. I ate and loved the whole Endangered Species bar–no shame. The most “dubious” ingredient on the list is only soy lecithin, which–so long as it’s from non-GMO soy–I don’t really give a second thought. Can I now have another?

Spinach, Avocado, Southwest Wildwood Veggie Burger, Mango Kombucha

Spinach, Avocado, Southwest Wildwood Veggie Burger, Mango Kombucha

I packed dinner and ate it at the afformentioned lottery: spinach, 1/2 an avocado with sea salt, a Southwestern Wildwood veggie burger, and a mystic mango kombucha. Really? Could I have upped the fried food today a little more? This was seriously one of my favorite kombuchas thus far. It was also a very different drink. Because of the mango puree, this was more like a juice than a tea, and had a higher sugar content. But it still had that great, raw kombucha fizz to it and a tropical twist. I will definitely be getting this one next time they go on sale again.

I need carbs. Or anything not fried. My brain feels fried from tonight. I’m sure I’ll feel better in the morning. G’night, and go enter Lauren’s giveaway for Amazing Grass goodies.
