How Do You Feel NOW?

Posted on March 11, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Morning, all! How are you feeling today? How about right now? If the difference doesn’t make sense, hopefully it will soon. Right now I feel on top of the world because of some good news I’ll share at the end ūüėČ

Love Raw Foods Cashew Butter

Last night I broke out this new cashew butter I was sent to sample and review from Blue Mountain Organics. It’s raw so the nuts have only been soaked, low-temp dried, and slow ground. I was interested to see if it would still taste as “nutty”.

Chocolate Avocado Pudding With Raw Caramel Sauce

I was really craving something caramel, but wanted to keep it vegan while I could. I read on a website that an equal mixture of agave, maple syrup, and cashew butter makes for a raw caramel sauce and gave it a try. The result wasn’t incredible but it was pretty tasty no less; with a little sea salt it definitely tasted more caramel-like. But I think for something really raw and caramel you’ll want to try lucuma powder(not like I ever have but it’s what I’ve heard). Anyway, it went well over chocolate avocado pudding made with stevia and almond milk.

Banana Oatmeal With Raw Cashew Butter And Maple Syrup

For a better taste of the butta’, I went with a bowl of banana oats with 1/2 a banana and the grains for a small bowl, along with a HUGE dollop of cashew butter and some maple syrup. I loved how sweet it tasted, even without the syrup. And the¬†consistency¬†was nice and airy. I definitely wouldn’t have known there was anything “different” about it because it was raw; it tasted like cashews should. And I equally loved watching Modern Family while eating this; how hilarious was the turtle plot line?

Oatmeal With White Chocolate Wonderful

One thing to know about me is I like to go to bed FULL; not hungry, or even satisfied, but feeling really well fueled. On days with long runs in the morning, I can go 14 miles and 3 hours without having time to eat, so I definitely need that night time energy. When I asked myself “How do you feel now?” after that first bowl, I knew I wasn’t there yet and made another with white chocolate wonderful. That hit the spot.

Making Raw Chocolate

As it turned out, when I woke up, I felt more or less like I’d been hit by a bus; clearly, it was not a runner’s high or anything. Still, I wanted to get to the gym. 3 times I started and stopped walking. My excuses to keep going were always something like “I might¬†feel like going later and would have more time now” or “the weekend would be so much better for a rest day”. Both of those thoughts were true, but then it hit me: I don’t feel like running now and that’s when matters. Maybe I will feel like going to the gym later, and if so I’ll have to find the time to squeeze in. But instead, I spent my morning doing something more practical: Making raw coconut oil chocolate ūüėÄ This was a triple batch I made into 3 bars for refrigeration.

Chocolate Avocado Pudding With Raw Chocolate, Soy Yogurt With Hemp Seeds

Breakfast ended up being another expression of feelings. I felt hungry earlier than usual, so I ate earlier. I felt like eating vegan and not oatmeal, so I avoided oats and dairy products. And I had a definite sweet tooth, so I might have gone a little chocolate/stevia happy. Isn’t listening to your feelings great? I had a So Delicious soy yogurt with Bob’s Red Mill hulled hemp seeds for protein, and along side that more chocolate avocado pudding(stevia sweetened) with 1/2 a batch of coconut oil chocolate on top. For the pudding, I cracked open a container of my secret ingredient…

So Delicious Coconut Milk Kefir

You can really use whatever milky liquid you like in the recipe–it’s only 3 tablespoons anyway. Usually I use almond milk since I always seem to have an open container, and occasionally I’ll use coconut milk but that’s a little much to use all the time. A good option is this coconut milk kefir, which is almost as thick as full fat coconut milk, much lighter, and has probiotics to boot! It’s a bit on the pricey side, but I let myself grab some whenever it’s on sale(which it is in the New England area at Whole Foods right now fyi).

Another reason I let myself get a little “desserty” with breakfast was because I got really good news right before making it. I’ve been a little secretive with all the extra things I have going on this week; some of that is for other’s privacy, some of that is because they’re boring things I wouldn’t trouble you with. One of those “boring things” was an optional Greek exam put on by the Classics department here for freshmen. As it turns out, I came in 1st along with a classmate of mine and we both got $875 in prize! Maybe now I can afford a new bowl that’s not plastic, made for a 5 year old, and bright “apple green”? ūüėȬ†Of course, that doesn’t excuse me from actually going to Greek class, which I need to do now ūüôā

Savory Seventeen

Posted on December 16, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Good morning! Is it even still going to be morning by the time I post this, address my full google reader, and emails? Oh, who knows, but I’ve got Kelly Ripa and Anderson Cooper to keep me company.

Did you know yesterday was National Cupcake Day? Well, I was not in the position to go out and buy something for the fake festivities, but instead I brought the party to my oatmeal.

Oatmeal With NuttZo And Cream Cheese Frosting

The NuttZo was so fun and unique! I loved the copious amounts of seed and nut chunks. I’ve added it of my list of things to write reviews for, even though it wasn’t from the company or anything. I’ll definitely have that up after the weekend, if you’re curious. Meanwhile, this recipe had me not caring that I didn’t have a cupcake. This frosting is too good. I could(and sort of did) just eat it by the spoonful–yum.

Apparently on days when you don’t run 12 miles your hunger doesn’t go raging either. Who knew? That snack about did it for me in the afternoon as I worked on my final paper. It’s a very different assignment and basically I’m writing a screenplay about 5 ancient figures. Writing a play is tough work! I couldn’t imagine having to do it more often like some other bloggers. For dinner all I wanted was peanut butter, but I worried having oatmeal with peanut buter might make me lack veggies for my diet. Instead I decided to try to make Peanut BBQ Tofu.

Maple Syrup, Ketchup, Crazy Richard's Chunky Peanut Butter

How do you make BBQ baked tofu with a microwave and no BBQ sauce? Well, you get a little creative. What is BBQ sauce but sugar and tomato at its core? I mixed up 1 tablespoon chunky peanut butter, 1 teaspoon maple syrup, and 2 teaspoons ketchup. Then I brushed that on two pieces of Soft tofu and “baked” it in my microwave by cooking it at a low power for 15 minutes(note: this actually worked well for “baking” so long as you check every so often to drain excess liquid).

Peanut BBQ Baked Tofu, Broccoli With Peanut Flour, Green Beans

I think I went a little peanut crazy here. The tofu was awesome. I mean, it might have been able to be a little better if it were made properly, but truly this was something to be repeated. The broccoli with peanut flour was… interesting. It wasn’t bad, it just was what it was. Plus it was some good protein so no complaints.¬†I think I’m starting a new tradition…

Q.Bel Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Wafer Rolls

…by having a chocolatey dessert every night after dinner. That’s a good tradition, right? I picked these up at Whole Foods yesterday and they didn’t make it 12 hours around me! Ha. They have great milk chocolate and peanut butter flavor. A Charlie Brown Christmas was on so chocolate and coffee totally went with the mood.

After Charlie Brown I realized I was exhausted; what a good reminder that you don’t need to run to tucker yourself out. I had a moment where I thought to myself “You can’t go to bed early. Can you? You can! Do it”. After that I shut my computer off at 9:20 and started winding things down. First I tasted this:

One Lucky Duck Cranberry Honey Bunches Bar

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from a “gourmet granola bar”. I believe this was gluten free and definitely an interesting blend of ingredients, but it didn’t have much flavor, and I figured sugar right before bed was not what I needed, so I ate about half and saved the rest for a rainy day. I also had what’s becoming an obligatory bowl of oatmeal.

Oatmeal With Smart Balance And Advent Chocolate

No complaints here. I think the combination of peanut butter and chocolate makes this like a Reeses. After all that, I probably didn’t get to bed too much earlier than normal, but I still felt good when I woke up at 6:30. I can’t say I wanted any bar in particular but I just grabbed this to get out the door quick.

Nature's Path Orange Chocolate Optimum Energy Bar

Really, anything with chocolate would do, as always ;-)When I first got there, I was the only person. Before I knew it, the gym was packed. It’s a tiny satellite gym, so I was worried someone might want my treadmill, but I kept going. In fact, I kept going and going and felt great! The rest day really must have helped, because people kept leaving and the gym emptied back out and before I knew it I ran 17 miles again. I set that distance PR 2 days ago and today it felt almost effortless. I even did it over 2 minutes faster finishing in 2:24:38. Woohoo! After a quick shower I threw together something for recovery

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Walnut Butter, NuttZo, And Maple Syrup, Coconut Milk Kefir With Wild Berry Amazing Grass

Again, my hunger wasn’t raging and nothing really was too appealing–maybe I’m coming down with something? No excuse not to get some NUTrition, so I threw together oatmeal with walnut butter and NuttZo–soo good! And then instead of yogurt for probiotics, I mixed a cup of So Delicious Coconut Milk Plain Kefir with Kidz Wild Berry SuperFood Amazing Grass. This was like a nicely blended smoothie; I couldn’t believe it didn’t require a blender and was so healthy. Kefir is definitely a new favorite way to get probiotics.

I did it! I’m finishing this all before noon! As for my inbox… let’s not talk about it ūüėČ Time for more studying! Have a wonderful day!

Caffeine Hangover

Posted on October 22, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Alright, folks. I have a midterm in 2 hours so let’s make this snappy(jk, I write most of this the night before anyway ;-))

Yesterday felt like one big caffeine hangover after Wednesday’s amazing night. The sad thing was I didn’t even have any caffeine besides what was in the food itself; I’m such a light-weight. Being at home yesterday turned out not to be such an inconvenience.¬†My dog had a doctor’s appointment halfway towards Brown so I ended up just hitching a ride that way. I would have preferred if it wasn’t so damn early that I had to run, shower, eat, and blog within a couple of hours, but I made do.

Montana

Montana

I would like to say he was big and brave, but he’s totally a wimp. He was shaking the moment he knew where he was, and all they were doing was following up on an ear infection. He has a lot of infections/allergies. He’s also grumpy a lot and likes to sit on the couch near the TV. Hmm, maybe that thing they say about owners and dogs is true. I ended up getting back to campus exactly at the time I would have got out of class had I had it. I swung by The Ratty because I was starving, and put away all my loot from the night before as I ate:

2 Eggs With Ketchup And Steak Sauce, Black Bean CousCous Salad, Zuchinni, Brocoli

2 Eggs With Ketchup And Steak Sauce, Black Bean CousCous Salad, Zuchinni, Brocoli

Did you know eggs scrambled in a bowl and microwaved for a few minutes will cook and fluff? I didn’t know that, but I’m glad they do, because I really wanted something savory for the steak sauce to go on and I was out of vegan burgers(from vegan burgers to eggs. How ironic…). I am loving Trader Joe brand ketchup. It’s a lot less sweet and a lot more vinegary than other brands I’ve had. This is a highly recommended TJ product if you have one near you.

All that party-hardying made me very behind on google reader, but I had(somewhat) caught up by 3pm. Isn’t that a great feeling? Not when you haven’t studied, but otherwise yet. For once, I actually felt like going to Whole Foods was a chore. I tried to convince myself I had enough food, but surprisingly opening and closing the fridge 3 times doesn’t make bread appear. I grabbed a snack and hit the road.

Multibran Vitatop With Mighty Maple

Multibran Vitatop With Mighty Maple

Dear, Miss Everythingtarian

Please stop making so many tasty dishes using Mighty Maple. It’s making me crave it at an alarming rate and run through my jar. Otherwise, I might have to stop reading your hilarious blog. It’s not me you, it’s you me.

Anyway, it was a great day for a walk in N.E. The weather was sooo good yesterday, it felt like Spring! I walked around Whole Foods a lot(as usual) but did major self editing at the check out and walked out with the “bare essentials”:

Cinnamon Raisin Rolls, Plain Oikos

Cinnamon Raisin Rolls, Plain Oikos

I’m not going to lie. It definitely hurt putting back other things like my Gardenburgers, Sweet Scoops frozen yogurt, and the non-existent¬†salmon from the salad bar. On the other hand, I knew I had 15 dollars after this to make last for the rest of October before I start digging into. I resisted the urge to call anyone to rant/tantrum, and just admired my new shopping bag:

Oikos Grocery Bag

Oikos Grocery Bag

Isn’t it nifty? I like it a lot more than the Stonyfield one because it’s more my color, fabric, and yogurt. I also love the new designs for the Oikos containers, but sadly they only had those out for the 5.3oz ones. I tried getting back quickly so that I could make a quick snack because I was stahhving and–hopefully–study. The latter didn’t happen but boy was the former a success!

Fluffernutter Oats With Banana Peanut Butter

Fluffernutter Oats With Banana Peanut Butter

I decided to test out my new¬†Banana Peanut Butter sent to me by¬†Sunland. By test, I really mean I threw this one to the lions; fluffernutter oats have a huge place in my heart and this peanut butter needed to fill some big shoes. Right when I opened the jar I noticed 2 promising things: it smelled like fresh sliced banana bread with peanut butter slathered on it and it was thick and smooth like PB&Co. That was all promising and a good indication for the peanut butter itself. It didn’t melt quite like I was hoping/expecting, but the flavor was spot on. It reminded me of having a sandwich on Wonder Bread in kindergarten. If any nut butter can do that over whole grains, it’s a winner in my book.

These oats were good, but not filling. That was out of the ordinary, but thankfully dinner was right around the corner and I could wait for this:

Snap Peas, Tofu With Mustard, Sweet Potato, Carrot Soup

Snap Peas, Tofu With Mustard, Sweet Potato, Carrot Ginger Soup

I wish I could say this was as good as it should have been but it never all clicked. The snap peas were at least not overcooked and had some snap. The sweet potatoes were good(duh!) but I’m actually developing a taste for them microwaved. The tofu was… tofu. But a little TJ mustard(yes, I packed my own mustard) perked it up. i didn’t even finish the soup; it seemed promising with carrot, ginger, and honey, but it never all clicked.

When I got back to my dorm, simply doing internet stuff took almost 2 hours. My computer was running sooo slow. I had to grab this while I was waiting for an update:

Zevia Cola

Zevia Cola

I didn’t quite realize why I was craving it for a while, until I noticed 45mg caffeine on the ingredient list. That couldn’t be too much, right? Well it’s the amount in a light roast regular cup of coffee. Yikes. My remedy for this was to gulp it, of course, because then the caffeine would enter my system early. Wtf? Bad judgement call here. We live and we learn–ain’t that the truth. I also watched Modern Family and Survivor. How hilarious was this weeks Modern Family? Not many shows make me laugh like that one did. I am definitely going to need to illegally download buy this season when it comes out. Speaking of Miss Mighty Maple Addict

Pumpkin Oats With Butter Toffee Peanut Butter And A Vegan Pumpkin Molasses Cookie

Pumpkin Oats With Butter Toffee Peanut Butter And A Vegan Pumpkin Molasses Cookie

You know I could never stop reading that blog and am full of hot air; I’d miss out on killerness like this. It’s such a smooth and sweet texture play, it’s ridiculous! I’m almost out of my favorite oatbran(toasted Trader Joe’s) so this was straight up steel cut. Normally, I’m not a fan because of the coarseness, but the pumpkin softened that. Grey’s Anatomy was… interesting? last night. I liked that they switch up the format of the show to make it different; but I don’t know that that way really worked. I’ll be watching The Office and 30 Rock over the weekend at some point to make up. I also might have snuck one of these into bed with me:

Cinnamon Raisin Roll With Creamy Vanilla Frosting And Vanilla Sugar

Cinnamon Raisin Roll With Creamy Vanilla Frosting And Vanilla Sugar

Holy Hannah was that good; now I understand why I consider these an “essential”. For the frosting I did 1 tablespoon cream cheese, 1 tablespoon plain 2% Voskos, and a little NuNaturals vanilla stevia. I wasn’t sure if cream cheese and yogurt together would work, but that was a big fat yes. It was smooth and creamy and held it’s¬†consistency¬†but was still soft; could you ask for something more?

One of the things I think is best for tests is sleep so I went to bed a little earlier than normal and got a real good nights sleep. My right foot did not feel up to par this morning, but I wanted to run anyway. Why am I so stubborn? I think it’s a familial trait. I waddled through 10 miles in 85:14. All that time gave me time to think and realize the reason I was sore was because I completely forgot to stretch anything yesterday–lesson learnt. I had a muffin planned for breakfast, but banana on the brains caused me to come up with this:

Banana Oats With Banana Peanut Butter And Smart Balance Peanut Butter, Strawberry Coconut Milk Kefir

Banana Oats With Banana Peanut Butter And Smart Balance Peanut Butter, Strawberry Coconut Milk Kefir

I love how creamy properly mushed banana makes oatmeal; it’s a great substitution for when pumpkin isn’t the right flavor. And the banana peanut butter is definitely growing on me, in case you can’t tell. That was just one big banana nut mess! But do¬†you notice anything missing from my breakfast this morning? Whole Grains? No. Probiotics? Nope. Nut Butter? Big nope. Animal products–yes! I’ve decided that, in honor of Lightlife and Tempehtations, I’m going to take it upon myself to eat vegan for today. I actually had this planned for Wednesday but that all changed when I got invited to the dinner(there was no vegan dishes there so it would have been a huge fail). I’m very excited to try this out; it’s not something I’ll pick up¬†permanently¬†but I feel like it will be a fun adventure–wish me luck!

P.S. Nature’s path giveaway! They have great vegan and gluten free cereals and granolas so be sure to enter this one.

How The Time Flies

Posted on October 21, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

As it turns out, when you’re really behind, an 80 minute class being cancelled isn’t as much a savior as you’d think. Like I mentioned, I crawled back into bed yesterday morning and did plenty I’d been neglecting around the room

  • Watch Amazing Race
  • Read blogs
  • Dust coffee grinds and salt off desk
  • Take out the trash
  • Clean plates and silverware

It felt like so much more at the time; how depressing. I got word(aka, I used the internet) of a special dish in one of the dining halls across campus, so I walked over and it was better than I could have hoped for:

Pumpkin Apple Soup With Flax, Toast With Mighty Maple, Fakin' Bacon

Pumpkin Apple Soup With Flax, Toast With Mighty Maple, Fakin' Bacon

The menu said there’d be squash apple soup. Well they ran out of squash so instead it was pumpkin! I added a bit of flax from my fridge and the tempeh bacon and peanut butter of course. Let’s ignore the fact that this is essentially my breakfast everyday and just focus on how the maple/salty/pumpkin all went together so well. I really hope that wasn’t an oil heavy soup because I ate a lot of it. While I was out I also picked up some mail and got something really exciting:

Lightlife Mail

Lightlife Mail

After discovering their new line of Tempehtation products, I got in touch with Lightlife. You know me; I’m by no means a vegan(more on that later), but I love trying out new cuisines and was so impressed by what they offered. They sent me coupons to pick out and review some of their products. Naturally I was overjoyed and went out on a special Whole Foods trip right after Days and Rachael Ray.

It was incredible in New England yesterday; the weather actually warmed up and the clouds cleared. I walked and read some Ancient Greek odes to Demeter and Aphrodite(because doesn’t everyone do this on their way to Whole Foods?) and was there before I knew it. I must have been fast in the store, because the whole trip(1.15 miles there and then back) took only 80 minutes. On the way back I had a snack:

Clif Chocolate Peanut Mojo Dipped

Clif Chocolate Peanut Mojo Dipped

This was another one of the flavors Clif sent my way that I could not say no to; the name itself had so much promise. Well, it was decent, and the salty/sweet was most definitely there. But it definitely didn’t win me over. My full review of it is here. I’m hoping after this one the rest will exceed my expectations like the PB&J flavor did. When I got back to my dorm, this is what I had to show for the adventure:

Grocery Loot

Grocery Loot

Did you know there’s now a 365 brand of pumpkin that’s cheaper than Libby’s? I’m giving it a chance even though I swear by my dealer, Libby, in hopes that it’s good. I went with the Ginger Teryaki Tempehtation dinner for my first tasting because it sounded amazing. I also picked up some soy yogurt for reasons that will become clear tomorrow and some teryaki salmon from the salad bar for dinner(only 1.86 for a salmon meal! score!). I worked a bit more until 5, at which point I realized I was hunnnnngrry. I would have made oats but my roommate was napping and those can get extensive and loud with me. Instead I tried a different in a jar:

Yogurt In A Jam Jar, Vitabrownie

Yogurt In A Jam Jar, Vitabrownie

If you can do oats in a nut butter jar, you can definitely do yogurt in a jam jar. My favorite banana pineapple rum jam was on its last leg, so I helped it along by adding 8oz Stonyfield plain yogurt. Yum! I think there was more in the jar than I realized there was, but that only made it that much better. It tasted just like a pineapple Chobani because the yogurt had a little fat in it. The brownie I threw in for a bit of fiber. It definitely held me over until I planned on meeting up with people(and an unpictured coffee from Blue State definitely didn’t hurt). I already had my main protein picked out(the salmon) but some veggies were definitely lacking from my day:

Teryaki Salmon, Roasted Cauliflower With Lemon Tahini, Baked Sweet Potato

Teryaki Salmon, Roasted Cauliflower With Lemon Tahini, Baked Sweet Potato

Let me tell you one thing: that salmon was salty. Now, I didn’t even do much to it, so if I’m saying that you know it must have been heavily doused. Don’t get me wrong; it was still damn good. But even so it could have used a tad less. I grabbed a tiny whole sweet potato instead of a 1/2 a big one; I love the skin part and this maximized the amount I got(not to mention the inside wasn’t burnt). The cauliflower and tahini combo I was not a fan of. It tasted very heavy and almost like parmesan even though I’m¬†positive¬†there wasn’t any cheese in that dish. Is this how tahini should be? It didn’t impress me, though I suppose if I were a vegan and ever missed the taste of cheese I could turn to tahini.

Maybe it was a denser meal than I realized, because hunger didn’t come until deep into The Biggest Loser. The blue team made a smart call by sending the black team home even if it was a tough one to make. Normally seeing other people lose weight makes me want food; I guess I was too deep into¬†Herodotus¬†to notice them. School was definitely getting me a bit stressed. What’s good eats when you got stress? CHOCOLATE:

Dark Chocolate Attune

Dark Chocolate Attune

Oh, and having that chocolate be probiotic definitely doesn’t hurt. This was another Attune product I reviewed here and oh my God was this good! It was just like any other premium dark chocolate bar, but had 30% my DV of calcium and 3g of fiber and 6.1 million little critters in it that’s going to keep me running regular before I go running. Amazing. At 10:30 I had a major dilemma. I’d like to be lying in bed in the dark at that time, but I really wanted oatmeal. Like my breakfast, oatmeal won out.

Oatmeal With Chocolate Chips And Smart Balance

Oatmeal With Chocolate Chips And Smart Balance

I took a pretty before picture, but I decided to retake it to show how I actually eat my oats in all its salty, messy glory. I downed this in 20 minutes and still managed to sleep by a reasonable time.

When I woke up, I decided I wanted to do 10 on the treadmill this morning; it completely didn’t occur to me how nice it was outside until I ran the first 3 or so, during which time I was snacking on this:

Chocolate Brownie Z-Bar

Chocolate Brownie Z-Bar

Flash is not my friend but it’s dark at 7am. The gym was virtually empty; I think there were 6 other people throughout my entire time there, 1 of which being my “gym-friend”. She said “have a good day” and I said “take care”. I’m a stud muffin. I ran 10 miles in 83:11 and my feet were really feeling it towards the end but I’m glad I stuck it out. Speaking of muffins, this was a berry good breakfast:

Blueberry Raspberry Oat Bran Muffin With Almond Butter, Strawberry Coconut Milk Kefir

Blueberry Raspberry Oat Bran Muffin With Almond Butter, Strawberry Coconut Milk Kefir

I hope you’re picking up all these puns I’m putting down. I loved the berry/almond/vanilla combo of it all. This kefir is seriously good stuff. I don’t even know how jazzed I am to try other brands than this one, because it’s so perfectly thick and sweet without overdoing it. FYI, don’t be surprised at all if you see the exact same breakfast tomorrow.

I had a very “fun” surprise in store for today which I think we all would have gotten a kick out of. Amazingly, however, I won a contest to attend an amazing sounding dinner in Boston which I am much much more excited about. I don’t know exactly how getting there and all is going to work out just yet, but it’d take a lot to keep me from good food like this. Instead, I’ll save the other thing for tomorrow and take plenty of pictures tonight for you all.

School On A Saturday

Posted on October 18, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Ask and ye shall¬†receive. Ok, no one really “asked” for it, but here is the review for the¬†Nature’s Path Multigrain Raisin Spice Oatmeal I had at yesterday’s breakfast.

I didn’t actually attend school on Saturday. But, as it happens, this was the first Saturday I actually stayed at college. Why is this? I have no idea. It seems like every week thus far I’ve been pulled back home for one reason or another. But this weekend there wasn’t as much a reason and I really needed to stay in one place where I could get work done. Running late yesterday literally had me figuratively running late, too. So by the time I finished my post, it was already lunch. Crazy! But more eating? Yeah, I think I’ll partake:

Broccoli, Summer Squash, BBQ Tempeh, Coffee

Broccoli, Summer Squash, BBQ Tempeh, Coffee

First I stopped to get Blue State coffee because it was cold and I didn’t think my napping roommate wanted to hear my coffee machine, then I swung by The Ratty to get food and headed back to my dorm. The BBQ tempeh was interesting. I loved all the flavors, but they didn’t really come together or say “BBQ” to me. Really any chance at tempeh, though, and I’ll bite. I got what tasted like full anise or fennel cloves in some points which was really weird. This didn’t really fill me up, but I also wasn’t very hungry so I didn’t eat anything for a while. As it turned out yesterday was a day when I couldn’t really trust my hunger.

I did some good translating in the afternoon(if that’s ever good), until my parents showed up. It’s parents weekend here at Brown where theoretically all the parents fly in having not seen their children for 2 months and attend all these speeches and what not. That’s not really how we did it, though. First my parents brought me food:

Voskos Yogurts

Voskos Yogurts

English Muffins, Cinnamon Roll, Vitatop, Ginger Cookies

English Muffins, Cinnamon Roll, Vitatop, Ginger Cookies

Back at home I got a great package from the people at Voskos Yogurt and my parents brought me 1/2 of it to sample and review. I never knew what an extensive line Voskos has, covering flavor, fat content, and organic/non-organic status. Thanks, Voskos, I can’t wait to see how your protein-packed yogurt compares! I also restocked on plenty of bready things because you can never have too many of those, in my opinion. We went out to the book store to grab a cable for my printer; while we were there my mom found a jacket she “had to have”.

Brown Mom Jacket

Brown Mom Jacket

It actually says “Brown Mom” on the chest. How ridiculous. We decided to take a trip to Stop And Shop, which I’d never been to around here because it’s a bit further and in a not-so-great part of town. On the way I snacked:

Chocolate Brownie Z-Bar

Chocolate Brownie Z-Bar

It turned out to be a lot cheaper than most Stop And Shops I’d been too, but there was nothing I really needed or wanted. After that we head to Whole Foods where I definitely took advantage of getting free groceries:

Groceries

Groceries

I picked up first some of my favorite muffins. I also got Strawberry Coconut Milk Kefir and Mint Chip Sweet Scoop Frozen Yogurt, both of which were on sale. I needed some more grain sweetened Sunspire dark chocolate chips–love these. And lastly, salmon for dinner which was dirt cheap because it was from the salad bar! Such a¬†savvy¬†shopper I am(not really but in this one instance yes :-)). When we got back, we did a bit of exchanging of dirty laundry(literally) and my parents were off. I promptly scooped myself some of this:

Mint Chip Sweet Scoops Frozen Yogurt

Mint Chip Sweet Scoops Frozen Yogurt

This bowl was delicious but unfortunate; the frozen yogurt had melted so fast it was practically soup by the time I was eating it and that is not cool with me and my yogurt. I would have thrown it in the freezer and waited, but I wasn’t feeling patient. It still had great flavor but was sipped up in 5 minutes flat along with a medium coffee. I then had myself wondering why I was still hungry and why I had to pee like a race horse. Really? Could I not figure the latter out from the coffee and frozen yogurt? I also tallied it up and realized I’d eaten around 1200 calories by this point in the day. P-thetic. Like I mentioned, it wasn’t an appetite trusting day. I promptly headed over to the dining hall for some fresh veggies and then back to my dorm to make up a supper:

Salmon, Sweet Potato With Maple Syrup, Broccoli, Zevia Twist

Salmon, Sweet Potato With Maple Syrup, Broccoli, Zevia Twist

Would the world still revolve if I didn’t eat as much broccoli as I do? I really doubt it. Actually the broccoli was the only thing from the dining hall; the sweet potato I bought from the Farmers’ Market a few weeks back. I was feeling a little sweet so I added maple syrup and it was out of this world. Maybe not for dinner, but I could see me doing that a lot more for dessert or breakfast. The salmon was also really good, even though I overdid it a bit on the sea salt(I didn’t even think this would be possible). And I like, though don’t love, the Twist Zevia. It’s more like 7-Up than Sprite if you know the difference. Still good but the Root Beer tops it for me.

My choice of subjects in school has gotten me a little unreluctant to work lately; my Greek History professor told our class we as a civilization have so few advancements to make as compared to the Ancients and that all we can do is study about them to feel any worth in our lives. Thanks. That really makes me want to study for your course(or, in this case, right a paper for your wife’s class). Thankfully, I don’t buy that shit at all. Nevertheless, I pumped out a solid, edited 2 pages on Catullan poetry before breaking out into study snack:

Voskos Blended Greek Honey Yogurt

Voskos Blended Greek Honey Yogurt

I wanted to calcium-up my daily so I tried one of the new yogurts I was sent to sample. How do you say yum in Greek?!(Seriously, though, I probably should learn stuff like this for class) This was amazing and you can read my full review here. I gave it a solid 9/10 for its amazing flavor. I only wish the container wasn’t so tall so I could have licked the bottom. I wrote some more essay. More studyage = more snackage in my book:

Pumpkin Oats With Butter Toffee Peanut Butter And Grain Sweetened Chocolate Chips

Pumpkin Oats With Butter Toffee Peanut Butter And Grain Sweetened Chocolate Chips

I was super excited to open up a brand spanking new 32oz can of Libby’s for this; I’m sure you can share in my excitement for that. I love the Naturally Nutty Butter Toffee peanut butter for its sweetness. I also really dig these chocolate chips; instead of sugar, they’re sweetened with ground corn and barley. They’re slightly less sweet and more like dark chocolate that way–yum! I couldn’t quite end my night without a little bit of bread and spread action:

English Muffin With Chocolate Sunflower Butter And Banana Rum Pineapple Jam

English Muffin With Chocolate Sunflower Butter And Banana Rum Pineapple Jam

Ugh, this habit is not so fun for the digestion, but a part for my mouth. And since both of these have been put into the new Product Review format, I can proudly do this and this. I’m continually working on that behind the scenes for everything else.

Again, on the weekends the gyms open up late around here so I slept in until 8:30. I was there basically when the door auto-unlocked and running by 9:01. I had plans to go home this morning so I decided to do something different. Today I ran for 7 miles, and I put the speed higher than I’m comfortable at at 7.7mph. I thought I’d turn it down after a little while but I kept it up the entire way and finished in 54:38. Wow was it tiring though. I was happy to get back and have a breakfast made by a reasonable time:

Blueberry Raspberry Oat Bran Muffin With Cream Cheese, Strawberry Coconut Milk Kefir

Blueberry Raspberry Oat Bran Muffin With Cream Cheese, Strawberry Coconut Milk Kefir

I needed a Tuesday/Thursday breakfast–i.e. something I can take on the go. I decided to give my new kefir a try. Since I like milk more at room temp, I actually poored it out when I woke up to let it sit a while. You can’t microwave kefir without destroying the probiotics so this was as good as I could get it. At first I thought it was a little watery, but I’m remembering that’s an impression most coconut milk products give me. Besides that, it has a nice, not-to-sweet flavor and strawberry puree as its second ingredient. I also had one of my favorite muffins, slathered in cream cheese because there’s no other way. It got a little crumbly in the micro but thankfully cream cheese is an adherent, too. Now I’m sure my dad will be here any moment so I best shut the computer down and get a move on it.

Time Crunch

Posted on October 17, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Thank God there’s so little expectation to get anything done on Friday because I certainly didn’t(anything productive, that is. Plenty foodie). Yesterday morning I was in a bit of a downer mood after my not-so-splendid 10 mile run. After I thought about it, I realized how great it was that I’ve come to the point where I can run 10 miles and became thankful for that, forgetting the rest. 1 bad day can never spoil the week. It also might of helped my mood when shy, slightly uptight girl who sharpened a pencil with her knife(remember her?) felt extremely uncomfortable translating a poem with the words “sex session” in it. After everything that was translated in that class, she could have gotten much worse. I didn’t think anything would top the vitatop with chocolate sunflower butter I had for breakfast, but the lunch room certainly did a good job trying:

Portabella Mushrooms In Sauce, Vegan Chana Masala, Broccoli

Portabella Mushrooms In Sauce, Vegan Chana Masala, Broccoli

I’m not sure I know what Chana Masala is other than magical and Indian. Best yet, I know if the lunch rooms version is this good, the authentic stuff must be amazing. I’ll have to track that down. The mushrooms were meant to be stuffed in a hoagie bun but I liked them straight up with a fork(plus, the buns in our lunch room, despite being whole wheat, have partially hydrogenated oils in them. No thank you). I love a nicely cooked mushroom for all its earthiness and thought this was excellent, although the dried herbs were a little tough to get between the teeth. Between Greek History and Epic Poetry I checked my mailbox and was excited to find these!

Mail

Mail

The tiny package was some samples of Barney Butter. I see that brand all the time on Carrots N’ Cake and I can’t wait to try it out. The other was a letter from my Aunt Leslie who I saw over the weekend. It was a thank you card and picture from the birthday party and she even slipped a little present in to buy “yummy food” with. Oh, I will ūüôā At Epic Poetry we got the essays from last Friday back. I didn’t even look at it all through class and later until 5. Frankly, the grade didn’t matter to me when I realized I think I’m the only Freshman in that class and I haven’t taken a formal English course since 11th grade. It’s a class I’m taking because I want to, not because I need to, and the important thing is enjoying it. I actually did better than I expected: a B. That’s somewhat what I was used to in High School English class, which was always my weakest area. I think she went a little lenient on me because she knows I’m¬†under prepared¬†compared to the rest of the class.

When I got back to my dorm, I had an itch to go see the weekend sales at Whole Foods. It was a bit of a cold walk but thankfully not raining? Looking on the bright side here. I perused Whole Foods and Eastside Market. Seeing swordfish on sale is like a knife in my heart with no way to cook it; I should man up, buy a pan, and make use of the communal kitchen in my basement. What I did end up getting was just as good, though:

Grocery Loot

Grocery Loot

The Oikos and Attune were from Whole Foods; I found the dark chocolate flavor! Can’t wait to give that one a taste and review. Vitabrownies were “on sale” at Eastside Market(though not for cheaper than I could get them at home) and I had such a hankering for them recently I needed to grab them. I also got a jar of my favorite Banana Pineapple Rum Jam. At 7.19 a jar, it’s definitely a luxury. I decided to forgo getting a cupcake for Cookie Friday and just be content with the money I spent. I did get my cookie on in another way, though:

Oatmeal With Cookie Dough Peanut Butter

Oatmeal With Cookie Dough Peanut Butter

Close enough, right? I spent way too much time walking around, so I didn’t get to eat this until around 5, at which time I had a ton of online reading and reviewing to get done(did you catch my seed butter reviews?). What happened here? Like I said, thankfully there’s no expectations for the first day of the weekend in my book. I was honestly not feeling up to eating at the dining hall; they didn’t have anything I wanted, it was freezing out, and I was still feeling overwhelmed. Instead I decided to make a mess of what I have:

Vegetable Mess And Maccaroni Mess

Vegetable Mess And Maccaroni Mess

I’m not nearly as talented with yogurt messes as some other bloggers, but I think I make up for that with these. The vegetable mess was with a medley of peppers, zuchinni, broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots, plus a sliced sweet potato. The¬†macaroni was Trader Joe’s instant microwave mac n’ cheese with 1/2 can tuna and 1 1/2 strips tempeh bacon. Basically, it was one big salty delicious mess, especially with added sea salt. I caught up to The Office and 30 Rock. I love that that show’s back. Bring it on, Liz Lemon. I hope Pam and Jim get back soon, though. She needs to have that baby!

Ghost Whisperer was touching, as usual. I love it when that show doesn’t try anything fancy but just goes with its regular formula. I might or might not have had this dessert planned since Wednesday:

Caramel Walnut Vitabrownie And Narrangasett Creamery Kefir

Caramel Walnut Vitabrownie And Narrangasett Creamery Kefir

I never did the brownies and milk thing as a kid, but this is definitely my style. I took a regular vitabrownie and added caramel sauce after microwaving it. I couldn’t microwave the kefir without killing the probiotics, so instead I let it sit at room temperature for the afternoon which got it warm enough. Yum! That’s my milk and brownies for ya. I’m still on the look out for a good store bought kefir. I love the tang to it and want to find one like that. Something tells me the Farmers’ Market one is whole milk and it’s a little heavy for a nutritious drink. In fact, it was so heavy I didn’t bother with the last 1/3 of the glass; that was more than enough for me. With my sample of Barney Butter, I needed to give the oats I drool over on Carrots N Cake a try:

Banana Oats With Barney Butter

Banana Oats With Barney Butter

For this I whipped half a banana until the fiber was practically gone, cooked the oatmeal in that like usual, and topped with Barney Butter. I was so impressed how thick 1/2 a banana made the oats! I’m not a huge banana fan, but if I was it really would have given pumpkin a run for its money(watch out, Libby). I loved how much of a¬†melting¬†butter Barney Butter was, but I’m not sure I got a good sense of the flavor. My first impression was a little bland, which was unexpected for a nut butter with sugar and sea salt. I added a ton more sea salt and enjoyed the bowl that way; I’ll have to give it a second taste before reviewing. I also figured I’d end the day the way I started it for good measure:

Bread With Chocolate Sunflower Butter

Bread With Chocolate Sunflower Butter

I say “bread” and not “toast” because I was too impatient to eat the sunflower butter to make toast; what can I say? It’s good and I’m lazy. I forgot I’m not the only member of the blogosphere who loves Vermont Co. Bread; it’s one of pbandjenny’s favorites. We have good taste ūüėČ

This morning I got to sleep in until 8:30 since the gym won’t open until 9. I actually got such a good nights sleep that it was hard to sleep in. Can you imagine that? Oh what a hard life I live… I was the first one in, obviously, and got some good running in to the tune of Saturday morning cartoons(much funner than CNN in my opinion). I broke the machine again. Broke as in it wouldn’t go as fast as it said it was after a while, so I jumped ship and moved to another. Overally I did 8 miles at a challenging pace and finished in 64:33.

Nature's Path Organic Multigrain Raisin N' Spice Oatmeal With Cinnamon Raisin PB, Peanut Butter Oikos With Dark Chocolate Chips

Nature's Path Organic Multigrain Raisin N' Spice Oatmeal With Cinnamon Raisin PB, Peanut Butter Oikos With Dark Chocolate Chips

When I got back and showered I didn’t sit down to breakfast until 10:40! Well now I just feel lazy. For a quick breakfast I went for quick oats–quick cooking that is. I tried out one of the new oatmeals Nature’s Path Organic sent me. I’ll be sure to start my next post with a review, ya know, once I actually get a chance to eat it and all ūüėČ And of course some Oikos with peanut flour was welcomed to the table. My Oikos didn’t have a code under the lid ūüė¶ Does anyone know if it’s because it just wasn’t new enough a container or are they only under Stonyfields lids?

Chobani giveaway over at Hop Skip Leap. Another yogurt always welcome to the table.

And a vitatop giveaway! How lucky could the winner of this one get?

Stick To The List

Posted on October 14, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Good morning. First off, I was very excited when Krystal from The Special K Treatment asked me to do a guest post a little while ago and now it’s up! Be sure to check out her fun and funky blog.

Yesterday morning my shorter run and hungry, hungry, hippo breakfast had me done awfully early. Usually I’m rushing out the door at 10:52 to get to class, but I had plenty of time. So much time I managed to squeeze a trip to the library(yuck) and grab a cup of coffee(yum) and still made it in before the teacher. After class I was excited because it’s that special time when the Farmers’ Market magically appears on my front lawn. I went straight to the creamery station and they had it!

Kefir From Narragansett Creamery

Kefir From Narragansett Creamery

How exciting. I was a bit disappointed when they forgot it last week. Unfortunately, they didn’t have fun and funky flavors like maple raspberry, but I took a leap of faith at guessing their plain was just as good. At $2 a bottle, it’s a bit of a splurge, but how often do you find homemade kefir? For some reason, I was not hungry during my usual lunch hour, so I just packed my lunch in all to-go containers:

Kale And Linguica Soup, Carrots And Broccoli In Mustard, Pineapple Chobani With Pumpkin Flax Granola

Kale And Linguica Soup, Carrots And Broccoli In Mustard, Pineapple Chobani With Pumpkin Flax Granola

This seemed like a smart idea. But by the time I got to history, I felt weird with 3 containers and a binder on my desk, so I wolfed down the veggies and soup and my bottle of water. After realizing I had sufficiently bloated myself with more water than I need in a day, I had to stop and recompose(I’m not really kidding here; I didn’t have another sip of water until 6:30 with dinner!). Thankfully, that meant I wasn’t hungry at all for my yogurt and I could sit back and enjoy it. The Pumpkin Flax Granola was sitting in there for 2 hours by the time I ate it and it still had crunch–now that’s one hell of a granola. At the end of my Epic Poetry class, I made a list and headed straight to Whole Foods since my dorm was the opposite direction.

Shopping List

Shopping List

Half of the list has question marks, meaning I wanted them but knew I shouldn’t buy them, and the bottom says “You have a lot of food. Only buy what’s necessary/you need to eat the other food. No granola or bars.” I leave myself the best messages; but if I didn’t “remind” myself of that, I’d totally go nuts in the store. On the way I had to make a pit stop at Staples to send out a fax, and headed to F.Y.E. here they didn’t have the particular video game I wanted. Shame because it’s suppose to rain for 3 days and I don’t see myself leaving the dorm much. When I was in Whole Foods, I did a pretty good job of sticking to the list. The sales this week weren’t as appealing as usual, anyway. Although they did have those amazing cinnamon rolls by Zen Bakery that I didn’t stand near for long. I got back to my dorm at 4:20 with these:

Cream Cheese And Attune Bars

Cream Cheese And Attune Bars

I picked up some Attune bars with the coupons I was sent to review them, and 2 tubs of cream cheese. As you must realize, I go through cream cheese a lot ūüôā But wait, they are regularly 2.69 each, on sale for 2/$4, and there’s a coupon in the new Whole Deal for $1 off 2 Organic Valley products. All in all, I got both for $3 total, which made them cheaper than the non-organic store brand! My mom raised me well in that respect ūüôā

Pumpkin Oats With Grain Sweetened Dark Chocolate Chips And SB PB

Pumpkin Oats With Grain Sweetened Dark Chocolate Chips And SB PB

I didn’t want something sweet, so this bowl was pretty perfect as an afternoon snack. The dark chocolate chips have a much more mellow flavor and the salt really gives your taste buds a kick. The fire alarm went off, but I didn’t budge at all. Is it just me, or do school fire alarm tests in Elementary School completely desensitize you to fire alarms later in life? Plus, Taylor Swift was on Oprah and she’s kind of my celebrity crush. I got plenty of work done. Oh wait, that’s a lie. That’s what I meant to do. Curse you, internet(jk, I love you and don’t ever leave me). Well I may not have gotten work done but I did get dinner.

Baked Sweet Potato, Garden Style Scrod, Veggetable Medley

Baked Sweet Potato, Garden Style Scrod, Vegetable Medley

Yikes. Sorry for the photo quality. In The Ratty I try to have my camera out as little as possible so as not to¬†embarrass¬†the non-foodies I eat with; those crazy people need to learn to love their food more ūüôā I was so happy to see fish on tonights menu(yes, that’s what’s under the tomato stuff). I scraped off the toping and whatever was underneath to just get a taste of the salty, salty scrod. I had to go into the vegetarian line to find the sweet potatoes, because apparently people in the meat line aren’t the same who want potatoes. And there was a vegetable medley I just couldn’t, but probably should’ve, said no to. How is it that some of those veggies come out cooked the right amount and the ones right next to it are mushy as a rotten banana? What a mystery. After my friend went to some lecture to not write his essay *tsk* *tsk* I went back to my dorm to write mine like a good student… and instead watched TV shows online. The internet is a slippery slope. For dessert course 1 I tried my new probiotic friend:

Attune Milk Chocolate Crisp

Attune Milk Chocolate Crisp

With coffee, of course, because that’s how chocolate is best. This was my first tasting of the Attune line, a Chocolate Crisp bar. Umm, yum! This has probiotics, fiber, and calcium? You had me at chocolate. I really liked this for its smooth flavor and you can see my full review by clicking on that link. Like I said, getting all my Product Reviews into that format is going to take a little bit of time. But I hope to get it done within a month because of how clean and¬†efficient¬†it is for myself and you all. That chocolate definitely got me into a mocha mood:

Cinnamon Raisin Toast With Mocha Peanut Butter, Milk Mocha Chocolate

Cinnamon Raisin Toast With Mocha Peanut Butter, Milk Mocha Chocolate

After this I have 4 slices of toast left. Is this really my dorm? What happened to when I had about 3 loaves? Also, it’s very tricky to stop at 1 of those Newman’s Own Organic chocolates. My best advice is break off a piece, toss the rest out your window, and run to a bomb shelter to avoid scarfing it all down, because it’s that crazy good. While I was translating, there was either a) a pep rally or b) a drunken frat party occurring outside. Really, they sound the same when you get right down to it. My roommate came back around this time and started “doing work” which really annoyed me. After finishing some work and ignoring the noise I think I made the best dessert ever:

Vegan Cinnamon Raisin Roll With Vanilla Bean Cream Cheese Frosting

Vegan Cinnamon Raisin Roll With Vanilla Bean Cream Cheese Frosting

My fellow Peanut Butter lover, Jenny, is having dessert as her “Best Of…” theme this week. How awesome is that? I needed to get in on the action. I took a Zen Bakery cinnamon roll and topped it with low fat cream cheese mixed with vanilla stevia, and topped with vanilla bean sugar. This was like The Odyssey: Epic(that’s funny if you’re me and going cuckoo reading that book ;-)). On a sadder note, my bready carb stash is diminishing rapidly. I’m going to need to get some reserves flown in and fast to survive the rest of the week.

I talked yesterday about the importance of shutting down your computer and lights a while before going to bed. Last night could not have been a better example; I had my computer off 45 minutes before I planned on sleeping, and my lights 35, and falling asleep couldn’t have been easier. Unfortunately, I had some weird dreams about secret agents and a killing maid and… well let’s just not go there. All in all it was much better than usual and I was ready to run when I woke up. It clearly was, like usual, a treadmill morning; it’s about mid 40’s here for the next half of the week! Ugh, let’s not think about that. I decided 8 miles at a challenging pace was a good workout and ended up doing it in 63:57. When I got back to my room I was a little dissapointed to find that I didn’t have the ingredients or time for the breakfast I thought about in my mind running, so I had to work on the fly:

2% Greek Yogurt With Cocoa Beach Granola And Caramel Sauce, Vanilla Chip Bar With Vanilla Peanut Butter

2% Greek Yogurt With Cocoa Beach Granola And Caramel Sauce, Vanilla Chip Bar With Vanilla Peanut Butter

Before you think I’ve gone completely berserk, there wasn’t actually any cream cheese in that container; I merely needed something portable to put the yogurt in. I love the Trader Joe’s 2% because it’s a little bit richer and holds up well. The caramel with chocolate granola was heavenly–definitely a dessert tip to keep in mind. And you know I’m running low on bread when I use a granola bar to put peanut butter on. I might have to break down and purchase some english muffins later so that doesn’t happen again. In fact, today I’m expecting my shipment of Naturally Nutty seed butters, so I definitely need something for some good spreading! Is it wrong to be so excited about getting butter in the mail? If so, I don’t want to be right.

Xagave anyone? Oh the things I could bake with that…

TGIM

Posted on September 28, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update, Rant, Recipe | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Sorry for the negative Nedness I’ve been putting forth lately. I promise it gets more cheerful at the part about this morning, so just skip ahead to the big muffin if you’d like. Overall, this was just one of those weekends where we hail the arrival of a fresh new week and wave goodbye to the weekend happily. They happen, but the important this is moving on and looking at things with a pleasant disposition. But let’s back up a bit. Yesterday I enjoyed my morning in and made a breakfast around 9:

Kashi Vanilla Oatmeal With Peanut Flour, Greek Yogurt With Figs And Vanilla Sugar

Kashi Vanilla Oatmeal With Peanut Flour, Greek Yogurt With Figs And Vanilla Sugar

The Greek yogurt with figs and vanilla sugar was clearly something off of Mount Olympus itself, and I should know since I’ve been trudging through the Iliad for the past 3 weeks. The creamy yogurt contrasted with nutty fig seeds and crispy sugar to be just perfect. The peanut flour in the instant oats was great and it come out as thick as pudding. It was missing one thing though:

Peanut Oatmeal With White Chocolate Wonderful

Peanut Oatmeal With White Chocolate Wonderful

White Chocolate Wonderful. Wonderful. I’m so glad I’ve gotten my dad(who admitted to being the culprit who reads this) to be an addict for that peanut butter and keep a jar in the pantry. I also decided that I’d keep up the baking while I had the opportunity. I made my Maple-Apple Morning Cookie recipe and tried altering it for oatmeal raisin. I swapped the maple syrup for NuNaturals baking blend, added 1/4 cup of water, swapped raisins for the apple, swapped the amounts of oatmeal and flour, and halved the ground flax.

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

The result was OK, but not spectacular like the originals; I could kind of taste the baking blend a bit too much, which wouldn’t had been an issue if it was more like brown sugar, but it’s not. We also went out for another Sunday morning treat:

McDonald's Decaf Coffee

McDonalds' Decaf Coffee

So good. But wait, it get’s better. That was free. Yep, McDonalds is having a promotion until Wednesday where any¬† hot coffee is free. And the fact that I couldn’t make my morning decaf and refused to drink the regular stuff my mom makes made this so much more sweet(well, that and all the stevia). Before I even got a chance to do some homework it was lunch already–kind of a problem since I had virtually neglected all homework on Saturday with the drama. My grandmother came over, we sat down, and had a nice Sunday lunch:

Sweet Potato With Cinnamon And Salt, Brussels And Carrots, Steak Tips, Twist Zevia

Sweet Potato With Cinnamon And Salt, Brussels And Carrots, Steak Tips, Twist Zevia

This meal had everything that should have put me in the right mood but just didn’t. The Zevia Twist flavor was really good and sweet, more like 7Up than Sprite. The sweet potato, despite being amazingly seasoned by moi with salt, cinnamon, and black pepper, wasn’t quite as spectacular as it should have been; it was even so big I had to cut a bit off to make room on my plate for anything else. The steak tips were the biggest disappointment. I like eating meat when it’s well prepared and a choice cut, but this was like most steak tips and too fatty for my taste. Unfortunately, there wasn’t really enough on the table for me to make a well balanced vegetarian meal so I ate my protein and tried being happy with it.

Well while I was in MA there was one thing I had to do before departing:

Trader Joe's

Trader Joe's

I believe there’s one in all of RI that’s no where near me so this was a must. I picked up some of my favorite cinnamon raisin english muffins, carrot ginger regular muffins, and turbinado sugar to fuel my recent sugar-over-yogurt kick. I’m excited to try turbinado, both because it’s less refined and I expect the molasses flavor to be perfect with pumpkin oats. Trader Joe’s has tons more I’d like to try, like their new black beluga instant lentils–yes, I said instant lentils. I kept the trip minimal though. We got back and loaded up the car, but not before I took a few more scoops of this:

Whole Soy & Co. Chocolate Hazelnut Frozen Yogurt

Whole Soy & Co. Chocolate Hazelnut Frozen Yogurt

Like I said, this IS nutella in frozen yogurt form, only with better nutrition. The second time around I think I totally liked this more because of a funny realization I had: this is fake milk ice cream btu it tastes just like the real stuff. I completely missed the first time that this was soy milk because it’s so creamy and doesn’t have a touch of aftertaste.

I won’t deny that lifted the mood of the weekend, but froyo alone is not enough for a man to enjoy life on. When we got onto campus it was a bit of an emotional silliness. My entire family including my grandmother carried things to my dorm room, a place where I didn’t even want them to come in the first place. I came into my room to find my roommate and his friend hanging out, watching youtube, and pretty much blowing the weekend off. Now my mind was really all over the place. The family who I didn’t want to come this close to my dorm I now wanted to have stay for as long as they could but didn’t want them to come into my room, which isn’t even “my” room because it’s shared with someone who I might be able to live with but don’t connect with at all. We said our goodbyes in the hall, and I don’t even know how sincere I came off because my mind was running 10 directions. When I got into the room I really just wanted to throw myself on the bed and bury my head in my pillow, but I didn’t even feel like I could do that with the people around. I calmly unpacked my groceries and laundry and made myself a snack:

Cinnamon Raisin English Muffin With Maple Almond Butter And Apple Butter, Oatmeal Raisin Cookie

Cinnamon Raisin English Muffin With Maple Almond Butter And Apple Butter, Oatmeal Raisin Cookie

Like I mentioned, the cookies didn’t come out slammin’ like I had hoped; this was when I found that out. I suppose it would be good as a topper on plain yogurt with a heaping amount of cinnamon to balance it out. Thankfully, melted almond butter has a way of making problems slide away(I know a lot of you know what I mean here).

After I caught up on emails/blogs, I wasn’t really sure what to do with myself. I didn’t want to stay and do homework because I was not in a people mood, so I went for the one thing I knew I did want: the caramel sauce I found at Dedham Whole Foods but put back. I decided it was an entirely necessary Fall item even if I was paying for it, and it was the perfect item for me because it came in a squeeze bottle and only had milk and sugar as its ingredients. Well, I went for a walk in the rain to my Whole Foods for it, and after going 1.2 miles I was extremely disappointed to find out they don’t carry it. They have a different brand with cream as its first ingredient in a glass jar, but that’s not the kind I’m looking for. It hit me that the Dedham Whole Foods might just be the only place I’d found that particular brand before, and now I wasn’t going to get it until the next time I go there, which won’t be for a good long while most likely.

Walking back in the rain was incredibly long and frustrating(not to mention wet because the Thomas family doesn’t believe in umbrellas). I was pretty much throwing myself my own pity party and not beaming a smile when I went into the cafe. I didn’t even bother eating there because I wanted to get into my dorm and put on my PJ’s despite the fact it was 6:40. That’s when I decided, if I just eat out of the plastic take out containers and don’t season my food, it’s only going to feel worse. If I take the time to make myself a decent meal I’m excited about, I might just turn my frown upside down. So that’s what I did.

Snobby Joes, Sweet Potato, Cooked Cabbage, Broccoli And Beets, Peas And Mushrooms

Snobby Joes, Sweet Potato, Cooked Cabbage, Broccoli And Beets, Peas And Mushrooms

One of the things in the Ratty was a “lentil stew”. It was completely under/not seasoned which actually worked for me; I mixed it with some mustard, ketchup, and steak sauce to make a sort of “snobby stew”. All the vegetables tasted like their vegetable self, but it was nice to have some cheery colors to look at.

The night indeed got a little better after that. My roommate FINALLY got himself out of the room for dinner and I was able to dissolve to some music, watch The Amazing Race, and make this:

Pumpkin Oats With Dark Chocolate Chips And Mighty Maple

Pumpkin Oats With Dark Chocolate Chips And Mighty Maple

The Amazing Race definitely isn’t my favorite reality show, but it has its moments and eats up time well. These oats were pretty decent, too; the dark chocolate chips are from Dedham Whole Foods and sweetened with grains rather than corn products, isn’t that cool? I really didn’t care what nut butter I had on it, I just wanted something melted and gooey. Half way through I realized it wasn’t enough, and I needed something a little flaxy in my life:

Adding A Spoonful Of Smart Balance

Adding A Spoonful Of Smart Balance

Much better. I don’t know why, but I think chocolate and Smart Balance go hand in hand. Maybe they really do in this case since both had grains in them, haha. To round out the night, I pretty much cut myself some slack and stopped doing homework once I did the bare minimum for today; it was a little thing but really helped to take pressure off my shoulder. I was in bed, watching TV, and ready to go to bed by 10:30. I’m sure my roommate thinks I’m nuts but I’m taking up a new attitude where, if I just want to go to bed that damn early and not do work or go out, so be it.

I was very excited to kick off a new week. unfortunately, the kick off happened about 25 minutes late because I slept through my alarm. I wasn’t sure what to do at that point, because I planned on doing a long run for that day. But then I thought why should anything change? So I hit the gym and did my long run on the treadmill–yes the treadmill. These are not optimal for long runs because a) it’s easy to get bored and b) they stop after 60 minutes, but I didn’t let any of that stop me. And even though I was listening to a playlist I made up in a bad mood, my mood was higher than ever thinking about finishing. I did 10 miles in 81:30 minutes and couldn’t have felt better by the end. Talk about a runner’s high, I was practically dancing back to my dorm, until I realized my roommate locked me out while he was taking a shower. Oi. After 10 minutes of standing in the hall, he FINALLY got back, I took what was perhaps the quickest shower of my life, and threw together a fast, portable breakfast:

Blueberry Bran Muffin With Cream Cheese And Honey Maple Protein Peanut Butter, Raspberry Maple Kefir

Blueberry Bran Muffin With Cream Cheese And Honey Maple Protein Peanut Butter, Raspberry Maple Kefir

Portable? Check. Nutricious? Check. Probiotic? Check. Delicious? Can I get a check check? When life makes it so that oats are a little inconvenient, I love a good healthy muffin to kick off the day. The Honey Maple peanut butter is made by a Providence company and has 14 grams of protein per serving! Not to mention it tastes very similar to Mighty Maple and Butter Toffee. The kefir was my first try at portable probiotics; I decided to just drink it straight up like I believe Ada mentioned. It was pretty decent. It definitely had the raspberry flavor, and was thick sort of like a milkshake. I was a little shocked at first by the tanginess I assume is lactic acid, but got used to that. I could definitely see myself trying more brands of kefir for the future.

I completely messed up my google reader, haven’t opened my mailbox(wait, I just did), and have class in less than 30 minutes. Needless to say, my running 10 miles has me running behind, but I’m not letting that put a damper on my Monday. So please excuse me while I dash off to work on all of that and here’s to a great week!
