Forgetful Me

I’ve been a bit absent minded lately; I’ve completely forgotten to mention two big things. First off, today’s my mom’s birthday! Happy birthday to her!(even though I don’t think she knows about this yet so shhh ;-)) There will be dessert later to celebrate. The other thing I almost forgot is we’re driving to NYC and back tomorrow to see our friends from Georgia. I’m so excited since I see them only twice a year, but that left me in a mad rush to prewrite some posts! Thankfully, I thought of two good subjects I hope will entertain you while I’m away 🙂

This morning I did not forget to get my probiotics in despite skipping yogurt at breakfast.

Pop Culture Probiotic Chocolate Chip Granola Bar

Pop Culture sent me their two flavor of granola bars to sample and review. Clearly, I’m not the only one on a probiotic mission because the makers of this product believe in the power of them so much that they developed a special formula for maintaining a strand in a shelf stable granola bar. Since I was having a chocolate tooth, I reached for this flavor. I review it here. I definitely liked it and it had great nutrition(and was deliciously chocolatey :-)). My only problem was the texture, which is usually a problem with bars that add soy protein.

I felt like all morning I was playing house picking things up around here. It might be nice that my parents leave coffee still in the pot when they leave for work if they didn’t drink caffeinated and know I don’t touch the stuff. Oh well, it’s the least I could do. Just like the least my dog could do was pee on the rug and the least my camera could do was die. On mornings like that you just have to take a deep breath and take it as it comes. Fortunately, that all could wait while I was making lunch for myself.

Roasted Broccoli, Buttered Apple, Sweet Apple Chicken Sausage

I got really into this meal, and it showed in the flavor. I know I wanted to use my last Al Fresco Sweet Apple sausage(so sad to see this flavor go 😦 but at least now I get to open a new one!). Along side I decided to roast broccoli, which came out beautifully. These were so nutty and crispy almost like broccoli fries! I also melted some butter spread in a pan and cooked up apples, topping them with a little more 😉 I’m totally not afraid of gaining the average 5 or 7 or however many pounds I will this Holiday season; I’ll just find it ironic if it’s from food that I could have been eating all year and not holiday cookies.

Well after all the pee was cleaned and the batteries were changed(lovely imagery, right?), I finally got time to play silly online computer games write up some posts for tomorrow. Any guesses what they might be? I already touched upon one in this post… My chocolate chip cookie tooth from this morning came back in a big way, so I thought to have it in the form of healthy fats.

Oatmeal With Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Peanut Butter And Advent Chocolate

How long has it been since I’ve cracked open my jar of chocolate chip cookie dough peanut butter? Too long. It’s almost gone meaning almost oats in a jar! That’ll be a good one. While eating this I was reminded of why our mailwoman rocks; she’s stopped putting anything in our box anymore when we get a package and instead drives all the way into our garage and leaves it there. Hehe, she must know I’m ever so lazy 🙂 Although today we got a package that was meant for another house so later we have to give it to its owner. Boo 😦

Like I’ve mentioned, it’s my mom’s birthday so there will be delicious goodies tonight for that. I’m wondering if I’m supposed to have picked a dinner and started up on that? I really haven’t been thinking about it. Oops. Best get to work on that!

Dinner Standing Up

I’m home and as you might imagine it is hectic! There’s so much stuff to move around it’s mind bogging. I’ve decided to quit for tonight and try again tomorrow.

Anyway, yesterday today(it’s been that long) I made a quick lunch before my final.

Sweet Apple Al Fresco Sausage, Sweet Potato, Broccoli With Caramel Mustard

I really love this flavor sausage, especially with a little extra maple syrup! I studied a bit more and then it was time for the test at 2. The first annoyance was how people kept making jokes for the first 10 minutes; the professor isn’t strict and the class if filled with seniors who at this point just want to graduate so it wasn’t distracting for anyone else and I just let it slide. I basically just wrote and wrote and after 90 minutes I felt I did enough. It felt so good to get out! And even though I understudied for this one, I still feel like I rocked it–go figure. I needed a snack after that work out.

Peanut Butter Chip Granols Bar

Yum! See all those peanut butter chips? Yeah, but we can still say it’s “healthy” because it’s called a granola bar. I decided to go check my mailbox one last time. Honestly, I had no expectations, so imagine my surprise when I found some lovin’!

Kettle Cashew Butter And Extra Rich Milk Chocolate

My extremely awesome secret santa got me these goodies! I noticed Kristie was a new commentor a few weeks ago, through which I found and followed her awesome blog. She really nailed me with these presents! A cashew butter they don’t sell anywhere in MA and a milk chocolate bar I’ve never had. Thank you sooo much. I can’t wait to try both of these!(I love that I got a vegan to buy me milk chocolate, too. That just seems so ironic and funny :-)) I grabbed a celabratory drink for finishing finals.

Chamomile Tea

No, not that kind of drink. Tea! I wasn’t sure how this would be but I believe the cashier girl said “Chamomile is really yummy”. How could I say no to that? Afterwards my dad was at my dorm and we started packing up everything(read: I packed and he moved it to the car). I should have snapped a photo of when he lifted my box of nut butters–priceless. When we were finished, the room looked like how I got it.

Empty Room

Isn’t that depressing? What’s more depressing is knowing I have to refill it in 5 weeks… let’s not think about it. All that moving made me starving! I realized it was 5:30 and all I’d had since lunch was a not-so-healthy bar. I needed food. So we stopped at Whole Foods.

General Tso's Chicken And Broccoli

At first I just grabbed the chicken. Then I thought “I should have some healthy vegetables”. Apparently the roasted broccoli would have been too healthy because the tso one was just right. This tasted just how I was hoping it would: guilty. Sometimes there isn’t anything better than fatty vegetarian fed chicken. Although, in all seriousness, I would like to get more fat and protein into my snacks, except I don’t know how to do that without reaching for “meal food” like chicken. Ideas? We stopped at Market Basket to stock up on veggies and fruits, and then started unpacking as soon as we got home at 7. Needless to say, there wasn’t much motivation to make vegetables for a “dinner” while we were running around putting things away, so I kept it simple.

Ok, there wasn’t much “simple” in the making of this muffin, but oh my god was it good! It tasted so nice and fresh with whole slices of diced apple. And the cinnamon in this was perfect. Even the top had a crispy coating to it–heaven! And I love how Gluten Free Life uses whole grain sorghum flour so it was a healthy dinner, too. Of course, even healthy muffins don’t have protein so I had a little greek yogurt to boot.

Like I said, soooo done putting things away for tonight. I don’t anticipate running tomorrow, so that can be my workout. My google reader is insane and it’s getting past my bed time. Yikes! TGIF

3 Down, 2 Nut Butter, And 1 To Go

Woohoo! I’ve officially completed 3 classes. I definitely didn’t rock out my final this morning, but I also didn’t tank it, so I’m fine with that. But best of all, it’s over! Now I have 2 1/2 days to write my Greek History paper, study dates and people, read for passage ID’s, and brainstorm 3 in class essays. That all sounds scary, but I’m just telling myself in my head that in 72 hours it’ll all be over for good or for bad and I’ll be heading home for the holidays 🙂

Last night, I started off my desserts with what else but chocolate.

Q.Bel Peanut Butter Milk Chocolate Wafer Bars

After some of the other Q.bel products, this was a bit of a let down. It totally just didn’t pull together :-/ But it was so perfect in theory! Don’t you hate products like that? Oh well. What was awesome was finishing my Latin paper. It wasn’t due until Friday but I wanted to hand it in with my final so that I could be done with that class. My in-bed snack was very typical of this week and last.

Oatmeal With Smart Balance, Advent Chocolate, And A Milk Chocolate Newman Cup, Chocolate Vitatop

A bowl of milk chocolate and peanut butter goodness and a vitatop, because it’s “nutritious” 🙂 I tried going to bed early but I don’t think that really worked out. At least it wasn’t an awful nights sleep so that I was well rested when I got up at 7:30. No run planned for the a.m. Instead I needed to get dressed, make breakfast, and prep for my final. I decided to give another new chocolate a try.

This chocolate was definitely the tastiest thing going here. It was just a crisp, clean dark chocolate. And it was so nice and thick that it made the chocolate shavings come out perfectly(can you tell that’s a big deal with me ;-)). Does anybody else actually enjoy runny peanut butter? I get a little disappointed when my PB doesn’t melt and just sits like a rock o my yogurt. Oh well.

Like I said, the test went just like I thought it would. I had planned to run afterwards but it took a little longer than I planned. I also decided that, if I end up not running at all today, I’d feel perfectly fine with that. Some days I feel “lazy” not running but today is not one of those days. Instead I decided to go out and pick myself up a “treat”, obeying that 11th commandment we all know and love. So I grabbed a snack and walked to Whole Foods.

Almond And Cashew KIND Bar

Oh my how I love this bar. I picked it up a few days at the cafe where I can use my school card 😉 All it is is dates, honey, almond and cashews–fine by me! Anyway, I called ahead to Whole Foods to make sure they had the “treat” I was thinking of, and once I grabbed some coupons I was good to go. The walk there and back(2.5 miles) was so perfect and let it sink in that all of what I was stressing is 3/4 of the way done. I’m definitely a fan of stepping back and breathing. Lookie what I picked myself up:

Artisana Walnut Butter

Only a blogger would reward himself with nut butter… It’s so true, but this was perfect. I was thinking walnut butter sounded interesting for the past few months, and after I sampled and reviewed Artisana’s here, I knew I wanted to get myself a big jar. If I had a food processor, I’d be tempted to make my own. But what I love about this is the touch of cashew Artisana adds that I would not know how to replicate. I also got “standard” groceries.

And by “standard” I mean copious amounts of yogurt and a Q.bel near the checkout 🙂 Last day of So Delicious soy yogurt being 33% off in New England fyi! While I was out, I checked my email near the mail room, and it told me I had a package! I wasn’t expecting anything(or so I thought), until I saw what it was.

NuttZo

Another nut butter! 2 weeks ago, Kath had a deal where the first 1000 people on OpenSky got a free $25 towards their purchase with free shipping. Since NuttZo was less than $25, I jumped at the chance to get this for free. Wouldn’t you? Thanks soo much, Kath, for hosting that! I also stopped by the dining hall where they had steamed veggies. I think I got odd looks from the woman behind the counter for taking A LOT of steamed vegetables and avoiding the broccoli, but it was so worth it for this lunch.

Chickpeas And Steamed Veggies In Tikka Massala Sauce

For a Polish/Italian, I’m not so bad at making myself an Indian delicacy 🙂 I tossed the vegetables(which I weighed on my kitchen scale out of curiosity and they were literally a pound. Thank God this wasn’t from the Whole Foods salad bar!) with the rest of my Tikka Massala sauce and some salt and curry powder. I also took a serving of chickpeas from the dining hall and had that along side. I think all the cream in that sauce might have upset my stomach a bit but it was soooo worth it. Now I’m sipping Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride to make things better, and it’s definitely working 🙂

Time flies because I walked in the door 2 hours ago and just now am finishing posting 2 hours later! I can’t complain because I just found a ghost story on the Discovery channel 🙂

Target Hopping

Yesterday was the epitome of a rainy day in New England. It did get off to a rockin’ start, however, when I got this in the mail right as I was posting yesterday’s blog entry:

Me And Goji Granola

I got the opportunity to custom build my own cereal from [me] & goji. Let me tell you, this was a ton of fun! I’ll go into the process more in my review of them on another day, but they have TONS of options for you to pick out and make your very own cereal. I ended up making a mix called “Chocolate And Berries” with vanilla granola, gojis, raspberries, blueberries, chocolate covered gojis, and chocolate covered peanuts–yum! Of course I was ready to dive in for breakfast.

 

 

Banana Oats With Chocolate Butter Toffee Peanut Butter, Chocolate Raspberry Yogurt With Chocolate And Berries Me And Goji Granola

Loved it! Thanks [me] & goji! There’s definitely not skimping on the mix-ins with them; this was like chocolate and berry overload(except that’s of course not possible). I think my favorite was the organic chocolate covered peanuts. The oats were so simple and yet hit the spot; a touch of sea salt on top really had the flavors placed. My morning was pretty lame, but that made it excellent. I was stuck home alone in the rain, and the highlight was showering and getting straight back in to pajamas 🙂 Montana was clearly in the spirit, too, since he got out of his crate, went to the bathroom, and fell asleep under a blanket. I made lunch in time for Days.

 

 

Stuffing, Spicy Chicken Sausage, Broccoli, Grand Marnier Sweet Potatoes

Have I mentioned that I love leftovers? I never have them when I cook for myself, but I think it’s fun to play with them when they come around. Everything here was leftover except the broccoli, which I made because I wanted some green. I think I’ve taken in more alcohol from those sweet potatoes than I have since being at college(OK, that’s not saying much with me). I will never tire of Whole Foods’ stuffing; thank God we have 24oz left. After some soap opera and homeworking, I decided to transition to the kitchen.

Seasonal Music Channel

Oh yes, there’s a channel that only plays Christmas music, all day 😉 Sometimes you have to wonder what barrel they scraped the bottom of to get the renditions of carols by the people they do, but other times they’re quite festive. Anyway, I decided to make up a new recipe and hope and pray it came out good(and chocolatey!).

Double Chocolate Pillows

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • 1/2 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup turbinado sugar
  • 1/3 cup chocolate chips

Wet And Dry

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and line 2 cookie trays with wax paper. In a large bowl, sift together the first five ingredients. Mix in the chocolate chips evenly distributing. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs with the oil and extract. Add in the pumpkin and sugar and mix until all is dissolved. Pour the wet into the dry and fold together until fully incorporated(batter will be very thick). Scoop into 24 mounds, flatten, and bake for 10-12 minutes, until puffed and firm to the touch.

The batter was incredibly thick; I was thinking of maybe adding some liquid, but I’m glad I didn’t. They ended up taking 14 minutes in my oven, but smelt so good when they were done.

Hello, chocolate. These were so soft and light but with a heavy, rich cocoa smell. Of course, in order to truly appreciate one, I had to try it first over oats.

Pumpkin Oats With A Double Chocolate Cookie And Butter Toffee Peanut Butter

Much better. The cookie was delicious, with a very dark taste of chocolate. It wasn’t quite bitter, but also not sweet. Bittersweet maybe? I’ll definitely make these again, but I might swap the 1/4 cup oil for 1/4 cup cream or full fat yogurt to give it more of a milky flavor. I’m sure you could go the otherway and veganize this recipe fairly easily, too, but I was not feeling that creative. When my parents finally got home from the funeral, I took the chance to get out of the house.

Target

Thankfully, Target had died down 12 hours after it opened. And surprisingly the store wasn’t entirely picked over. Then again, there wasn’t much left. I found a good deal on a camera, which a, let’s just say aloof, salesgirl led me to believe they had but when the manager came and I tried buying it pointed out it wasn’t the right one. Well they supposedly had some at another Target, so we picked up some things and moved on. After that we hit up a natural grocery store and Stop & Shop and, lastly, the other Target. When we got there, however, those 11 cameras they supposedly had were no longer. Wtf? They assured us they’d get some overnight if we really cared to come back. I’m not sure I’m that invested in the purchase, so I’ll have to give it with more thought. In the end my shopping was a lot more modest.

I either got really screwed on some stuff or really good deals on the other, because the peanut butter chips were the most expensive item by $2+ dollars. It was also well past dinner by the time we got home from Target hopping.

Roasted Brussel Sprouts In Balsamic Vinegar, Catfish, Roasted And Mashed Butternut Squash

Who buys two types of fish the day after Thanksgiving when there’s well over a few pounds of turkey in the fridge? My mother, apparently. And yet I’m the one who gets the name for being a wasteful shopper. That pretty much rubbed me the wrong way for the night, but rather than try to pick a fight I just took a plate of food and removed myself from the situation. I hardly feel comfortable having meat once a day, and I don’t feel comfortable at all wasting it, so all of this is meat overload for me and has just made me feel tense thinking about it. To take my mind away, I had a delectable snack.

Soy Yogurt With Peanut Milk Chocolate

This candy bar definitely had me with “caramelized peanuts with a touch of sea salt”–could somebody please adapt that and put it on my gravestone? All Stop & Shop had was flavored soy yogurt, but it was also on sale for a dollar, so good enough. I think there’s a bit of irony topping soy yogurt in milk chocolate that I never appreciated until now… I also watched this week’s Modern Family, which was more than fantastic. Can Fizzbo please come to my party? It’s OK if the comb sheaths aren’t there, though.

Green & Black Organic Peanut Milk Chocolate

I didn’t like this chocolate bar at all. That must be why it followed me upstairs and into my room 😉 After a while I had trouble sleeping. Hmmm, maybe sugar isn’t a better night time snack than oatmeal? Fascinating. I had a pretty genious thought, though.

Free-Range Turkey With Salt And Rosemary

Tryptophan! I’ve heard it’s also in legumes(and thus peanut butter) but I’m sure in greater amounts in turkey. I salted and seasoned 3oz of leftovers. While that was good, it didn’t do the job, so I did another 2oz. After that I good have fell into a food coma, and was asleep soon enough.

This morning I slept in until; I think vacation is making me lazy, haha. Isn’t that the point of Thanksgiving? It’s not looking like running weather and I could always use rest(I just never take it) so today will probably be a sans running day as well. Maybe I’ll work up a sweat at Target or a Whole Foods–we’ll have to see.

Encyclopedia Achoo To Distance PR

As ridiculous as it sounds, I am so much happier now that I’ve admitted to myself that I love oatmeal for breakfast. I love it. And I’ll shout it to the world. I’ve been resisting having oatmeal on Tuesdays and Thursdays and other days when I simply wouldn’t have much time for one reason or another. But a quickie with some oats is much more satisfying than spending long, hellish time with anything not in the morning. Perhaps that’s why I wasn’t very hungry when I got out at noon yesterday. Instead of eat immediately, I went to check my mail where I had something amazing waiting for me.

Amazing Grass Sampler

Amazing Grass that is. The folks at Amazing Grass were kind enough to send me all these goodies to try and review. This could not have come at a better time. As I slowly feel myself getting sick, I realize it’s probably because I rely on the dining hall for all my veggies and when they don’t have good ones I just don’t get them in me. With these products, hopefully I’ll be feeling 100%. I also picked up a lunch on my way back to the dorm and had a ball making a bowl.

Taco Bowl With Lettuce, Spinach, Shaved Cucumber, Shredded Carrot, Vegan Taco Filling, Peppers, And Full Fat Voskos Yogurt

Taco Bell, Q’doba, BoLoco, all those places ain’t got nothing on me. And would you believe that most of this came from the dining hall? All I had to do was put it together by making the base with salad bar fixings and plopping the vegan taco filling on top. It was delicious! In the filling was tofu, tempeh, molasses, tomato puree, and seasoning. And topping it with the yogurt was sooo good. Even though it’s full fat, I’m going to pretend like it was healthy because it’s yogurt 🙂 But I would definitely opt for that in place of cheese any day.

Well you can’t say I didn’t warn you that this would be how I would spend my day:

Resting

I only had a bad sneezing bout for about an hour. The rest of the time was mostly a runny nose. It was definitely a good day for daytime tv, though. There was actually a plot progression on Days Of Our Lives this week! Can you believe that? And Rachael Ray made a sweet potato casserole with bruleed bananas on top. Um, yum? I also did some major behind-the-scenes blog working and you can expect some product review summaries coming your way real soon. At some point, I decided I needed more green in my diet.

Amazing Grass Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Bar

I’ll admit: The green innards of this freaked me out a little. But oh my God was this good! I’d much rather have this than any Snickers bar or anything, plus it has incredible(avoiding overusing the word amazing) nutrition. You can read my full review here. Now I can’t wait to try others. Did anyone else catch Oprah? It was all pretty adult material for something on at 4pm. Jenna Jameson and Oprah in the same room was not something I expected. After getting more work done I had another snack.

Plain Chobani With Strawberry Conserves

This new jam, excuse me, conserve is ok. I guess it’s size and price and the fact that it’s organic made it a steal. I’m just happy whenever the fruit is the first ingredient. This was my last individual yogurt, so afterwards I went to all the open school facilities I knew of that sold yogurt, and none had another plain Chobani. It was a bit of a disappointment(mainly because it was too cold to be walking around like a nut), but I was able to grab dinner on the way back.

Asparagus Spears, Honey Ginger Vegetables, Veggie Marinated Tempeh

Apparently when my dining hall does tempeh they like to do it all out. I was just happy to have another meal where I didn’t need to provide any ingredients. I love it when they have asparagus; that’s one of my favorite ingredients and I literally took all the ones they had out. Definitely some good cold-fighting vitamins in that, right? The tempeh just kind of tasted like vegetables, if that makes any sense, but it was good enough. What it wasn’t was fulling, so after I went out and came back from buying coffee and flavored Chobani, I grabbed another bar.

I’m not going to lie. I could have just eaten the chocolate shell off and been just as happy 🙂 As much as I hate that feeling of still being hungry after dinner(oh, and I do, a lot) I now know it’s better to just honor your hunger and accept you’re still hungry rather than pretend otherwise. You can read my review of this one here. I don’t think it was as nutritionally good or flavorful as the peanut butter one but it was decent. I was not expecting(and really enjoyed) the hint of peppermint–so seasonal!

The Biggest Loser didn’t blow me away last night. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s just not as entertaining without the awesome orange team anymore? That must be the case. Instead I did some Greek and snacked.

 

Oatmeal With Smart Balance And Baking Chips

 

Along with my morning oatmeal revelation, I’ve come to terms with the fact that I like oatmeal at night. I don’t like cleaning the bowl, but I like oatmeal and that’s enough(plus if I’m eating it in the morning who needs a perfectly clean bowl anyway?). I’ve also come to grips with the fact that I like TJ’s baking chips the best; they aren’t as “healthy” as the grain-sweetened ones nor are they vegan, but since when do chocolate chips need to be healthy? Bring on the sugar and dry milk powder, baby.

Correction: I really like oatmeal at night. Except I’ve learned you can’t cook the pumpkin and oats at the same time, or it comes out rather gritty. Still, this pumpkin and vanilla chip combo is awesome. Someone should make a bar like this *hint*hint*.

This morning I woke up with a really dry throat, but otherwise energized. After guzzling down coffee and water, I felt good enough to run. I didn’t know how far I’d go, but I could feel it would be a long one so I grabbed a bar.

 

Berry Whole Food Energy Bar

Really? Were you expecting anything else at this point? I don’t have a chance to review it this morning but when I do it will be available here and I’ll be sure to start tomorrow’s post with it. I got going fairly early(around 6:45) so time was not an issue this morning. I just ran and ran. And I kept running all the way to 15 miles in 2:01:06! It felt great and I felt great. My previous record, by the way, was 14 miles set last Monday, but after that I was dehydrated and exhausted. Today I felt super and energized.

 

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Mighty Maple And Maple Syrup, Eggnog Yogurt

I won’t pretend like these aren’t the same flavors I always have; they just taste so good! But I had to make the Nog yogurt twice. Note: It doesn’t work well if you use vanilla yogurt to start instead of plain because the consistency otherwise is absolutely soupy. Now hopefully I’ll find more plain yogurt around the campus today or otherwise today will be very low-gurt. I could try to squeeze in a Whole Foods trip between the end of class and sunset but on these legs I’m thinking not.

A Collegiate Dinner

To everyone who asked how the peanut butter was, I tried to sum it up at breakfast: it’s very thin and runny. The vanilla gives it a nice sweetness. And the cranberries were a bit of a surprise, namely that they’re very finely chopped and not whole, but you still get a lot of cranberry flavor in each bite even if you can’t see them. Considering it’s a store brand flavored nut butter, it’s really good, so I’d buy one if you see it.

Speaking of pumpkin, yesterday’s pumpkin oats really held me over, so I wasn’t very hungry come lunch. I grabbed some random veggies from the dining hall, and went back to my dorm, first to catch up on internet stuff and then make lunch for later.

Cranberry Mustard Tofu, Sweet Potato, Zucchini

To be honest this wasn’t so spectacular. I thought I might hit upon the next tofu genius recipe by putting together mustard, TJ Cranberry apple butter, maple syrup, salt, and cinnamon, but it was mostly a flavorless mess. The sweet potato, on the other hand, was perfect; sweet potato never disappoints. Now I’m down to 1 under my bed so I should stock up soon. I ate this mostly in Greek History, in which my professor, who’s pretty much the most opinionated man, hateful of anything deemed “good” by pop culture, professed his love for Michael Scott. I knew he had a soul somewhere in him.

I had a slip in my mailbox which meant I needed to go to a window and get in line to get a package. 2 people in front of me was Emma Watson, but I realized I only had 2 minutes until my class upstairs started so I had to bail and get the package later. Lame. My teacher was late, too, so I totally could have stuck around. Anyway, I had not 1 but 2 packages waiting for me. Exciting!

P.B. Loco Peanut Butter Samplers

The first was some samplers from P.B. Loco to try and review! I’ve had the chocolate chip cookie dough, but I don’t think I’ve properly reviewed it in the new format yet, so expect that soon. Also, I’ve never had(but have oogled many times) the white chocolate raspberry so I can’t wait to give that a taste! Thanks, P.B. Loco!

Strawberries And Cocoa MojaMix

The 2nd package was equally exciting. Remember when I mentioned winning a Mojamix? They run weekly contests on Facebook to win a prize and 2 weeks ago I was the lucky winner! I got to make a trail mix of my own, and I went with ginger granola with cacao nibs, chocolate sprouted sunflower seeds, dried strawberries and persimmons, and chia seeds. Great, now that I’ve just told you all about these contests I’m sure I’ll have a lot more competition for the future.

I spent the first part of my afternoon walking up Thayer Street to Blue State Coffee. I had a hankering for a carrot cake cupcake, even though it’s not Cupcake Friday, but they were all out 😦 Next I found another of the dining halls(yes, it’s been 3 months and I’m still “finding” things), and made it back to my dorm, where I had something like carrot cake…

Banana Oats With Chocolate Hazelnut Spread And Maple Vanilla Frosting

Yum. This was perfect with vanilla powder, vanilla stevia, and Trader Joe cinnamon. The chocolate hazelnut spread I use is made by Rapunzel. It’s organic, and has about half the sugar of Nutella, but it’s still not really a nut butter. I ate this while watching Sarah Palin on Oprah. Anybody else watch this? I felt like it was all pretty tame, except when her grandbaby’s-daddy came up. He totally deserves the bashing, though; there’s no way 20 years from now he’s going to look back and think Playgirl was a smart call. Afterwards I had one of my favorite in-a-jar snacks.

I love the spoonfuls of just jam you get when you do this. And my Mojamix is off the wall good! I couldn’t really sense the chia, but the dried strawberries were heavenly and my new favorite dried fruit. The persimmons were a bit flavorless but maybe the sweetness of the Oikos was too much for them.

By the time 6:30 came around I was pretty hungry again. I met a friend from High School at the dining hall for dinner, as planned. I decided I didn’t need to look at the menu for tonight and just go in. Bad call. There were random vegetables I wouldn’t have minded, but nothing that was a meal. I still wanted to catch up so I sat with him and talked while he ate, and made like I wasn’t hungry(though I probably came off like a spaz because I was planning my dinner in my head). Once he was done, I grabbed some things and pretty much ran to my room to cook.

Beautiful, no? I learned from Le Cordon Blue Collar. I think some of you were in my class 🙂 I’m not saying all my other meals have been Grade A, but this one felt unique, and like my first real “your in college” meal: random veggies from the dining hall, canned tuna, frozen veggie burger, and a slice of American cheese. God bless America. As random as it felt it hit the spot. Oh, and apparently TJ makes cheese that refuses to melt. Like at all. Oh, oh, and my dining hall does have canned tuna at the salad bar, but over the Summer my mother, who’s one of the least picky eaters ever ironically, convinced me if I don’t eat only a specific type of canned tuna at the rate I do then I’m going to die of mercury and so now I only eat light tuna from Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s. She implants that anxiety into me but then eats God-knows-what tuna salad sandwiches from Subway. Thanks.

My entire night was ups and downs but I’ll abbreviate. Downs: Spilling water all over and behind my bed. Cutting my knuckle at some point on something. Sneezing a hell of a lot and concluding I’ve got a head cold. Only getting done 1 poem in Latin. Ups: Winning a coupon giveaway. Excusing copious amounts of coffee because coffee has antioxidants. And this oatmeal.

 

Carrot Cake Oateal With Cream Cheese Frosting And Banana Pineapple Rum Jam

 

Believe it or not, I’ve never made carrot cake oatmeal before. And let me tell you, this was weird and complicated. I could never do this on a hungry stomach, but I had enough patience for dessert. I assembled the base oatmeal, shredded carrots, and raisins, and cooked that with a lot of water. On the side I made a cream cheese, yogurt, and vanilla stevia frosting, and topped it all with banana pineapple rum jam. I recognize that there are a ton of variations on carrot cake but my version(aka, the correct one ;-)) always must involve raisins and pineapple. It was good, but the carrot shreds were too long(they were from the salad bar). I’d like to try this again more homemade.

That oatmeal with 2 cups of coffee did a number on me and completely filled me up. I didn’t even have an appetite for anything more, but I felt like I should have had an appetite. As much as I hate a feeling of needing to eat, I made this spread. And after I decided that I really wasn’t hungry for the muffin, I ate it and a few fingersful of peanut butter from the jar. Oops. The only part that really annoyed me was losing that sense of control.

After any time like that, I like to get a good run in and have a healthy breakfast. You could argue I do that most days but some days feel better than others. I felt like I struggled the first few miles but once I got control of the tv straightened up my form it became easier. My original gym friend, who I hadn’t seen much lately, introduced herself as Gail. Apparently, she works on the first floor of my building and has seen me walk past her window. And now I know her name I can stalk her on the faculty website. Score!(big jk on that last part). I ran 10 miles in 84:14, and when I got back I was ready for some super suprerfood.

My superfoods of choice were goji, pumpkin, orange essence, mint, and pepita. I think that’s a good line-up no? The oatmeal totally hit the spot with some salt of course. Can salt be a superfood, too? I was thinking of having eggnog yogurt, but then I realized just how much I have that and how little Nog I have left and though better save it for a rainy day. Instead this yogurt was just perfect! I love these cookies; such an interesting blend of flavors that in the end just work. And now that I’ve had a breakfast that didn’t rely on white chocolate, I feel fresh and revitalized.

Today is one of those days where I’ll have a lot of free tie but I’ll probably be spending it feet up in front of the TV. I’m not a person who can nap; I used to be but I’m not anymore. I’d love to nap to get rid of this head cold but instead lounging around with warm nog will have to do.

I act like a blogger when I read other blogs rather than study for my test in 30 minutes. Fortunately, I peeled myself away from the screen to make it to class in time. The test was a bit longer than any of us thought it’d be but I feel like exactly the passages I studied were the ones on the test and that I did really well. I guess the Greek shirt just has good luck in it?

I act like a blogger when I get obsessed with a food. Now it is tofu salad with The Heat Is On peanut butter. Every time there’s carrot at the salad bar, I’ve convinced myself I’m doing the right thing by eating this. That, and it’s just too good to turn down. I used a little less tofu this time(because I ran out) and the peanut butter flavor was even better. Definitely needed some stevia and salt though to pumpkin it up.

I act like a blogger when I’m convinced Greek yogurt can be a “dessert”. All it needs is some vanilla, raisins, cinnamon, and voila. I was trying to recreate this amazing rum raisin gelato made by a Massachusetts company which is so light and smooth but I don’t have rum. I probably could find that in a dormitory pretty easy but I didn’t feel like “meeting the neighbors” with the line “Excuse me, do you have rum for my Chobani?”.

I act like a blogger when I spend 30 minutes making a granola for the Facebook  MojaMix contest I won. I went with a ginger base with dried strawberries, persimmons, chia seeds, chocolate sprouted sunflower seeds, and cacao nibs. How awesome does that sound? I can’t wait till it comes!

I act like a blogger when I ditch on the end of Days Of Our Lives and all of Rachael Ray to go get groceries.

I act like a blogger when I almost neglect an awkward “Hi” with a classmate because I’m fascinated by how the raisins soaked up the yogurt liquid and were now cinnamon infused. Seriously, that was awesome. I didn’t even plan it like that but viola. The raisins got so moist and well seasoned, it totally converted me to liking raisins again.

I act like a blogger when I whip out my camera in the middle of the dining hall to take a picture of dinner. That’s a fun way to meet people. I thought of you all when the main vegetarian dish was pumpkin ravioli in cream sauce 🙂 I, however, was still a little pumpkined out, and the cream sauce made it a little less appealing. Instead I had the vegan BBQ navy beans. These taste just like good baked beans should taste like and were amazing. They had a very deep molasses and tomato flavor to them. All I could think about eating them was how smelly my run would be this morning but how I didn’t care.

Banana Goodness Oatmeal

 

I act like a blogger when a good night is evaluated on the basis of the oatmeal. Last night I decided to try and recreate banana goodness bread in my microwave since I haven’t made a loaf in a few weeks. I used 2oz banana, vanilla powder, and vanilla stevia in the oatmeal, and topped with semi-sweet baking chips. It was a decent substitute but of course not the real thing. I also sprinkled salt over the top at the end and I think that really helped the flavor.

I act like a blogger when I stress over watching Grey’s Anatomy or The Office. Oh wait, I was doing that years ago. Nevermind.

I act like a blogger when carbo loading couldn’t be easier. I defrosted one of Veggie Girl’s Fig And Almond blondies. After a few month of being frozen, they aren’t quite as good, but a little cream cheese fixed that. I also had an english muffin with mushed banana and chocolate chips(and salt, of course) and cinnamon vanilla sunflower butter. Perfect. Rachael Ray was on The Jay Leno Show and gave some hilarious answers to 10 at 10 in case anyone missed that.

I act like a blogger when I set my alarm at 6:15 to get up and do my long run. I had planned for another 13.1 miler today. I wasn’t particularly hungry but I figured food would be good so I grabbed a mojo.

Apparently, this bar isn’t just one of my favorites but a favorite of a lot of you guys, too! I just loved the saltiness. And the combo of pb chips and peanuts gave me good immediate and long lasting energy. I actually constantly forgot to be eating this, so it lasted me 13 miles. Speaking of which, I set a new PR record of 1:46:28! That’s the fastest I’ve ran a half marathon by a good 3 minutes

I act like a blogger when I choose running over course registration. As in, course registration opened at 8, and by the time I got back to my dorm it was 8:40. I didn’t think things would go so fast but 1 of the courses I really wanted to get into filled up fast and I got pretty upset with myself for letting me miss it. I’m hoping I can still wiggle my way into that class yet, but I’ll talk about that more once I know more.

I act like a blogger when I feel compelled to perfect an oatmeal recipe the next chance I get. This time I used 3oz banana and a lot more salt. I think it came out a tad bit better.

I act like a blogger when I decide a theme like “I act like a blogger” would be cutesy for a post and then by the end I want to go back and delete every time I wrote those annoying damn words! Haha. Don’t forget it’s Cookie Friday! I need to get my thinking cap going. And I’m going to work very hard to fix that class situation I mentioned, because I am a bit disappointed and I’m sure I can get in if I pull some strings. Anyway, have a good day!

Cherries Or Cranberries?

Before I forget, yesterday’s breakfast was a bunch of new products I wanted to tell you about including Sunland’s Valencia Creamy Peanut Butter, Voskos’ Organic Vanilla Bean Greek Yogurt, and Nature’s Path Organic Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal, all of which will be summarized on the main page at some point so don’t worry if you miss them now.

Good morning. Is it good? It’s raining the tears of Semonides here(sorry, all this Classical studying has my brain in the wrong millenium!). Yesterday morning I left a little early to grab a cup of joe before class.

And Thank God I did. My Greek professor is still sick so we got a substitute instead. Rather than a placid, middle aged woman we had a bit more lively, energetic Swede with a heavy accent. Fun, just not at 10:30. Class got particularly amusing when him and the soft-spoken British grad student were trying to communicate and it just… wasn’t working. I actually wasn’t ready for lunch when I got out, so I came back to my dorm and admired Steve, the stevia plant.

I was told to trim him to be a foot tall a while back when I first got him, which I did. Now he’s gone crazy and has grown 3 feet tall. If you’re horrible with plants, get a stevia bush; they’re impossible to kill no matter how little you water them(and taste really good). After a while of that amusement, I picked up stuff from the dining hall and made a cozy lunch in my room.

Recently, I got to thinking, “You know, my pee smells too floral. I think I’m going to eat a ton of asparagus”. Or I just love it and they so rarely have it at the dining hall that I might have gone a bit nuts when I stumbled upon it. I coupled that with some maple mustard tofu(so good!) and a whole microwaved sweet potato from last week’s farmers’ market. I have a good 2+ pounds of sweet potato under my bed, so I feel pretty set for a while.

I did the typical Days Of Our Lives while blog reading thing. I swear, soaps never go anywhere in plot but they’re so entertaining. I was planning on hanging around for Rachael Ray but the show didn’t look too interesting and the weather was not getting better. I had some high hopes of going to Whole Foods rain or shine so I bundled up and headed out. On the way I stopped by the mailing center.

One was from my mom and the other my grandmother; though the fact that they both have Simpsons stamps and my mom’s handwriting on them makes me think(and not too hard). They were Halloween cards with some money. I love that being a college student Halloween is a reason to receive cards. What I don’t get is why these needed to be mailed when I saw both of them Sunday. Odd people. I also snacked on this while shopping:

Whole Foods now sells their naturally colored buttercream frosting by the tub for the holiday season. Ummm, hello. This is a) a dream b) very dangerous. On the one hand, I could use these to make some nice treats that look awesome and I would feel good serving. On the other hand, I don’t see that frosting it making it through the ride/walk home. In case anyone was wondering, it’s 5.99/lb. Somehow, one of those didn’t end up in my basket, but look what did!

Groceries

I went a little shopping happy on this trip; money from relatives will do that. I got a new flavor of Lightlife‘s tempeh to review, along with my favorite product of theirs: tempeh bacon. Some Oikos and So Delicious Soy Yogurt were a must. I felt like talkin’ turkey for dinner so I got some fresh sliced from the deli. And of coarse I hit up the bulk bins for oats and, my treat of the trip, dried cherries. At first, I wasn’t going to get them because they’re a bit pricey. At the check out, the woman couldn’t read the bin # I wrote down(I swear my handwriting isn’t that bad). Instead of asking me to read it, she looked up the code in the big book and entered it herself. What she failed to realize was that they were cherries, not cranberries. She didn’t ask me or anything, just input the cranberry code and continued scanning items. Since cranberries are 1/2 the price of cherries, I basically got them half off. And since I didn’t lie or be at all misleading through any of that, I feel pretty damn good. When I got back to my room I made some oats to fight off the gloomy weather.

Can I tell you a little secret? If you pour maple syrup over the top and stick it back in the microwave, the water cooks off and the maple crystalizes, not to mention smells like candy. Oh was this good. It made a “serious” Oprah episode bearable to study through. It almost made my Epic Poetry homework bearable to read… almost. I thought I’d be reaching for a snack later, seeing as how most of this was lovely, unrefined sugar. Surprisingly it held me over until dinner.

There are only 29 days to Thanksgiving, but who’s counting, really? I made the sandwich in my dorm and brought it to the dining hall. That combo is ridiculous; I don’t even want the turkey come Thanksgiving; I just want the leftovers. So I guess I have to wait 30 days then, huh? When I got back to my dorm, I broke into this:

I picked this up at the Green Mountain dinner last Wednesday. I already have one canister open, but I wanted to try this to see if it had a more robust, dark flavor. Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite as strong as the whole bean house decaf I made back at home, but it definitely had a deeper flavor than Whole Food’s Decaf Hazelnut.

Tuesday night meant Biggest Loser, of course. Was Abby’s story on The Biggest Loser not the saddest thing? I was not expecting the show to take such a dramatic turn; I think even Jillian was cracked by that. The Biggest Loser also means ridiculous snackage that the contestants could never eat.

I broke my own rule with this one; I stole the peanut butter chips from a trail mix I own because I don’t have any peanut butter chips. I hate it when people go through a trail mix and screw up proportions. Then again, my love for peanut butter chips is greater than my hatred for that. I don’t even remember when I had the bottom of that muffin(presumably in yogurt). I’ve just had the top sitting around for so long I figured I’d eat it. I’m wicked exciting that the next time I eat from that Smart balance jar, it will be from the jar.

Could one thing have gone routinely this morning? Didn’t think so. I woke up at 6:40… and then again at 6:50. I honestly didn’t feel like running, but when analyzing the situation, I realized it wasn’t for any good reason other than the sun wasn’t out and it was running. I told myself “The lights will be on in the gym and it has a roof. You’ll be fine.” That’s about as peppy as my pep talks get. While I grabbed one of these and hit the gym:

At first I thought that today I needed a running body more than ever. What I got was even better: no one else around. Score. I just put on my TV shows and ran. At first I thought 8, then 10. I was taking it at a very slow comfortable, and I knew being outside wasn’t happening much today, so I went on to 13.1. I was planning to do this Friday, but I figured I’d push it up 2 days. I finished in 1:53:04 which really put me behind for the morning. My roommate was not only awake but dressed and studying when I got back!(That’s not like him). Even though I was short on time, I decided to make myself a nice breakfast to feel like the king I like to think I am:

I don’t know egg terminology. Is it poached when you leave them unscrambled and try to cook the whites without cooking the yolks? Well that’s what I did, or tried to do at least. It’s a lot easier with a skillet than a microwave, but 1 of the yolks was nice and runny. I think I need to revisit that peanut butter over some oats later because it’s just too good. Now I’m very behind for a Wednesday but thankfully should have everything done in time for class.

My all-natural heart was very happy to hear that Necco candy is going natural! I haven’t had Necco wafers in ages; I don’t even think I liked them. But I’m very happy to hear they’re taking this step and I’ll certainly give the new stuff a try.

How The Time Flies

As it turns out, when you’re really behind, an 80 minute class being cancelled isn’t as much a savior as you’d think. Like I mentioned, I crawled back into bed yesterday morning and did plenty I’d been neglecting around the room

  • Read blogs
  • Dust coffee grinds and salt off desk
  • Take out the trash
  • Clean plates and silverware

It felt like so much more at the time; how depressing. I got word(aka, I used the internet) of a special dish in one of the dining halls across campus, so I walked over and it was better than I could have hoped for:

The menu said there’d be squash apple soup. Well they ran out of squash so instead it was pumpkin! I added a bit of flax from my fridge and the tempeh bacon and peanut butter of course. Let’s ignore the fact that this is essentially my breakfast everyday and just focus on how the maple/salty/pumpkin all went together so well. I really hope that wasn’t an oil heavy soup because I ate a lot of it. While I was out I also picked up some mail and got something really exciting:

After discovering their new line of Tempehtation products, I got in touch with Lightlife. You know me; I’m by no means a vegan(more on that later), but I love trying out new cuisines and was so impressed by what they offered. They sent me coupons to pick out and review some of their products. Naturally I was overjoyed and went out on a special Whole Foods trip right after Days and Rachael Ray.

It was incredible in New England yesterday; the weather actually warmed up and the clouds cleared. I walked and read some Ancient Greek odes to Demeter and Aphrodite(because doesn’t everyone do this on their way to Whole Foods?) and was there before I knew it. I must have been fast in the store, because the whole trip(1.15 miles there and then back) took only 80 minutes. On the way back I had a snack:

This was another one of the flavors Clif sent my way that I could not say no to; the name itself had so much promise. Well, it was decent, and the salty/sweet was most definitely there. But it definitely didn’t win me over. My full review of it is here. I’m hoping after this one the rest will exceed my expectations like the PB&J flavor did. When I got back to my dorm, this is what I had to show for the adventure:

Did you know there’s now a 365 brand of pumpkin that’s cheaper than Libby’s? I’m giving it a chance even though I swear by my dealer, Libby, in hopes that it’s good. I went with the Ginger Teryaki Tempehtation dinner for my first tasting because it sounded amazing. I also picked up some soy yogurt for reasons that will become clear tomorrow and some teryaki salmon from the salad bar for dinner(only 1.86 for a salmon meal! score!). I worked a bit more until 5, at which point I realized I was hunnnnngrry. I would have made oats but my roommate was napping and those can get extensive and loud with me. Instead I tried a different in a jar:

If you can do oats in a nut butter jar, you can definitely do yogurt in a jam jar. My favorite banana pineapple rum jam was on its last leg, so I helped it along by adding 8oz Stonyfield plain yogurt. Yum! I think there was more in the jar than I realized there was, but that only made it that much better. It tasted just like a pineapple Chobani because the yogurt had a little fat in it. The brownie I threw in for a bit of fiber. It definitely held me over until I planned on meeting up with people(and an unpictured coffee from Blue State definitely didn’t hurt). I already had my main protein picked out(the salmon) but some veggies were definitely lacking from my day:

Let me tell you one thing: that salmon was salty. Now, I didn’t even do much to it, so if I’m saying that you know it must have been heavily doused. Don’t get me wrong; it was still damn good. But even so it could have used a tad less. I grabbed a tiny whole sweet potato instead of a 1/2 a big one; I love the skin part and this maximized the amount I got(not to mention the inside wasn’t burnt). The cauliflower and tahini combo I was not a fan of. It tasted very heavy and almost like parmesan even though I’m positive there wasn’t any cheese in that dish. Is this how tahini should be? It didn’t impress me, though I suppose if I were a vegan and ever missed the taste of cheese I could turn to tahini.

Maybe it was a denser meal than I realized, because hunger didn’t come until deep into The Biggest Loser. The blue team made a smart call by sending the black team home even if it was a tough one to make. Normally seeing other people lose weight makes me want food; I guess I was too deep into Herodotus to notice them. School was definitely getting me a bit stressed. What’s good eats when you got stress? CHOCOLATE:

Oh, and having that chocolate be probiotic definitely doesn’t hurt. This was another Attune product I reviewed here and oh my God was this good! It was just like any other premium dark chocolate bar, but had 30% my DV of calcium and 3g of fiber and 6.1 million little critters in it that’s going to keep me running regular before I go running. Amazing. At 10:30 I had a major dilemma. I’d like to be lying in bed in the dark at that time, but I really wanted oatmeal. Like my breakfast, oatmeal won out.

When I woke up, I decided I wanted to do 10 on the treadmill this morning; it completely didn’t occur to me how nice it was outside until I ran the first 3 or so, during which time I was snacking on this:

Flash is not my friend but it’s dark at 7am. The gym was virtually empty; I think there were 6 other people throughout my entire time there, 1 of which being my “gym-friend”. She said “have a good day” and I said “take care”. I’m a stud muffin. I ran 10 miles in 83:11 and my feet were really feeling it towards the end but I’m glad I stuck it out. Speaking of muffins, this was a berry good breakfast:

I hope you’re picking up all these puns I’m putting down. I loved the berry/almond/vanilla combo of it all. This kefir is seriously good stuff. I don’t even know how jazzed I am to try other brands than this one, because it’s so perfectly thick and sweet without overdoing it. FYI, don’t be surprised at all if you see the exact same breakfast tomorrow.

I had a very “fun” surprise in store for today which I think we all would have gotten a kick out of. Amazingly, however, I won a contest to attend an amazing sounding dinner in Boston which I am much much more excited about. I don’t know exactly how getting there and all is going to work out just yet, but it’d take a lot to keep me from good food like this. Instead, I’ll save the other thing for tomorrow and take plenty of pictures tonight for you all.

Wowza(as my aunt would say), am I blessed to have so many great products to review, such as the honey vanilla bean Voskos I ate yesterday for breakfast. Good morning, good morning. Yesterday in Latin class after handing in my essay on Catullus 8 I was painfully reminded of a midterm in that class Friday. Uhmmm shit crap. Countdown 4 days to memorize the Latin vocab for many many dirty poetry words. Besides that the class was tolerable. My hunger was a bit raging after my half marathon run so I had to eat a loud, crunchy apple during class; I felt really awkward making so much noise but c’est la vie. Afterwards I decided for lunch I would not be wasteful and instead eat the other 1/2 can of tuna in my fridge. Problem? It kind of froze over the weekend. Yuck. Also my other apples had gone bad. Double yuck. Instead I salvaged some other left overs and made some more space:

I found the other half of my Trader Joe’s pilaf, which was still good and not-frozen(does anybody else remember when I heated the bag for this because I sure don’t). Along with some steamed broccoli it was a nice veggie entree. And to add a bit of protein, by which I mean I could marry this beloved combination, I had a pineapple Chobani with some Nature’s Path Organic Pumpkin Flax Granola. Holy shiz is that the bomb. I think I picked it up from Tina on Carrots N’ Cake; that’s one blogger who knows her food. Classes were a delightful snooze. My Greek History professor, who’s always quick to give his opinion, apparently considers The Simpsons as one of the best form of art in culture of any time. I can’t wait to see what that midterm’s like(jk, I totally can wait and would rather it weren’t next Friday). When I got out of Epic Poetry I had a great big box waiting for me:

The kind people at Clif sent me a box full of goodies. I contacted them after being in love with their Z-Bars for so long and realizing just what an extensive product line they have. Not only is their the original Clif Bars and Luna for woman(which, if you’re looking for reviews of, you’re looking at the wrong blog), but others including new MoJo bars and MoJo dipped. They sent me a medley of those and some of their new flavors, all of which I can’t wait to give a taste. If they’re anything like the Z-Bars, I’m going to be a very happy man.

The only other time I ran a half marathon was last Tuesday. If you remember from Wednesday’s post, I could hardly walk after that. Amazingly, I felt great yesterday all day long. So great in fact that I could walk the mile to Whole Foods to pick up two things I was absolutely craving:

I was seriously considering chugging a Zevia this morning with breakfast; unfortunately, I didn’t have this particular flavor which I wanted so bad. Thankfully I crave things that are on sale, so this 6-pack was only $4. The deli meat, as you will see, was for dinner. I love that at Whole Foods I don’t need to ask if the deli meat was treated with nitrates or what diet the turkeys were fed but can just eat it and feel good. For an Oprah worthy snack, I made oats:

When was the last time I had this combo? If I have to ask, I’m guessing the answer is far, far too long. This is another jar I’m almost out of; yippee for picking up $1 off coupons at home! Here’s to hoping it goes on sale somewhere so I can be really savvy. My work load has really picked up this week. I thought I had somehow dodged the Midterm bullet but apparently not. And since I consider blogging my “part-time job”, it’s not like I’ll be letting myself slack on that either. *Sigh* I think my perfect bubble of 7-8 hours of sleep a night, 1-2 hours running, and 1-2 hours walking/grocery shopping might take a hit this week. But I digress with this rant(isn’t that what blogging’s all about?). While I was catching up on reading, I came up with the perfect study snack:

The hamster in my mind was really running on his wheel for this one. I took a pack of gingerlicious cookies, mixed plain canned pumpkin with cinnamon and stevia, and mushed it between the two. This was just like a whoopie pie, except rung in at about 115 calories(aka, if I kept more gingerlicious cookies in my freezer than 1 pack, I would have ate a hell of a lot more of these). I didn’t need a big snack anyway because it was almost dinner. Despite the fact that I had pretty much the bulk of my meal I wanted to meet up with Adam at The Ratty to catch up:

The turkey was destined to be with the Trader Joe’s Cranberry Apple Butter. It’s almost identical in flavor to cranberry sauce and I’ll be sure to put a can on my Thanksgiving table. The broccoli I doused with tobasco sauce for something a little different. I honestly didn’t touch the carrots because they seemed over processed and oily. And the vegan chili was amazing. I almost regretted bringing my own main meal on a night when the vegetarian option was so good.

I read a bit of Hesiod’s Works And Days for my Epic Poetry Class. After learning a language, I feel like such a slacker reading anything in translation; that being said, the professor definitely didn’t assign this 800something line book in the original Greek and I was in no way, shape, or form prepared to read it like that. Apparently, Hesiod was the iron age where men toiled in labor for Zeus. I think that makes us the… Selenium age? What do they even use to make computers these days anyway? Midway through, while also “watching” Heroes, I answered to my name being called:

In all truthfulness, I did not want to eat this last night because eating it meant photoing it, thinking about it, and writing up this review. But it was definitely calling out to me for obvious reasons(I mean, just look at the flavor). So I totally gave in and it was definitely worth it. I suggest you read my full review which I’ll repost once I’ve had a chance to sample this all, but this bar has a lot going for it: salty/sweet, 70% organic, 1st ingredient being peanut, 9g protein, etc. Now I’m jazzed to try the rest. The rest of my night was lame, in a good way:

I made plenty of toast to eat up the bread in my fridge. I haven’t had the peanut butter cookie spread in too long. I can’t believe how many of you had never had cream cheese on a muffin; I’m not a bagel fan(that’s a whole other story) so I’ve made my peace with cream cheese on toast and muffins. Also, I love the combo of these vitatops and berry jams just as much as with peanut butters(yes, you read that right), especially when they aren’t too hot. Television for the night was decent comedy, but nothing spectacular. I’m now aware that I’ve moved on in my life from “Mom, do we have to watch the news?” to “Ooo, the 11 o’clock news is on, great now I can fall asleep to the headlines”. Life is a mysterious thing.

At 6:30 my roommate came home and went into his bed. I don’t know what’s worse: that he’s getting home at 6:30 or that I’m sometimes up by 6:30. Let’s call it a draw. It was definitely a drag-myself-out-of-bed morning, which I haven’t had in a while. Nonetheless I went to the gym and rocked out 8 miles in 65:52. It was most definitely an ipod assisted run. My gym friend, the 50+ year old woman who rocks it out on the treadmill with me, is back after being gone a few weeks–so exciting. I had the “I have early class but I want oatmeal” dilemma for breakfast. Oatmeal won out:

Isn’t it always the case that oatmeal wins out? This bowl was especially good with a heaping dose of vanilla powder and cinnamon. I also gave another Voskos yogurt a try, the Organic Plain Non Fat. I was sure to taste a little for review before adding peanut flour, vanilla stevia, and chocolate sunflower butter. This butter is so thick, it actually makes a really great addition to yogurt, almost like a granola. I love finding new ways to eat nut butter.

Despite it not being 10am, I can tell today will be an amazing day. First I walked next to a security card singing “it’s going to be a bright sunshiny day”. Then I found not 1 but 2 pennies heads up outside my dorm. And when I glanced at my emails I came across this:
