Let’s Make That Workout Happen

Posted on May 28, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update, Health | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Let’s face it: When you’re just out there running for fun, it’s a lot easier to get “bored” with running than if you’re motivated by a race, or weight loss, or have some crazy deal where you get paid per mile you run(If I had a deal like that, I’d be out there all day). The truth is it’s just hard to love a tough workout 100% of the time. Here is how I get workout-ready in my morning.

I always start the day with a big breakfast, workout or not. My perfect trifecta is oatmeal for fiberous carbs, peanut butter(cinnamon raisin swirl PB & Co. here) for healthy fat, and greek yogurt for protein. To be completely honest, I don’t love Greek yogurt here always; a lot of days I’d be happiest with 2 huge bowls of oatmeal and nut butter. But greek yogurt is a great source of probiotics and protein. And starting your day with protein has been shown to boost metabolism and curb you late-night hunger. I can certainly scoop some Fage for that.

When I know I’m about to run, I always steal some chocolate from my stash. Call it a bribe; it’s as natural as putting on my shoes. “Rituals” lie this can keep you on a regular exercising route.

Today, my workout motivation as music. I just downloaded Telephone(I know, I’m terribly behind) and Love On The Inside by Sugarland and made a big playlist out of them. I definitely couldn’t have gone so far without that energy pumping through me. For some, it’s music. Other times, it’s whatever’s on the TV at the gym. And, of course, there’s always the beautiful nature of the outdoors. Whatever it is, distractions can be some of the greatest ways to make a cardio workout enjoyable.

Afterwards, it’s important to hydrate. In fact, I plan this beforehand by sticking water and anything else I might want in the fridge and knowing just where it is to grab it to drink while doing stretches. Without stretches, the next workout might not be as enjoyable…

And, of course, you need to refuel. There was a lot of hype last Summer about chocolate milk being the “perfect drink”. Really, what you need is food. Drinking carbs is certainly one way to get energy back in to your system. That just doesn’t fit me, personally. For myself, I made a “dream salad”(as in, I dreamed this up all run long): Spinach, avocado with lemon juice, sauteed onions, and toasted cashews. If this doesn’t work for you, feel free to go back to the chocolate milk.

And it never hurts to have a little more running motivation. Sundae Friday, anyone?

No matter how difficult it is, there is nothing that tastes better than homemade ice cream. Can you see the vanilla bean specks and thick chunks of organic dark chocolate? Maybe I got hit by a car on my run and went to heaven and don’t know it yet.

Flash forward to 2 hours later when I hadn’t sat down at all and realized it was one of those 2-lunch days.  Now I’m relaxing with oatmeal and cashew butter and a pineapple Chobani. Glorious, no? I’ve been trying to churn up a real good dessert. It’s been a battle so far; we’ll see how it comes out tonight. We’ll see…

How do you stay motivated to work out?

The Fastest My Heart Has Ever Beat

Posted on May 21, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

I’m pretty much the textbook runner in a medical sense: low weight, low resting heart rate, low blood pressure, etc. Even when I “run”(more like jog), I’m not pushing it too hard to strain myself. But last night–well, first there was oatmeal.

Oatmeal With Mighty Maple

Oatmeal With Mighty Maple

Because warm carbs and Mighty Maple are a good way to start any time. So what made my heart beat so fast? Well, if you follow me on Twitter, I’m sure I annoyed you with my constant updating of the Grey’s Anatomy season finale. It was a good one. I’ve got it on Tivo and might watch it again. This was pretty much me the entire time:

Nervous

Nervous

And I was SO relieved at the end when they didn’t kill off anyone worth it. In the 2nd half, I’d say I needed this dark chocolate to pull through some of the scary moments.

Alter Eco And Trader Joe's Chocolate

Alter Eco And Trader Joe's Chocolate

That would be 10 squares Dark Chocolate Mint by Alter Eco, which is amazing, and 8 squares of Trader Joe’s knock-off chocolate which is “meh”. Dear Trader Joe, please stop making borderline infringing products that aren’t even as good. Like your milk chocolate peanut butter eggs that had hardly any peanut butter? Yeah, don’t do that again.

Well I made it through Grey’s, and got to bed eventually(which wasn’t easy). For the record, as ridiculous as I’m sure I appeared to everyone else around here, my dad walked into the room at 9:30, saw one shooting, and said he couldn’t handle it. So at least I watched it.

Maple Salmon, Soy Sauce Broccoli, Antipasto Bar Selection

BBQ Popchips

BBQ Popchips

Breakfast was, well, not. Oatmeal and yogurt weren’t on the top of my list so I decided to have “a real meal”. It might have all been an excuse to eat Barbeque popchips. Maybe. And now I feel like I’m missing that sweetness of breakfast. Boo 😦 Breakfast for lunch? That could be on the menu to make up for it.

What television shows do you get invested in? Do we have time to list all of mine? Grey’s Anatomy, Brothers & Sisters, and Big Brother, just to name a few.

All The Reasons I’m Screaming

Posted on May 12, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

It’s been a little loud around here today.

To-Do

To-Do

Frankly, there was no way all of this was getting put away today, and there might have been some swearing involved. 12 miles I could have done; this, not so much.

TJ's Temptation Trail Mix

TJ's Temptation Trail Mix

It took Trader Joe’s Temptation Trail Mix to calm me down. I don’t suppose it’s a temptation anymore after you give in.

I’m screaming in joy because today I officially finished up with my 3rd class but in agony because my fourth and last, while being 6 days away, I already feel unprepared for and as if it’s a waste of time to study(not like I’ve found the chance yet).

Meat And Potatoes Cooking

Meat And Potatoes Cooking

I could have screamed and yelled to tell everyone what an amazing cook I’ve become, but no one’s been home to listen. Of course, my dog will come running once he smells something cooking. Is it bad that he responds to “little shit”? My grandmother and I have got to get better about that…

Bison Medallion, Seared Sweet Potato And Onion Over Greens

Bison Medallion, Seared Sweet Potato And Onion Over Greens

Yum! I found an old bison medallion in the freeer to thaw and cook in a little EVOO with a roasted potato, onion, and fresh rosemary. How can anybody not look forward to fresh herbs?! They just add so much flavor.

I might have hollered a bit when I realized that some flavors of Celestial Seasonings contain gluten! Sleepytime Throat Tamer didn’t, however, and it said it would help my throat, which has been a little scratchy all day(probably from the screaming), so I thought I’d give it a taste.

Scratch Ticket

Scratch Ticket

I squealed a little when I won $5. It wasn’t much of a scream, but it made my day.

Mint Chip Coconut Milk Ice Cream

Mint Chip Coconut Milk Ice Cream

J’adore mint chip coconut milk So Delicious ice cream and I’ll shout it from the rooftop! It’s so minty and the touch of coconut oil chocolate adds a nice, cool crisp to it all. I also love that everyone else in this house won’t touch coconut milk ice cream. More for me.

Oatmeal With 365 Crunchy

Oatmeal With 365 Crunchy

It’s also cheaper to shout and bicker that it’s 48 degrees in May than turn up the heat. Why the unseasonable weather? Why? Warm oats, get inside my belly!

But what’s the real reason I’ve been screaming? Well…

Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker

Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker

I scream for ice cream makers! I got one a few weeks ago and it’s been waiting here ever since. Excited doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel about this; oh the possibilities! But that’s where you all come in. If you had an ice cream maker, what would your dream flavor be? Or, if you have any specific recipes from websites you like, please share! I’m a little wary of dealing with egg yolks to begin with, so now I’m just thinking of working with simple flavors/recipes. Hermit ice cream, maybe? 😉

DIY: Fancy Nut Butters

Posted on May 7, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update, Health, Recipe | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

If there’s one thing I love, it’s a good, flavorful nut butter. And I will happily fork up the cash for it(don’t assume I haven’t paid $10+ for a single jar). But that’s not always the most wallet friendly way to eat, even if the cost per serving is relatively low. And sometimes the flavors you want just aren’t out there. Or maybe they haven’t arrived at a store near you(Justin, I’m looking at you here). That’s when you need to know to make your own. With that, I’m happy to announce the newest additions to my recipe page: nut butters.

Chocolate Nut Butter

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon nut butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon sweetener
  • Vanilla flavoring

In a small dish, combine all ingredients and stir.

Cinnamon Raisin Almond Butter

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon almond butter
  • 1 tablespoon raisins
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon liquid sweetener
  • 1/2 teaspoon brown sugar

In a small dish, combine all ingredients and stir.

Cookie Dough Cashew Butter

Ingredients:

  • 1 and 1/3 tablespoons cashew butter
  • 1 teaspoon agave
  • 1/2 tablespoon chocolate chips
  • Vanilla flavoring

In a small dish, combine all ingredients and stir.

Vanilla Peanut Butter

Ingredients:

  • 1 and 1/3 tablespoon peanut butter
  • 2 teaspoons liquid sweetener
  • Vanilla flavoring

In a small dish, combine all ingredients and stir.

The benefit of all these recipes is that they use pantry-friendly ingredients and require no food processor. Of course, I also have recipes for nut butters that start from scratch. I’ll be sure to add those over the Summer(when my food processor isn’t stashed underneath my bed).

Ginger Green & Black's Chocolate And Dark Chocolate Mint Alter Eco

Ginger Green & Black's Chocolate And Dark Chocolate Mint Alter Eco

Otherwise, I’ve been eating chocolate still. Lots and lots of chocolate. Why choose between Green & Black’s ginger and Alter Eco’s dark chocolate mint when you can have both? Beats me.

Oatmeal With Vanilla Peanut Butter

Oatmeal With Vanilla Peanut Butter

And oatmeal with the aforementioned vanilla peanut butter. I don’t actually measure out the ingredients–I eyeball it based on how hungry I am. But I wanted to give those for a good starting point. Feel free to change it up to fit your taste!

1/2 Honest Foods Apple Ginger Bar

1/2 Honest Foods Apple Ginger Bar

And 1/2 of an Honest Foods apple ginger bar I found in the fridge when I was feeling snackish. This was SO GOOD heated up in the microwave; it became like the topping to an apple crisp–Yum!

This morning, the plan was to go to the gym first thing. But I wasn’t feeling it. New plan? Make cinnamon raisin almond butter.

Oatmeal With Cinnamon Raisin Almond Butter

Oatmeal With Cinnamon Raisin Almond Butter

Vanilla Siggi With Organic Raspberry Conserves

Vanilla Siggi With Organic Raspberry Conserves

If you haven’t tried siggi’s, well I can only tell you what you’re missing then. It is so smooth and creamy in texture, and the speckles of vanilla bean = pure love. But none of their flavors are sweet enough for me on their own 😦 Which might be OK if they had a little added fat to make them richer but they don’t. Fruit jam to the rescue(and a little almond butter snuck in their as well).

I hope you whip up some nut butter for your Cookie Friday. I’m sure a shmear of cinnamon raisin almond butter on this cookie would be perfect. Now I really must start my day! Lot’s of paper writing to do I’m actually looking forward to. What, what?

Shape Up RI Half Marathon Race Report

Posted on May 2, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update, Race Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

But first, I’m going to make you sit through the prefueling.

Mint Dark Chocolate And Raisins

Mint Dark Chocolate And Raisins

Oatmeal With Vanilla-Maple PB And Raisins

Oatmeal With Vanilla-Maple PB And Raisins

Not too exciting, except for the random raisin cravings. I think my body needs iron! I figured after a mostly vegan day that might be the case. As always, sleep was not easy on a Saturday night on campus; I woke up to loud music around 1am. Fortunately, I was tired enough to sleep through most of it and got 7 hours or so, waking up promptly at 6:30.

Amazing Grass Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Bar

Amazing Grass Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Bar

My pre-race “breakfast” was an Amazing Grass chocolate peanut butter protein bar. I chose this because it’s nutritionally dense and covers all the macro’s and micro’s well. It had agave nectar for slow burning energy peanut power for satiety.

Standing at the starting gate could not have felt more “real”. Looking around, seeing all the other runners and marathoners was definitely inspiring. Even though I promised myself not to feel any pressure to sign up for another race in the near future, this definitely got me on a high that had me thinking. And then the gun went off!

Rehydrating

Rehydrating

Miles 1-2: Its here! Its here! It’s really here! I was very excited to be running. And I had no clue how fast I was going because my Garmin kept bouncing between 8 and 6; I was just hoping the people I was with were running a reasonable pace.

Miles 3-4: Ugh. Providence is hilly! And the hills set in early. At least by this point I was on the part of the course that I used to run daily, so I knew the terrain like the back of my hand.

Miles 5-6: At the 5 mile marker, I was not on pace for meeting my goal. I really stepped it up and took the downhills like a madmen. Unfortunately, they changed the layout of the course so I was a bit confused where we were going; but I was going and going strong.

Crossing The Finish Line

Crossing The Finish Line

Miles 7-9: Do not underestimate the power of people cheering from the sidelines. I never felt more loved than at this stretch with all the spectators. At a time when my head was saying “You’re only half way there”, everyone else was cheering “Half-way, half-way!”

Miles 10-11: I always try to run strong, be composed, and keep a level-head. At this point, I told myself it was OK to fight, struggle, and swear, so long as I won in the end.

Miles 12-13.1: The last mile is always the easiest. There were signs and people everywhere, and at this point I knew I had my time even if I slowed down considerably. I crossed the line with an official time of 1:37:51 and grabbed the medal at the end with enthusiasm.

Hardware

Hardware

Overall: I could not hold my water today! I think I peed 5 times before the race, and had to again the entire time through. At the end, I was probably dehydrated because I didn’t drink a lick, but it all worked for me. That just goes to show how nervous I was. But I did it! I beat my goal. And I feel no pressure to run off and sign up for another one 🙂

My parents were at the finish line. I really had no plans for after the race but I decided to come home for the day(I really didn’t have the energy to do my own laundry, haha). I made a little breakfast for the car ride.

Oatmeal With Vanilla Peanut Butter

Oatmeal With Vanilla Peanut Butter

Cherry Fage With Trail Mix

Cherry Fage With Trail Mix

I have no clue what was in this trail mix, but it was delicious; I might have to go back and buy the whole bin. All I know is that the giant chocolate swirls were superb. And with the sweet cherry from the fage, it was definitely a magical pairing. I might have to get this again later on when I go back to RI to have for a dessert 🙂

I’m plenty happy being on my couch, reuniting with Tivoed shows(hello, Little People, Big World), and am about to fix that iron problem with something off the grill! Yum 🙂

Can I Petition A Petition?

Posted on May 1, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Happy Saturday! I for one am more than happy to be closer to Summer and living at home with a full kitchen and refrigerator. Have you all seen this petition yet? Basically, it’s a petition for Obama and his family to become vegans for their influence. Uhhh, what?! I fully support those who are vegans, or vegetarians. But how on earth could anyone want to dictate how another person eats? Especially when some of those are just little girls?

If I posted this when I first heard about it, I’d have some not-so-choice words, but I think by now my minds mulled it over to speak better of it. If anything, we should be preaching tolerance–tolerance of those who have a different way of thinking or path in life. This petition shows no more tolerance than the intolerance you could find against vegetarianism in a Southern cattle farm community. More importantly, you can eat ethically and aware without being a vegan, which is part of what Michelle Obama has already done through her time in the White House. What do you think of this petition? Besides that it’s going nowhere, I think it’s a little rude. And–as always–I’m on a mission to show you can eat well and ethically without devoting yourself to any label.

Naturally Nutty Vanilla Almond Butter

Naturally Nutty Vanilla Almond Butter

I had this little bowl of Naturally Nutty Vanilla Almond Butter and a scoop more before hitting the gym. What is it about almond butter that makes me just want to eat out of the jar?! It’s so delicious! Especially with a little vanilla. I felt extra fueled after that.

10 Miles In 88:59

10 Miles In 88:59

Fueled enough to runner a faster 10 miles as the last training run before my half-marathon. That feels weird to even think about. Enough, enough. Lunch!

Maple-Walnut Oil Salmon With Craisins And Golden Raisins, Baby Carrots, Hemp Oil Greens

Maple-Walnut Oil Salmon With Craisins And Golden Raisins, Baby Carrots, Hemp Oil Greens

Motivated by Kath, I’ve been getting in to canned salmon for extra omega-3’s without much fuss. I mixed mine with maple syrup and walnut oil for something packed with even more essential fats and tasty! Over the top was Tierra Farm‘s dried fruit and baby carrots, with salad dressed in Foods Alive hemp oil dressing.

Organic Red Delicious Apple

An organic apple for dessert!

Trilogy Synergy Kombucha

Trilogy Synergy Kombucha

On my way back from my grocery trip, I picked up a trilogy kombucha at a cafe because I felt a little down about the whole trip :-/ A lot of it was on the store’s sale, which was good. But I probably could have saved more in coupons if I was better organized. At least I didn’t blow the project cleanout challenge too much. And you can’t say I don’t eat what I buy:

Soy-Free, Dairy-Free Chocolate Sundae

Soy-Free, Dairy-Free Chocolate Sundae

Isn’t it dreamy? My whole point in going was to get some whipped cream to make a sundae. They didn’t even have regular–just non-fat sugar-free or Rice Whip, which is dairy and soy-free. The latter seemed less processed, so I went with that and made a sundae with So Delicious chocolate coconut milk ice cream. The fudge sauce was simply cocoa powder and agave nectar mixed together. Voila! OK–the Rice Whip tasted REALLY fake; if you’ve ever had rice milk, just imagine that in an airier form. Besides that, this Friday sundae was delicious and a perfect before-dinner treat 🙂

Grass-Fed Burger, Sweet Potato Fries With Mozzarella Daiya

Grass-Fed Burger, Sweet Potato Fries With Mozzarella Daiya

If Obama wants to eat his beef and have his vegan cheese, too, I fully support that! I made a 1/3 a pounder hamburger but undercooked it far too much 😦 I really wanted to try the daiya so instead of eating it straight from the bag I made some sort of vegan cheese fries–YUM. This was better than mozarella cheese; it was crack. I’d be lying if I said I’m not planning on having it again today(maybe twice).

Endangered Species Dark Chocolate With Deep Forest Mint

Endangered Species Dark Chocolate With Deep Forest Mint

I love mint. I could eat a salad made of mint leaves. This bar doesn’t have a great minty flavor like alter-eco’s mint bar. But it was what the Whole Foods I was at had, and I don’t terribly mind it.

Oatmeal With Chocolate Almond Butter And Coconut Milk

Oatmeal With Chocolate Almond Butter And Coconut Milk

And some oatmeal with homemade chocolate almond butter because nowhere near me carries Justin :-/ Oh well, now that I’ve pinned down the secret to making good homemade chocolate nut butters, I’m less enthused to go out and pay $10 for someone to do it for me.

This morning I woke up nice and early to not run. Maybe it defeats the purpose of a rest day to keep yourself from sleep. But I want to be nice and tired tonight so I can go to bed early and sneak 8 hours in somewhere before the race.

Oatmeal With Cookie Dough Peanut Butter

Oatmeal With Cookie Dough Peanut Butter

Cherry 2% Fage With Almonds

Cherry 2% Fage With Almonds

I love Fage, especially their cherry flavor. Unfortunately, it’s about expensive as they come around here. At least it’s on sale at Whole Foods this week. The cherry here tastes just like the cherry dips at Dairy Queen! Yum! Next time I’m trying full fat. The peanut butter–again, since I’ve figured out how to make cookie dough nut butter, I’m less enthused about paying someone to do it for me. Besides, this one seems really fake since half of it melts over oats and the other half is still solid :-/ Until it’s gone, though, I’ll live it up and enjoy it.

What are your thoughts on mint? I made my gluten free chocolate brownies with a lot of mint extract once and was told it was like mouthwash; hell, I thought they were great! The more mint, the better in my opinion. Even though it’s often paired with chocolate, I wouldn’t mind a dessert exclusively with mint as the flavor. Speaking of chocolate, here’s a Bubble Chocolate Giveaway. Now I get to go to my very first race expo! I hope it’s nifty.

Can Carob Compete?

Posted on April 30, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update, Health | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Before last night, I had never tried carob.

Mint Carob Bar

Mint Carob Bar

I had known about it for months now, and even have had this bar since November. Still, I hadn’t really tried carob, not because of what it is, but because of what it isn’t: chocolate. Carob has been marketed as “the new, healthy chocolate”. Hold the phone; what was wrong with our old chocolate? Chocolate-specifically cocoa powder which is found in higher concentrations in dark chocolate–can be packed with antioxidants. Dark chocolate only has fat from cocoa butter and relatively low added sugar. Carob, on the other hand, has no antioxidants and inherently more sugar than cocoa. The only advantage might come in its lack of caffeine, or for anyone allergic to chocolate(if you are, I am so so sorry you have to sit through 90% of what I eat). But how did it taste?

Mint Carob Bar

Mint Carob Bar

This certainly was sweeter than dark chocolate, and it’s hard to tell if that’s from a disproportionate amount of carob/cocoa powder or because carob naturally has higher sugar content. The texture was what threw me; this was rather chalky, and not at all smooth like my favorite dark chocolate. As for the benefits of carob, it’s easier to obtain in its raw state than cacao. It also boasts more calcium(or, in its case, calci-yum). I did like it, but I’m certainly not running out to buy carob powder or recommending it to anyone not allergic to chocolate(again, sorry!).

Baby Carrots And Broccoli

Baby Carrots And Broccoli

I also had healthy snacks like baby carrots and tiny broccoli florets. Actually, I ate this right after my dinner post. I love roasted broccoli, but it’s about 1/2 as filling as steamed broccoli, and 1/10 as filling as raw. Don’t get me wrong, though: The flavor is a thousand times better. Can you tell I’m good with numbers, particularly food math?

70% Dark Chocolate With Vanilla Peanut Butter

70% Dark Chocolate With Vanilla Peanut Butter

Like I said, chocolate is irreplaceable. The texture is smoother; the flavor is richer; and think of all those antioxidants! I enjoyed Endangered Species Organic Smooth Dark Chocolate with a shmear of 365 peanut butter sweetened by Madhava vanilla agave. The chocolate bar looks damaged because it was in my pocket all last Friday and got melted along the way, but it tasted delicious. And I was so happy Grey’s Anatomy was back new last night! That show has had me addicted since Season 1.

Oatmeal With Vanilla Peanut Butter

Oatmeal With Vanilla Peanut Butter

This morning I actually forced myself to sleep in until 8; otherwise I just wouldn’t have known what to do with myself. I muddled around/read blogs until I was hungry for breakfast. It was more of my non-chocolate addiction:365 peanut butter sweetened by Madhava vanilla agave. I have yet to see this agave in a store, but if I do I’m buying them out. And I’m sure the overall price is better than buying a fancy nut butter, since 365 only cost me $1(Get those Whole Deal coupons before they go!).

Plain Yogurt With Raspberry Conserves And Vanilla Almond Butter

Plain Yogurt With Raspberry Conserves And Vanilla Almond Butter

Of course, fancy nut butter will always be a part of my life, like vanilla almond butter from Naturally Nutty. I prefer things like nuts or trail mix on my yogurt so much more than granola; and I never have to think if it’s gluten-free or not!

Have you tried carob? Like it or not? It was fine, really; but it will never be a part of my life like chocolate is.

…But believe it or not I do fall under the “health food blogger category”. And now I’m excited to say I’ll be a featured publisher for that, too! Foodbuzz is releasing a special section devoted to healthy living and I’ve been accepted as a publisher! First of all, you can friend me and buzz my profile here. Of course, I’ll still be having the same fun and friendly blog. I’ll just be sure to emphasize on occasion a new healthy recipe(like banana goodness bread) or deeper info on a health-related topic(like how gluten affects me). And if you have a Foodbuzz account, please friend and buzz me! Of course, I’ll always be a chocolate reviewer at heart…

I think I’m on a ginger dark chocolate kick. After trying Green & Black’s last night, I had to see what Vivani had to offer. I liked their bar, but not quite as much. The ginger was perfect; I just wish there was a tad more of it. But the combination of ginger and dark chocolate is a new favorite in my book! It also seems that, in the time since Vivani sent me several of their bars to review, they’ve completely renewed their line; I’d be interested to see if they become more widely available now.

105 minutes later, I had gone 12 miles. The run wasn’t much more exciting than what was on TV, which was the Today Show. Have you heard of Sandra Bullock’s baby adoption and how they’re willing to work together through divorce to both be parents of Louis? That’s such a sweet and at the same time heartbreaking story; I still have secret hopes she’ll reconcile with Jesse James.

What “healthy” subjects would you like to see touched upon more? I’m all ears! And tonight I can’t wait to announce a blogging milestone. Until then, just click around a bit, read a few recipes to get us there quicker 😀

Ice Cream For A Cause

Posted on April 27, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Hello, hello! I feel like this weekend totally flew past me between the auction Friday night to Avery’s birthday party to now being back in my dorm room and attending classes again with little to no transition in between. When the flow goes, go with it!

Avocado Rubbed Kale, Sweet Chili Tofu And Peppers

Avocado Rubbed Kale, Sweet Chili Tofu And Peppers

We packed up the car last night and made it to the Whole Foods in Providence in record time. Of course, we hit up the salad bar while grabbing groceries. My plate had some avocado-rubbed kale, sweet chili tofu, and pepper strips. The tofu was to die for. I can’t begin to explain how crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside it was. And the sweet and heat balanced perfectly. I would have had more, except that wasn’t really my dinner…

Ice Cream Social

Ice Cream Social

As any Rhode Islander knows, there were massive floodings earlier in the month from a huge rainstorm that hit us. Businesses and houses were destroyed, and Whole Foods was holding an ice cream social to help raise money for those families. I can definitely get into ice cream for dinner for charity.

Vanilla Ice Cream Sundae With Chocolate Syrup, Whip Cream, And A Cherry

Vanilla Ice Cream Sundae With Chocolate Syrup, Whip Cream, And A Cherry

I was hoping they’d break out the fun and funky pints for this, but they just had 365 vanilla and chocolate :-/ I got vanilla ice cream with organic chocolate sauce, 365 whipped cream, and a natural maraschino cherry. Sundaes always taste better when someone else makes them for you with a heavy hand. The 365 vanilla is OK, but I’ve definitely branched out from dairy-based ice cream and have had better. Other fun finds(but not purchases) at Whole Foods were the new So Delicious flavors in stock and Daiya vegan cheese!

Red Delicious Apple

Red Delicious Apple

Endangered Species Dark Chocolate With Deep Forest Mint

Endangered Species Dark Chocolate With Deep Forest Mint

While working on some homework not-so-hard, I had the snack of champions: an apple, mint dark chocolate, and decaf coffee. Could I have had a little more sugar last night? It was all for a good cause–let’s keep that in mind. Last Summer I managed to switch from caffeine to decaf coffee; this year it’s been about weening off the stuff completely from the acidity, but I do have about a cup a day, which is probably an ideal balance of antioxidants and acidity. I don’t think I could/would give it up completely.

Oatmeal With An Egg And The Heat Is On PB

I couldn’t deal with more sugar before bed so I went the spicy route with The Heat Is On peanut butter and a savory Omega-3 egg. It might be hard to believe it through my sweet tooth and all, but I definitely could not go a day without a good deal of savoriness. Sometimes, my garlic tooth is just as big.

Pomegranate Chobani With Quinoa Dark Chocolate

Back to classes and rain meant back to runs first thing, so I woke up at 6:30 to squeeze an 8-miler in before class. Normally, dairy and protein wouldn’t work for me before a run. But it was all I was craving. And since I was going to run anyway, I thought why not have the damn pomegranate Chobani with Alter Eco dark chocolate quinoa.

10 Miles In 86:16

10 Miles In 86:16

Something must have worked, because I extended my run to 10 miles and ran at a 7mph pace. The best part was finding out through the news that the forecast for Sunday’s half-marathon is sunny and warm! Crossing my fingers…

Finally, for breakfast I was craving craisins. I just wish there was a bar called that so I could have known what to eat so much easier. I mixed Crofter’s Organic Europe jam in a plain chobani and topped with Tierra Farm‘s organic dried cranberries–holy yum were these soft and squishy! On the side I had oatmeal with another egg and some Teddie’s pb sweetened up a tad. In class I got bored and calculated that I ate around 50g of protein and all before lunch! Sure, you could just take 2 scoops of a powder and call it at that. But I love getting so much nourishment from real food.

Do you have any cooking goals? 2 of the things this weekend inspired me to do are 1) use my food processor to make more complex and delicious raw foods and 2) learn to fry tofu. An ironic pairing, no? Well, if things go my way today, I’ll be incorporating one of those into dinner… Is there anything you want to learn to do in the kitchen?

My 15 Miles Of Fame

One day it’s cheesecake for breakfast, and the next…

Divine Dark Mint Chocolate

Divine Dark Mint Chocolate

…it’s having 1/2 of a Divine Chocolate bar between breakfast and a snack before 10am. Uhhh, whoops? I think it’s easier for me to avoid chocolate than stop eating it. I’ll admit: I felt a little disgustingly full after this and had to wonder, “why?” but that made my workout all the better.

Walking Break

Walking Break

I ran 15 miles in 2 hours, 14 minutes, and 17 seconds. Twice I stopped, filled up a cup with water, and walked briskly. Normally this might bug me but when the temperature increases proper hydration is a must. It was long, sweaty, stinky, and–towards the end–boring, but all in all it felt easy. I actually only “planned” 10 miles, and then felt good enough for 13.1, and finally pushed it to 15. Don’t you love workouts like that? I still had more than enough energy to walk to get pick up kombucha and spinach for lunch.

As good as it feels to be able to run 15 miles, I’d have to say it feels better to love healthy foods. Seriously, I was all over this lunch. I dressed the spinach in Foods Alive‘s hemp oil Sweet & Sassy dressing, tossed about 2 servings of chickpeas with Navitas Naturalsmulberries and sea salt, and added beets(aka Nature’s red dye #40 candy) on the side. So sweet! Have I mentioned I could eat chickpeas ’til the [vegan] cows come home? I totally could.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Zing

Chocolate Peanut Butter Zing

During my 2nd class of the afternoon, I snacked on a chocolate peanut butter Zing Bar. As much as I love chocolate and peanut butter, I’m so so fussy about the actual combination of flavors. And this just didn’t do it for me :-/ The chocolate was nice and sweet, but the whey flavor was whey(hehe…) too strong in the peanut butter part and that was all I could taste. I did love that it had so much protein(13g) and healthy fats(10g); after finding out that I’m a fast oxidizer, I’ve definitely noted ways in my eating habits that would support that.

Red Delicious Apple

Red Delicious Apple

Waiting for dinner, I snacked on a red delicious apple from the dining hall. While I was running my 15 miles, they did a segment on The Today Show about what a “medium sized” apple is and how many calories are in that. Who has time to worry about the calories in an apple? Worry about how much is in a giant plate of pasta alfredo, not an apple…

Grass-Fed Burger With Sweet Potato Fries

Grass-Fed Burger With Sweet Potato Fries

I think I’ve had this same dinner every Wednesday night for weeks now(except last week because I was still sick), and it’ll never get old. I just love the sweet potato fries, although all these baked fries are giving me a craving for the real deal. A little EVOO is just not the same.

Food Inc is on PBS tonight at 9 across the country! Confession: I haven’t seen it yet! And I’m unsure whether I’m going to watch in preference to other shows(Modern Family). As I’ve made a point of, I support a real food movement, especially away from cruelty against animals. That being said, I’m not sure I want to see the cruelty. I also feel like I’ve gathered the main points from blog summaries. Have you seen Food Inc? What did you think, if so?

Ever wonder what or why those crystals form on ice cream? Read this article to find out more. Now, I believe my dearth of ice cream throughout the day calls for some serious catching up tonight between work, don’t you think?
