Things I need to do more often: Relax! But that’s not happening now, so let’s get into it.

Tips To Save

I’ve been wanting to bring this one up for a while. I get asked a lot “How do you save money on groceries?”. My answer is that there are tons of ways! You just need to tap into them!


1. Buy off-brand and do it yourself! These are two biggies anyone can do. If you trust a store brand, it’ll often be cheaper than the name ones. I buy a lot of Trader Joe products, which are almost a dollar off their competitors at normal price. I also try to buy the raw ingredients rather than premade/seasoned, which are always more expensive. And the best thing you can do is simply cook for yourself! You’ll save a lot more if you buy proteins and cook them than if you order them out.

If you’re asking yourself “what’s he going to do with a pound of beef in a dorm room?” I’m thinking the same question :-/


Yes, I do acknowledge my yogurt obsession, but this brings up 2 more tips.

2. Follow your favorite brands on Twitter. It sounds weird, but by doing this I won 12 Chobani in one of their contests, and you could too! It’s a great way to connect with your favorite brands. I tweet @So_Delicious all the time, and while it hasn’t won me anything so far, it’s really fun!

3. Store sales and coupons! I’m sure we all had mothers who sat at the table clipping coupons and reading circulars until the cows came home, right? Well, turns out she had a point! If you check, you’re favorite foods(like Oikos) just might be cheaper this week. And if you pair a $1 Oikos sale with a $1 off Oikos coupon from the circulars, that’s a freebie right there!


4. Fan Your Favorite Companies. Similar to tweeting, email and Facebook are two great ways to stay up to date with your favorite company, and they often help you right back! In this picture, I managed a free bag of Popchips because I get their e-newsletters, and 2 free Nature’s Path products because I won a fan contest on Facebook by being their friend. It does pay to be friendly!

Almost Empty Smart Balance Peanut Butter

While I was home yesterday, I grabbed this out of our pantry. Who takes almost empty things just to use them once and throw them away? Apparently, me!

I also seriously felt like I needed protein, since I had so little all day. I added an Oikos in to put my mind at ease. Does anyone else make the oats in a bowl, and then add them to the jar? I just don’t really trust microwaving that plastic for 2 minutes. Also, for good measure, there was Trader Joe’s chocolate chips involved. There always are 🙂

Last night I could not sleep for the life of me. I think the attendant at McDonalds gave me real coffee instead of decaf at 6pm, which threw me off for the night! I tried to get sleepy; I shut down everything but the TV at 10. But then 11 rolled around, and I was up. And then 11:30. Finally, I had a snack.

I’m not saying something as carby as this bar is good at 11:30 when you can’t sleep. But it did hit a certain spot, and was free because of the Nature’s Path Facebook coupon, so left me with good conscious. The flavor reminded me of anything and everything toted as “frosted” from my childhood. And I was a little disappointed that even the seeds weren’t hard anymore but rather chewy. Anyway, I don’t think I actually fell asleep until after 12:30, which definitely P.ed me O, if only because there’s so much I could have done with that amount of time, and I knew I had a long run in the morning.

10 Miles in 89:51

I’ll start with what matters: I did it! Woohoo! The first time I hit 10 miles on the treadmill I remember needing a movie to keep me going. Well, this time I had The Today Show. I tried to get their early to dominate the TV’s but most of the ‘mills were taken by 7am! Let the competition begin. I felt a little lagging half way through, but then a gym friend showed up, and we talked about the opening ceremonies and not being able to be awake for the whole thing, haha. The time was a little slower than I’d like–a 9:00min/mile pace. But hopefully I’ll get speedier once I get more used to these distances.

It’s also been a rather slow(but busy!) morning; I took 60 minutes between getting of the treadmill to do everything I had to do before sitting down to a breakfast. Time gap much? I pulled out these new seeds for some optimum nutrition and worked them in to some favorite foods.

Clearly, when I get on a theme, I get on it. I had a somewhat obligatory bowl of oatmeal with pepita sun butter from Naturally Nutty. Since that has pumpkin, flax, and hemp, naturally my yogurt should follow suit, right? It was a glorious reunion with soy yogurt after a week of being out of it! It was nice and sweet, which gave good contrast for the pumpkin seeds and hulled hemp. I guess overall it was a pretty seedy breakfast 😉

Back On Track

I tried this last week and liked where it got me! But then some things took a downturn over the weekend, so here’s to me getting back on track.

1. Meal plans. In short, I need to make them. They may not be necessary, but they make life so much simpler, especially on work days, so why not? Any ideas for all that beef? I have a few, but I’d love to hear what you can come up with!

2. Planned Runs. Last week I hit my running goals spot on, and I hope the same for this week! Mon: 10. Tues: 5. Wed: 10. Thu: 7. Fri: 8. Those are the goals, at least.

3. Protein & Fat. I feel like I was doing so well at incorporating more protein and fat and then–what happened? Over the weekend was beans and chips and oatmeal–oh my! Hopefully, this one will come naturally if I stick to number 1 and number 4…

4. Eat Nutrition! I don’t mean to demonize carbs, I really don’t. But the fact is that heavy carb items–sugar, oatmeal, starchy vegetables–are also usually not as nutrient dense as light vegetables, seeds, nuts, and proteins. I was not a fan of Thrive by Brendan Brazier, but one point that stuck out to me was that he went from eating 8000 calories of starchy, white foods a day to 2000 of nutrient-rich ones and became 10 times better in what he does.

5. Work First, Internet Later. This is more of a one-day goal, specifically today! I have a HUGE to-do list before the week starts up, and anything beyond my inbox just does not need to be addressed soon I figure. So for now, it’s work work work!

Playing Blogger Catchup

Sometimes the day after Christmas can be just as exciting as the real thing itself. I started like any teenage boy the day after a present haul: playing my new wii game for an hour. Thank God for no responsibilities 🙂 By 8 at least I wasn’t the only one up so I started getting things done. Eventually, I worked up a breakfast that would get things out of the house.

Pumpkin Oatmeal In A Mighty Maple Jar With Monkey Boy Peanut Butter

I think that’s going to be a theme this week: eating to make room. We have so many leftovers! I secretly love it 🙂 The brownies and yogurt was so so good; I love chocolate mint and that creamy texture so much. And since the yogurt was sweetened with stevia and the brownie erithrytol it was all naturally low sugar, too(ergo I could make out this was a “healthy” breakfast. The oats in a jar were long awaited and a perfect touch. I had hoped on getting out, cashing some checks, and doing shopping before lunch but I’m definitely the faster movie in this house and that did not end up happening. Instead, I made a breakfast of comfort foods.

I may have steamed the asparagus too long, but they were still nice. The spoon roast really had to be eaten a few days ago and for some reason I had steak and mac n’ cheese in my mind. The best thing about a kitchen scale is definitely being able to portion out individual servings of the instant stuff from a family size box before cooking it(because, if I made the thing, I could definitely put it all away, too :-)).

Eventually, we did get rolling. First up was Target to use up some gift certificates. Did anybody else get a singing one from Target? They’re cute, but they’re about 1/2 an inch thick. And I got 3 of them. Can you imagine the wallet disaster that is? I was able to use up 2 and transfer what remained on the last one to a normal gift card. After that we went to the mall to return some stuff where I only was able to score more gift certificates 😦 And then to Macy’s to exchange my mini food processor for this.

I think I hit upon a mac daddy of food processors! It ended up costing me $43 more but I think it will be entirely worth it. Banana soft serve, chocolate avocado pudding, raw cashew cookies, my own nut butters! Really–this is opening doors. After that I grabbed a quick drink.

And then we were off to Whole Foods. I asked for chocolate for Christmas but not a single square wound up in my stocking 😦 I planned on getting a milk chocolate bacon bar which I’ve been wanting to splurge on since the Summer but they were all out 😦 😦 I’m sure I’ll find it next time because the man said he’d order some for me(though I’ll probably just go to a different Whole Foods that I know always carries them).

I grabbed my favorite “candy bar”. Seriously–these are too good to be healthy. When I got home it was time to put away my new “toys”(though I bet I’ll be breaking the food processor out pretty soon to play with).

From Target I got some things on my Christmas list: a new shirt to wear/run in, chocolate, and I Love Lucy on DVD. I don’t know why, but lately I’ve been so aware that this show is never on TV anymore! Shame because it’s the best, don’t you agree?

My mom decided she needed to get out of the house for dinner. I decided I needed to stay in and eat “my food” for the first time in days. It all worked out and I got the run of the house for myself to play with. Naturally, I decided to turn to the oven and eat a meal probably no one would care about that they missed but me.

There was definitely more maple syrup present here than at most breakfast tables because it was in the pie, on top, and all over the tofu. Scrumptious 🙂 I loved the real baked tofu; it’s 10 times more flavorful than the microwave. Unfortunately the back of the fridge froze the other half of my container and that got thrown away. And for “dessert” I had quick leftovers.

Which were perfect with a little dessert fork. Tiny utensils are just the best. Christmas definitely threw me off because I had no idea it was Saturday night. But nothing ended up being on TV anyway 😦 Instead of pop in a movie I waited for parents to get home and watched Days, followed by more dessert.

I don’t even know how much cocoa powder and hand mixing it took to get soy yogurt that color and smooth but it was A LOT. I’ll definitely stick with plain chocolate yogurt from now on because of that and reserve soy yogurt for simpler things. These cookies still taste as good as ever. After this I was stuffed but had a HUGE craving for pecans, which I never get.

This definitely put me over the top of fullness. But ’tis the season, right 😉 I can’t wait to make my own pecan butter with my food processor! I was actually planning on doing that at night, except I didn’t have any pecans… Definitely an ingredient fail.

This morning I had no motivation for anything. I stayed in bed for 40 minutes after looking outside to see the rain washed away most of the snow. Yuck. But when I felt guilty about not wanting to be active, I just kept in mind that they’ll be plenty of time for that in the future, and a day or a week or a month of pure laziness and joy should be well warranted.

Also well warranted would be repeating the same yogurt from yesterday because it’s “healthy” and delicious and uses up leftovers. Can’t beat that logic, can you 😉 I think I need to get to making eggs the proper way again while I’m home but for the morning I like my oatmeal so this was a compromise. And now, of course, I’m looking for recipes to make with my new food processor and muffin top tins. If you have any at all, send them my way.

Parting Is Such Tasty Sorrow

*Edit: I just had an amazing time. My voice is absolutely hoarse. I was planning on posting a full recap tomorrow right before my first final but I am positively beat and thinking there’s no reason to rush things so I’ll just post what I prewrote now and fill in the rest of the deets sometime after lunch tomorrow. G’night!*

“Now that I’ve blogged, I’ve really done everything I could besides write this paper, so I’ll work on that.”

I’m such a liar; what I really meant was that I’d done everything except go and check my mail and pick up the closet key I’ll need for when I’m booted out of the dorm for winter. And because the campus convenience is in the mailroom, what I really needed was some liquid warmth.

Since they always have decaf and not always this tea, I thought I’d opt for it instead. I liked it more when I had it Friday but I think that’s because I sweetened it with NuNatural’s packets which are better but I think gone from my stash. Of course, tea required some tea cookies. I’ve never had a Biscoff because I think someone very entertaining on the blogosphere has eaten them all but I do have these:

I hate it when I like a store bought cookie better than my own. Then again, I don’t douse mine with white chocolate fudge. Maybe that’s my problem? I’d like to see this Trader Joe; I can’t imagine him being in good shape if he’s around all his incredible food all day long. I worked on the paper a bit until I realized cookies were not the foundation of a good diet and had a more nutritious snack. Look what I found:

Is there anything more joyous and depressing than an almost empty jar? Well I suppose one that’s made by this Michigan based company 1500 miles away is a tad bit more saddening 😦 But I tried to look just at the positive memories and joy this has and was about to bring me.

Also the last vegan pumpkin molasses cookie; what a momentous bowl. I threw on 1/2 a tablespoon of peanut butter chips because you have to have peanut butter on top, right? And I don’t make enough excuses to use up those things 🙂 I think I must have looked silly in the bathroom cleaning out my jar after this but I wanted to save the jar for decor, haha. There was more work blog reading work where I rethought 1/2 of my thesis and some of the work I’d done. Don’t think. Just write. For dinner I had plans to eat it up with Adam at the dining hall but I had cancelled those in the morning so that I could keep working and then go out after dinner.

Have I discovered the magic way to make lentils in a microwave? Sadly, no. I asked the mother to cook up a big batch before I left Sunday and she did. Now I have a bowl I can scoop, heat, and serve. It had been wayyyy too long since snobby joes, so this meal was perfect. For a side I heated up 1/2 a sweet potato with some dining hall veggies and added Seeds Of Change simmer sauce. This meal was so saucy and vegrific–fantastic! And that’s where I was until 7:30 when I stepped out for a time-honored Brown tradition. What is it, you ask? I’ll leave that hanging. But there was a perdricem in piro involved 😉

I’ve Got A Hot Dog

This is what he looks like 2 minutes after waking up. If you wait 3 minutes you’ll find him back asleep again. That’s pretty much what he does. Everybody left the house leaving me to wait around until lunch. It feels like this house lacks “real food” whenever I’m gone. That’s why I pack an entire shopping bag full. See? I’m smart–food smart 🙂

I listened to the back of my Lightlife tempeh box which says it’s best grilled and skewered some BBQ tempeh. I loved the smoky flavor that it gave it and nuttier texture, but I still don’t know that the BBQ flavor came out. The broccoli was for the green(or maybe just an excuse to eat hickory smoked goat cheese). And the Chobani was a bit of early dessert. Even though I had the thought “I could be having ice cream instead of this” I chose the yogurt; what has happened to me? Clearly, that granola has a bit of flax and a bit of crack. Immediately after lunch we got on with the afternoon festivities…

Apple picking! Would you believe every Saturday so far this season I’ve came home has been rainy? It was windy, but not a raincloud around, so we hit up Tougas Farms for their final weekend. The trees were pretty picked but we made do.

Naturally, one snuck in my mouth on the walk out. I forget which type this was but I had an Empire; it was very nice and crisp and reminded me of a less sweet and visually attractive Red Delicious. After that we went to Target in search of some elusive Archer Farm’s Vanilla Cranberry Peanut Butter. Alas! No luck 😦 Next up was Hannafords for some general baking and eating goodies before heading to Micky-D’s(for a coffee, of course) and home. Here was the loot of the odyssey.



Greek yogurt–obvs–, Organic PB cups for an Evan Halloween :-), pumpkin, oats, apple butter, soy milk, tofu, and organic Smart Balance butter. I didn’t want to spring for the organic but the regular stuff apparently has artificial flavor. What are they flavoring it? Just like I don’t like butter, I don’t like fake butters either. But I know they’re necessary for a certain recipe I was thinking of making so I sucked it up and tried not to touch it too much. I was also pretty hungry and in need of a little mood booster, so I busted out the last of my old Smart Balance peanut butter.

And then all was right with the world 🙂 I don’t think any of my other jars are quite close to being finished, so I really savored this one. I tried catching up on Tivo and some homework but I got distracted and needed to try out a recipe

Vegan Pumpkin Brownies


  • 2/3 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 15oz can pumpkin
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup soy milk
  • 1/4 cup pumpkin butter

Pumpkin Brownies With Pumpkin Butter

Preheat your oven to 350. In a bowl, sift together the first 5 ingredients. Add in the pumpkin, soy milk, and vanilla and mix well. The batter will be thick. Spread into an 8×8 pan. Scoop pumpkin butter into a ziploc bag and snip off one end. In lines, squeeze the pumpkin butter. Then, with a knife, alternate cutting motions in both directions to make an effect. Bake for 25-30 minutes.

If you love fudgy brownies, these are definitely the ones for you. They didn’t even taste like a pastry but more like solid packed pumpkin and chocolate. I used too little sugar and baking powder, but I adjusted the recipe accordingly so hopefully yours will come out a bit more flavorful. Be sure to tell me if anyone tries these 😀 This was a nice appetizer for dinner.

A dinner, by the way, that was eaten spread over 30 minutes of being on the couch translating latin and running to answer kids at the door. I wasn’t feeling salmon. I feel like there’s an expectation for me always to want salmon or some meat when I come home, but that’s just not true. I tried introducing some alternative protein to the meal with grilled tofu. I liked the Nasoya firm better than what’s at my dining hall, so I might be adding it to the shopping list from now on, but I think it was too firm; when I reach for the ‘fu, I want something mushy and funky. There was also this humongous apple:

It’s hard to tell, but this was big(TWSS). I ate it quick and sloppily just so that I wouldn’t have to feel hungry running back and forth to the door! God that gets annoying, and is so unfruitful. Next year I’m hitting the streets again. At least that way you get candy for your work. Now I just need to find an organic street… I did have a partner in answering the door:

I told you I had a hot dog. He didn’t actually fit in his costume so we just held and threw it over when people came to the door. We didn’t get too many visitors, which my mom was very pleased with since that left her with a good amount of candy for herself.

Would it have been Halloween if I didn’t buts into a little candy? Clearly not. This was actually an educational experience. I learned a) when it comes to peanut butter and chocolate, milk is the way to go. I would have thought dark because in general I love that way more than milk but it just works with the peanut butter. Also, b) candy is better on top of yogurt. It feels like a sundae. I wonder if organic coated candies leak organic coloring like M&M’s do. That’d be sweet. c) Vanilla soy yogurt actually tastes like vanilla. Unfortunately, this boy likes his soy yogurt to be as funky as tofu, so it was a bit of a letdown 😦

Vanilla Cranberry was clearly the flavor obsession of the night. I was a little disappointed I couldn’t get the Vanilla Cranberry peanut butter 😦 Word from the foodie is that it’s in Woburn but that’s a good hour in the wrong direction for me. I’ll find it yet. I don’t even remember when I baked my last batch of those scones; I love finding pastries hidden in the freezer. I think I need a spare freezer just for english muffins because they never seem to be where I want them.

Did anybody else feel that extra hour? I woke up at 8 7 and felt both well rested and not lazy. That was nice. Instead of hitting the streets, I hit the kitchen. I’ll save what I whipped up and my breakfast for the next post 😉

A Normal Morning Is A Good Morning

Yesterday was dark and pooring. All day. Warning: There was a lot of flash necessary in the making of this post. Eating a larger than usual breakfast later than usual did not have me very hungry after Latin class. Unfortunate because that’s my hour to eat. I perused the Farmers’ Market and found some acorn squash but my food budget for the rest of October is 92 cents so I passed on it all and went for the free stuff in the dining hall.

I ate this in Greek History class. Or rather, I ate the soup and the over oily vegetables. I didn’t even bother with the tofu; apparently, if it’s not drenched in maple and mustard, it’s not appealing to me. The veggies in their oily mess were bad enough as was. Greek History class was so boring I almost fell asleep in the last 5 minutes. We had a TA teaching the lesson; the regular professor may be stubborn and opinionated but he’s entertaining. When I got out of class I needed to grab this:

Despite the fact that my next class was in the opposite direction, I rushed to my dorm to grab this and then ran to class. Don’t ask me why, but after that failure of a lunch I was craving something sweet and carbonated. If I didn’t have these babies I might have been weak enough to go for a diet Sprite. The next class was slightly better, but when half the students fail to show up you feel a little suckered. Obviously no one wants to go to class in a deluge but we do.

The rest of the afternoon honestly had me wanting to just call my mom and beg her to bring me home for the night or at least dinner. I was soaking wet, and my roommate was napping. Apparently, he caught streptococcus. Our room smelled awful, like a nursing home, where I volunteered 2 hours a week for 3 months last year so I would no. I couldn’t turn on the lights because I didn’t want to wake him, so I resorted to making oats in the dark.

Is there anything more calming than a big bowl of oats? Maybe ones with chocolate and maple syrup. Those two flavors are dynamite in this New Englander’s heart. How has nobody made a maple chocolate bar? I ate this in the dark watching Oprah with no sound. Did I mention how much I wanted to call my mommy? I also had the great pleasure to do homework in the dark, because Ancient Greek letters aren’t easy enough to read in the light. My roommate finally woke up at 5:30, by which point my eyes felt like a mole person’s when the lights came on. I made a snack to hold me over for dinner.

Probiotics are supposed to help against illnesses so I was thinking this would help be not get strep throat(or I was thinking, damn that’ll be good). At 6:27 my friend called to say essentially ditch me for our dinner at 6:30. If this was a few hours earlier, I wouldn’t have minded in the least(I was half planning on ditching him because I knew I’d be a Debby Downer at dinner). But 3 minutes early was just annoying; think of all the extra time I could have spent in my pajamas! I went to the dining hall and picked up dinner, went back to my room, got undressed for the night obscenely early, and ate.

This was exactly what I needed. I felt healthier and more myself with every bite. All the veggies tasted fresh and crisp, which only happens about 20% of the time with the dining hall. What was actually on the line was Sole stuffed with spinach and breading. I’m not a stuffing person(except for Whole Foods stuffing which is incredible and almost back!) so I took 2 and unstuffed them. The whole dish felt nice and light. If I were in the mood for some carby carbs Trader Joe Mac N’ Cheese would have gone well here, but I needed this meal just as it was.

I know I wasn’t the only one excited by The Charlie Brown Halloween Special on last night. Don’t lie. I’m such a sucker for the seasonal shows. I could honestly watch It’s A Wonderful Life again and again. The downside of a light dinner is that you’re hungry not too long later. The upside is dessert’s what’s best anyway.

Having a sick roommate, I need to bolster my immune system with these amazing cookies, right? Goji berries are my excuse for everything. But seriously this was soooo good. Like a brownie sundae or something ridiculous. Modern Family was equally hilarious last night: “I am loose. I am fun. Remember breakfast for dinner last week? My idea.” and my favorite “Mitchell, she is your family; of course she’s going to be judgmental and condescending.” We need as many shows to show us how crazy and dysfunctional we are as we can get; why did Everybody Love’s Raymond go off the air?

Toast With Cream Cheese And TJ Pumpkin Butter

Not really toast because I was too lazy to bust out the toaster at 10:50, this was eaten in bed and then promptly put me to sleep, because I’m classy like that.

Nothing remarkable happened this morning, and that felt great. I rolled out of bed at 6:50, still felt full from dinner dessert, and hit the gym, just like ol’ times. I ran a nice 8 miles in 67:25 while watching the usual shows and studying up for my history midterm tomorrow(my tiny handwriting isn’t exactly easy to read in motion, either). Because I was so on top of everything, I got back to my room at 8:30, giving me 2 full hours before class. I even was the first person to the showers!(aka, I didn’t have to smell the remnants of the hockey player who lives 3 doors down. What could be more glorious than this normalcy, you ask?

Breakfast was a conglomerate of super foods.

Goji Gourmet's Goji Orange MintChip Cookies, Attune Coffee Bean Dark Chocolate Bar

I didn’t actually feel like yogurt this morning(I know, shocker, right?) but I still wanted to get my probiotics so I snatched this attune bar from Attune Foods. I think that’s technically a breakfast food even though it’s chocolate because it has coffee in it. And it’s definitely a super food with the antioxidants from dark chocolate; can’t really prove me wrong with that logic 😉 I also tried a new flavor of Goji Gourmet‘s cookies. I was a little worried this one would have a muddled flavor with everything going on but oh my God was it good. Somehow you totally got the mint, goji, orange, and chocolate essence in every bite. Yum! Now I feel invincible from the germs lurking about.

Today I’m thinking of enjoying the not rain with a trip to Whole Foods and Eastside Market to see the new sales. I have 92 cents left in my food budget for October… We’ll see how that goes.

A Trip Well Worth It

So I entirely thought I posted this at 9am. Guess not. Here was my life up until that point, if ya’ll still interested(and yes, there was froyo ;-))

If there’s one thing I hate it’s being behind and/or rushed in the morning. So you can imagine how I was feeling about running 90 minutes later than normal, for a longer time than normal, and expecting to be picked up before lunch–Go, go, go! That’s another good thing about muffins for breakfast: they move with you better than oatmeal. Despite the pandemonium, I had breakfast in me and was out of the dorm by noon. On the way home we stopped at Whole Foods to get something for dinner as well as lunch. My dad didn’t think I’d be hungry after having just shoveled a muffin and yogurt down. Really? Me? Of course I was up for attacking the food bar. If anything I dislike how many choices there are because I could be there for ages reading every sign, but in the end I stuck with something simple:

Someone please remind me the last time I had sushi? I’m sure it’s on the blog, but it’d definitely be more than a month back. Let’s not let that happen again, k? I forgot how good slightly sweetened rice and soy sauce(aka liquid salt :-)) could be with a little fish. The fish was actually one of the weirder parts; the first 4 pieces were nice and soft but the last few were a bit tough and chewy. I mean, it is supermarket sushi after all, so I don’t know how great I was expecting. I also love eating the ginger straight. Anybody else do that? The tofu was decent but I wasn’t feeling anything fried at the time so I passed those off to my dad.

When I got home I was literally dropped off and left to my lonesome; my dog had a haircut appointment so I had mi casa to myself. First I discovered this in the cupboard:

Remember how disappointed I was when I couldn’t find the caramel sauce I put back at the Dedham Whole Foods? Someone in my family who reads the blog took the hint and was so nice enough as to pick this up when he saw it 🙂 How sweet. I love me some good caramel/apple/peanut butter action and this has just 4 simple ingredients so it’s basically a necessity for the Fall. I also found this in the fridge:

Last month I won a contest at Heather Bakes for one of every flavor of Chobani and it finally arrived this Friday. When I opened it, it wasn’t quite 1 of every flavor; there were about 9 or so with some missing and some duplicates. But that’s ok because there were 2 pineapple flavors which are my favorite. I can’t wait to bring these back to the dorm. 9 yogurts will last me… through Wednesday, haha. After finding all this I got down to business.

You must have seen this coming, right? I mean, a whole freezer loaded with ice cream without the potential of it being stolen. And, c’mon, it’s me 🙂 I love the chocolate because it tastes almost fudgey. It has so much cocoa powder in it it has 2 grams of fiber per serving. Ridiculous much? Ok, well that was off the to-do list

Priority number 2: Bake

Again, how could I not? And I knew just the perfect recipe. Holly, Miss Everythingtarian, came up with the most amazing sounding Vegan Pumpkin Molasses Cookies, recipe here. Done drooling? K, good. I altered the recipe slightly by dropping the canola oil to 1/4 cup and sugar to 1/2 cup. Apparently, Holly doesn’t just make recipes that taste great, but she makes recipes that come out looking amazing too. Check out these beauties:

Amazing. I might have gone a little overboard on the rolling of dough in sugar so that it all evened out in the end. Oh, and with the spices, too. Has anybody actually measured those out, ever? Didn’t think so. The moment these came out, the house filled up with people again. Here was my dog, sans hair:



He’s a bit of a hell raiser so they don’t try to do something fancy to him, just shave him down. I think it makes him look like a rodent–a cute rodent only an owner can love. He was not getting a cookie, but I was:

I only used 30g oats and 1/3 cup pumpkin because I figured the rest would be in the cookie. This recipe absolutely knocked my socks off. It’s healthy yet absolutely sweet and delicious, and nice and soft and chewy like I like my cookies. Have I gushed about these enough? Didn’t think so. I’ll continue to do so through the week. My hats off to Holly, who in all this craziness I forgot to mention is running a marathon this weekend. She does it all, folks. I caught up with a lot of house flipping and cake acing with my Tivo, and even managed a little(just a little) homework in all of that. Soon enough it was dinner time:

Believe it or not, I did fundamentally want salmon tonight for some reason. I feel like having the same thing every time I come home is a bit boring. HOWEVER, it was still on sale, and no one in this family can deny a bargain, so salmon it was. And I certainly can’t say I was complaining, especially with a little Trader Joe Island Soyaki sauce on the plate. We were actually supposed to have Trader Joe basmatti rice to go along with this but after it cooked it was not appetizing to me. Strange because I’ve had their boxed basmatti rice before and really liked it. Thankfully, the corn in the microwave method was a quick sub-in.

Last night’s primetime TV was a little down if you ask me. Food Network had a marathon of The Next Iron Chef, which I’d never seen before but wasn’t terribly exciting since I could predict Michael Symon being the winner. Instead I had a little excitement with food.

Vanilla 🙂 Doesn’t get more exciting than that? I just love this vanilla because it actually tastes like there’s something to it. And when it melts and you like it it’s reminiscent of a vanilla milkshake from a Johnny Rockets or somewhere–so good.

I really enjoyed that yogurt from this morning and felt like I ate it way too fast so I wanted to enjoy it again. I didn’t even do anything with the muffin top this time; I just chopped off the butt, stuck it in the microwave, and crumbled it into my yogurt. Again, delicious. It tastes just like carrot cake yogurt. Got any muffin butts you don’t want? I’ll take them off your hands. I tried watching TV shows online but I think Google Chrome has made my internet run a little slower lately. Anyone else experiencing this? Ah well, I had an english muffin with some spread overload to top it off while the computer wasn’t working.

I was planning on making a nice cookie spread but nothing appealed to me except the cookie dough peanut butter so I just added a bit extra of that and called it a night. I know it wasn’t even a full 2 tablespoons, but it felt like a ton since the surface area of the english muffin was so small; I swear I had full mouthfuls of peanut butter–not complaining. The cream cheese was Archer Farm’s Brand so I think it must have been all natural? All I know is it had a ton of confusing ingredients and didn’t agree with my stomach 100% but was pretty damn delicious.

This morning I fully planned for it to be raining and for me to be forced for into a rest day; I was a little confused when my planning for rain didn’t happen. What I don’t have that power? I thought it over and decided to take the rest day anyway even though I could have got some good running on my home streets. Instead I did what Sunday morning’s best for: circulars and breakfast.

My first experience with oats in a jar a few months ago didn’t go so well, but this time it was perfect. The jar was just the right size to be overflowing with oats, and I think there was just the right amount of peanut butter left. I had left this behind when I went off to college in September for my dad to try and he actually liked it so much he ordered his own, bigger jar. That’s only proof that anyone who tastes this just falls in love with it. I also had one of the pineapple Chobani I won to round it off.

Now I’m sitting here, catching up on last nights SNL. Was it just me or did the Philips Family Feud sketch fall a little flat and was in bad taste? Ryan Reynolds is a pretty funny guy, but I don’t know that he’s a sketch comedy person.  I’m sure I should work on my first essay of the year *shudder* but the sun’s peaking out so a walk might be in order.
