But first, I’m going to make you sit through the prefueling.

Mint Dark Chocolate And Raisins

Mint Dark Chocolate And Raisins

Oatmeal With Vanilla-Maple PB And Raisins

Oatmeal With Vanilla-Maple PB And Raisins

Not too exciting, except for the random raisin cravings. I think my body needs iron! I figured after a mostly vegan day that might be the case. As always, sleep was not easy on a Saturday night on campus; I woke up to loud music around 1am. Fortunately, I was tired enough to sleep through most of it and got 7 hours or so, waking up promptly at 6:30.

Amazing Grass Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Bar

Amazing Grass Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Bar

My pre-race “breakfast” was an Amazing Grass chocolate peanut butter protein bar. I chose this because it’s nutritionally dense and covers all the macro’s and micro’s well. It had agave nectar for slow burning energy peanut power for satiety.

Standing at the starting gate could not have felt more “real”. Looking around, seeing all the other runners and marathoners was definitely inspiring. Even though I promised myself not to feel any pressure to sign up for another race in the near future, this definitely got me on a high that had me thinking. And then the gun went off!

Rehydrating

Rehydrating

Miles 1-2: Its here! Its here! It’s really here! I was very excited to be running. And I had no clue how fast I was going because my Garmin kept bouncing between 8 and 6; I was just hoping the people I was with were running a reasonable pace.

Miles 3-4: Ugh. Providence is hilly! And the hills set in early. At least by this point I was on the part of the course that I used to run daily, so I knew the terrain like the back of my hand.

Miles 5-6: At the 5 mile marker, I was not on pace for meeting my goal. I really stepped it up and took the downhills like a madmen. Unfortunately, they changed the layout of the course so I was a bit confused where we were going; but I was going and going strong.

Crossing The Finish Line

Crossing The Finish Line

Miles 7-9: Do not underestimate the power of people cheering from the sidelines. I never felt more loved than at this stretch with all the spectators. At a time when my head was saying “You’re only half way there”, everyone else was cheering “Half-way, half-way!”

Miles 10-11: I always try to run strong, be composed, and keep a level-head. At this point, I told myself it was OK to fight, struggle, and swear, so long as I won in the end.

Miles 12-13.1: The last mile is always the easiest. There were signs and people everywhere, and at this point I knew I had my time even if I slowed down considerably. I crossed the line with an official time of 1:37:51 and grabbed the medal at the end with enthusiasm.

Hardware

Hardware

Overall: I could not hold my water today! I think I peed 5 times before the race, and had to again the entire time through. At the end, I was probably dehydrated because I didn’t drink a lick, but it all worked for me. That just goes to show how nervous I was. But I did it! I beat my goal. And I feel no pressure to run off and sign up for another one 🙂

My parents were at the finish line. I really had no plans for after the race but I decided to come home for the day(I really didn’t have the energy to do my own laundry, haha). I made a little breakfast for the car ride.

Oatmeal With Vanilla Peanut Butter

Cherry Fage With Trail Mix

Cherry Fage With Trail Mix

I have no clue what was in this trail mix, but it was delicious; I might have to go back and buy the whole bin. All I know is that the giant chocolate swirls were superb. And with the sweet cherry from the fage, it was definitely a magical pairing. I might have to get this again later on when I go back to RI to have for a dessert 🙂

I’m plenty happy being on my couch, reuniting with Tivoed shows(hello, Little People, Big World), and am about to fix that iron problem with something off the grill! Yum 🙂

These Legs Were Made For Walking

That’s just what they do.
One of these days the legs
Are gonna walk all around you.

Downtown

Downtown

I feel like I went everywhere today, and all by foot! So much for rest day? But it was fun! I did not expect the RISD art sale to be in swing again. There was so many amazing paintings and potteries, any of which I’d have been lucky to own. When I hit downtown, Providence couldn’t have reminded me of Boston any more, and for the first time. I’ve never really seen the city like this; all my time so far has been rainy or cold but today was perfect. Of course, the reason for my walking extravaganza was this:

Registering

Registering

I can’t believe the half-marathon is just tomorrow! The nerves are starting to set in, as this will be my first “real” half-marathon. The Race For The Border was fun, but it felt more like 250 people getting together in New Hampshire to run around a bit. This feels real. The best part of the walk back was knowing that I started lunch at 9:30 and it’d be waiting for me.

Vegan Cheesy BBQ Fries And Beans

Vegan Cheesy BBQ Fries And Beans

I think I’ve hit vegan heaven.

Vegan Cheesy BBQ Fries And Beans

Vegan Cheesy BBQ Fries And Beans

I’ve been really intrigued by Caitlin’s combination of sweet potatoes and BBQ beans. I also loved the combination of sweet potato fries and Daiya from last night so much I knew I wanted it again! Why not combine the two in a poutine-like fashion? This was divine. The flavor came through as some salty, sweet, and fatty bit of deliciousness with crisped potato fries, soft beans, and gooey Daiya. I’m going to need several more plates of this over the Summer.

Groceries

Groceries

My options for the early afternoon were work or do chores. I’d rather do chores. I walked down to Eastside Market and my little Whole Foods to get some ice cream(majorly on sale), 3lb of organic sweet potatoes, beans(dinner), a bar(my “breakfast” tomorrow), and some chocolates(longly considered and purchased enthusiastically).

Organic Pink Lady Apple

Organic Pink Lady Apple

I snacked on an organic apple for rehydrating from all the walking until I was ready for something more “desserty”.

Mint Chip And Vanilla Frozen Yogurt

Mint Chip And Vanilla Frozen Yogurt

This hit the spot. I used the last of my mint Sweet Scoops frozen yogurt with a good amount of Elan’s vanilla. Cost per scoop, this is hands down the best vanilla ice cream out there. It was only $3 for a quart on sale! It’s local to New England and the flavor is absolutely fantastic; it tastes like a fresh, frothy vanilla milkshake all the time. And, of course with me, the ingredient list is rather clean.

Oatmeal With Vanilla Peanut Butter

Oatmeal With Vanilla Peanut Butter

As big as my chocolate tooth is, my vanilla tooth is right there with it; I had a small bowl of oatmeal with some 365 peanut butter mixed with Madhava’s vanilla agave. Vanilla makes for the best everything: peanut butter, chocolate, cookies. God bless vanilla.

Root Beer Zevia

Root Beer Zevia

And a cool Zevia beverage after returning from the dining hall with some greens for dinner. I just hope in hindsight that the concentrated erythritol or stevia here doesn’t cause any running discomfort tomorrow morning.

Hemp Oil Dressed Greens, Chickpea Salad With Raisins And Daiya

Hemp Oil Dressed Greens, Chickpea Salad With Raisins And Daiya

Chickpea Salad With Raisins And Daiya

Chickpea Salad With Raisins And Daiya

I’m really digging this Daiya. I don’t even like real mozzarella this much! I figured because it’s so flavorful it must be loaded with added sugars. Nope! There aren’t any! It puzzles me, but all I care is that it’s good. And there’s never enough room on the plate for my greens, so instead I just put them in a separate bowl after dressing with Foods Alive sweet and sassy; you can’t tell but that’s fully packed in.

OK, kiddos, since I won’t have time to post in the morning, here’s my game plan: I’m going to try to be asleep by 10:30 tonight to get hours and wake up at 6:30. After my morning routine, I’ll either be walking or getting a ride down to the starting line at 7, snack on my Amazing Grass chocolate peanut butter protein bar, and the race will start at 8. My goal is to do it in under 1:40, and my bib is 3761. Nervous? Yes. Excited? Yes. But I figure that’s all part of the recipe for success. As the best of them say, here goes nothing!

Surprise!

Posted on March 29, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update, Race Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Surprise! It’s Monday. How much does that suck? Miss the weekend race recap? Read all about it here.

Surprise! Oprah hates surprises; did you know that? She would not like this post.

Sweet Potato Fries

Sweet Potato Fries

Surprise! These were all from 1 sweet potato! Granted, it was a hugh jass one, but I think that’s impressive nonetheless.

Surprise! I stayed home while my parents went to Whole Foods. I’m pretty sure this is theopposite of how things should be, but I was worn out from my race and needed to sit on the couch with my friend, Mr. Computer 😀

Perfect Apple

Perfect Apple

Surprise! This apple actually tasted good!

Grass-Fed Grilled Burger, Sweet Potato Fries With Chipotle Cayenne Parma

Grass-Fed Grilled Burger, Sweet Potato Fries With Chipotle Cayenne Parma

Surprise! I still eat the same at home as at school, just with different equipment 😀 I asked for red meat for dinner, so we heated up the grill and made some burgers. Mmmm so much juicier than in a pan! And I love how spicy the chipotle cayenne parma makes sweet potato fries; they’re like a new experience.

Flourless Chocolate Cake

Flourless Chocolate Cake

Surprise! My parents picked up a chocolate flourless cake at Whole Foods the day before my birthday to celebrate while my grandmother was around! This really was a surprise; I saw the sketchy brown paper bag they hid it in, but could only guess what it was. You have no idea how relieved I was when I realized they understood gluten-free eating and got an appropriate style cake; that’s love for ya 😉

Purely Decadent Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl Coconut Milk Ice Cream

Purely Decadent Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl Coconut Milk Ice Cream

Surprise! When we got So Delicious cookie dough ice cream, we also got the peanut butter chocolate swirl, which I’m ready to confess is my new favorite frozen dessert. OK, I don’t think there’s actually much surprise here except from my dad when he realized how much ice cream I need to grab for a few days at home.

Flourless Chocolate Cake With Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl Ice Cream

Flourless Chocolate Cake With Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl Ice Cream

Surprise! Could you see this one coming? How could I not take the two fattiest pieces of dessert in our kitchen and combine them? 🙂 I was refueling from a half-marathon, after all. Needless to say, this was tasty. But I think my mom and I agreed there are better flourless chocolate cakes out there, hers included.

Surprise! My stomach got me! 30 minutes later I was not feeling so hot :-X It had been so long since I’d eaten something that rich made from dairy, I forget that a lot of milk fat really doesn’t sit well in my stomach. That plus a sugar rush had me wanting to be near a garbage tin for the rest of the night. Could I possibly regret it, though? Not a chance.

Oatmeal With Butter Toffee Peanut Butter

Oatmeal With Butter Toffee Peanut Butter

Not A Surprise! You didn’t have to be psychic to see a final bowl of oatmeal before bed coming. I wasn’t sure if I’d see this come back up, so I kept it small with just a little butter toffee peanut butter. And before you say “Isn’t that dairy fat, too?”, butter is the 5th or 6th ingredient and 2 tablespoons has just 2g of saturated fat, so I can’t imagine there’s much.

Cards And A Present

Cards And A Present

Surprise! was how I felt when I woke up to cards and my favorite chocolate bar. Awww, what a perfect way to wake up 🙂

Surprise! I’m going to keep the rest of the morning a secret for a good birthday recap tonight or tomorrow morning. What a shame because there’s already been cake mix involved and it’s not even 10am 😉

Surprise! Not even 24 hours after my last half marathon and I’ve signed up for my next! I was actually thinking about this before yesterday. It’s perfect. It’s the Providence Marathon, so let’s just say I know the streets quite well 😉 It’ll hopefully be a nice, warm May day, too. And I might be able to coerce a Brown friend of mine into running, too, which would be great. My only concern are the hills around Providence but I’ll have a while to work with those.

Surprise! You or I could win either Tazo tea, gluten free goodies, or coconut butter in either of these giveaways.

What has been a surprise in your life lately?

Latin Carol Celebration

Posted on December 8, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

*Choosing to ignore an overflowing inbox* The last 16 hours have felt so crammed! I’m happy to have just gotten out of my last class of the week 🙂 For this week all that remains is a pesky paper. Next week might be another story but I like to focus on the present. Except for now when I’m focusing on last night, which was the 62nd annual Latin Carol Celebration!

The First Baptist Church

What is this celebration, you may ask? Well, for 62 years, the Brown Classics department has hosted a Christmastime event where only ancient languages are spoken: Latin, Greek, and this year Sanskrit. There’s readers who read passages from famous texts as well as a full song book of latin Christmas carols and a choir. And it’s held in The First Baptist Church. Not “of Rhode Island”. Just The First Baptist Church.

Professor DeBrohun

It was put on by Professor DeBrohun, who you might know as my Latin teacher, or academic advisor 🙂 Clearly a woman of many hats. It was so much fun belting out carols in Latin and I couldn’t believe that I understood probably 95% of it. During the ceremony I was feeling snacky so I pulled out a bar.

Kardea Cranberry Almond Bar

This was the last of the flavors I had to try. I think I got the most nut out of this bar out of all of them, but I’m still not a fan of the crisp rice in there. Oh, and if this were a real church sermon, I’m pretty sure photographing a snack would not be OK, but needless to say the night was a little bit more relaxed. I was pretty bad about taking pictures of the actual performers but I did snag one of The Chattertocks singing the 12 Days Of Christmas(in latin).

The Chattertocks

What a fun escape from paper writing. I was surprised by how many people were there: easily a couple hundred. And they weren’t just from Brown but rather a large part of the Providence community came to this(and rightly so). It got over later than expected and I was in a mad rush to tie up some loose ends when I got back to my dorm so that I could hit the hay. I made an antioxidant boosting snack:

Pomegranate Chobani With Newman's Own Organic 70% Dark Chocolate

I was so excited to find the ever-elusive pomegranate flavor in one of the dining halls yesterday. The little arils don’t freak me out too much but really why I love this one is because it’s tart like raspberry. And it goes perfect with some dark chocolate, of course. I thing shaving a bar makes it look so much fancier than using chips, don’t you? And because I’m such a creature of habit I needed to down this bowl of oatmeal before I fell asleep:

Oatmeal With Smart Balance, A Double Chocolate Pillow Cookie, And Advent Milk Chocolate

I’m running out of ways to eat those advent chocolates. See the 3 broken heart pieces? Good thing they’re tasty and I’ll never get bored of them. I got a much better night sleep, mostly because I was so tired, but woke up an hour earlier this morning–6:20 as usual. I headed off to the gym with all the necessities in hand.

1/2 An Amazing Grass Bar

This was left over from a run last week. I hate having 1/2 a bar lying around and I was glad to finish it off this morning. The gym was slightly busier than I expected for Reading Week but still empty most of the time. I planned on 10, but as always happens with an Amazing Grass bar I went a little more, 2 miles to be exact. I’m wondering at this point if it’s the bar or just the mentality now? Either way, it worked. Let’s just say I was in a HUGE peanut butter mood when I got back.

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Mighty Maple And Peanut Butter Chips

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Mighty Maple And Peanut Butter Chips

Peanut Butter 2% Yogurt With Raspberry Jam

I love raspberry jam with peanut butter; I think it just works the best. And the peanut flour really took to the fattier yogurt than the non-fat. Overall a winning breakfast(when do peanut butter chips not win ;-)). My final this morning was… not. It was our final required test, but it was 10 minutes of site translation and that was all. Haha, glad I didn’t invest time there. When I got out I took a walk to the mailroom.

Christmas Cards

It never ceases to amuse me that people I see over the weekends send me cards. With money. My mom’s card was a singing one and surely attracted some attention when I opened it up right there in the middle of the building. Thanks mom. I swung by The Ratty for cooking materials because I had the perfect lunch planned.

Vegetarian Philly Cheesesteak Bowl With Broccoli And Sunflower Cheddar Dr. Kracker Flatbread

Yuuuuuuum. I was daydreaming–let’s call it that–about really fatty beef on the treadmill this morning and how my grandmother made the best(but worst for me) tacos as a kid. My mind jumped from taco’s to philly cheesesteak, which was easier to recreate with what I had. I microwave boiled onions for 5 minutes, then mixed together 4oz Lightlife sausage style meat, red and green peppers, the onions, and a slice of American cheddar–sooo delicious and yet healthy enough to enjoy whenever! How is that possible? On the side I had this flatbread. Dr. Kracker sent me products to try and I took a couple from home to my dorm room. I’m glad I grabbed this one because it was astounding–read my review for more deets.

Now that things are winding down, emails have been acknowledged, and google reading has lessened, all there is to do is go pick up a package and then start back up on the essay!

And check back later on for a product review recap post featuring a blog exclusive online coupon code.

Veggies For An Upsest Stomach

Posted on September 22, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Good morning. So I’m thinking I need a section of this blog where I solely talk about how ridiculous my professors are? As in when we’re translating a Catullus poem that deals with bed squeaking and my Latin teacher uses the phrase “going at it, hot and heavy”. Yes, that will scar you. Or perhaps my Greek History class which is taught by my Latin teachers husband in which he frequently mentions how the Olympians were naked, oiled, and wrestling. Should I mention to her that her husband might have something else on his mind? Thankfully, Epic Poetry is a break from the craziness. I love our professor; she’s a middle-aged Spanish woman with a heavy accent and it feels like a museum tour guide is talking to you when she leads discussion ❤

After the Latin class experience, I, amazingly, still had an appetite and went to the Ratty

Vegatable Stiry Fry, Tofu With Steak Sauce/Mustard/Agave Syrup, Snap Peas, Sprouts, Waterchesnuts, And Broccoli

Vegatable Stiry Fry, Tofu With Steak Sauce/Mustard/Agave Syrup, Snap Peas, Sprouts, Waterchesnuts, And Broccoli

The new Taste Of The World section is up and running for the week and this week is Japan. How exciting, I grabbed some scoops of the stir fry which was supposed to have tofu and veggies in it but was lacking. To compensate I grabbed some for the side as well as some tofu which I heated in my microwave with the described sauce. Something in this meal did not sit with me at all. I knew it wasn’t that much food or fuel and I should have eaten more but I could barely get down what was in the picture; I’m thinking it was the stir fry, since oily things tend to give me trouble, so I’ll be steering clear of that this week. Around Epic Poetry I started to have an appetite so I ate these in order:

Peanut Butter Z-Bar

Peanut Butter Z-Bar

Red Delicious Apple

Red Delicious Apple

I hate getting hungry in class because it’s hard to whip out a Whole Food that’s portable and quiet to eat, but the Z-Bar is a close second. When I got back to my dorm I noshed on the apple. Red Delicious all the way for me, which is great because that’s one of the varieties that I can steal from the dining hall 🙂 My roommate was in the room reading all day; I really was not in a people mood so I decided this’d be a good time to run an errand I’d been meaning to do.

Providence Place Mall

Providence Place Mall

So I’ve lived a mile from a mall and only went to Bed, Bath, And Beyond on the first day–what’s up with that? I was impressed how big this place was: 5 stories! I didn’t get anything, but it’d be a fun place to hang if I ever stayed here over the weekend like I should. If they would only put a Whole Foods in there…

When I got back I had a craving for mint ice cream. Normally, I might go out and buy a quart and that’d be that. But given my recent “experience” I was too hesitant to buy anything new and improvised:

Vanilla Elan Frozen Yogurt With Dark Forest Mint Chocolate

Vanilla Elan Frozen Yogurt With Dark Forest Mint Chocolate

It wasn’t really mint ice cream :-/ But I did what I could, right? Maybe tomorrow I’ll go out and get the real thing. By the way, 1 square chopped up goes a long way in ice cream. I’ve always wondered how chocolate bars are so calorific but chocolate chip ice cream not so much. After the sweet I had a little salty:

Roasted And Salted Edamame With Goji Berries

Roasted And Salted Edamame With Goji Berries

This was such a great find last week at Eastside Market. Not only is it uber healthy with fiber and protein, and uber salty with… salt, it was pretty cheap, like 2.50. Considering the amount of goji berries in this, I’m guessing it’s a better option than buying goji’s from the bulk bins. Delicious. Come dinner time I definitely had my appetite back and didn’t touch the stir fry station.

Vegan Chili, Green Beans, Artichoke Hearts, Roasted Veggie Stew, Sweet Potato

Vegan Chili, Green Beans, Artichoke Hearts, Roasted Veggie Stew, Sweet Potato

That’s a lot of vegetables, and it sat with me. Well. The stew was mostly just a ratatouille with less tomatoes which reminded me of Provence. The artichoke hearts were also delicious and apparently made with a cooking wine which I really didn’t taste. And the chili was pretty great. It reminded me of Wendy’s chili except without the dodgy meat. I was very happy and very full with this meal(well, full for an hour, which is about what you can expect from me).

There was too much to choose from last night on TV. I decided to go with Heroes, and this lil’ guy:

Deep Chocolate Vitabrownie

Deep Chocolate Vitabrownie

For chocolate fixes nowadays, I don’t even go for chocolate chips or chocolate cookies; I go for vitaproducts. 30 seconds in the microwave and they become so cakey yet with a fudgy flavor. Perrrrfect, because I’m a cake person but hate how most cakes chocolate cakes come out tasting too vanilla(and not in the “vanilla bean” kind of way). I was so excited to see Chelsea from Days Of Our Lives as an actress on Heroes! And then she got killed off… wtf. I’m going to try and pretend that the season wasn’t ruined then for me. And for all you HIMYM fans, don’t worry, I’m still loyal to the show. I just need to track the new episode down online in my oh-so-plentiful free time. 2 hours is way too long for 1 show, in my opinion. I had to make snacks half way through.

French Toast Oatmeal And 10-Grain Bread With White Chocolate Wonderful And Cream Cheese

French Toast Oatmeal And 10-Grain Bread With White Chocolate Wonderful And Cream Cheese

Talk about hitting the spot. At first I was hesitant to make the oats; I thought to myself “Evan, do you realize you’ve gone a whole day eating vegetarian? Do you want to change that at 9pm at night?” Well, as much as I support the cause, I’m not a vegetarian and thought it’d be kind of silly to ignore a craving over something like that. The secret to good french toast oats: lots of vanilla powder. It’s not a household staple, but you should make it one.

I ended up in bed with my Nintendo DS copy of the Iliad and spent the night mostly like that and got some great sleep. My roommate is starting to get a cold or something so I’m being careful to get my sleep and eat right to fend of the flu this season(no shot for me. I’d rather bolster my immune system with food than fluids). When I got up it was a “treadmill morning” because Tuesday’s and Thursday’s my mornings are a bit hectic and I wanted to be done running at 8:30 sharp. I did 6.86 in 55:10, which is almost perfect pace for me. My right arm and shoulder started getting really sore; I need to learn to watch the TV in front of me rather than 10 feet to the side. When I got back I had the weirdest morning cravings:

Oatmeal/Bran With An Egg And 365 Steak Sauce, Multibran Vitatop With Naturally Nutty Butter Toffee Peanut Butter, Carrot Juice

Oatmeal/Bran With An Egg And 365 Steak Sauce, Multibran Vitatop With Naturally Nutty Butter Toffee Peanut Butter, Carrot Juice

I warned you. What I really wanted was the steak sauce. Don’t ask why, but 365 steak sauce is just addicting. Obviously that would have been too weird to just put on oatmeal, right? Gotta have an egg to balance it out. Oh, and salt. Lots and lots of salt 😉 Because I’m such a Bran boy I was happy to try this vitatop. I took a lesson from Christina and topped it with one of my favorite peanut butters, Butter Toffee by Naturally Nutty. The nutrition for this vitatop threw me off a bit; I wouldn’t have imagined something “bran” having so much sugar. But I was happy there weren’t sugar alcohols and the ingredient list was about as simple as could be. The flavor was just what I expected and hoped for: bran. Believe it or not, sometimes I don’t want everything to taste like a dessert(though I give you plenty of reason to not believe me, there). I would definitely buy this vitatop as a morning-starter, though if I had the choice of flavor I might go for one of their fruitier healthy flavors like BlueBran or AppleBerry.

Why oh why did I make oatmeal on a day I have early class? Seriously, I can spend 2 hours on a good bowl in the morning. I better get my butt moving and the spoon to my mouth. I’m wicked excited for today because it’s going to be nice and sunny and I’m done with class at 11:50! Where will the day take me? I’m guessing it’ll be a Whole Foods lot of fun, wherever it is.

I Came, I Orientated, I Conquered

Posted on September 7, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Goodmorning! I hope you enjoyed the weekend of Product Reviews. It was a ton of fun to try out those foods, and I didn’t want to leave you hanging over the weekend while I was moving.

Friday night was a bit of fun, as my last night at home. I certainly celebrated with this:

Banana Goodness Bread

Banana Goodness Bread

Rum Raisin Gelato

Rum Raisin Gelato

The Banana bread with the NuNaturals baking blend turned out phenomenal. My whole family loved it. It’s meant to be used as a 1:! replacement for sugar, but since I do such low sugar anyway and this brings fiber to the table, I thought I’d double it. It made the bread nice and sweet without having a fake-sugar taste. I’m pretty sure my dad’s convinced I just added more sugar! And I follow the “No pint left behind” policy. I think Mr. Clinton’s down with me on that one. I finished off the Rum Raisin Gelato(which I started earlier that night) because it was sooo good. Raisins in ice cream? I didn’t think so either but it worked!

The next morning I ran a fast 5.3. I thought my legs would be shot after 10 miles but I really felt it and got home quick. i showered, made a day-starting breakfast, and we were into the car and off to Brown. We thought it would be packed, crazy-hecticness all around but it actually wasn’t that bad. We found some spots and started moving into the dorm room. It was definitely a work in progress for most of the day.

Working On The Dorm

Working On The Dorm

Can I say I felt a little embarrassed by how much I was bringing? It felt like every time there was another load from the car to be brought up. I’m pretty sure my roommate thought I was bringing my whole room! It actually wasn’t that much once we unpacked things, put them in their proper places, and figured out what really wasn’t necessary. When you start putting storage bins in storage bins, you know you’re all set. For lunch break we went to Whole Foods where I had my first ever salad bar experience.

Whole Foods Salmon, Quinoa, And Vegetables

Whole Foods Salmon, Quinoa, And Vegetables

So much talk goes on about the Whole Foods salad bar. I actually wasn’t all that impressed with this one. It’s a very small Whole Foods, so maybe that’s the problem. the salmon from the kitchen was decent, though. Too bad my college isn’t closer to the Dedham Whole Foods. I lost count of how many salad bars that place had–it even had trifles and bread pudding! Ridiculous.

Caesar Augustus

Caesar Augustus

I had to be a complete Classics nerd and take a picture of Mr. Augustus who is located on the greens right outside my dorm. No one tell him I wrote a thesis completely bashing him last year, k? thnx.

Around 4 we had a list piled for last-minute stuff from Bed, Bath, And Beyond, so we headed over to the Providence Place Mall. Wouldn’t you know who we saw on the way? Mrs. Hermoine Granger herself. We were also very non-chalante about the whole thing. I think we were yelling “nobody stare!” as we threw our heads out the window for a better look. I figure in a few weeks this is going to be such old news because everyone will have seen her around, but it was fun for the time. At the mall I had my first TCBY experience ever.

TCBY White Chocolate FroYo Soft Serve

TCBY White Chocolate FroYo Soft Serve

You just don’t get these in MA. It was really good, even though probably artificial and all. Gotta have a little moderation sometimes. I still prefer J.P. Licks for my artificialness splurging, though. Maybe some other day they’ll have Peanut Butter soft serve, yum 🙂

Grilled Chicken, Salad Bar Concoction

Grilled Chicken, Salad Bar Concoction

For dinner I met up with a high school friend at the main dining hall, which is also right outside my dorm. What was I to expect from college food? I think it delivered what the expectation was. i stuck with grilled chicken, since that seemed pretty untainted, and went to the salad bar where I got a little crazy. Of course, I followed Miss Holly‘s advice and loaded up on the sunflower seeds.

Honey Maple Peanut Butter

Honey Maple Peanut Butter

When I got back to the dorm I needed a little grain and nut-loving. I found this new one at Whole Foods–it’s a local! Made in Providence, this butter has 14 grams of protein per serving! Not to mention it was honey maple. Overall it tasted very similar to Butter Toffee Peanut Butter from Naturally Nutty, so I was quite pleased. We had some orientation games and safety briefings, and afterwards my friend from dinner came over and we caught up. I was ready to turn in by 11:20, but with my mind racing(not to mention the frats partying) I have no clue when I got to bed.

Sunday I woke up early by chance and decided to stay up. I organized my desk a little before a run:

Don’t it look spiffy? I went out not really knowing where I was going or what I was doing. Turns out Providence is hilly! I ended up going to the State house, the Whole Foods from yesterday, and up and down Thayer street, totaling 5.2 miles. A bit slow because I didn’t know where I was going, but fun nonetheless. I decided to “eat in” so I could catch up on my ridiculous emails and google reader.

My first breakfast as a college student, and it felt good! I will say the oddest thing I miss is a toaster. Really? Are toasters going to come alive and hold the dorm hostage or something? I just want my bread hard and crispy, it’s not a crime! But besides that, I will manage.

Mid-morning I went for a walk to try and find the other Providence Whole Foods. It took quite a while and I half wanted to turn around midway through. I mean, check how scary these Providence streets are:

This sign had me laughing out loud shaking in my boots. I was so happy I kept going, though, because this Whole Foods is full sized deliciousness. I didn’t even have anything I really needed, but I bought some bread to make it all worth while. 3.89 for a loaf is going to make this an expensive habit, but I’m way too picky to be satisfied with the stuff in the dining hall. Man was I spoiled over the Summer. When I got back I had plenty of computer issues to deal with, so I took my lunch from the dining hall to-go.

I’m getting better at navigating the dining hall and picking out the stuff I feel good eating about. Sure, this wasn’t a gardenburger and it definitely didn’t taste like my beloved griller’s vegans, but I worked with what I got.

Afterward my parents dropped by(living 45 minutes away has its ups and downs, but for now this was an up). We hooked up my TV so I can obsess over crappy shows when I should be doing work. After they left, I sat down with a snack:

This wasn’t bad(of course it wasn’t bad, that banana bread is the shit best). It just wasn’t frozen yogurt 😦 I can maybe squeeze a small pint in my freezer; I just have to convince my parents that their poor college student needs ice cream to study.

For dinner we met up at 5 to eat. Wtf? Does anybody in their right mind under the age of 60 eat dinner at 5? I wasn’t hungry, but look what was on the menu!

Salmon, Lentils, Peppers

Salmon and lentils! Ok, they weren’t very well cooked, but I sooo didn’t care. It was just refreshing to know that the dining hall had these foods. I ate it up. After dinner. I felt rebellious. Normally I’m Mr. follow the rules, but just not today. You know what I did? I went out and bought a toaster. I know this is serious stuff I’m dealing with: a toaster. I could kill thousands with it sitting under my bed. But I really really needed a good piece of toast, which is exactly what I had.

Crisp. Hot. Burnt. Delicious. It was way overpriced considering how bad quality it is(13 dollars for what?!) but it was very much worth it. I also opened up my Vive cereal. The little vanilla nuggets all sunk to the bottom but I fished them up. This cereal is one of my favorites already. Just the smell is like Smores at a camp fire. The vanilla nuggets are kind of overrated, but I’m sure they’d be better in milk. I really like the flakes in this since they have a slightly cinnamon tone to them. I don’t eat cereal much, but I love using it for granola, and this seems like a perfect topper to any vanilla yogurt.

After that I went out to the official New Class festival where I got my picture taken with the Brown Bear! Haha, I’ll share that in a little bit. I didn’t get much sleep the night before so I went back to my room. I didn’t think I’d fall asleep so quickly but I know my tv timer hadn’t even gone off by the time I was out like a light. I should have checked my alarm, because apparently I hadn’t set it and woke up scrambling at 8:17(the one day we have something at 9am required). Clearly I couldn’t run so I showered, threw together a breakfast, and now I’m off. Catch you all later!
