Naturally, I’m talking about him. I don’t know why, but yesterday morning I was struck with a little homesickness for him. First, on my way back from the gym, I saw a squirrel on a trash can whose expression instantly reminded me of him(weird, but true). Then I got the most hilarious email from my mom saying he bit her toe last night. Okay, maybe that shouldn’t be funny, but I have an awful sense of humor. From what I gather, they were both sleeping in bed and she kicked him. The whole thing sounds like the episode of Everybody Loves Raymond where they get into an argument because Raymond doesn’t like to be cuddled. Why is that show not on anymore? 😦 Oh the things I miss…

Anyway, class yesterday was dullsville. I got a horrible craving for chocolate chips in class which then led to the challenge of fitting them into my lunch somehow. I also swung by the dining hall to find something a bit more substantial. It turned out to be tempeh day on the vegetarian line! I filled up a container, some for lunch and a lot leftover, and then made the rest in my room.

Peanut Butter Greek Yogurt With Chocolate Chips

This was definitely a protein overload(aka it sat like a brick in my stomach) but all tasted soooo good. I like the tempeh just plain; I think the flavor is so interesting on its own. It must be the whole fermenting thing. Of course, the yogurt was what really hit the spot 🙂 I’m pretty sure my friend Alex in Greek History class couldn’t tell what flavor Chobani I bought but was too afraid to ask.

I didn’t actually do the reading for Epic today(oops) because I figured 6 pages of writing was torture enough. It worked out fine because we didn’t cover everything we were supposed to and what we did I read in the original Latin all 2nd semester of last year. When I got back to my dorm, I found out when exactly my roommate sleeps: 3pm. I think we’re just a little off in our schedules. I started working more on my paper and Greek(the only homework I have for today), and snacked on this bar:

KIND Almond And Cashew Bar

This has easily been one of my favorite bars all through Summer. I’m so glad they sell it at campus stores where I can use my points! It has a honey and date base which is nice and sweet, and the nuts taste really rich. I don’t know why but whole nuts are always more desirable in bar form than on their own with me. Plus it has Omega-3 from flaxseed(which is why it’s called KIND Plus…). This was very tasty while I watched about the woman who was torn apart by a primate. Did anyone else see that? It’s so sad, I couldn’t imagine an animal doing that much harm or a person living through it. I made some oatmeal after Oprah.

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Mocha Peanut Butter

I don’t eat it much, but every so often I get an urge for this Naturally Nutty peanut butter. I figured the earthiness of it would work well with some pumpkin oatmeal. I added in nutmeg to deepen the flavor, and it was really strong. For dinner, I met with Adam at The Ratty.

Lentil Chili, Carrots And Zucchini In Garlic, Cooked Spinach, Raw Tomatos

This was definitely a “take the picture fast and don’t look too odd” picture, lol. The chili was OK, but not great; it needed more chili powder I’m guessing. I always like that carrot and zucchini medley, and the rest was pretty simple. I’ve stopped looking at what’s in the non-vegetarian line pretty much because I’ve expected weird stuff. Tonight, I got to see what it was via my friend’s dish: “paella” with fried chicken and unopened mussels. First of all, since when does paella have on-bone chicken in it? I’ve been to Spain and that’s not how they roll. Also, unopened mussels? Not smart. That pretty much describes why I pick up quality meat at Whole Foods to make dinner for myself some times. Ginger Ale Zevia

This one I think had one of the weaker flavors, but maybe I just feel that way now that I’ve had ginger preserves which are spicier than all hell. Of course, by 8 I was watching the CMA’s. Go Lady Antebellum for single of the year and best group! I think any of those were good songs(like Chicken Fried!) but they deserved to win something. I think the entire show was just awesome.I’m not so secretly a country addict, with half of my itunes library being Sugarland and Taylor Swift alone. I had a little of this mid-broadcast.

Greek Yogurt With Cherry Butter, Dried Cherries, Vanilla Sugar, And 2 Goji Gourmet Cherry Cacao Cookies


These have to be my favorite cookie of all time. I’m definitely placing a big bag in my shopping cart from Goji Gourmet. By the way, congrats to them for being a Rachael Ray snack of the day! I hope that episode airs on a Tuesday or Thursday when I can watch it. I also now need to restock on cherry preserves; do you think I can get the register attendant to ring it up as cranberry butter like with the dried ones? 😉 Back to television, I was standing on my feet when Taylor won; that was so exciting for her! And of course I was rooting on Sugarland, too.  Afterwards I made some breads & spreads(why haven’t I used that phrase in a while?).

Whole Wheat Cinnamon Raisin English Muffin With Ginger Cream Cheese And Mushed Banana With Baker's Chips, Chocolate Fig Vitatop With Chocolate Sunflower Seed Butter


I really didn’t know what to do with this flavor vitatop but I think it worked well with chocolate sunflower butter for an odd but attractive duo. I either burn through english muffins or have to force myself to want them. Good spreads like this help with that, though. I think when Taylor won entertainer of the year that pretty much summed it up. Her reaction was priceless, and this definitely was her year.

This morning has just felt so “on” so far. I woke up at 6:20, and then decided another 20 minutes of sleep would be just fine 🙂 On the way out of my dorm I grabbed a new Larabar.

Peanut Butter And Jelly Larabar

I don’t quite have time to write a review at this moment, which would be here once I set it up, but this was awesome. I really did not expect to like it so much and I hate relying on new flavors of bars when I’m out of the house but this was so dead on. This really powered me through 11 miles in 90:36. It must have, because I was only planning for 8, but I think I was meant to do 11. In that time I listened to every Taylor Swift song I have(which took 88 minutes) and got to watch a segment on the Today show about childhood diabetes and the foods we can use to prevent it. They didn’t promote oatmeal and pumpkin but I’m going to bet those are good ones 🙂

After yesterday’s run I was so dehydrated. I didn’t even realize how bad it was until I took a trip to the bathroom and remembered when my mouth felt dry back at mile 2… I will definitely 100% be bringing a water bottle with me whenever I go to the gym from now on. I did this morning and, though it was a bit fumbly drinking on the tread, I’m glad I did. Yesterday, after about 2 full water bottles at breakfast, I grabbed this on my way to class:

Some people like their caffeine from coffee, I prefer Zevia cola 🙂 I must admit, I was considering not going to class at all yesterday; if I didn’t I could just dedicate a large chunk of time to essay writing and I’m much better at doing projects all at once than split up. Nevertheless, I was a good student and went to them all. That was good for Latin because we got our old essays back.

Lemon Bar Larabar

Lunch was magnifico. I also bought some Chobani and baby carrots but decided not to go with them. I love that The Heat Is On tofu salad though so I’m sure those carrots will get used yet. And this Lemon Bar was the first of the Larabars I was sent. Loved it! It was so pure and lemony, but also sweet. The only thing I thought was weird was cashews and almonds; why not one or the other instead of mixing flavors? Also, I got a whole almond among the mostly chopped nuts, which threw the texture off a tad. But overall this was not a lemon 😉 Oh, and we got more graded back in class.

Double wahoo! Ok, this was a little expected after the teacher called me out in class, but it was so nice to hold it and see it was real. I still have 1 midterm essay to write but since I did so well on this and feel pretty good about the other two, I’m not going to sweat or rush this last one. Epic, on the other hand, would have been a great choice to skip to get work done. Oh well, but the good thing about that was I got to check my mail and find this.

One Lucky Duck Samples

How exciting; of course all my eats are all-natural and a good portion organic, but raw and vegan is something I haven’t tapped in to much. Thanks, One Lucky Duck! I think I need to explain something here about coconut: I hate it in anything that is not coconut flavored(i.e. when granola randomly has it as an ingredient). Tropical Fruit Tart Larabar

2 in 1 day? I’m burning through these babies. The tropical fruit tart was good, but nothing like the lemon bar. The only flavor that I really got was pineapple. Still, it was better than I thought it’d be. From the stories I’ve heard I expected to be spitting this out on the floor. I watched the newest SNL in the afternoon. I’m a huge Taylor Swift fan so that was great to see; she wasn’t hysterical, but she was decent, and for someone who’s only 19 and not an actress or comedian it was a job well done. I don’t get why her musical performances weren’t online, though. Anyone know where I can watch those? I also got a bit of inspiration for some oatmeal.

Pumpkin Oats With Eggnog Frosting

This was inspired by Sunday’s breakfast and snack, and it was sooo good. For the frosting I did 2 ounces Greek yogurt(full fat) and 2 tablespoons eggnog with vanilla stevia to taste. Seriously, that was some of the noggiest, best frosting I could have hoped for. I think I should have let the oats cool just a bit, though, because the yogurt did not like the hot oatmeal. After some working I ended up at The Ratty with a friend for dinner.

Sweet Potato With Black Bean Taco Filling, Beets, Broccoli Spears

I was having a moment where I couldn’t decide if I was hungry or full; I think the heated up yogurt wasn’t sitting well in my stomach(still make the frosting for a cool dish if you get the chance!). After seeing what was available, I realized I was hungry. There was huge broccoli spears, whole beets, and roasted sweet potatoes. To eat a little something other than just plain veggies I took some taco filling and mushed it on the potato–yum! I love the sweat heat it added. Catching up was equally exciting because we hadn’t been both available for dinner in a while.

When I got back to my dorm I blasted a bit of Lady Antebellum(hence the title ;-)). By 8 I couldn’t quite understand why I wanted to go to bed. I mean, I know I’m practically a grandpa, but 8? That’s way before Leno. Then I remembered the <5 hours of sleep I got and it started making sense. I decided it’s worth staying awake if only for the emails I get from my parents. One was from my mom, complaining my dad takes forever to get home from work and about how much she loves pineapple Chobani(and I don’t think I ever saw her even eat a yogurt in the 18 years I lived at home). Then 1 and a half hours later I get an email from my dad(I guess he does take a while getting home) telling me about blog contests for gas relief products. Thanks.

So Delicious Soy Yogurt With Chocolate Chips And Vanilla Sugar

Naturally there was yogurt and chocolate chips. I t’s definitely a full blown addiction now, which is sad because Agave Sweetened So Delicious Soy Yogurt is no longer a sale item 😦 I do love that this is a completely vegan snack though, not to mention one with a hefty dose of fiber 🙂 Heroes really didn’t grab me last night. As in, I was too busy working/staring at my yogurt to even notice what the plot was.

TJ Carrot Ginger Muffin With Smart Balance Peanut Butter And Ginger Cream Cheese

This was gingerlicious as well; I don’t remember the last time I had this flavor muffin in my fridge. I forgot how good it is! The ginger preserves suggested pairing it with cream cheese, and they were sooo right. Then again, I pair everything with cream cheese, so they had a good shot with me. Naturally, I needed to dehead the muffin like I was Henry VII to eat it.

Chocolate Brownie Z-bar With Butter Toffe Peanut Butter

I discovered I’m out of chocolate vitatops 😦 But fortunately a Z-bar was there to lift me up. I’m honestly thinking I should buy the 5lb tub of butter toffee peanut butter next time from Naturally Nutty because I am going through this like wildfire. I decided to go to bed early because I was so exhausted, but Kathy Griffin was on Leno so I knew I needed to stay up at least until 10:30. Did anybody else see her new stand up special? Hysterical. Even my mom laughed at most of it. Anyway, 10:30 and I was out like a light. I heard my roommate come home some time but wasn’t awake for more than 2 minutes, and slept in until 7.

This morning I wanted something lighter and simpler at the gym so I decided on 7 miles in 58:26. I must be a very influential person because this morning while I was watching the Today show the 50 year old weight lifters turned another TV onto the Cartoon Network! There is something very amusing watching a 300 pound man stationary bike to Pokemon.

Eggnog Yogurt

Tis definitely the season 🙂 I used only oat bran today instead of an oatmeal/oatbran mix(because I overpoured). It’s so nice and creamy with pumpkin but I think I prefer the oats for a little bulk and texture. Of course, what makes pumpkin oatmeal if not pepita sun butter and pumpkin seeds mixed with a little bit of honey> So sweet and delicious! And I need to buy about 5 more cartons of the Silk nog at the rate I’m going through. Just 6oz Greek yogurt and 1/4 cup makes the perfect, noggy protein.

Today I have just Greek which will be a guest lecturer(aka a waste of time), and then the whole afternoon to do work(aka go to University Plaza Whole Foods). I completely forgot to get nutmeg for my nog while I was home so I’ll definitely be on the lookout for that, and I think coconut is still on sale, too! Enjoy your day!

Pumpkin Bread Hull With Chocolate Chips

I’m afraid of losing recipes, which is why I’m glad to have a blog to post them on.

Moist Moist Pumpkin Bread


7.5oz canned pumpkin

2 eggs

1/2 cup cinnamon applesauce

1/3 cup water

1 cup brown or turbinado sugar

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

1/4 teaspoon ginger

Pumpkin Bread Loaf

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and prepare a 9×5 loaf pan. In a large bowl, mix pumpkin puree, eggs, applesauce, water, and sugar. In another bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, and spices. When dry are evenly mixed, dump into the wet while stirring. Stir only until no more dry ingredients can be seen, but take care not to over mix. Pour batter into pans and put in oven until a knife in the center comes out barely wettened, or about 50 minutes. Let sit in pans for 10 minutes and then remove.

I’m afraid of how many miles we’re all piling on together. Guys(and gals), we’re rocking it. These numbers people are posting are incredible. I ended up for a 6.7 mile run around my neighborhood. One thing I don’t like about not running first thing is that my energy levels feel so much lower. I felt like I could’ve stopped at any point but I really wanted to finish what I set out to do.

I’m afraid of red meat, but not bison. At much lower cholesterol and saturated fat levels with all the same flavor, what’s not to love? I’m clearly never afraid to eat my meat slightly undercooked. Giovanni's White Chocolate With Cranberry Gelato

I’m afraid that if I didn’t eat this while walking out the door to go back to my dorm, I might have had the whole pint. This stuff rocked. It tasted like straight up white chocolate. It’s made by a local company based in Newton, MA in small batches. This was pure decadence, and I love that the ingredients were just milk, cream, white chocolate, cranberries, and emulsifier.

I’m afraid that this semester has been a bit of a waste of money food-wise. I’m on the best food plan option which gives me more dining hall visits than I know what to do with, and honestly, I love buying and making my own food; it’s one of those things that makes me feel valuable and responsible. Despite that fear, we stopped at Whole Foods and Eastside Market on the way back.

I’m afraid that I’m going to get arrested, because at the prices I got some of this stuff for it was practically a steal. With sales and store coupon, the Oikos normally 2.19 was .25 and the chocolate bar usually 3.00 was 1.25. And a jar of ginger preserves was only 2.69! We thought it was a misprint since that’s cheaper than most of the store brand fruit jams, but it was correct.

I’m afraid to ask what happened Saturday night when I wasn’t in my room. My roommate left a note saying he had people over and someone dropped something that went behind my bed so they had to move a few things to get to it and tidy up after themselves. That’s all well and good, but, uhh, why was my comforter made on my bed upside down? Do I want to know?

I’m afraid I’m a little confused what season it is between pumpkin bread and nog Greek yogurt. Is it Christmas yet? Or am I supposed to halt for Thanksgiving? And are we officially done with Halloween or can I bust a spooky s’mores out from time to time? Someone please clarify.

And I’m afraid of sharing how random my dinner was last night, but I’m a food blogger and I’d be an awful one to deprive you of this laugh. I was feeling quite lethargic(vocab word!) and decided rather than forcing a “real” dinner on myself to just eat what I could convince myself into. Last night, that was pumpkin oatmeal(a vegetable and a grain) with a gardenburger, tempeh bacon, and mighty maple(3 delicious and vegan sources of protein). See? It was well rounded in the end.

I’m afraid that I give off the impression that all I eat is yogurt and chocolate. Except that’s probably the truth. They just work so well together in my opinion, how could you not love it? This new bar, even though it supposedly had chai and ginger in it, didn’t taste very special. Maybe I need to have it again.

Sweet Vermont Toast With Cookie Dough Peanut Butter


I’m afraid of running out of hard to find peanut butters, but that doesn’t stop me from eating them. The only store I know that sells this is Roche Bros. for an arm and a leg but it’s so good I’ll have to buy another when it’s gone.

I’m afraid Brothers And Sisters is going to get screwed by the Emmy’s like the best shows usually do. But last night convinced me yet again it’s one of the best dramas on TV. Please tell me someone else saw the head shaving seen with Kitty; that was just so moving.

I’m afraid of falling asleep in class today because I had horrible insomnia last night. Despite trying to go to bed at 11, I don’t think I fell asleep until 1. Sugar was probably to blame. I had a few TJ mini peanut butter cups at the end of Brothers And Sisters as well, and no oatmeal last night(besides dinner) to slow down those quick carbs.

Clif Peanut Butter And Jelly Mojo Dipped


I’m afraid of having to go to the bathroom while running at the gym because I feel like getting off the treadmill makes everything less of an accomplishment. Thankfully, that didn’t happen today. In fact, I set a new distance PR of 14 miles in 1:55:22!! I truly felt I needed to have a kick-butt workout to sweat out anything negative even though I only had 5 hours of sleep. The Mojo above was eaten around mile 10.

I’m afraid people think I’m crazy for watching cartoon network at 7am. But I just could not care less about whatever’s on CNN, and I’m not going to slog on a treadmill for 2 hours watching something I have no interest in because it’s the adult thing to watch.

Kashi Strawberry Flax Waffles With Strawberry Jam And Vanilla Almond Butter, Pumpkin Peanut Maple Soy Yogurt With Chocolate Chips


I’m afraid I might have lost a pound or so after these past few weeks/month of higher mileage, so feel free to kick me in the butt if I’m slacking on my eats, k? You won’t find that this morning. The Kashi waffles had on it vanilla almond butter by Naturally Nutty and Wild Oats strawberry jam(great combo). I’m not a huge fan of this new brand soy yogurt I bought last week because it’s so thin and doesn’t have much of a funky flavor at all, but it thickened nicely with peanut flour and pumpkin, topped with maple syrup and chocolate chips.

I’m afraid of skipping classes, even though that’s supposedly “OK” in college. If I weren’t afraid, I’d probably stay in my dorm and work on my essays today, but I’ll probably wind up going to all 3.

Lemony Fresh

Yesterday morning, the morning I ran the farthest, had the most to do in terms of classes, that was the morning I had ample time to grab a coffee before class. I do not understand life sometimes. My teacher, who never calls on me, did for Horace’s 11th Ode, aka the “carpe diem” poem. How fitting, I thought, and thankfully I was well prepared(lucky me it’s probably one of his easiest to understand). I decided to make lunch when I got back.

I knew things got a little pressurized in the microwave, but I didn’t realize how much so. Don’t poke an egg yolk if you hear sizzling to check if it’s done, or else you get albumen everywhere. They were still decent enough to eat, though, so I went ahead and finished up the meal.

This has been the week of repeat meals; first the tofu salad and now this. But when you find something good, why stop eating it! I wanted something acidic for the eggs so I added strawberry marmalade with orange liquer. And the “tempeh steak” was just 3oz leftover tempeh with mushrooms in 2 tablespoons 365 steak sauce and microwaved at half power for 5 minutes. This would be sooo good properly baked.

I took this to class and ate it there. My Greek history professor is such a character. First he said he didn’t have our midterms because the TA lost 3, one of which he “named” as mine. This was him being funny, but I’m so gullible I think my heart skipped a beat. Then he said he just was too lazy to finish them so far, but that one was very creative and stood out to him(he might have even said genius?). Anyway, it was mine! I was mortified to be singled out in the class like that, especially since it’s a large crowd of upperclassmen, but I also felt like I needed a recognition of good work like that lately because work has felt a little thankless.

Between class I found an awesome opportunity to be charitable. This table was set up with The Cupcakerie cupcakes, aka the kind of been buying myself for the past few Cookie Fridays, and all the proceeds were being donated to their charity. How could I say no? I grabbed my treat for later and headed off to class. The cupcake was for dessert at night, but I did grab this.

Vitaminwater 10 Lemonade

I forgot how fresh and sweet these are. But they’re 2.75 dollars at the campus convenience store! I could have had another cupcake for that money(although this was bought with my dining points whereas the cupcake was out of pocket). I hope the money for the vitamins was worth it; gotta keep that immune system up when it feels like everyone around me is getting sick.

Class was completely unhelpful in helping me choose an essay topic to write on. Now I feel like I’m going into the weekend practically blind of ideas. I’d like to have something to grab onto just so I feel like I’m heading in the right direction. I’d be glad to grab a B like on my last essay. Later on, around 4, I worked my way back to my dorm for a snack where I took a tip from the tipping point.

Pumpkin Oats With Mighty Maple And Maple Cinnamon Frosting

Did you all see on Caitlin’s blog yesterday morning her waffles with amazing greek yogurt “frosting”? I did. And it was stuck in my brain all day until I tried it on these oats. I did a little less than 1/4 cup Oikos, 2/3 tablespoon maple syrup, 3 drops vanilla stevia, and cinnamon. Wow! This was such a sweet winner. I love the way it flavored the oats drizzled on top, but never overpowered anything. Caitlin used some great spices I wish I had at my disposal in my dorm; I’ll have to try this over he Holidays when I’m home and making Christmas Oats. Later on, I grabbed this bar and stepped out of the dorm.

One thing I love about these bars is I feel entirely healthy and like I don’t need another veggie or fruit for the rest of the day 🙂 Just kidding. This flavor was pretty good. It reminded me of a lightly sweetened lemon bar. I think if I was in Paula Deen’s kitchen I would have busted out the powdered sugar on it. After going up Thayer street, the night(and 5:20 is totally night) took me to Blue State.

Blue State Decaf

If you’re ever around Providence, skip the Starbucks down the road and stop at Blue State. I’m not going to say the coffee tastes entirely different, but it is quite good and they have such a friendly staff always. This was definitely one of those times where my own productiveness impresses me. I grabbed dinner to-go on the way back, watched The Office, 30 Rock, and How I Met Your Mother, assembled the pile of work I need to do over the weekend, took care of general hygiene(as in cut nails, shaved, but sadly no floss, sorry Ms. Everythingtarian), wrote 2 reviews, microwave roasted a squash, and changed my clothes. Whew. Dinner was a relaxing time to sit down.

Cajun Baked Pollock, Asparagus Tips With Lemon, Mashed Acorn Squash

Excitingly, fish was on the menu tonight. This actually had surprisingly good flavor; spices are a great way to turn the heat up in a dish without making it too heavy. The aspargus was a little… mutilated, but it counts as greens right? I also liked that it was cooked with lemon 😉 And I needed to use that other 1/2 of an acorn squash. Normally I eat it whole with the skin but I felt like something different tonight and mashed it. It was nice and light with a slightly buttery flavor; mashed acorn squash would be a great light dish at the Thanksgiving table(though I think I’d pass and opt for more sweet potato :-)).

The internet basically stopped working last night around 7. Not everything, but everything that mattered(email, google reader, runner’s world forum, etc.). I guess it was a good motivator to study and read *Sigh* Ghost Whisperer helped entertain me. I love this season so far; it actually has a plot and that’s so rare in television shows these days. Luscious Lemon Cupcakerie Cupcake

Yesterday for Cookie Cupcake Friday , the one that seemed best to me was the lemon flavor. The base cake had a great, light lemon note to it, while the buttercream frosting had a much heavier, richer flavor. I loved the candied zest on top, which made the whole thing smell so perfumey. This was easily my favorite lemon treat of the day. We need to petition for something better to be on at 9 on Fridays. This is prime viewing time and I was watching Masterpiece Theater. Has anybody else seen that? Don’t. It’s nothing terribly exciting unless you need a good English accent fix. I kind of wanted pumpkin oatmeal with peanut butter at 10. What I didn’t want was a bowl to clean up at 11. Instead, I had a yogurt mess with the same flavors.

9 hours of sleep. Need I say more? I suppose it is a “treat” that the gym doesn’t open until 9 and this morning was supposed to be below freezing. I woke up at 8:30 to good news; I emailed the professor of the class I want to be in and it seems like I’ll get in yet! This will make my schedule very awesome for next year, but I’ll disclose more when it’s official. I got to the gym only to find the usual shows I’d watch on Saturday weren’t on, so instead I let my ipod entertain me for an hour, and ran 7.2 miles in that time. There were only 3 machines and a lot of people so I was worried I’d get kicked off before I was done but I didn’t; the benefit of running at 7 is no one fights for machines. When I got back I put in a load of laundry, showered, and made two glorious messes.

Yogurt With Dried Cherries, Cherry Butter, And Crumbled Cherry Dark Chocolate Squares

See? I can get messy after all. I used a little less oatmeal this time because of the cookies(which are whole grain after all so that’s not heinous). I just love the maple and whole chunks of ginger! Talk about some sweet heat. The yogurt mess was equally good but also a bit of a let down. I put the cherries in the yogurt when I woke up hoping they’d rehydrate a little like the raisins did but apparently it doesn’t work the same. Still it’s quite delicious.

Today’s a bit in the air but there’s about a 90% chair of baking and sitting with Montana on the couch; I got word over the week he’s always looking for me to sit with when I’m not there and no one else sits with him! I also have high hopes of doing 2 history midterm essays, some Horacian odes, and picking a thesis for Epic Poetry. Hmmm, we’ll see about that *rolls eyes*…

I act like a blogger when I read other blogs rather than study for my test in 30 minutes. Fortunately, I peeled myself away from the screen to make it to class in time. The test was a bit longer than any of us thought it’d be but I feel like exactly the passages I studied were the ones on the test and that I did really well. I guess the Greek shirt just has good luck in it?

I act like a blogger when I get obsessed with a food. Now it is tofu salad with The Heat Is On peanut butter. Every time there’s carrot at the salad bar, I’ve convinced myself I’m doing the right thing by eating this. That, and it’s just too good to turn down. I used a little less tofu this time(because I ran out) and the peanut butter flavor was even better. Definitely needed some stevia and salt though to pumpkin it up.

I act like a blogger when I’m convinced Greek yogurt can be a “dessert”. All it needs is some vanilla, raisins, cinnamon, and voila. I was trying to recreate this amazing rum raisin gelato made by a Massachusetts company which is so light and smooth but I don’t have rum. I probably could find that in a dormitory pretty easy but I didn’t feel like “meeting the neighbors” with the line “Excuse me, do you have rum for my Chobani?”.

I act like a blogger when I spend 30 minutes making a granola for the Facebook  MojaMix contest I won. I went with a ginger base with dried strawberries, persimmons, chia seeds, chocolate sprouted sunflower seeds, and cacao nibs. How awesome does that sound? I can’t wait till it comes!

I act like a blogger when I ditch on the end of Days Of Our Lives and all of Rachael Ray to go get groceries.

I act like a blogger when I almost neglect an awkward “Hi” with a classmate because I’m fascinated by how the raisins soaked up the yogurt liquid and were now cinnamon infused. Seriously, that was awesome. I didn’t even plan it like that but viola. The raisins got so moist and well seasoned, it totally converted me to liking raisins again.

I act like a blogger when I whip out my camera in the middle of the dining hall to take a picture of dinner. That’s a fun way to meet people. I thought of you all when the main vegetarian dish was pumpkin ravioli in cream sauce 🙂 I, however, was still a little pumpkined out, and the cream sauce made it a little less appealing. Instead I had the vegan BBQ navy beans. These taste just like good baked beans should taste like and were amazing. They had a very deep molasses and tomato flavor to them. All I could think about eating them was how smelly my run would be this morning but how I didn’t care.

Banana Goodness Oatmeal


I act like a blogger when a good night is evaluated on the basis of the oatmeal. Last night I decided to try and recreate banana goodness bread in my microwave since I haven’t made a loaf in a few weeks. I used 2oz banana, vanilla powder, and vanilla stevia in the oatmeal, and topped with semi-sweet baking chips. It was a decent substitute but of course not the real thing. I also sprinkled salt over the top at the end and I think that really helped the flavor.

I act like a blogger when I stress over watching Grey’s Anatomy or The Office. Oh wait, I was doing that years ago. Nevermind.

I act like a blogger when carbo loading couldn’t be easier. I defrosted one of Veggie Girl’s Fig And Almond blondies. After a few month of being frozen, they aren’t quite as good, but a little cream cheese fixed that. I also had an english muffin with mushed banana and chocolate chips(and salt, of course) and cinnamon vanilla sunflower butter. Perfect. Rachael Ray was on The Jay Leno Show and gave some hilarious answers to 10 at 10 in case anyone missed that.

I act like a blogger when I set my alarm at 6:15 to get up and do my long run. I had planned for another 13.1 miler today. I wasn’t particularly hungry but I figured food would be good so I grabbed a mojo.

Apparently, this bar isn’t just one of my favorites but a favorite of a lot of you guys, too! I just loved the saltiness. And the combo of pb chips and peanuts gave me good immediate and long lasting energy. I actually constantly forgot to be eating this, so it lasted me 13 miles. Speaking of which, I set a new PR record of 1:46:28! That’s the fastest I’ve ran a half marathon by a good 3 minutes

I act like a blogger when I choose running over course registration. As in, course registration opened at 8, and by the time I got back to my dorm it was 8:40. I didn’t think things would go so fast but 1 of the courses I really wanted to get into filled up fast and I got pretty upset with myself for letting me miss it. I’m hoping I can still wiggle my way into that class yet, but I’ll talk about that more once I know more.

I act like a blogger when I feel compelled to perfect an oatmeal recipe the next chance I get. This time I used 3oz banana and a lot more salt. I think it came out a tad bit better.

I act like a blogger when I decide a theme like “I act like a blogger” would be cutesy for a post and then by the end I want to go back and delete every time I wrote those annoying damn words! Haha. Don’t forget it’s Cookie Friday! I need to get my thinking cap going. And I’m going to work very hard to fix that class situation I mentioned, because I am a bit disappointed and I’m sure I can get in if I pull some strings. Anyway, have a good day!

A Normal Morning Is A Good Morning

Yesterday was dark and pooring. All day. Warning: There was a lot of flash necessary in the making of this post. Eating a larger than usual breakfast later than usual did not have me very hungry after Latin class. Unfortunate because that’s my hour to eat. I perused the Farmers’ Market and found some acorn squash but my food budget for the rest of October is 92 cents so I passed on it all and went for the free stuff in the dining hall.

I ate this in Greek History class. Or rather, I ate the soup and the over oily vegetables. I didn’t even bother with the tofu; apparently, if it’s not drenched in maple and mustard, it’s not appealing to me. The veggies in their oily mess were bad enough as was. Greek History class was so boring I almost fell asleep in the last 5 minutes. We had a TA teaching the lesson; the regular professor may be stubborn and opinionated but he’s entertaining. When I got out of class I needed to grab this:

Despite the fact that my next class was in the opposite direction, I rushed to my dorm to grab this and then ran to class. Don’t ask me why, but after that failure of a lunch I was craving something sweet and carbonated. If I didn’t have these babies I might have been weak enough to go for a diet Sprite. The next class was slightly better, but when half the students fail to show up you feel a little suckered. Obviously no one wants to go to class in a deluge but we do.

The rest of the afternoon honestly had me wanting to just call my mom and beg her to bring me home for the night or at least dinner. I was soaking wet, and my roommate was napping. Apparently, he caught streptococcus. Our room smelled awful, like a nursing home, where I volunteered 2 hours a week for 3 months last year so I would no. I couldn’t turn on the lights because I didn’t want to wake him, so I resorted to making oats in the dark.

Is there anything more calming than a big bowl of oats? Maybe ones with chocolate and maple syrup. Those two flavors are dynamite in this New Englander’s heart. How has nobody made a maple chocolate bar? I ate this in the dark watching Oprah with no sound. Did I mention how much I wanted to call my mommy? I also had the great pleasure to do homework in the dark, because Ancient Greek letters aren’t easy enough to read in the light. My roommate finally woke up at 5:30, by which point my eyes felt like a mole person’s when the lights came on. I made a snack to hold me over for dinner.

Obviously, this bread was meant to be with this peanut butter. Probiotics are supposed to help against illnesses so I was thinking this would help be not get strep throat(or I was thinking, damn that’ll be good). At 6:27 my friend called to say essentially ditch me for our dinner at 6:30. If this was a few hours earlier, I wouldn’t have minded in the least(I was half planning on ditching him because I knew I’d be a Debby Downer at dinner). But 3 minutes early was just annoying; think of all the extra time I could have spent in my pajamas! I went to the dining hall and picked up dinner, went back to my room, got undressed for the night obscenely early, and ate.

This was exactly what I needed. I felt healthier and more myself with every bite. All the veggies tasted fresh and crisp, which only happens about 20% of the time with the dining hall. What was actually on the line was Sole stuffed with spinach and breading. I’m not a stuffing person(except for Whole Foods stuffing which is incredible and almost back!) so I took 2 and unstuffed them. The whole dish felt nice and light. If I were in the mood for some carby carbs Trader Joe Mac N’ Cheese would have gone well here, but I needed this meal just as it was.

I know I wasn’t the only one excited by The Charlie Brown Halloween Special on last night. Don’t lie. I’m such a sucker for the seasonal shows. I could honestly watch It’s A Wonderful Life again and again. The downside of a light dinner is that you’re hungry not too long later. The upside is dessert’s what’s best anyway.

Having a sick roommate, I need to bolster my immune system with these amazing cookies, right? Goji berries are my excuse for everything. But seriously this was soooo good. Not really toast because I was too lazy to bust out the toaster at 10:50, this was eaten in bed and then promptly put me to sleep, because I’m classy like that.

Nothing remarkable happened this morning, and that felt great. I rolled out of bed at 6:50, still felt full from dinner dessert, and hit the gym, just like ol’ times. I ran a nice 8 miles in 67:25 while watching the usual shows and studying up for my history midterm tomorrow(my tiny handwriting isn’t exactly easy to read in motion, either). Because I was so on top of everything, I got back to my room at 8:30, giving me 2 full hours before class. I even was the first person to the showers!(aka, I didn’t have to smell the remnants of the hockey player who lives 3 doors down. What could be more glorious than this normalcy, you ask?

Goji Gourmet's Goji Orange MintChip Cookies, Attune Coffee Bean Dark Chocolate Bar

I didn’t actually feel like yogurt this morning(I know, shocker, right?) but I still wanted to get my probiotics so I snatched this attune bar from Attune Foods. I think that’s technically a breakfast food even though it’s chocolate because it has coffee in it. And it’s definitely a super food with the antioxidants from dark chocolate; can’t really prove me wrong with that logic 😉 I also tried a new flavor of Goji Gourmet‘s cookies. I was a little worried this one would have a muddled flavor with everything going on but oh my God was it good. Somehow you totally got the mint, goji, orange, and chocolate essence in every bite. Yum! Now I feel invincible from the germs lurking about.

Today I’m thinking of enjoying the not rain with a trip to Whole Foods and Eastside Market to see the new sales. I have 92 cents left in my food budget for October… We’ll see how that goes.

Thank you to all my readers; yesterday finally broke the record set by the day my refrigerator was featured on Carrots N’ Cake as the most trafficked day yet. You guys all rock(and clearly have nothing better to do on a Monday than read blogs :-D)

Banana Goodness Bread has been updated to reflect the change I tried this weekend whereby I used a container of Vanilla Oikos for the yogurt.

In regards to some questions, all the products featured on this blog are all-natural unless I make a point otherwise. “All-natural” means no artificial preservatives, flavors, colors, or ingredients. I think the last thing I ate that didn’t fit this was the frosting on the vegan cupcake from vegan friday, though I didn’t turn purple so I think all is well 😉

I have, under my bed,

23 peanut butter jars(currently including 2 mighty maples and 2 smart balances)

7 almond butter jars plus 2 barney butter packets

1 pepita butter

3 sunflower butters

1 cashew butter

1 chocolate hazelnut butter

and 1 jar of vegan fluff

And I’m always looking for more in my collections so if you have something all-natural you want me to review send it my way 🙂

Okay, back to yesterday morning, I felt like a drain; I could not get enough water in me. After I got tired of water, I took a walk to the mail room, which happens to sell organic decaf coffee. They also happened to have this for me:

The amazing bakers over at Goji Gourmet sent me these cookies to try(the fact that I said amazing bakers should probably clue you in these didn’t stay unopened for long). Their cookies are infused with superfoods like the goji berry, packing an antioxidant punch with some fun flavors like almond oat, ginger walnut, cherry cacao, and orange mintchip. They’re all natural, mostly organic, and without refined ingredients. A more perfect food for me? I think not. I kept these in my bag through Latin class, then went to the Ratty to pick up broccoli and back to my dorm to make lunch:

More good news: The “flame grilled veggie burgers” my cafeteria serves some days are Gardenburger variety, aka my favorite frozen veggie burger and the ones I’ve thus far been paying for. Well, that was awesome to know, but I wanted to use up my Trader Joe’s lentils before they went bad(do lentils even go bad?) so I stuck with them. I think any dish that is 1/4th composed of sauce is an automatic winner. I also love when the dining hall serves broccoli rather than me making it from the salad bar because the spears are huge.

That Clif bar had my name all over it, so I didn’t hesitate giving it a go. The flavor was right, but the bar threw me for a loop. You wouldn’t have guessed there were many fruit or nuts from the looks of it. The vanilla coating really saved it though; I’ll go for anything vanilla. I ate this mid-history class and I have to say that the more he talks about the midterm the more I feel prepared for it. That’s a good sign, right?

When I got back to my dorm I had hopes of plopping on the bed and shamelessly lounging around. Unfortunately, my roommate was taking an afternoon nap(who does this?) and I’m too prideful to be lazy in the company of others. Instead, I think I woke him up by making oats that I was dreaming about during epic poetry:

Chocolate cherry is one of my favorite flavor combo’s, so I knew this would be the bag with the first broken seal. But I’d be lying to you if I said I ate it like that.

Much better. And then, to eat. Holy chocolate cherry cow was this good! First of all, the cookies were amazing. Take note, ye who are blood obligated to get me a Christmas present: I want these in my stocking. The cherry essence was infused in the chocolate, and the cacao nibs were wowza! Besides that, the chocolate sunflower butter and cherry butter really complimented each other, though I might have to spring for the tried and true dried cherries next time I’m at Whole Foods. I didn’t think this bowl would tame this ravenous beast for the afternoon, but surprisingly I was set until dinner. I had wanted to go to the farmers’ market to get acorn squash but my legs and wallet decided homework would be a better way to spend the afternoon, and I obliged. By dinner time, I was ready to load my plate:

That was the last of the leftover salmon from Sunday’s lunch :,-( Getting 3 meals out of 1 is never bad, though. There was also an all-star line up of veggies being offered, so I went at those. The vegan chili they serve is very good here. But i really had “corn niblets” so I tried to just eat the beans around them–if it ain’t on a cob, it ain’t good corn. This had me feeling nice and bloated stuffed, which is good concentrating for homework blog reading.

Did anybody else find Heroes a bit… hmm, what’s the word… horny for Monday night television? I do not know what was with that opening scene. I don’t particularly think of that kind of stuff when I go to watch Heroes. Blood and explosions is more what I’m looking for. After that I made a pretty racy snack:

I don’t know why my bowl decided to be so segregated; it’s a bit depressing looking back. When I made it into a mess(unpictured), at least the peanut butter seemed to be accepted by both sides :-/ My Smart Balance is running so low. I’m going to have not one but two oats in a jar in my future 🙂 I made word documents for the 3 history essays I have; I don’t know why, but making documents always feels like a huge step even if… it’s not.

Have I made you salivate with these yet? That’s really cruel of me, considering I don’t think it’s possible to get outside of CA or MA. These whole wheat cinnamon raisin rolls from the bakery are to die for; if you find anything like it in your neck of the woods, go for it! For the “frosting” I did probably 2 parts cream cheese to 1 part greek yogurt. This made it creamy but also smooth and spreadable like real frosting. I also used 4 drops vanilla stevia to sweeten it just the right amount.

I fell asleep to Man Vs. Wild last night, so that was clearly a good sign I’d be beastly for the morning, right? I slept in until 7:10. a) When did that become sleeping in and b) God that felt good. I decided to pump up the pace today and ran 8 miles at 7.5 pace in 64:22. I find when you’re running fast just don’t look at the treadmill distance and go go go. I caught up with my gym friend for the last few miles; she was in Florida 2 weeks ago and it was 93 degrees! Boy was I jealous to hear that.

Breakfast today is literally all products for reviewing. I won’t say much about it now, because I like to give it a bit more time and thought than my hectic mind has right now(Greek class in 30 minutes!). I will say that the oatmeal smells appley, the peanut butter peanuty, and the yogurt doesn’t smell at all, so that’s all good signs! I hope today stays nice because I get out at 12 and hope to make a great Whole Foods trip! At the very least, I need some bulk bin oats; I have a new bag of Trader Joe oat bran but my organic steel cuts are on their last leg. More tempehtations and dried cherries might also be in my future.

Determination And A Bit Of Math

I don’t know what happened, but yesterday was not 24 hours. It was 8, maybe 10 tops, and I have the pictures(and not the productivity) to prove it. The day started off good enough in class. I realized for the first time just how many grad students and upperclassmen I have for classmates. If I don’t Ace all my classes, I at least will feel comforted that my curve is being screwed by people who already did the college thing. I went to the lunchroom for lunch and ended up throwing out most of the food I picked up. I felt bad, but I’m sure the cafeteria throws out wayyy more than what I did. Instead I had a delicious microwave made meal:

You don’t get this stuff from the dining hall. The Flamegrilled are my favorite Gardenburger, and they’re also vegan! I love simplicity of ingredients like that. The pilaf was very good; I’d had it before but don’t remember much more than liking it enough to buy it again. It had just the right amount of spice and salt, and a really fun play on texture. Tomatoes was the 2nd ingredient, which was odd because it didn’t seem like much there, but overall it was very tasty and filling, especially for something made in the microwave. 365 Steak Sauce just completes any dish–if you’ve tried it, you know what I mean.

Normally I’d have stayed in and watched Days and Rachael Ray. But the weather was not getting better with time here in New England, so I figured I might as well “get it over with”. As I started walking towards Whole Foods and F.Y.E., it started raining. This was entirely warranted:

Look, ma, no cardboard holder! Nothing was getting between me and my warmth… literally. I pretty much gulped this down over the mile walk in record time. I first stopped at F.Y.E. to buy myself a little treat, then to Whole Foods to buy a little more. Would you believe my Whole Foods doesn’t have any Vitaproducts? What’s with that? I needed bread–I had made that admittance to myself. I also got enamored by the fresh cut deli meat so I got 1/4 pound Honey Maple Turkey. Yum!

When I was walking back, it really started raining. Thank God I’m a talented power-walker along with runner. I stopped by the mail room where I had an argument with my mailbox; I can remember what the numbers are, I just can’t keep in mind what direction to turn the dial! So frustrating, and all I had waiting for me was a bank statement. I did however have a very special package I was thrilled to receive waiting for me at the window. It was the order I placed Sunday night!

Calling all apple experts: This was delicious! Except I have no idea what it was. Is there such a thing as a Golden Delicious? Because that would certainly fit the bill for this one. It had a great sweetness at first but then mellowed out with a slight tartness, but not too much. One of you, I’m sure, will keen on this one I’m guessing. For dinner, my day all came together. My friend had to head back to Boston earlier so dinner with him was off; it was also raining cats and dogs so I was more than happy to stay inside and eat what I bought earlier:

Can you practically taste Thanksgiving already? The honey maple turkey had such a nice salty sweet flavor. And the Trader Joe’s Cranberry Apple Butter was just perfect and the cream cheese really mellowed it all out in the end. Ideally this would have had some vegetable on the plate, but the only one I had in my dorm was a sweet potato I didn’t feel like nuking and I certainly was not swimming to the dining hall to get carrots and broccoli. While I ate this I reunited with The Food Network. Did you know you can watch full episodes of certain shows like Good Eats? I found out exactly why yogurt is “good eats” and why I’ll probably never be making my own any time soon. If I did make my own, though, it would probably be out of goat milk:

Because it sure makes for one hell of an ice cream. When I went down to the communal freezer, I said a little prayer along the lines of, “Just let it be there, damnit, or someone’s going to pay”. Don’t I make great prayers? At 6.99 a pint, you have to be a bit protective. Thankfully it was there so I scooped some out and put the itty-bit that’s left back in the freezer. I ate this to the tune of Survivor. I would so rock that show if I were on the island. The only problem is I don’t think I could stomach half the things they eat, and my metabolism would probably be racing so I would need to eat a lot. That would be a disaster. How is it that Russell has fooled them all? I couldn’t imagine watching these episodes after having gone through all that and been voted off and not feel a little cheated. For Grey’s I needed to get my probiotic on. I didn’t quite want to eat my other Attune bar yet; I want to save it for a “life could be worse. There could be no such thing as chocolate” moment, so I went with good ol’ Stonyfield instead:

Stonyfield with a kick, that is. The muffin butt to my carrot ginger muffin had mysteriously been squished, so it made it all the better to grind up and add to this. It came out a little too yogurty because I used a lot, but ’twas still good with some NuNaturals vanilla stevia and cinnamon. Meanwhile I was having a ton of fun playing with this new feature to the MyPyramid website. It’s kind of fun, but kind of wrong, too, in my opinion. I don’t see why whole milk yogurt would have 65 “extra calories”(i.e. empty). Yes, it has fat solids, but its not like it has the same effect on the body as refined sugar. To each their own.

Can you tell I needed something to butter me up? The Cinnamon Vanilla Sunflower Butter is ah-mazing. It has a very similar flavor to the Pepita Sun Butter but isn’t quite as sweet, I’m guessing in part because of the extra cinnamon. I also watched Matt Lauer on Jay Leno and decided a Today Show Host is my new official dream job. Why? Well first of all who doesn’t love all of them. And Matt was talking about going to bed early and getting up and doing his job first thing in the a.m. How about perfect for me?

This morning was not normal, and I’m a creature of habit, so naturally I was a bit annoyed. I set my alarm 30 minutes early to do a longer run, and slept in for the first 15. Ididn’t get the best nights sleep, so my hunger was unusually raging when I woke up, so I grabbed this before going to the gym:

I’m not accustomed to eating before exercise, so this felt a little weird. But I didn’t want to just ignore hunger. Hopefully this isn’t an every day occurrence and sleep gets better or I’ll be putting on a Freshman 15 overnight(literally). After running about 3 1/2 miles, nature called and I had to make a pit stop. Thankfully, I recorded how far I’d run but not how long, and when I got back to the machine it had reset–oi. I kept going and after another 5 miles the same thing happened. This time I took note of distance and time, but I was still pretty annoyed as you can imagine. By the end, I had ran 10 miles, and after adding up all my distances/times/estimated times I ran it in what I think was 85:28. It almost doesn’t “feel” like a 10 mile run after all the interruptions and oddities. But I kept determined all the way through and that’s what matters.

When I got back there was another disappointment: My basil plant practically died overnight. I’m trying to water him all he’ll take but I’m guessing it’s just not a hospitable environment for him right now(hell, or me, I’m cold!).

I really felt like I needed a “cleansing” breakfast this morning to shake off the bad and absorb the good, and that’s exactly what this was. Fruit and yogurt always feel nice and healthy, so I whipped up 1/2 a banana and unfroze some blueberries, mixed with Stonyfield and topped with jam–yum! The vitatop with the new seed butter was deeeelicious. The Sunflower Butter is very thick like most of Naturally Nutty’s products so it was hard to spread, but had a great flavor. It reminded me of Nutella except it’s not laden with sugar; in fact, sugar is one of the last ingredients. I’m going to try and convert all my peanut butter reviews into the new format this weekend, and I’ll be sure to add the new ones in. Speaking of this weekend, I’ve no clue what I’ll be doing. There’s so much to do at the Boston Regatta and campus and, at the same time, so much not to do so that I can catch up on work. I’ll have to figure that out today.

13.1 And Done

Believe it or not, coffee was not my well-rounded breakfast for yesterday. Rather, this was:

Oh, oh oh oh. Much better than a cup of coffee. I opened up a new pound of peanut flour to fix the yogurt, added pumpkin pie spice and stevia, and topped it with my new favorite granola. So so good. I love the little flax seeds in this which really add a super chewy crunch to them. I honestly had no motivation for peanut butter with my oats so I went with smart balance; I was kind of hoping for the omega-3’s in there to get some things moving that the coffee didn’t, if you catch my drift. By the way, I hope you all salt your oats. It adds a great last touch of flavor. I put plenty in at the beginning, and then add a little on the top at the end. It really goes great with sweet things like chocolate and maple nut butters.

On Sunday  I had a light bulb moment while running. Don’t you love those? Well not so much when the light bulb is that you completely forgot the whole reason you went to Trader Joe’s the day before. Yeah. Fun. To fix the situation, we took a trip yesterday morning back to Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods.

Because clearly you can’t go to one without checking out the other, right? We picked up a few things for lunch but mostly just browsed, as usual. I did end up getting some fun finds:

The Maple-Agave syrup, which I use for everything from oats to tofu, was the staple we forgot. I also found TJ Cranberry Apple Butter which I think is another seasonal item I can’t wait to give a go. Spooky Smores and a new batch of coffee were equally welcomed. As were these two Lifeway Lassi probiotic drinks which I got for 50 cents each with sales and coupons! I love a good bargain. For lunch I made a special request for snobby joes:

The hot dog bun was just a formality; this was so sloppy from the steak sauce/mustard/ketchup that I ate it primarily with a fork. The best thing about a meal seasoned to taste is that it’s always delicious. Apparently, when a bean or vegetable is the main part of the dish, my mom doesn’t think you need anything else. So we steamed up broccoli in the microwave and added chopped celery. Basically, this was a fiber-me-up lunch like no other. After lunch I didn’t want to spend too much time lounging around because anything I had to do was back at my dorm. I had a strawberry tooth and was dying to try the new Lassi drink I got in the car:

Unfortunately, this did not hit said strawberry tooth. I actually only took about 2 sips and put it down for good. It wasn’t thick at all, and the flavor was more of a generic sweetness than anything like strawberry. I usually at least finish products I’m not so fond of but seeing as how this was pretty much milk + sugar + probiotics, I let it go. I was particularly looking for something with a bit more of a tang like the kefir I got from my farmers’ market. Any recommendations out there for a good one?

After that bad experience I tried to just enjoy the car ride. I even managed to finish my readings and squeeze in a solid 30 minutes of not work. Oh I spoil myself. When we got to RI I asked to make a stop to grab something that would hit my strawberry tooth, and then we got to campus. I’ve realized I’m never in a great mood when I get back to my dorm, and it’s mostly because of this:



I could live without living out of a suitcase, or in my case, Whole Food, Stonyfield, and Abercrombie bags and a backpack. Thankfully the current plan for next weekend is for them to come to me if anything and I couldn’t be more grateful. After 30 minutes of folding, hanging, and organizing, I was done and could eat that special thing I mentioned:

This ice cream is the creamiest of the crop. It’s made with goat’s milk and is strawberry flavored with a balsamic vinegar swirl. It may sound gross but it works so so perfectly. And best yet, I’ve updated the product review page for it here so you can read all about it. I can’t wait until I have that going for every product, but right now it’s going at the rate of the Big Dig. Fortunately, all the great new product reviews I have coming up in the next few weeks will automatically be put into that format so look out for those.

At this time I very well could have gone to the gym and done some running or even cross-training. However, 2 things were on my mind. First and foremost, by 4:30 I certainly hadn’t been eating like a runner so I knew any flopping about on the treadmill I could do wouldn’t have been smart. I was asked if I kept track of my intake, and the answer is yes and no. I try to make sure I’m taking in 2500-3000 a day, but I don’t really keep track other than in my mind. And as for protein/carbs/fat ratio, I let the dice roll. I think most studies have shown that after a point of intake it’s all the same, and I definitely like to pass that point. The only thing I do do is keep sugars and refined grain low, which I really don’t have trouble with these days. My decission to lounge around was also persuaded by the fact that I hadn’t seen the newest Grey’s Anatomy. So, to fix the situation, I made a snack and did “work” to playing in the background:

Ignore what looks like dust; it was just english muffin residue. My body was weirdly craving cashew butter and I’m never one to deny a taste so I fixed up an english muffin. That episode of Grey’s, which I’m sure had low ratings against Pam and Jim, was perfect. It had funny and emotional going for it, even though all of the characters’ actions were pretty predictable(especially the patient dying of cancer in front of Izzy). Still I loved it. Unfortunately again, I don’t think anything could have made my computer run slower and I hardly got anything done. I really needed to step back and remember the days when logging onto the internet alone took 8 minutes of staring at a progress bar and breathe a sigh of relief when 5 open windows run perfectly.

I really didn’t have an appetite for dinner, but macaroni and cheese was at the dining hall. I took the inspiration and made a batch of my favorite brand(aka Trader Joe’s) along with some veggies from the dining hall. At the end I added a little maple syrup to everything, which I couldn’t taste but wish I added more of; I think maple, sweet potato, and cheese should all go beautifully together. Maybe maple powder would be more appropriate for the job. I think a big plate of veggies was what I needed in the end to get out of my eating funk.

I’m not even gonna lie and just admit I was in my PJ’s with a warm cup of coffee at 8pm ready to conk to Heroes. It was another don’t judge me moment but thankfully my roommate had gone off to study for the evening. The season is just starting to lose me with the crazy plot twistage with Claire. Sylar I could not care less about after all the drama he’s caused over the past few seasons. And the new hero with the power to see sounds is just a bit too out there. My night might have been better off with HIMYM.

3 things to say at this point. 1) The boy in that old has gotten so old they’re going to have to face the fact and call it 3 Men. 2) I brought 3 english muffins to my dorm because I didn’t think I’d eat them before they go bad. I ate 2 in 6 hours. Wtf? 3) Oh my God was that cranberry apple butter good. I’d never had it, so I was really excited to try it. It tasted just like that high-fructose corn syrup laden cranberry sauce from a can and I couldn’t have loved it more. It inspired me to make a whole new page for product reviews of my favorite jams. Definitely stocking up on these during the season. Inspired by Run, Eat, Repeat, I made the best thing my little dorm room hear could have asked for:

This was so good I had to go and make a recipe page for it. But basically all it was was a diced apple, 365 brand crunchy PB(nice and runny), and 25g Pumpkin Flax granola. Sometimes life’s not fair in a good way, and this is an example. It’s not fair that something that’s fruit, whole grains, and healthy fats can be so delicious, but I’m fine with it that it is. I’d be lying if I said a forkful of crunchy pb didn’t make its way straight into my mouth; I completely forgot how a little crunch and a little salt could marry so well.

This morning I did plenty of things different. I knew after yesterday I wanted to get a good, long run in; problem is Tuesday’s I’m usually pressed for time. I decided to set my alarm for 6:30, and got to the gym by 7. My aim was to run 90 minutes, but once I got going I just didn’t want to stop. I knew today was the day to break that next milestone, which I decided was to run a half marathon. I finished 13.1 miles in 1:49:51 after watching 2 shows on Cartoon Network and most of a Charmed episode. Surprisingly, I wasn’t famished for breakfast. In fact, nothing really drew me in, but I settled for a good ol’ muffin and cream:

Pretty much the only thing that kept me going last night and this morning was the thought that I’m out of class by 12, so I have plenty of time to lounge around and not have a care in the world today. Yeah, There’s Healthy Fats In That

One thing I(literally) could not live without are healthy fats. Not only are they vital for the body, but they help you feel satisfied. I’m also convinced no one ever will feel full if they don’t feed their cravings. And, let’s face it, we usually crave things with a good bit of fat. The trick is just to pick the good fats for us. And yesterday I was swimming in healthy fats(not really, because that would have been gross).

This is my 7th year taking Latin, and if I weren’t from a harder stock, it would be my last. The poetry of Catullus is so dirty that I’m wondering if this is even stuff worth translating. “Oral —” should not be words you have to hear your 50something year old Latin teacher say. Ever. The beloved sharpens-her-pencil-with-a-knife girl is also, surprisingly, very timid and bashful, so she made sure the poem she was going to translate aloud had very few swears in it.

After class I was surprisingly not hungry. I was a bit worried thinking it over after the fact that my breakfast, which ended up having more peanut butter but the same amount of calories as usual, wouldn’t hold me over as well as if those other calories came from fruit or something more voluminous. Well, let me tell you, the peanut butter held me over better. I ended up doing a bit of computer work and not eating until I got to my 1 o’clock class.

One of my favorite healthy fats is avocado. Over the Summer, I would add some to everything, and even make chocolate pudding with it. As you can imagine, avocado isn’t popular on the lunch room line, but they do have guacamole occasionally which still has plenty of the good fats. I mixed that with some black beans because I have high hopes of torturing the people next to me on the treadmill, and ate that with my favorite veggie burger. I was a bit disappointed to not see Emma again between classes. I haven’t seen her all week; maybe she’s adjusted her class schedule? That’d be a shame.

When I got done for the day I was a little surprised to find that my roommate had left for the weekend. I know he didn’t go home, because he lives in Montana, so I’m not sure where he went. Well, I’m not complaining about having the room to myself 🙂 I decided that even though it was gloomy and drizzeling, a Whole Foods trip was a necessity. I snacked on this on the way:

There was a lot to say about this bar. On the pro side, it had a great flavor, a good amount of healthy fats from almonds and pecans, and was decently low sugar at 14g. On the down side, honey was the second ingredient, it had an odd, soft texture I wasn’t expecting, and it was a bit bigger on calories than I was expecting for a snack bar of its size. Overall, it was good, but I wouldn’t pay what usually single granola bars cost for it.

This was another one of those times when I spent wayyy longer shopping than I should have. I definitely spent a good hour in there. I wanted a soft brie, but the smallest amount I could buy was 3.50’s worth, and I was really just wanting a taste. I found cinnamon raisin rolls by Zen Bakery that looked amazing, but seeing as how I just splurged on their muffins Wednesday, I thought I’d save those for next week. And I tried finding something for Cookie Friday, but nothing truly jumped out at me. Well that’s all I didn’t get, but here’s what I did get:

Of course, gotta keep my yogurt stash up and healthy. And on my way out I saw the most glorious thing on the salad bar: shredded salmon. I knew the options for the dining hall last night weren’t fish or even anything good, and here was salmon for 8 dollars a pound whereas a fillet cost 20 dollars per pound. My mom raised me not to miss a bargain like that, so I took a good portion for dinner. I also swung by a local cafe where I knew there’d be something amazing for Cookie Friday:

Or should I say Cupcake Friday. And yes, I’m going to try and convince you there’s healthy fats in that, too. This is made by a little company called The Cupcakerie in Rhode Island. It’s a very small company, so I’m lucky to have found somewhere to buy their products. They have some amazing sounding flavors, but today I was feeling like chocolate so I went for “The Vegan”. This has a chocolate base with a vanilla bean “buttercream” frosting, but of course it’s vegan so the base is made with heart-healthy canola oil and the buttercream is done with vegetable shortening. I always use canola oil for butter in my recipes because I also think it makes an airier product. There’s a lot of talk about vegetable shortening these days because of cheaply hydrogenated oils, but I’m thinking that a quality company like this probably uses good enough ingredients that I don’t have to worry about that. And while I generally try to avoid all things artificial including colors, I’m not so prude as to deny a little purple and green flower, especially when it’s piped so beautifully. If you look closely, you can actually see the vanilla beans in the frosting–amazing. It was about as good as I think I’ve made it sound, and then some.

After that fantastic experience, I was left for myself for dinner. My roommate’s out of town and some of my friends have already gone home for the weekend, so I kept it simple in the dorm room:

Obviously, I planned the salmon well in advance and it was very much worth it. Salmon is another great source of healthy Omega-3s. Wild is best, which is lower on Omega-3’s but has a much smaller chance of Mercury contamination. The rest of the dinner was equally good. I love how many of you eat the skin! I knew it was a nutritious and delicious part but I could never figure out why no one in my family ate it. Now I’m thinking they’re just a bit off, haha.

How great was Ghost Whisper last night? The last few episode I felt were dragging but they really bought the good old formula for a ghost story with a twist last night and I loved it. I also translated more dirty poetry, because what doesn’t make a Friday night more fun? Oh, how about this:

Pardone moi for the blurry pic but lighting is not on my side these days. This time I tried add 1/2 tablespoon cocoa powder to the peanut butter Oikos. Surprisingly, it was not as snacktastic as it might sound. I realized after this pic that the meal was missing two things: chocolate sauce and coffee. I got right to that, and watched reruns of Modern Family and Patricia Heaton’s new show, both of which, though I don’t find hysterical, are definitely solid “background noise” TV programs. Random much? My taste buds just did not know where to go, but it was all good. I think Macoun apples have some solid sweetness going for them; I’m more a fan of the Red Delicious or Honeycrisp but I can settle for a Washington Macoun(I can settle for anything in caramel sauce;-)). And could we possible do a post about healthy fats without talking about my favorite? Cream cheese Peanut butter. My PB heavy breakfast held my tooth for it off until pretty late, but it wouldn’t be bed time without peanut butter and the healthy fats it has along with protein and fiber. Even the more outrageous flavored peanut butter in my collection I make sure are high in healthy fats and low on sugar. Palm oil, flax, and other thickening agents are fine, so long as they aren’t hydrogenated. The funny thing about my body is it likes to realize it ran 10 miles at around 11 pm right as I’m trying to sleep, so I ended up eating a bit more after this which caused major digestion interruption over night. I guess you really shouldn’t eat that close to bed time.

Well the weatherman said it was going to be pouring this morning, so I slep in until 8:30 planning to hit the gym when it opened. When I woke up it was bright and sunny and warm. Umm, what? Well I stuck with the plan and did 7 on the tredmill in 57:35. This has definitely been my highest mileage week ever and it was well into the 50’s. Getting up so late clearly put me behind and I didn’t have a breakfast made until 10:30!

Yowza yum. Unfortunately, I don’t think I can make the claim that cream cheese or anything cream is a healthy fat. However, I do love and would never give up my lowfat cream cheese or lowfat plain yogurt. The good thing about cream is it takes a very small amount to make things taste decadent(don’t you love that word when describing food?). If you ever have to make the choice between lowfat and nofat dairy, go with lowfat. The fat helps absorb the nutrients in the dairy, usually makes for  a less artificial product, and jut tastes better. Well the muffin had the savory going for it so I needed some salty sweet. The combo of Fakin’ Bacon and maple syrup was just the thing. I microwaved it a little longer than usual and it got extra crispy–holy not-made-from-a-pig-or-cow! Now my room literally looks like a tornado hit it and my dad should have been here 4 minutes ago. Fun times. Gotta run!
