Soups And Raw Eating

Posted on January 2, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update, Recipe | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

I’m glad you guys found my format for the last post witty; I’d like to do stuff like that more often but it’s something that comes and goes(mostly goes). Maybe it was because I was watching sassy Sabrina, The Teenage Witch while working out? Maybe… For lunch my mom threw together for herself chicken noodle soup, which gave me a major craving for the stuff. After looking at what she made hers with, I actually had no clue what half the ingredients were(me, the person who has gone shopping for xanthan gum) and the ones I did recognize I was not willing to touch. Instead, I tried to supplement that with a replacement soup.

Amy's Lentil Vegetable Soup

Broccoli And Cornbread With Raw Cheddar And Vegan Organic Bac'Uns

Amy’s soup was only OK. I added dehydrated onions, pepper, and salt to it to boost the flavor(and it was already a sodium bomb). Really, though, it did not impress or feed my craving at all. On the side I had leftover killer cornbread and broccoli. Is microwaving raw cheddar cheese counterproductive? Something tells me that it is, but it was better melted. The Bac’Uns again were only OK; they had more of a general smokiness than a bacon flavor. By the way, I ate it along with this.

Looney Toons Utensils And A Scratch Ticket

Because if microwaving raw cheese isn’t hypocritical, maybe baby utensils and adult entertainment is–not a problem. After lunch it was still snowing but less so than it will be for the next few days, so we went to TJMaxx to return a sweater. Fun stuff, isn’t it? I was not so interested in the clothes shopping so I ran in to Sudbury Farms(a grocery store) right next door to grab a few things.

Full Circle Organic Chicken Noodle Soup

Such as this soup. Meat cravings cost money when you’re only willing to go free-range; good thing I don’t get them much. I was actually grabbing stock and whole wheat egg noodles first and then asked myself “Do I really want to actually buy a big chicken? And would I be motivated enough to make it all from scratch?”. Short answer: Buy the canned stuff. When we got home I could not wait to make an afternoon meal.

Organic Chicken Noodle Soup In A Parisian Soup Bowl

Chocolate Vitamuffin

With a muffin on the side, to make it a well-rounded meal ūüôā The soup definitely hit the spot, despite having like 2 pieces of chicken in it. Really, I probably could have drank chicken broth and been happy at that point. I picked up that bowl in Paris last year and thought it would be a fun time to use it. It fits, no? I don’t actually remember eating soup that trip… Anyway, afterwards I planned on making some roasted nuts, but realized if I did that I’d be all out! I hate running out of things which is why I usually have 2 cans of everything. Instead, I found another recipe I wanted to make.

Ingredients

I decided to go with Averie’s almost raw chocolate chip cookie dough balls. I think I was in love with this recipe when I saw it had 4 ingredients(5 with vanilla powder) and I could make it all in my food processor. I used 3oz cashews, 30g oats, 3 tablespoons maple syrup, and 2 tablespoons chocolate chips.

Raw Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Cookies

These came out the perfect¬†consistency. I made mine into 10 90-calorie cookies rather than into balls because I just like them more that way(Oh, the things that could be said here…). Of course, I needed to taste them and spoil my appetite ūüėČ

Raw Chocolate Chip Cookie

They were really good considering how simple they are. They kind of tasted simply like cashew butter; maybe next time I’ll add more vanilla and a touch of sea salt. Or I could put these in yogurt or ice cream like real cookie doughs. I’m liking the possibilities. While I was making(and eating) these, my mom made dinner for everybody.

Turbot With Smoked Salt, Baked White Potato With Habanero Salsa, Green Veggies With Nutritional Yeast

We picked up turbot at Whole Foods in Dedham even though we didn’t(still don’t) know that much about it. It tasted like any sort of white fish so I added some of my new, fancy shmancy salt to perk it up with smokiness. I’m liking the nutritional yeast more and more a as I eat it. And I don’t think I’ve had salsa on a white potato since Summer–long overdue. For dessert, I have wayyyy too many possibilities going around my mind. This should be fun…

By the way–I just looked around and asked if I was the last person not in my pajamas. My mom said “Yeah, I didn’t want to say anything because I thought it might be rude, but…” and my dad asked “Are you feeling alright?”.

I’ma Survivah

Posted on December 20, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Correction: I’m watching Survivor. The finale is on tonight! Anyone else excited? At this point, I kind of want Rusell to win; I mean, anyone who screws his way to the final 4 deserves it. Otherwise, my day was snow packed.

Snow

I didn’t even have to get up to capture that as I was blogging. Can I reiterate how amazing Boulevard’s¬†hot chocolate with vegan fluff was? It was really really good. For lunch, I think the original plan was spoon roast? My stomach was not up to meat, however, and neither was someone else’s, so we played it safe with lentils.

Snobby Lentils, Carrots And Parsnips With Salsa, Broccoli

I always associate lentils with massive bloating and a huge feeling of being full but for some reason this didn’t do it; in fact, all day I’ve been sort of on and off the fence of hunger when I’m eating and when I’m not. I think all those brussels last night might have funked things up but I bet it will pass in a few days with fiber and regular exercise. I was still a bit hungry, so I went for a dessert.

2% Chobani With Dark Chocolate Raspberry Jam

Me? Having trouble getting 2 sources of probiotic a day? Not with tasty jams like this. So perfectly creamy and sweet(I added a little vanilla stevia to the base). After that I continued to put my things in their proper place, lazed around on Twitter, and did some behind the scene blog work I’ve been meaning to since… Oh, I don’t know, October? Yikes. I had another amazing(and¬†fibrous) snack.

Chocolate Brownie Gnu Foods Bar

Normally, it’s just a bar. But when you stick it in the microwave, it get’s kissed by heaven. Seriously, this was too perfect; I had the chocolate chips boiling they were so hot, and the outside got a little crusty–yum! I had to sprinkle a little stevia on top, though, because these really aren’t that sweet on their own. Well after my dad snowblowed us out, he needed to go out. Of course, I tagged along for the opportunity to be free. I grabbed a snack before I left.

Kim & Scott's Pizza Pretzel

Kim & Scott's Pizza Pretzel

A very savory snack. I had a coupon for a free box of Kim & Scott’s pretzels and after looking at the flavors I could find near me pizza seemed like the best choice. You can read my full review here, or just know that this was super doughy and delicious. A little skimpy on the sauce, but overall a winner. It was also whole wheat with fiber and protein, so I felt rather good while hitting up Job Lot(for cheap goodies), Price Chopper(for a guest post project), and CVS(camera batteries). I think I said yesterday we wouldn’t have time to shop at all before Christmas? Yeah that was a lie.

Groceries

I got a few things for baking projects you will see(yeast and peanuts), some more decaf tea because apparently I’m as addicted to that as I am coffee, some peppermint to get into the holiday spirit, and a new peanut butter! It scored a NuVal 49, which is HUGE for peanut butter, so I wanted to see what all the fuss is about. I’ll let you know how it is once I give it a whirl. When I got home, other people went out, so I figured a snack before dinner was in order.

Apple Slices, Cinnamon Raisin Toast With White Chocolate Wonderful

But then once they got back my mom decided her stomach wasn’t up for dinner and I’d be on my own. Not a problem, as that’s how I’ve rolled for the past 4 months. And it gave me a chance to a) try something I’ve been mulling over in my mind for a while and b) stay veg for the day.

Amy's Tomato Bisque

White Chocolate Chickpeas, Asparagus

The soup was on sale 1.25 a can at Whole Foods; it wasn’t bad. It wasn’t particularly flavorful but it was a good, basic tomato soup that I could have herbed up. What I really wanted to taste was the white chocolate chickpeas. Yes. You read that right. I melted down a tablespoon of white chocolate chips and tossed it with canned chickpeas, and it was excellent. It was even better once the chocolate hardened up a bit to cling to the chickpeas. It’s not quite a “dessert” flavor because there’s not that much chocolate; what it’s more like is chickpeas in a sweetened cream sauce. I will definitely work on these and make them again.

Apparently Montana isn’t as big a fan of Survivor, because at one point he stepped on the remote and turned on the Home Shopping Network. That dog needs to learn his priorities.

Let’s Play Jeopardy

Posted on December 10, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Before we get into the game, I wanted to mention my guest post over at Christina’s blog with a brand new recipe! It’s on my favorite subject ūüėČ Can you guess what that is?

Answer: Sweet potatoes, soup, lentils

Carrot Cashew Ginger Soup, Sweet Potato, Snobby Joe Lentils, Ginger Zevia

What does a 90 year old woman eat for lunch on a rainy day? Nope, but darn close. And I’m OK with that. I think they need to thicken this soup up a bit with something but the flavor is really good. And I think I could eat lentils for every meal if that wouldn’t make things around here very smelly.

Answer: Ellen DeGeneris

Who is a funny lesbian? Yes, but what we were looking for was who is my least favorite afternoon talk show. So after Days and Rachael Ray I had no problem grabbing this bar and stepping out:

Peanut Butter Z-Bar

Oh portable peanut butter, you make me so happy. Anyway, I had finished with my Epic Poetry paper and headed to the library to print it and then the Classics house to drop it off.

Answer: Awkward head nod of acknowledgement

What is something you always regret? But of course. And yet, who can help but do it in reaction? I ran into my roommate at the library and gave a sort of half nod of acknowledgement which must have looked awkward. Oh well. The more you think about these things after doing them the more it’s just torture. I dropped off my paper(wahoo!) and then went up and down Thayer street, stopping at Blue State to try their tea.

Berry Tea

Answer: Berry flavoring

What is something I don’t like? Yes. So why did I order their berry tea? Stumped myself on that one. But after I asked the man to point out the decafs I felt obligated to just pick one and go with it. It wasn’t bad, but I definitely like gingery or lemony or black teas better. Basically, any other tea, to be exact ūüėČ

Question: Sigma Kai

Who are the rowdiest frat on campus? Nope. But they win most spirited.

Sigma Kai

Seriously, how cool is this? It’s also right near my dorm so I see it quite often. AND they have a serious sound system which normally is for parties but they blast Christmas tunes through, too. Awesomeness. I picked up stuff for dinner and made my way back into my warm and dry dorm to make some oats.

Pumpkin Oats With Smart Balance And White Chocolate Chips

That also helped to warm me up. And when doesn’t melty, salty peanut butter feel good? Never’s what I think, too ūüôā

Answer: Dr. Phil has had a vasectomy and reverse vasectomy

What is something I really didn’t want to know? Unfortunately, I watched his show, and he shared that. Really? Ew. I never watch him usually. but I got to remembering how my mom loved him and I would watch out of necessity. It’s not that he doesn’t give good advice; he just has on the stupidest guests whose problems are so obvious. I was still pretty set from my oatmeal for dinner but I could not resist gobbling this down anyway because of how amazing it is.

Answer: Vegetarian Philly Cheesesteak

Vegetarian Philly Cheesesteak, Pepper Strips, Sunflower Cheddar Flatbread

What is the tastiest contradiction ever? Ding, ding, ding. we have a winner in this dinner, you crazy sinner. I had this for lunch Tuesday, and afterwards when I thought about it, I realized this meal made me feel like Julia Child; if you asked me what I love after I had eaten this, my eyes would have rolled in the back of my head and I’d of said “I love to eat!” It’s that good. And all it is is 4oz or so Lightlife sausage style meat, cooked onions, and a slice of American cheddar cheese. I love food.

Answer: Entertaining

What is Modern Family? or what is naturally colored coated candies bleeding in yogurt? Both!

Vanilla Soy Yogurt With Milk Chocoalte Peanut Sundrops

Sooo good. Carby overload with the chocolate and sweetened soy yogurt probably, but still so so good. I got a good amount of work done on my next paper but took the night easy having finished the other one. If I had it my way, I’d take all my tests tomorrow to just get them done with, but it doesn’t work that way. Then I got extremely snacky and had this right before bed

Small Bowl Of Oats With SB PB, Yogurt With Milk Chocolate Peanut Sundrops, Advent Chocolate, Milk Chocolate Orange Slice

At least it was a well balanced meal with fruit(the orange slice) and dairy(milk chocolate). I think the magic of the milk chocolate peanut sundrops only works with soy yogurt because this wasn’t as good; oh well, now I know. Nothing ends the night better, though, than melty, salty peanut butter. That definitely had me sleeping tight.

Answer: 10 Miles

How far did I run this morning? Well 14, if you must know. I woke up super energized and just hit the gym ready to run. My legs felt like a rag doll’s at first but I got into it sometime around Pokemon and just kept going without any running fuel or anything. It was a little slower than yesterday(1:59:33) but still felt good. I had an odd craving for breakfast I won’t even mention but instead settled for something more traditional.

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Mighty Maple, Tempeh Bacon, And White Chocolate Chips

Yogurt With Mint Chocolate Orange Goji Cookies

Isn’t white chocolate, peanut butter, and bacon tradition for everyone? I restrained myself with the white chocolates; just because I’m running doesn’t give me liscence to turn breakfast into dessert in my opinion(though this tasted close enough! :-)) I love these goji gourmet cookies; the flavor is so freshy and perky and perfect for the morning. And now I’m trying to be a good roommate and not make too much noise but I’m also trying to watch Live! With Regis And Kelly because Jeff Probst is on and I’m a Survivor addict as you know.

Answer: A giveway

What is to come this afternoon? Come back and check to see ūüėČ

Kicking Off The Month Right

Posted on December 2, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

December is one of, if not my absolute, favorite months. Why? Snow, Christmas, family, vacation–you get the picture. Thankfully yesterday was perfect for kicking things off. My breakfast(pumpkin oatmeal with smart balance peanut butter and maple syrup and a chobani with blueberry jam and double chocolate pillow) filled me up amazingly well. I was not at all hungry after class got out, so I thought I’d seize the opportunity to go to Eastside Market and Whole Foods! Would you believe me if i told you it’s been over 2 weeks since I walked that way? It has! On the way, I came across the best car:

LDYINRED

Would it be awful to paint this car blue as a very involved April Fool’s joke? Probably. First up was Eastside, which looked mostly the same. I noticed they had brown rice sushi now, which might or might not be new, and for less than $5! I grabbed some for lunch and moved through fairly quickly getting just “the essentials”. Then I hopped over to Whole Foods and was psyched to find this.

December Whole Deal

There’s a new Whole Deal! But it has some pretty awful coupons ūüė¶ I would majorly suggest stocking up on the old ones before you can’t get them anymore. Again, I tried to be quick and dirty shopping here so as to get back to my dorm. Thankfully, it’s a small Whole Foods and not much changes. I couldn’t even find a single Tofurkey roast ūüė¶ Maybe hunting season’s over? I got back at 1:30 so as to only miss half of Days, and unloaded the loot.

Groceries

The Chobani and banana were from the dining hall bought with meal points. Otherwise, it was all from my grocery fund. And while none of it I had a coupon for, I tried to just get sale items and things that were “essential”. Here’s a question: when did I become the type of person who considers fake bacon an essential? The only thing that was really an impulse buy was the Carrot Cashew Ginger soup which, for 75 cents a serving, I was willing to try. I also got this one last thing:

Advent Calender

An advent calender! Frankly, I was a little saddened to find that the 99 cent advent calenders my mom always got us had artificial ingredients I couldn’t eat ūüė¶ Thankfully, this one is made with all-natural ingredients and fair trade cocoa to boot! Here’s to a delicious 24 days.

Brown Rice Tuna And Salmon Sushi, Carrot Cashew Ginger Soup

My lunch was simple yet amazing. The sushi wasn’t bad at all for $4.89, although I only ever really eat sushi for the fish. I honestly couldn’t care less for the bit of whole grains and small amount of avocado they give you that hardly adds up to a veggie. The soup was delicious! Albeit a little thin. I think I just like stews and thick bowls of oatmeal, but the flavor was rich.

My afternoon felt like a whirlwind. I hadn’t answered emails or read blogs since 9pm Monday night right before my lock-out experience. Rachael Ray, Ellen, Oprah–I think I was there for them all but I wasn’t really “present”. Before I knew it it was 4:30 and I had a rather odd snack craving.

Acorn Squash With Maple Syrup, Cinnamon, And Sea Salt

For some people(here’s looking at you, Heather), acorn squash might not be so weird a snack. For oatmeal and peanut butter boy here, it was. Nonetheless, I complied, cut up my squash, and steamed it in the microwave, adding a little seasoning at the end. It was perfectly spot-hitting. A little later on the munchies came again and I wanted some protein.

Greek Yogurt With Pumpkin Butter And Peanut Butter Chips

18 grams to be exact. For this I just mixed a plain Chobani with Trader Joe’s pumpkin butter and clear liquid stevia and then added on Sunspire chips–yum! It was such a sweet treat. I love the pumpkin butter with peanut butter for a fall flavoring. As for protein, I don’t generally keep close track of all that stuff; I just aim to have at least 3 high-protein sources through out the day, which often end up being greek yogurt or tofu.

For dinner, the online menu for the dining hall was not promising. Really, there was nothing since even one of the main vegetables was beets which I’ve sworn off for 2 weeks. I still wanted to catch up with my friend, Adam, however, since it’d been nearly 2 weeks since we last had dinner with Thanksgiving being last week. Thankfully, he was fine with bringing takeout to my room, where I whipped up this dish:

Tofurkey Loaf Slice, Broccoli, Carrot Cashew Ginger Soup, Orange Zevia

So I like the soup, wanna fight about it ūüėČ This was a delicious way to serve up leftovers. I was thinking of adding some flax to the soup to thicken it up but I hate playing around with things and so let it be in the end. We caught up on each other’s Thanksgiving and groaned about how ridiculous these next few weeks of work will be and then said our goodbyes to “write papers”(which in my case meant blog). I’m not a terribly political person so I was happy to skip the¬†Presidential¬†address¬†for some serious snackage.

Chocolate Vitatop With Shortcut Cream Cheese Frosting

Oh my God. What have I released? This was sooooo good. Seriously, has anyone else tried this frosting? If anyone made it vegan with Tofutti I would be mondo impressed/intrigued to hear how it worked out. The Biggest Loser was inspiring, as always. I couldn’t wait to see them do a marathon! That’s really going to make me feel lazy and like I need to get a move on that, haha. The Biggest Loser must make me hungry because at 10 I made a large(r) snack.

Whole Wheat Vegan Cinnamon Roll With Cream Cheese Frosting, Yogurt With Cherry Butter, Dried Cherris, And Advent Chocolate

Advent Chocolate In Smart Balance

If I weren’t addicted to running and a health eater I’m sure I’d be driving my doctor nuts. The roll tasted just like a cinnabon; Afterwards I had a better idea for the chocolate. I love how the advent candy was in the shape of a heart. I hope they’re all fun like that. I pretty much gave up work after this(note how there’s a notebook under that food) and just focused on getting a good night’s sleep. I was also inspired to ask myself after watching the Biggest Loser contestants run a marathon why I hadn’t tried to run farther recently? Unfortunately my answer sucked: time. I’ve just always been focused on getting back to my dorm and making oatmeal too much to go the extra mile. And so this morning that’s exactly what I’m going to do(literally). I’m going to challenge myself to go 16 miles. If I have to walk or slow down I’ll let myself and I’ll give myself all the time I need. But that’s why I’m up posting at 6:30–to take a bit of time pressure off as I head out right now. Wish me luck!

So so many giveaways…

Popchip giveaway! Snap, crackle, POP!

Some very sweet nut butters to enjoy.

And an awesome regions best giveaway!

A Normal Morning Is A Good Morning

Posted on October 29, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Yesterday was dark and pooring. All day. Warning: There was a lot of flash¬†necessary¬†in the making of this post. Eating a larger than usual breakfast later than usual did not have me very hungry after Latin class. Unfortunate because that’s my hour to eat. I¬†perused¬†the Farmers’ Market and found some acorn squash but my food budget for the rest of October is 92 cents so I passed on it all and went for the free stuff in the dining hall.

Stir Fry Tofu And Vegetables, Tomato And Cannelli Bean Soup

Stir Fry Tofu And Vegetables, Tomato And Cannelloni Bean Soup

I ate this in Greek History class. Or rather, I ate the soup and the over oily vegetables. I didn’t even bother with the tofu; apparently, if it’s not drenched in maple and mustard, it’s not appealing to me. The veggies in their oily mess were bad enough as was. Greek History class was so boring I almost fell asleep in the last 5 minutes. We had a TA teaching the lesson; the regular professor may be stubborn and¬†opinionated¬†but he’s entertaining. When I got out of class I needed to grab this:

Orange Zevia

Orange Zevia

Despite the fact that my next class was in the opposite direction, I rushed to my dorm to grab this and then ran to class. Don’t ask me why, but after that failure of a lunch I was craving something sweet and carbonated. If I didn’t have these babies I might have been weak enough to go for a diet Sprite. The next class was slightly better, but when half the students fail to show up you feel a little suckered. Obviously no one wants to go to class in a deluge but we do.

The rest of the afternoon honestly had me wanting to just call my mom and beg her to bring me home for the night or at least dinner. I was soaking wet, and my roommate was napping. Apparently, he caught¬†streptococcus. Our room smelled awful, like a nursing home, where I volunteered 2 hours a week for 3 months last year so I would no. I couldn’t turn on the lights because I didn’t want to wake him, so I resorted to making oats in the dark.

Oats With Chocolate Chips And Mighty Maple

Oats With Mighty Maple And Chocolate Chips

Is there anything more calming than a big bowl of oats? Maybe ones with chocolate and maple syrup. Those two flavors are dynamite in this New Englander’s heart. How has nobody made a maple chocolate bar? I ate this in the dark watching Oprah with no sound. Did I mention how much I wanted to call my mommy? I also had the great pleasure to do homework in the dark, because Ancient Greek letters aren’t easy enough to read in the light. My roommate finally woke up at 5:30, by which point my eyes felt like a mole person’s when the lights came on. I made a snack to hold me over for dinner.

Banana Goodness Bread With Banana Peanut Butter And Oikos

Banana Goodness Bread With Banana Peanut Butter And Oikos

Obviously, this bread was meant to be with this peanut butter. Probiotics are supposed to help against illnesses so I was thinking this would help be not get strep throat(or I was thinking, damn that’ll be good). At 6:27 my friend called to say essentially ditch me for our dinner at 6:30. If this was a few hours earlier, I wouldn’t have minded in the least(I was half planning on ditching him because I knew I’d be a Debby Downer at dinner). But 3 minutes early was just annoying; think of all the extra time I could have spent in my pajamas! I went to the dining hall and picked up dinner, went back to my room, got undressed for the night obscenely early, and ate.

Steamed Carrots, Broccoli, And Peas, Baked Sole

Steamed Carrots, Broccoli, And Peas, Baked Sole

This was exactly what I needed. I felt healthier and more myself with every bite. All the veggies tasted fresh and crisp, which only happens about 20% of the time with the dining hall. What was actually on the line was Sole stuffed with spinach and breading. I’m not a stuffing person(except for Whole Foods stuffing which is incredible and almost back!) so I took 2 and¬†unstuffed¬†them. The whole dish felt nice and light. If I were in the mood for some carby carbs Trader Joe Mac N’ Cheese would have gone well here, but I needed this meal just as it was.

I know I wasn’t the only one excited by The Charlie Brown Halloween Special on last night. Don’t lie. I’m such a sucker for the seasonal shows. I could honestly watch It’s A Wonderful Life again and again. The downside of a light dinner is that you’re hungry not too long later. The upside is dessert’s what’s best anyway.

Greek Yogurt With Chocolate Sauce, Dried Cherries, And Goji Chery Cacao Cookies

Greek Yogurt With Chocolate Sauce, Dried Cherries, And Goji Chery Cacao Cookies

Having a sick roommate, I need to bolster my immune system with these amazing cookies, right? Goji berries are my excuse for everything. But seriously this was soooo good. Like a brownie sundae or something¬†ridiculous. Modern Family was equally hilarious last night:¬†“I am loose. I am fun. Remember breakfast for dinner last week? My idea.” and my favorite¬†“Mitchell, she is your family; of course she’s going to be¬†judgmental¬†and condescending.” We need as many shows to show us how crazy and¬†dysfunctional¬†we are as we can get; why did Everybody Love’s Raymond go off the air?

October 28th 019

Vitabrownie With Cream Cheese, English Muffin With White Chocolate Wonderful And Peanut Butter Cookie Spread

Wow am I easy to read or what? Clearly, cream cheese and white chocolate wonderful were on the brain. If you’ve never tried a vitalicious chocolate product with cream cheese… well that one may be an acquired taste ūüėČ Speaking of cream cheese, I wasn’t quite done yet.

October 28th 001

Toast With Cream Cheese And TJ Pumpkin Butter

Not really toast because I was too lazy to bust out the toaster at 10:50, this was eaten in bed and then promptly put me to sleep, because I’m classy like that.

Nothing remarkable happened this morning, and that felt great. I rolled out of bed at 6:50, still felt full from dinner dessert, and hit the gym, just like ol’ times. I ran a nice 8 miles in 67:25 while watching the usual shows and studying up for my history midterm tomorrow(my tiny handwriting isn’t exactly easy to read in motion, either). Because I was so on top of everything, I got back to my room at 8:30, giving me 2 full hours before class. I even was the first person to the showers!(aka, I didn’t have to smell the remnants of the hockey player who lives 3 doors down. What could be more glorious than this normalcy, you ask?

Breakfast was a conglomerate of super foods.

October 28th 003

Almost Empty Mighty Maple Jar

It was finally time to throw the last punch here. And Mighty Maple is definitely a superfood; Holly ran a marathon and she eats up this stuff like there’s no tomorrow. Of course, we all know what empty jars mean…

October 28th 007

Pumpkin Oats In A Jar

Oats are a super grain and pumpkin is a super vegetable… or is it a fruit? I’m just going to say vegetable even if that’s wrong. Now if only they made peanut butters in jars that you could cook in, then this would really be an¬†efficient¬†meal. More super foods from super companies:

October 28th 011

Goji Gourmet's Goji Orange MintChip Cookies, Attune Coffee Bean Dark Chocolate Bar

I didn’t actually feel like yogurt this morning(I know, shocker, right?) but I still wanted to get my probiotics so I snatched this attune bar from Attune Foods. I think that’s technically a breakfast food even though it’s chocolate because it has coffee in it. And it’s definitely a super food with the antioxidants from dark chocolate; can’t really prove me wrong with that logic ūüėČ I also tried a new flavor of Goji Gourmet‘s cookies. I was a little worried this one would have a muddled flavor with everything going on but oh my God was it good. Somehow you totally got the mint, goji, orange, and chocolate essence in every bite. Yum! Now I feel invincible from the germs lurking about.

Today I’m thinking of enjoying the not rain with a trip to Whole Foods and Eastside Market to see the new sales. I have 92 cents left in my food budget for October… We’ll see how that goes.

Speaking of Goji Gourmet‘s cookies, there’s a contest out there for them so go on over and enter! I hope you win, or better yet, order some for yourself because these really are sooooo good!

Caffeine Hangover

Posted on October 22, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Alright, folks. I have a midterm in 2 hours so let’s make this snappy(jk, I write most of this the night before anyway ;-))

Yesterday felt like one big caffeine hangover after Wednesday’s amazing night. The sad thing was I didn’t even have any caffeine besides what was in the food itself; I’m such a light-weight. Being at home yesterday turned out not to be such an inconvenience.¬†My dog had a doctor’s appointment halfway towards Brown so I ended up just hitching a ride that way. I would have preferred if it wasn’t so damn early that I had to run, shower, eat, and blog within a couple of hours, but I made do.

Montana

Montana

I would like to say he was big and brave, but he’s totally a wimp. He was shaking the moment he knew where he was, and all they were doing was following up on an ear infection. He has a lot of infections/allergies. He’s also grumpy a lot and likes to sit on the couch near the TV. Hmm, maybe that thing they say about owners and dogs is true. I ended up getting back to campus exactly at the time I would have got out of class had I had it. I swung by The Ratty because I was starving, and put away all my loot from the night before as I ate:

2 Eggs With Ketchup And Steak Sauce, Black Bean CousCous Salad, Zuchinni, Brocoli

2 Eggs With Ketchup And Steak Sauce, Black Bean CousCous Salad, Zuchinni, Brocoli

Did you know eggs scrambled in a bowl and microwaved for a few minutes will cook and fluff? I didn’t know that, but I’m glad they do, because I really wanted something savory for the steak sauce to go on and I was out of vegan burgers(from vegan burgers to eggs. How ironic…). I am loving Trader Joe brand ketchup. It’s a lot less sweet and a lot more vinegary than other brands I’ve had. This is a highly recommended TJ product if you have one near you.

All that party-hardying made me very behind on google reader, but I had(somewhat) caught up by 3pm. Isn’t that a great feeling? Not when you haven’t studied, but otherwise yet. For once, I actually felt like going to Whole Foods was a chore. I tried to convince myself I had enough food, but surprisingly opening and closing the fridge 3 times doesn’t make bread appear. I grabbed a snack and hit the road.

Multibran Vitatop With Mighty Maple

Multibran Vitatop With Mighty Maple

Dear, Miss Everythingtarian

Please stop making so many tasty dishes using Mighty Maple. It’s making me crave it at an alarming rate and run through my jar. Otherwise, I might have to stop reading your hilarious blog. It’s not me you, it’s you me.

Anyway, it was a great day for a walk in N.E. The weather was sooo good yesterday, it felt like Spring! I walked around Whole Foods a lot(as usual) but did major self editing at the check out and walked out with the “bare essentials”:

Cinnamon Raisin Rolls, Plain Oikos

Cinnamon Raisin Rolls, Plain Oikos

I’m not going to lie. It definitely hurt putting back other things like my Gardenburgers, Sweet Scoops frozen yogurt, and the non-existent¬†salmon from the salad bar. On the other hand, I knew I had 15 dollars after this to make last for the rest of October before I start digging into. I resisted the urge to call anyone to rant/tantrum, and just admired my new shopping bag:

Oikos Grocery Bag

Oikos Grocery Bag

Isn’t it nifty? I like it a lot more than the Stonyfield one because it’s more my color, fabric, and yogurt. I also love the new designs for the Oikos containers, but sadly they only had those out for the 5.3oz ones. I tried getting back quickly so that I could make a quick snack because I was stahhving and–hopefully–study. The latter didn’t happen but boy was the former a success!

Fluffernutter Oats With Banana Peanut Butter

Fluffernutter Oats With Banana Peanut Butter

I decided to test out my new¬†Banana Peanut Butter sent to me by¬†Sunland. By test, I really mean I threw this one to the lions; fluffernutter oats have a huge place in my heart and this peanut butter needed to fill some big shoes. Right when I opened the jar I noticed 2 promising things: it smelled like fresh sliced banana bread with peanut butter slathered on it and it was thick and smooth like PB&Co. That was all promising and a good indication for the peanut butter itself. It didn’t melt quite like I was hoping/expecting, but the flavor was spot on. It reminded me of having a sandwich on Wonder Bread in kindergarten. If any nut butter can do that over whole grains, it’s a winner in my book.

These oats were good, but not filling. That was out of the ordinary, but thankfully dinner was right around the corner and I could wait for this:

Snap Peas, Tofu With Mustard, Sweet Potato, Carrot Soup

Snap Peas, Tofu With Mustard, Sweet Potato, Carrot Ginger Soup

I wish I could say this was as good as it should have been but it never all clicked. The snap peas were at least not overcooked and had some snap. The sweet potatoes were good(duh!) but I’m actually developing a taste for them microwaved. The tofu was… tofu. But a little TJ mustard(yes, I packed my own mustard) perked it up. i didn’t even finish the soup; it seemed promising with carrot, ginger, and honey, but it never all clicked.

When I got back to my dorm, simply doing internet stuff took almost 2 hours. My computer was running sooo slow. I had to grab this while I was waiting for an update:

Zevia Cola

Zevia Cola

I didn’t quite realize why I was craving it for a while, until I noticed 45mg caffeine on the ingredient list. That couldn’t be too much, right? Well it’s the amount in a light roast regular cup of coffee. Yikes. My remedy for this was to gulp it, of course, because then the caffeine would enter my system early. Wtf? Bad judgement call here. We live and we learn–ain’t that the truth. I also watched Modern Family and Survivor. How hilarious was this weeks Modern Family? Not many shows make me laugh like that one did. I am definitely going to need to illegally download buy this season when it comes out. Speaking of Miss Mighty Maple Addict

Pumpkin Oats With Butter Toffee Peanut Butter And A Vegan Pumpkin Molasses Cookie

Pumpkin Oats With Butter Toffee Peanut Butter And A Vegan Pumpkin Molasses Cookie

You know I could never stop reading that blog and am full of hot air; I’d miss out on killerness like this. It’s such a smooth and sweet texture play, it’s ridiculous! I’m almost out of my favorite oatbran(toasted Trader Joe’s) so this was straight up steel cut. Normally, I’m not a fan because of the coarseness, but the pumpkin softened that. Grey’s Anatomy was… interesting? last night. I liked that they switch up the format of the show to make it different; but I don’t know that that way really worked. I’ll be watching The Office and 30 Rock over the weekend at some point to make up. I also might have snuck one of these into bed with me:

Cinnamon Raisin Roll With Creamy Vanilla Frosting And Vanilla Sugar

Cinnamon Raisin Roll With Creamy Vanilla Frosting And Vanilla Sugar

Holy Hannah was that good; now I understand why I consider these an “essential”. For the frosting I did 1 tablespoon cream cheese, 1 tablespoon plain 2% Voskos, and a little NuNaturals vanilla stevia. I wasn’t sure if cream cheese and yogurt together would work, but that was a big fat yes. It was smooth and creamy and held it’s¬†consistency¬†but was still soft; could you ask for something more?

One of the things I think is best for tests is sleep so I went to bed a little earlier than normal and got a real good nights sleep. My right foot did not feel up to par this morning, but I wanted to run anyway. Why am I so stubborn? I think it’s a familial trait. I waddled through 10 miles in 85:14. All that time gave me time to think and realize the reason I was sore was because I completely forgot to stretch anything yesterday–lesson learnt. I had a muffin planned for breakfast, but banana on the brains caused me to come up with this:

Banana Oats With Banana Peanut Butter And Smart Balance Peanut Butter, Strawberry Coconut Milk Kefir

Banana Oats With Banana Peanut Butter And Smart Balance Peanut Butter, Strawberry Coconut Milk Kefir

I love how creamy properly mushed banana makes oatmeal; it’s a great substitution for when pumpkin isn’t the right flavor. And the banana peanut butter is definitely growing on me, in case you can’t tell. That was just one big banana nut mess! But do¬†you notice anything missing from my breakfast this morning? Whole Grains? No. Probiotics? Nope. Nut Butter? Big nope. Animal products–yes! I’ve decided that, in honor of Lightlife and Tempehtations, I’m going to take it upon myself to eat vegan for today. I actually had this planned for Wednesday but that all changed when I got invited to the dinner(there was no vegan dishes there so it would have been a huge fail). I’m very excited to try this out; it’s not something I’ll pick up¬†permanently¬†but I feel like it will be a fun adventure–wish me luck!

P.S. Nature’s path giveaway! They have great vegan and gluten free cereals and granolas so be sure to enter this one.

How The Time Flies

Posted on October 21, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

As it turns out, when you’re really behind, an 80 minute class being cancelled isn’t as much a savior as you’d think. Like I mentioned, I crawled back into bed yesterday morning and did plenty I’d been neglecting around the room

  • Watch Amazing Race
  • Read blogs
  • Dust coffee grinds and salt off desk
  • Take out the trash
  • Clean plates and silverware

It felt like so much more at the time; how depressing. I got word(aka, I used the internet) of a special dish in one of the dining halls across campus, so I walked over and it was better than I could have hoped for:

Pumpkin Apple Soup With Flax, Toast With Mighty Maple, Fakin' Bacon

Pumpkin Apple Soup With Flax, Toast With Mighty Maple, Fakin' Bacon

The menu said there’d be squash apple soup. Well they ran out of squash so instead it was pumpkin! I added a bit of flax from my fridge and the tempeh bacon and peanut butter of course. Let’s ignore the fact that this is essentially my breakfast everyday and just focus on how the maple/salty/pumpkin all went together so well. I really hope that wasn’t an oil heavy soup because I ate a lot of it. While I was out I also picked up some mail and got something really exciting:

Lightlife Mail

Lightlife Mail

After discovering their new line of Tempehtation products, I got in touch with Lightlife. You know me; I’m by no means a vegan(more on that later), but I love trying out new cuisines and was so impressed by what they offered. They sent me coupons to pick out and review some of their products. Naturally I was overjoyed and went out on a special Whole Foods trip right after Days and Rachael Ray.

It was incredible in New England yesterday; the weather actually warmed up and the clouds cleared. I walked and read some Ancient Greek odes to Demeter and Aphrodite(because doesn’t everyone do this on their way to Whole Foods?) and was there before I knew it. I must have been fast in the store, because the whole trip(1.15 miles there and then back) took only 80 minutes. On the way back I had a snack:

Clif Chocolate Peanut Mojo Dipped

Clif Chocolate Peanut Mojo Dipped

This was another one of the flavors Clif sent my way that I could not say no to; the name itself had so much promise. Well, it was decent, and the salty/sweet was most definitely there. But it definitely didn’t win me over. My full review of it is here. I’m hoping after this one the rest will exceed my expectations like the PB&J flavor did. When I got back to my dorm, this is what I had to show for the adventure:

Grocery Loot

Grocery Loot

Did you know there’s now a 365 brand of pumpkin that’s cheaper than Libby’s? I’m giving it a chance even though I swear by my dealer, Libby, in hopes that it’s good. I went with the Ginger Teryaki Tempehtation dinner for my first tasting because it sounded amazing. I also picked up some soy yogurt for reasons that will become clear tomorrow and some teryaki salmon from the salad bar for dinner(only 1.86 for a salmon meal! score!). I worked a bit more until 5, at which point I realized I was hunnnnngrry. I would have made oats but my roommate was napping and those can get extensive and loud with me. Instead I tried a different in a jar:

Yogurt In A Jam Jar, Vitabrownie

Yogurt In A Jam Jar, Vitabrownie

If you can do oats in a nut butter jar, you can definitely do yogurt in a jam jar. My favorite banana pineapple rum jam was on its last leg, so I helped it along by adding 8oz Stonyfield plain yogurt. Yum! I think there was more in the jar than I realized there was, but that only made it that much better. It tasted just like a pineapple Chobani because the yogurt had a little fat in it. The brownie I threw in for a bit of fiber. It definitely held me over until I planned on meeting up with people(and an unpictured coffee from Blue State definitely didn’t hurt). I already had my main protein picked out(the salmon) but some veggies were definitely lacking from my day:

Teryaki Salmon, Roasted Cauliflower With Lemon Tahini, Baked Sweet Potato

Teryaki Salmon, Roasted Cauliflower With Lemon Tahini, Baked Sweet Potato

Let me tell you one thing: that salmon was salty. Now, I didn’t even do much to it, so if I’m saying that you know it must have been heavily doused. Don’t get me wrong; it was still damn good. But even so it could have used a tad less. I grabbed a tiny whole sweet potato instead of a 1/2 a big one; I love the skin part and this maximized the amount I got(not to mention the inside wasn’t burnt). The cauliflower and tahini combo I was not a fan of. It tasted very heavy and almost like parmesan even though I’m¬†positive¬†there wasn’t any cheese in that dish. Is this how tahini should be? It didn’t impress me, though I suppose if I were a vegan and ever missed the taste of cheese I could turn to tahini.

Maybe it was a denser meal than I realized, because hunger didn’t come until deep into The Biggest Loser. The blue team made a smart call by sending the black team home even if it was a tough one to make. Normally seeing other people lose weight makes me want food; I guess I was too deep into¬†Herodotus¬†to notice them. School was definitely getting me a bit stressed. What’s good eats when you got stress? CHOCOLATE:

Dark Chocolate Attune

Dark Chocolate Attune

Oh, and having that chocolate be probiotic definitely doesn’t hurt. This was another Attune product I reviewed here and oh my God was this good! It was just like any other premium dark chocolate bar, but had 30% my DV of calcium and 3g of fiber and 6.1 million little critters in it that’s going to keep me running regular before I go running. Amazing. At 10:30 I had a major dilemma. I’d like to be lying in bed in the dark at that time, but I really wanted oatmeal. Like my breakfast, oatmeal won out.

Oatmeal With Chocolate Chips And Smart Balance

Oatmeal With Chocolate Chips And Smart Balance

I took a pretty before picture, but I decided to retake it to show how I actually eat my oats in all its salty, messy glory. I downed this in 20 minutes and still managed to sleep by a reasonable time.

When I woke up, I decided I wanted to do 10 on the treadmill this morning; it completely didn’t occur to me how nice it was outside until I ran the first 3 or so, during which time I was snacking on this:

Chocolate Brownie Z-Bar

Chocolate Brownie Z-Bar

Flash is not my friend but it’s dark at 7am. The gym was virtually empty; I think there were 6 other people throughout my entire time there, 1 of which being my “gym-friend”. She said “have a good day” and I said “take care”. I’m a stud muffin. I ran 10 miles in 83:11 and my feet were really feeling it towards the end but I’m glad I stuck it out. Speaking of muffins, this was a berry good breakfast:

Blueberry Raspberry Oat Bran Muffin With Almond Butter, Strawberry Coconut Milk Kefir

Blueberry Raspberry Oat Bran Muffin With Almond Butter, Strawberry Coconut Milk Kefir

I hope you’re picking up all these puns I’m putting down. I loved the berry/almond/vanilla combo of it all. This kefir is seriously good stuff. I don’t even know how jazzed I am to try other brands than this one, because it’s so perfectly thick and sweet without overdoing it. FYI, don’t be surprised at all if you see the exact same breakfast tomorrow.

I had a very “fun” surprise in store for today which I think we all would have gotten a kick out of. Amazingly, however, I won a contest to attend an amazing sounding dinner in Boston which I am much much more excited about. I don’t know exactly how getting there and all is going to work out just yet, but it’d take a lot to keep me from good food like this. Instead, I’ll save the other thing for tomorrow and take plenty of pictures tonight for you all.

Stick To The List

Posted on October 14, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Good morning. First off, I was very excited when Krystal from The Special K Treatment asked me to do a guest post a little while ago and now it’s up! Be sure to check out her fun and funky blog.

Yesterday morning my shorter run and hungry, hungry, hippo breakfast had me done awfully early. Usually I’m rushing out the door at 10:52 to get to class, but I had plenty of time. So much time I managed to squeeze a trip to the library(yuck) and grab a cup of coffee(yum) and still made it in before the teacher. After class I was excited because it’s that special time when the Farmers’ Market magically appears on my front lawn. I went straight to the creamery station and they had it!

Kefir From Narragansett Creamery

Kefir From Narragansett Creamery

How exciting. I was a bit disappointed when they forgot it last week. Unfortunately, they didn’t have fun and funky flavors like maple raspberry, but I took a leap of faith at guessing their plain was just as good. At $2 a bottle, it’s a bit of a splurge, but how often do you find homemade kefir? For some reason, I was not hungry during my usual lunch hour, so I just packed my lunch in all to-go containers:

Kale And Linguica Soup, Carrots And Broccoli In Mustard, Pineapple Chobani With Pumpkin Flax Granola

Kale And Linguica Soup, Carrots And Broccoli In Mustard, Pineapple Chobani With Pumpkin Flax Granola

This seemed like a smart idea. But by the time I got to history, I felt weird with 3 containers and a binder on my desk, so I wolfed down the veggies and soup and my bottle of water. After realizing I had sufficiently bloated myself with more water than I need in a day, I had to stop and recompose(I’m not really kidding here; I didn’t have another sip of water until 6:30 with dinner!). Thankfully, that meant I wasn’t hungry at all for my yogurt and I could sit back and enjoy it. The Pumpkin Flax Granola was sitting in there for 2 hours by the time I ate it and it still had crunch–now that’s one hell of a granola. At the end of my Epic Poetry class, I made a list and headed straight to Whole Foods since my dorm was the opposite direction.

Shopping List

Shopping List

Half of the list has question marks, meaning I wanted them but knew I shouldn’t buy them, and the bottom says “You have a lot of food. Only buy what’s necessary/you need to eat the other food. No granola or bars.” I leave myself the best messages; but if I didn’t “remind” myself of that, I’d totally go nuts in the store. On the way I had to make a pit stop at Staples to send out a fax, and headed to F.Y.E. here they didn’t have the particular video game I wanted. Shame because it’s suppose to rain for 3 days and I don’t see myself leaving the dorm much. When I was in Whole Foods, I did a pretty good job of sticking to the list. The sales this week weren’t as appealing as usual, anyway. Although they did have those amazing cinnamon rolls by Zen Bakery that I didn’t stand near for long. I got back to my dorm at 4:20 with these:

Cream Cheese And Attune Bars

Cream Cheese And Attune Bars

I picked up some Attune bars with the coupons I was sent to review them, and 2 tubs of cream cheese. As you must realize, I go through cream cheese a lot ūüôā But wait, they are regularly 2.69 each, on sale for 2/$4, and there’s a coupon in the new Whole Deal for $1 off 2 Organic Valley products. All in all, I got both for $3 total, which made them cheaper than the non-organic store brand! My mom raised me well in that respect ūüôā

Pumpkin Oats With Grain Sweetened Dark Chocolate Chips And SB PB

Pumpkin Oats With Grain Sweetened Dark Chocolate Chips And SB PB

I didn’t want something sweet, so this bowl was pretty perfect as an afternoon snack. The dark chocolate chips have a much more mellow flavor and the salt really gives your taste buds a kick. The fire alarm went off, but I didn’t budge at all. Is it just me, or do school fire alarm tests in Elementary School completely desensitize you to fire alarms later in life? Plus, Taylor Swift was on Oprah and she’s kind of my celebrity crush. I got plenty of work done. Oh wait, that’s a lie. That’s what I meant to do. Curse you, internet(jk, I love you and don’t ever leave me). Well I may not have gotten work done but I did get dinner.

Baked Sweet Potato, Garden Style Scrod, Veggetable Medley

Baked Sweet Potato, Garden Style Scrod, Vegetable Medley

Yikes. Sorry for the photo quality. In The Ratty I try to have my camera out as little as possible so as not to¬†embarrass¬†the non-foodies I eat with; those crazy people need to learn to love their food more ūüôā I was so happy to see fish on tonights menu(yes, that’s what’s under the tomato stuff). I scraped off the toping and whatever was underneath to just get a taste of the salty, salty scrod. I had to go into the vegetarian line to find the sweet potatoes, because apparently people in the meat line aren’t the same who want potatoes. And there was a vegetable medley I just couldn’t, but probably should’ve, said no to. How is it that some of those veggies come out cooked the right amount and the ones right next to it are mushy as a rotten banana? What a mystery. After my friend went to some lecture to not write his essay *tsk* *tsk* I went back to my dorm to write mine like a good student… and instead watched TV shows online. The internet is a slippery slope. For dessert course 1 I tried my new probiotic friend:

Attune Milk Chocolate Crisp

Attune Milk Chocolate Crisp

With coffee, of course, because that’s how chocolate is best. This was my first tasting of the Attune line, a Chocolate Crisp bar. Umm, yum! This has probiotics, fiber, and calcium? You had me at chocolate. I really liked this for its smooth flavor and you can see my full review by clicking on that link. Like I said, getting all my Product Reviews into that format is going to take a little bit of time. But I hope to get it done within a month because of how clean and¬†efficient¬†it is for myself and you all. That chocolate definitely got me into a mocha mood:

Cinnamon Raisin Toast With Mocha Peanut Butter, Milk Mocha Chocolate

Cinnamon Raisin Toast With Mocha Peanut Butter, Milk Mocha Chocolate

After this I have 4 slices of toast left. Is this really my dorm? What happened to when I had about 3 loaves? Also, it’s very tricky to stop at 1 of those Newman’s Own Organic chocolates. My best advice is break off a piece, toss the rest out your window, and run to a bomb shelter to avoid scarfing it all down, because it’s that crazy good. While I was translating, there was either a) a pep rally or b) a drunken frat party occurring outside. Really, they sound the same when you get right down to it. My roommate came back around this time and started “doing work” which really annoyed me. After finishing some work and ignoring the noise I think I made the best dessert ever:

Vegan Cinnamon Raisin Roll With Vanilla Bean Cream Cheese Frosting

Vegan Cinnamon Raisin Roll With Vanilla Bean Cream Cheese Frosting

My fellow Peanut Butter lover, Jenny, is having dessert as her “Best Of…” theme this week. How awesome is that? I needed to get in on the action. I took a Zen Bakery cinnamon roll and topped it with low fat cream cheese mixed with vanilla stevia, and topped with vanilla bean sugar. This was like The Odyssey: Epic(that’s funny if you’re me and going cuckoo reading that book ;-)). On a sadder note, my bready carb stash is diminishing rapidly. I’m going to need to get some reserves flown in and fast to survive the rest of the week.

I talked yesterday about the importance of shutting down your computer and lights a while before going to bed. Last night could not have been a better example; I had my computer off 45 minutes before I planned on sleeping, and my lights 35, and falling asleep couldn’t have been easier. Unfortunately, I had some weird dreams about secret agents and a killing maid and… well let’s just not go there. All in all it was much better than usual and I was ready to run when I woke up. It clearly was, like usual, a treadmill morning; it’s about mid 40’s here for the next half of the week! Ugh, let’s not think about that. I decided 8 miles at a challenging pace was a good workout and ended up doing it in 63:57. When I got back to my room I was a little dissapointed to find that I didn’t have the ingredients or time for the breakfast I thought about in my mind running, so I had to work on the fly:

2% Greek Yogurt With Cocoa Beach Granola And Caramel Sauce, Vanilla Chip Bar With Vanilla Peanut Butter

2% Greek Yogurt With Cocoa Beach Granola And Caramel Sauce, Vanilla Chip Bar With Vanilla Peanut Butter

Before you think I’ve gone completely berserk, there wasn’t actually any cream cheese in that container; I merely needed something portable to put the yogurt in. I love the Trader Joe’s 2% because it’s a little bit richer and holds up well. The caramel with chocolate granola was heavenly–definitely a dessert tip to keep in mind. And you know I’m running low on bread when I use a granola bar to put peanut butter on. I might have to break down and purchase some english muffins later so that doesn’t happen again. In fact, today I’m expecting my shipment of Naturally Nutty seed butters, so I definitely need something for some good spreading! Is it wrong to be so excited about getting butter in the mail? If so, I don’t want to be right.

Xagave anyone? Oh the things I could bake with that…

Build Me Up Butternut

Posted on October 7, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

As you can tell, there are a few new changes to the blog. Yesterday was all about building up, up, and away. I can’t believe Food Makes Fun Fuel has come this far from a Summer distraction, and I can’t wait to see where it will go next. After sending in an application last week, yesterday I became a Featured Foodbuzz Blogger. I’m super excited as you might be able to tell to take on that role and whatever might come of it. I’ve had to adjust the layout a bit. Any ideas for what you think the header should be? I stuck with some Fall themed PB & Oats, since I think that’s pretty descriptive of everything right now. That being said, don’t be surprised if I’m procrastinating on a paper some day soon and switch it up. I also have big plans over the next month(yes–we’re talking month because I do have homework and an attempt at a life) to reorganize the Product Reviews for them to be much more readable like the Recipes page. Lastly, I wrote up a quick blurb called How I Fuel for new readers to get a sense of my food philosophy, so check that out.

And thanks for all the well-wishes on my exam. I think it went pretty well; it’s kind of hard to tell with language courses because you either know the vocab and constructions or you take a guess at the vocab and constructions. That being said, I think I finished feeling about par for the class so I feel strong and know I did what I could. Afterwards I stopped by somewhere I might not have otherwise expected myself:

Rockefeller Library

Rockefeller Library

We have a pretty decent library, but it’s very… libraryish? I’m not a fan of anywhere where a cough is a spectacle and books are the main source of entertainment. Funny because my grandmother was a town librarian for 40 years. Yikes. I printed what I needed and dashed. I swung by the dining hall and grabbed a lunch that really buttered me up:

Vegan Butternut Squash Soup, Maple Mustard Tofu, Broccoli, Italian Veggies, Mushrooms

Vegan Butternut Squash Soup, Maple Mustard Tofu, Broccoli, Italian Veggies, Mushrooms

Get the joke? Oh, I’m punny ūüôā This soup was actually AMAZING. Better yet, I looked up the nutrition/ingredient details because I can and it was equally spectacular. This was pretty much straight, seasoned squash puree with a little EVOO. I try to stick to “vegan” things in the dining hall because anything else risks a heavy case of butteritis(and not butternut). I added a little cinnamon and salt and that took me off to heaven. The rest was decent, too. No protein really stood out to me so I went with the maple/mustard combo of last week and that was perfect.

I hope you’re sitting down reading this: I didn’t go to a grocery store yesterday afternoon. Fever? Nope. Swine Flu? Nope. I just really had nothing I needed other than to get work done, so I stayed put on campus. It’s not entertaining, but c’est la vie. This was more what my afternoon looked like:

Study Area And Chocolate Brownie Z-Bar

Study Area And Chocolate Brownie Z-Bar

Plus daytime TV, of course. How could I miss that ūüėČ I try not to do the processed food thing when in my dorm room but I needed something I could nibble slowly on to work and my palate said chocolate brownie Z-bar or straight baking chips; I think I chose the better route. I’m not going to claim to have done anything spectacular other than translate pages and pages from dead authors who have been translated time and time again, but if that doesn’t get your goat I don’t know what will. Oh, maybe this:

Banana Goodness Bread With Smart Balance Peanut Butter In Low-Fat Plain Yogurt

Banana Goodness Bread With Smart Balance Peanut Butter In Low-Fat Plain Yogurt

When Baked Goods Met Freezer should be the sequel to When Harry Met Sally, because it’s a hit. I dethawed some of my Banana Goodness Bread and topped it with Smart Balance peanut butter(which I’ve been oddly obsessed with lately) and threw in some plain low-fat yogurt for a controlled yogurt mess. I think low-fat plain yogurt has the perfect flavor, with just a touch of cream, to the point where it doesn’t need any sweetening whatsoever. Speaking of X Met Y, I might have caught up with How I Met Your Mother at this time and that might have been the best episode of the season thus far in my opinion; anything Barney + Robin I’ll be a sucker for. I met Adam whom I ditched last night for dinner:

Vegan Butternut Squash Soup, Carrots, Green Beans, Black Bean And Spinach Ragout

Vegan Butternut Squash Soup, Carrots, Green Beans, Black Bean And Spinach Ragout

Why do you fill me up, butternut baby? Again, delicious. I even brought cinnamon to the dining hall to add to it(is that weird? Don’t answer that, I’ll take a wild guess). The veggies were all their veggie self. The bean and spinach thing wasn’t bad, but it definitely didn’t prompt me to finish all of it. I was happy ending the meal on the note of my soup and Grease playing in my mind.

Tuesday nights NBC has stolen me. With The Biggest Loser and Jay Leno, how could I not just park myself on that station? I loved the theme of this week; how Americans have so much trouble eating out I don’t know but they do and that needed to be addressed. I’ve always felt a little “special” when i get nit-picky about my food when we eat out, but it’s entirely worth it to have a healthy and delicious meal made the way you want it(so long as the waiter doesn’t get p-ssed and spit in your food). Midway through I got an intense craving and had to leave my dorm for this:

Don’t I take a great photo ūüėČ But in all seriousness, in getting this yogurt,¬†I was robbed. Not on the walk over, or even the walk back, but in the cafeteria, at the checkout, when I realized it was 2.85. Wtf? Is it made with gold now or something? I’ve always believed in feeding your cravings but not if they’re going to drive you to the poor house. I’m going to need to bolster up on some Oikos soon at Whole Foods to avoid that situation. But I do love that hint o’ cream in the base, and that this flavor has less sugar than other Chobani fruit flavors, so I guess it’s OK in the end. Have I not mentioned my obsession lately?

Smart Balance And Semi-Sweet Baking Chip Oats

Smart Balance And Semi-Sweet Baking Chip Oats

Dear Smart Balance, please make a chocolate flavor and spare me the extra effort. Your stalker, Evan. If this were a flavored nut butter I might understand the cravings; last I checked, flax oil wasn’t a “flavor”, but that might have just changed. And in case anyone’s ever wondered, the side-effects from too many Omega-3’s in the diet are an elevated mood,¬†diarrhea, and thinned blood. I looked that up one day over the Summer when my intake of salmon, Smart Balance, and flax was a little more than gratuitous. I also had some toast with cream cheese and peanut butter cookie spread because I really wanted to fuel for the AM run.

When I woke up it was pouring. And I’m talking “Get out the ark” pouring. But I took it in stride and went to the gym. I wanted to run 10 miles this morning. But I knew if I used that word “want” that left doubt, so instead I told myself I was running 10 miles. I put on the ipod video and got going, although the real drama was the lightening and monsoon occurring outside. Mile 4 was the longest by far, and continually peeking at the distance didn’t help. I got through it nonetheless and finished strong in 82:46. Obviously, I was ecstatic because that’s only the 5th time I’ve run that distance and I felt really strong afterwards. I got back to my dorm a little later than usual but dent ahead with my planned bowl of oats:

Oatmeal With Fluff, Vanilla Almond Butter, And Strawberry Jam, Strawberry Chobani

Oatmeal With Fluff, Vanilla Almond Butter, And Strawberry Jam, Strawberry Chobani

Strawberry, vanilla, and almond could not possibly go better together; this bowl makes me miss Summer so much as I look out on the damp streets right now. This Chobani was not 2.85, thankfully. It’s from the ones I won off of Heather’s contest. It’s a little thin, and a lot of sugar, but it’s got some good flavor. I really wish they used the 2% base more because I think that really makes the yogurt.

Today I have no clue what to do. I suppose it’s dependant on the weather, like always in New England in Fall. I have 7 strong essay pages, so I’m not stressing that one too much yet until I realize I have nothing to make it longer with(TWSS?). Anyway, toodle loo!

Soybeans Make Meals

Firstly, I’m glad I have tough readers who don’t let a little mold scare them off from their favorite food. As a testament to the kind of company Oikos is, Kristina, the representative who first introduced me, came across that part of the post and offered to send replacement coupons. Thank you, Oikos; Clearly I’m just not eating my tubs of yogurt fast enough, but that’s fixable. My breakfast yesterday must have filled me up with protein because I was not hungry at all by the end of Greek. Looking back, between the oatmeal, egg, greek yogurt, and peanut flour, there was about 40 grams in all–and much tastier than just eating a piece of grilled chicken, too! I muddled around my room a bit, went to the Ratty, and got the PERFECT inspiration for lunch:

Lentil Soup, Broccoli, Maple Mustard Tofu

Lentil Soup, Broccoli, Mustard Maple Tofu

Mustard Maple Tofu

Mustard Maple Tofu

I know I’m not the only blogger who has drooled whenever Kath makes her tofu; I thought hers always sounded really interesting, so I worked with what I could. I tooke 3oz chopped tofu from the salad bar, tossed with 2 teaspoons mustard and maple syrup, and microwaved for 40 seconds. She was definitely right about the flavors here because they’re AMAZING. It’s not quite sweet like maple, and not quite savory like mustard, yet it’s very earthy and subtle. The lentil soup completely failed in comparison to the tofu. Is anyone else always surprised when they find lentil soup? I know how much water it takes to make regular lentils so I can never imagine how much water is needed for lentils AND soup.

I was originally going to go to Whole Foods after Days with my friend, Adam, but he said he didn’t want to go today since he just went grocery shopping yesterday. What, normal people don’t go grocery shopping every single day and don’t find browsing the aisles fun? What’s up with that? I went by my lonesome, but I¬†think¬†that’s a good thing because I took so long he would have gotten really frustrated. I had this in my pocket to snack on:

Spooky Smores Z-Bar

Spooky Smores Z-Bar

So loving these right now. And why not, ’tis the season. They have a bit more saturated fat than my other faves, the chocolate brownie and the peanut butter, but they also have more whole grains. And I swear, if you have any intention of eating a Z-bar during the day, keep it in your pocket beforehand. Some people swear by microwaving these, but I think the pocket is a much better method because it heats from the outside, more like an oven. After a few hours it’s really soft and slightly melted–unbelievable. So what did I end up getting at Whole Foods?

Whole Foods Organic Lowfat Yogurt

Whole Foods Organic Lowfat Yogurt

Just my yogurt. I browsed the kefirs to see if there was any I wanted to try, but I wasn’t sure what brand to go for, what flavor, etc., so I let that one be for now. Besides, after this I have 2.25 left in my food allowance for September and with today being the last day I really want to try to start October out on the positive. And I like the Organic Lowfat variety; in my opinion, lowfat gives the best combination of nutrition and texture out there, and Whole Foods doesn’t make a non-organic version of it. When I got back to my room, I downloaded the new google chrome, which has made uploading pics so much less of a pain, and made a snack:

Oats With Vanilla Peanut Butter And Grain Sweetened Dark Chocolate Chips

Oats With Vanilla Peanut Butter And Grain Sweetened Dark Chocolate Chips

This is another Naturally Nutty flavor that puzzles me but I really like. I’m convinced if you try it unknowing, you can’t tell that it’s not regular peanut butter, yet you’ll like it a lot more than plain. The vanilla adds a subtle something that does a good job at just enhancing the nuttiness. And dark chocolate chips… speak for themselves. I ate this while catching up on Heroes. Now that the episodes aren’t 2 freakin’ hours long, I can get a lot more into them and appreciate the plot; it looks like this will be one hell of a season. For dinner, I met up with my friend at the V-W since the online menu looked more appealing:

Curry Tempeh, Broccoli, Green Beans, Carrots, Beans And Bacon Soup

Curry Tempeh, Broccoli, Green Beans, Carrots, Beans And Bacon Soup

Enter soybean source number two of the day. I’ve only recently tried tempeh since eating at the dining halls and I’ve really enjoyed it thus far. It’s much meatier than any other meat-alternatives I’ve had and I’d love to try some of the great blog recipes I’ve seen if I ever get back into a kitchen. The curry added a nice mild spice to this. The bacon soup was a bit to soothe my bacon tooth I had last week that went untouched; it didn’t really do much more than give me plenty of gas. Bacon in soup is just sad and flabby, whereas bacon should be salty and crisp(and, some people might argue, in dark chocolate bars I eye every time I’m at Whole Foods). The soy definitely won out in this meal.

NBC officially has me on Tuesday’s. First up was 2 hours of the Biggest Loser. Is it just me, or is this the nastiest, meanest, most depressing season yet? Isn’t it great in a horrible way? I think Bob and Jillian must be tired with the show or have HUGE egos because they have gotten pissy–love it. The last scene before they went into the elimination room was so emotional, it was almost hard to watch. Of course, there was snacks throughout:

Coffee, Gingerlicious Cookies, 10-Grain Bread With Peanut Butter Cookie Spread

Peanut Butter Scone With Smart Balance Peanut Butter

Peanut Butter Scone With Smart Balance Peanut Butter

Plenty of good eats for the night. See my mug? Oh yeah, I’m a devoted fan(/it was dirt cheap at the NBC store in¬†Rockefeller¬†center since no one else wants them). Where to start, where to start. Holly’s post last night had me drooling at her amazing pumpkin molasses cookies. I’m definitely adding those to the to-bake list, but for the meanwhile it reminded me I had some frozen gingerlicious cookies to devour. I’m sure they aren’t as good as Holly’s but at 50 calories each with fiber and a veggie puree base, they aren’t shabby at all. I finished off a tub of cream cheese in making my peanut butter cookie spread toast; I was thinking of oats in a container at first but somehow I don’t think the plastic and hot oats would be friends. And the scone was made with a recipe from The Peanut Butter Boy. That’s definitely one of the favorite recipes amongst the members of my house. I made mine with flax and almond milk so they’re vegan. Note to self: flaxy scones + flaxy peanut butter might be a bit too much fiber for the stomach right before bed. I wound down the night with Jay Leno’s new show. I really like it and hope it’s here to stay because it’s a reliable source of entertainment. I’d rather be watching Flipping Out at that time but we don’t get Bravo here so no dice.

This morning was another “why do I get up early to run morning”, but run I did nevertheless. I didn’t even look at milage/time on the treadmill because I think it takes so much longer if you obsess about those numbers. Instead I just kept my eyes focused on The Today Show and the drama that is Jon And Kate Plus 8(Sorry, but I can not stand this show or all the press around it). I ended up going 8 miles in 68:30 minutes; I think the older woman who’s there every morning like me thinks I’m a bit crazy for running even after the treadmill shuts itself down; then again, I can’t disagree with her. I think my breakfast speaks for itself today:

Fluffernutter Oatmeal, Banana Goodness Bread, Banana Nut Vitatop

Fluffernutter Oatmeal, Banana Goodness Bread, Banana Nut Vitatop

Normally, I try to vary up the plate with dairy, fruits, carbs, and healthy fats, and normally I’m pretty good at that, no? I mean, what doesn’t say balance better than a bowl with oats, egg, and steak sauce. This morning balance just did not appeal to me, and I wanted bready carbs. I almost got the toaster out to add a slice of 10-grain bread, but showed restriction after the oats. The banana nut vitatop was clearly one of the winners from the sampler I recieved; though I must say it has serious competition with my Banana Goodness Bread with dark chocolate chips. And fluffernutter oats, ah fluffernutter oats, nothing else is so universally satisfying. See, there’s fruit on the plate in the banana jam. That counts, right? I used Butter Toffee Peanut Butter by Naturally Nutty for this batch because I think the flavor just works well with banana(and who doesn’t love B-alliteration?).

I’ve been in such a rush this morning, I haven’t even looked at what the new sales are at Whole Foods. Can you imagine that? Please excuse me while I fix that. But I want to leave you with this hilarious quote I came across yesterday, that is just too true for words:

“My doctor told me to stop having intimate dinners for four; unless there are three other people.” – Orson Welles
