Greek Yogurt With Cherry Butter And Dark Cherry Chocolate

Like Sugarland preaches, in life there ain’t no rhyme or reason, no complicated meaning, ain’t no need to overthink it, let go laughin’. Sometimes you just need to put unholy amounts of cherry butter and chocolate on top of your yogurt to make life a lil’ better 🙂 Ain’t no shame. I enjoyed this gourmet yogurt mess while watching Survivor; at this point, I’m just waiting while they knock out the suckers in the game and get to the real players.

Did you know it’s apparently legal to have “free time”? I did not. But I finally got around to reading the new Food Network magazine I got ages ago. Most of the recipes seem so complex I want to tear my hair out, but the articles are nice, and there was this killer recipe for avocado hummus snuck in a St. Patrick’s day article. Not so holy? Me singing out loud both parts of Lady Antebellum’s All We’d Ever Need. It got noisy.

Pumpkin Oatmeal With SP PB, Nutritional Yeast, And Sea Salt

I wrapped up the night with the same bowl of oatmeal I had at breakfast–no shame. If there was any confusion, what I put on this is Smart Balance Peanut Butter, their one sweetened with agave syrup. They have several products out that sound similar, but that’s the one I like. I also thought about how I ate completely vegan yesterday, save 4oz grass fed beef and 6oz greek yogurt. Not bad considering when you see a deer, you see Bambi. And I see antlers up on the wall. Brad and I have things in common.

Tribal Cinnamon Oatmeal Bora Bora Bar

This morning, I accidentally set my alarm for Tuesday/Thursday time. 6:15 on a day with no class? No thank you. I “slept in” until 7, then hit the gym with this bar in hand. I really didn’t have a set distance. 8? 10? 12?!

Yep. 12. I haven’t ran that far or felt that good since back in December. Was it the dried fruit in the bar? Was it the company of the other treadmillers? Was it The Today Show? Was it the copious amount of country music? No idea. But, like Miley says, Ain’t about how fast I get there. Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side. It’s the climb.

Found Money

On the walk back to my dorm alone I found 27 cents! Sweet deal; that’s about as much of a paycheck as I’ve seen lately. Since I’m a poor Country singer, hopping bar to bar for a paycheck, I thought about how much beer food this pays for. I was pleasantly surprised to realize this matched the cost of 3 bowls of organic oatmeal. It’s like getting paid to eat…

Oatmeal With Vanilla Cinnamon Almond Butter And Coconut Milk

Keeping with the organicness of it all, I topped my oats with Naturally Nutty‘s not-yet released organic vanilla  cinnamon almond butter and organic coconut milk. The avocado I think was from an organic batch? To be honest, I mostly get organic when it benefits me in price, or is the same either way. 1 exception to that is always organic oats from the Whole Foods bulk bin and load up when they’re on sale for 99 cents a pound. I mix that in a 50/50 blend with Trader Joe’s oat bran and it’s a perfect bowl every time. I don’t think there’s a country music song about organic foods 😦 When do you “do organic”?

Coconut milk: How do you store it/for how long? I opened this can up on Saturday night and I’m thinking it’s getting a little back-of-the-barnyard funky even covered in the fridge. It reminds me a little too much of pina colada at this point like something(though I can’t wholly complain). Also, check out this asian dinner giveaway and an iherb shopping spree. Welcome To The Weekend

Welcome to my weekend, at least! I can’t think of a more perfect way than with a new Survivor season starting in 20 minutes! I’ve been watching the show since season 1 when I was only around 8 or 9 years old. Has it really been that long? Anyway, It felt soooo good getting out of my class at 4pm this afternoon. If you’ll remember, last Thursday it was out of class and off to chocolate fest so there wasn’t much “downtime”. This afternoon, however, has been nothing but. Speaking of being lazy, I really didn’t want a “real lunch” this afternoon. All I cared about was dessert. I ended up doing something sloppy and simple.

Scrambled Eggs With Ketchup, Canned Pumpkin With Nutritional Yeast

What can I say? I’m a college student 😛 I scrambled 2 Eggland’s Best Cage Free eggs in a little pasture butter and topped with ketchup–OMG. I seriously forgot how satisfying just scrambled eggs are. My grandma would make them for me all the time; I’ll need to do them more often. On the other hand, I’ve decided pretty firmly that I just do not care for pumpkin anywhere but in my oats. It tastes bland and nasty, in my opinion. Blech. But I was also out of fresh, fiberous vegetables and was in a pickle(Mmm… pickles). More importantly, I just wanted my dessert.

Banana Whipe With Peanut Flour Topping

Banana whip! Oh how I love thee. So smooth. So creamy. So delicious. I’ve been keeping bananas from the dining hall in the dorm fridge for this; it’s free for me and takes up common space 🙂 For the topping, I meant to make a peanut sauce but didn’t use enough flour so it was more like dough. That doesn’t matter; what was important was that I realized peanut flour is something that upsets my stomach. It’s weird to think something that’s only peanut would do that to me, but it does. And it sucks that it’s a perfectly vegan source of protein 😦 I don’t even know what I’m going to do. Thoughts? Any lactose intolerant ice cream eaters out there?

Choco Peanut Butter Honest Foods Bar

During my 2nd of 2 classes this afternoon, I broke open this bar from Honest Foods. Honestly? It was pretty fantastic. I’ve come to notice that anything that’s supposed to taste like peanut butter with grains in it usually doesn’t; thankfully that wasn’t the case. I think any walnuts/sunflower seeds in here would have been better off being more peanut halves, but beyond that yum!

Chocolate Avocado Pudding With Coconut Oil

I could have been dancing getting out of my last class this afternoon; it didn’t quite matter that I didn’t do all the homework for it because we never get that far in translation courses. To celebrate the afternoon, I had some raw chocolate avocado pudding with Tropical Tradition‘s coconut oil. Welcome to the weekend indeed! If this is any indication, this weekend will be fattening 😉 After that I mostly vegged out doing some potential online shopping(aka filling a shopping cart with foodie finds but not hitting “check out”) and planning a comforting dinner.

Spinach & Feta Chicken Sausage, Roasted Brussels Sprouts And Sweet Potato With Maple Syrup

I think that pretty much sums up my comfort foods: brussels sprouts(or broccoli–either will do), sweet potatoes, maple syrup, fatty meat, salt, and anything roasted! Actually, the vegetables were a bit of a disappointment in that respect; either the fact that they were cooked in the dining hall(with no apparent fat) or my lack of patience meant they weren’t well roasted. This flavor of Al Fresco all natural chicken sausage cooked in a pan with some pasture butter made up for it a bit.

Fat Talk

Since I have a bit of time, I thought why not address some fat talk. And not the kind that we all snickered about in High School! I want to talk about fat in your(or my) diet. I was turned on to different and new fats and ways of thinking about them by bloggers like Heather and Averie. If today can be seen as an average day, then I get a good deal of mono- and poly-saturated fats from almond butter, peanut butter, and avocado, and my saturated fats from coconut, grass-fed butter, and hormone-free meats.

The obvious question would be “How do you feel?”. My answer is “Pretty darn good”. The fat is definitely delicious and filling. I haven’t had any stomach issues save the peanut flour which is actually only 12% fat. And–for what it’s worth–my skin and complexion seem smoother and clearer. If I had to sum it all up and be catch, I’d say “Fat is here to stay”. And I still think that getting the mono/polysaturated fats as well as the “bad” saturated fats. These really aren’t so bad if you stick with sources like coconut and grass-fed meat and dairy options.

Spick And Span

That’s the most ridiculous phrase, if you ask me. Does anyone actually know what it means? I feel like I could do some funky research with my linguistics background but–meh–it’s a holiday and I’d rather be lazy 🙂 Anyway, that’s what we’re doing right now: Making everything “spick and span” for our guests soon to arrive. That’s as opposed to last night when I was throwing pillows everywhere, emptying salt containers on the counter, and rustling the leaves from out Christmas tree just for fun. JK! But I was in a mood to try something new.

Dark Chocolate Q.Bel Wafer Rolls In Raspberry Chobani

Correction: I tried 2 new things. To get some more probiotics in my day, I gave the raspberry Chobani a try. Yum! I am soooo excited for this flavor to hit shelves. I would grab the pomegranate one soley because it reminded me of raspberry. However, I’m majorly depressed sugar beats out raspberry on the ingredient list 😦 That’s not the case on any other Chobani fruit flavors, so I can’t help but wonder why here?

The other thing I tried was Q.bel‘s dark chocolate wafer roll. Again, yum! But then again, what dark chocolate isn’t? I liked how this was more sweet than bitter, but only because of the wafer part. In my mind, I was hoping for more of a hard chocolate coating but a soft, flowing syrupy center(I can dream, can’t I?). That wasn’t really the case, but it was still good. After that I was exhausted and wanted to go to bed early. My mind, however, had other plans.

Vegan Whole Wheat Cinnamon Roll With Smart Balance Peanut Butter

I really think they’re lying on the ingredients or the nutritional info here because these are simply too good. Is cinnamon roll envy a viable reason to spark an investigation against a company? I think so, and I’m not above that. To make it more “night time appropriate”, I slathered on some healthy nut butter and picked out all the raisins.

Definitely didn’t need that sugar before going to bed. I’m actually not a big raisin fan at all(hence leaving them out of my cinnamon roll recipe). That is unless we’re talking about Rum Raisin Gelato, in which case all bets are off 🙂 I thought I was waking up earlier this morning after listening to a few songs on the radio and shutting my alarm off but as it turned out I woke up at 7:40, again. Oh well, I’ll save that change for the new year. Eventually I got around to drinking more coffee than I’d care to mention and making a breakfast.

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Pumpkin Cream Cheese And Walnut Butter, Fat Free Greek Yogurt With Banana Pineapple Rum Jam

My last breakfast of 2009, to be exact(I really hate always thinking about that “last” thing). I didn’t have any pumpkin yesterday so clearly that erupted into my bowl of oatmeal. I love the pumpkin cream cheese/walnut butter combo because the cream cheese has speckles of walnuts in it. I was soooo happy to have something other than 2% yogurt after 2 weeks. Even “plain” as a flavor can get old. Fast. Afterwards I got spick and span myself in the shower and started the party plating.

My two hummuses I made yesterday. I’m predicting the Pad Thai Hummus to go over really well with this crowd. I also baked, of course.

Gluten Free Peanut Butter And Chocolate Brownies

Since one of the people coming is perhaps the biggest chocolate fan I know I decided to make gluten free chocolate mint brownies. This time, however, I made the chocolate and peanut butter by swapping out vanilla extract for mint and using 2 tablespoons chocolate chips and 3 tablespoons peanut butter chips. The peanut butter chips weren’t gluten-free certified but none of the ingredients should have gluten. And since it’s not a genuine health concern of anybody, I figured it’d be fine. I decided I was hungry for lunch at 12 and ended up spending 45 minutes making a meal. I think that’s a new record for me. Oh well, it was worth it!

Pad Thai Hummus With Green Pepper, Brussels With Steak Sauce And Tempeh Bacon

Chocolate Avocado Pudding

I caved on the hummus a little early because I’m not much of a snacker at parties and like to just eat things in meals. Now I can recommend it and have had my full 🙂 I was looking for a more smoky flavor with the brussels than the steak sauce has so I added a strip of pan-heated tempeh bacon and plenty of salt. Really, though, the pudding was entirely what I wanted; and it was sooo good! I pureed 3oz avocado with 2 tablespoons cocoa in my food processor. After that I used a fork to add 3 tablespoons coconut milk kefir, stevia, and vanilla powder. The result could not have been more perfect. All it is(besides delicious) is fat and fiber. And look how nicely the day is turning out!


I was dreaming of a white Christmas New Years and it looks like we’re getting one! I can’t bellieve it. I also can’t believe that a) my mom hasn’t been stressed out by company being here in a few hours and started yelling yet and b) that the decade is now almost over. After listening to the DJ’s on the radio reminisce and think back myself, I think this decade was best for two things: American Idol and Survivor. I hardly ever voted for American Idol these days, but who can deny that it has given us so many great artists? Besides that, Survivor is just my favorite show on television, and I imagine the same for others since it’s going into its 20th season. It totally built the world of reality television. What will you remember the decade for?

Eat For Your Brain

Chocolate Pudding With Dark Chocolate Peppermint Newman Cup

Ok, I’m not actually sure if peppermint is brain food, but it definitely doesn’t hurt? And this blogger eats a lot and seems pretty darn smart to me so it must do something. But mostly I was just eating this to get probiotic #2 of the day… tasty, delicious probiotic number 2. But was the center of the Newman cup supposed to be like a powder? It might have been a bit old.

Advent Chocolate And Omega Xocai Square

Then there was brain food via chocolate. Of course, my 20th piece of advent calender(I’ll be so sad when this goes away :-() and a new product: Xocai’s Omega Square. Each piece of chocolate has 70mg of DHA Omega-3’s(the kind we need) and is well balanced for the 2:1 Omega-6:Omega-3 ratio we as Americans should be getting. I definitely enjoyed the chocolate. If you’ve taken supplements before that have been fishy, this was nothing like those; the only “funny” tastes in it were orange peel and flaxseeds, which weren’t so much “funny” as just unexpected.

Banana Oatmeal With Maple Cashew Butter, Raw Walnuts, And Maple Syrup

I’ll admit I was upset when Russell lost on Survivor; I spent all season hating him but he played so well he deserved to win. Anyway, after getting over that, I made more brain food. I topped banana oats with Tierra Farm‘s raw organic walnuts and maple cashew butter. I thought I’d give the cashew butter another chance; it still wasn’t very mapley, though continues to impress me as a nice cashew butter. I’ve never been a fan of raw walnuts, but I gave Tierra Farm’s a try anyway; they were just as dry as I expected, but at the very least I got good brain food, right?

This morning I fully intended to try another workout but when I got up I was so sore. Yesterday’s really pushed my limit and left my legs shot. After trying something out, I decided better to push it off to the afternoon or never than overwork anything. Instead I mulled about and dreamed up a brain food breakfast.

Goji berries I think are a brainfood? They have plenty of antioxidants, at least. And my [me] & goji granola is packed with them(and dried blueberries and raspberries–yum!). Today felt like an almond butter morning so I had some of justin’s nut butter. While eating I pondered everything I have to do today and it turned out to be a lot! Whoever said vacation was for resting did not know me. I’ve made a schedule to keep myself on top of my game.

12-1: Shower and make lunch
1-2: Eat, watch Days, and more internet work
2-3:30: Bake for Christmas Eve and figure out mom birthday plans
3:30-5: Workout?
5-5:50: Internet work
5:50: Start dinner

For Christmas Eve I’m baking an intermediate(aka, this could get messy) cookie recipe. I’m hoping it goes well, though honestly a bit intimidated. Care to know more as it happens? Follow me on Twitter. Also(and this is my favorite thing about blogworld), I need some advice from you: Got any good workouts to do at home you suggest or can point me towards? Bring them on. Also, for dinner I have sirloin roast, butternut squash, brussels sprouts, broccoli, and sweet potatoes to work with. Suggestions? Edit: And whole wheat mac and cheese(from a box). And no, I don’t intend to make ALL of these, just 2 or 3.

Color My Yogurt

Apparently the mystery is solved: I ate an unripe hachiya persimmon whereas I should have eaten a fully ripened or fuyu persimmon. I think from now on instead of hear about the 25 reasons I could be dying from WebMD I’ll just ask the blogger world. Dare I go back and try another? I think this experience has scared me off for now and I will stick with the dried persimmons in my granola. Well when I said I was dragging yesterday, I was reeaaallly dragging. I reached for the only caffeine I keep around after I posted.

Well that picked me up. I straightened up a bit around here; there seem to be papers and books everywhere. What is this? A dorm during finals period?! Oh wait… haha 🙂 Dr. Phil was on Oprah; I can’t really stand him on his own show but somehow Oprah made him tolerable. I must admit I love some of his expressions: “dogpiling in the foyer” If anyone can explain that to me, they get bonus points. My hunger definitely subsided after the persimmon incident and I wasn’t feeling too snacky in the afternoon. There was one thing I didn’t mind having, though.

Plain Soy Yogurt With Peanut Sundrops

Omnomnomnom. I love this soy yogurt with milk chocolate peanut butter cups, so having it with milk chocolate coated peanuts was just as good! It was so nice and sweet and salty and delicious. But what I really loved here was how the colors ran and made the yogurt orange and yellow and purple. It may sound silly, but once and a while since going all-natural I miss the fun food colors and playing with those, and most natural food dyes cost an arm and a leg. This reminded me of how ugly cookies get when you bake them with M&M’s in them 🙂

Like I said, I wasn’t very snacky in the afternoon, so I had no problem holding off until dinner when I could try out my new purchase.

Tikka Masala Simmer Sauce

I think I’m starting to like Indian food. Or at least start to crave it, because it was on my mind all through Whole Foods. I really wanted to make a chickpea dish but the dining hall didn’t have those, so instead I got carrots and broccoli and diced half of one of my sweet potatoes and let that “simmer” in the microwave at a low power. I served that along side some lemon and lime salmon also from Whole Foods

The salmon(which was like 1.50 off the salad bar, wahoo bargains!) surprisingly did taste like lemon and lime. Sprite, anyone? With enough salt, though, it got back to its fishy roots. I liked the vegetables, but the sauce was a bit too mild? I know it says “England’s favorite mild curry sauce” but I was expecting their mild to be a bit more. Oh well, I’ll have to step it up next time!

I loved loved loved Survivor last night. it was the auction episode, which I’m always a fan of. It’s also such a good sign you’re getting towards the end of the season and can see who the real playa’s are. I had a (very repetitive) snack.

Oikos With Crushed Sunspire Peanut Milk Chocolate Drops

These mini Oikos cups are… mini, but they’re perfect for when you just want the topper and could care less about the yogurt 😉 Have I mentioned I’m now obsessed with the milk chocolate covered peanuts? I’m writing in to Trader Joe’s to request it(literally). Since there was no Grey’s, I was able to watch The Office and 30 Rock on their regular time. Neither of them had me loling, but at least I don’t have to worry about watching them online now. Then I got really random for Leno.

Like I said: random. I was going to make my favorite bowl of oats but then thought this “sampler” platter was more fun. I still way prefer peanut butter on oatmeal than toast–it’s just better! And both of these cookies were still amazing after so much refrigeration, which made me happy. I’m definitely “rediscovering” my Newman’s Own Organic chocolate stash, which is dangerous since there’s a ton to rediscover.

This morning I didn’t have much of an excuse not to get up and go go go for a run. I set my sight on 12 miles and grabbed this bar.

At 6:40, anything with the word energy is very welcomed. This flavor is OK, but I really prefer the chocolate or chocolate peanut butter(Could you imagine that? Me preferring chocolate and peanut butter? :-P). I ended up eating half and saving the other part for another morning, though I must admit I hate the idea of having half a bar around and right now that’s the case with 2(!). After the 10th mile I had to stop; I just wasn’t feeling it and, while I could have “entertained myself” and gone another two miles with eating up the rest of the bar, I recognized this was a time when pushing myself was not a strengthener but would weaken me. Instead I stopped at 10 miles and 83:18, did my cool down, showered, and made a breakfast.

Omnomnomnom. The oatmeal was such a great bowl of antioxidants, healthy fats, and flavors. And I forgot how simple yet worth it raw sugar on yogurt can taste. Maybe that’s a good thing I forgot since sugar isn’t exactly the most nutritious thing but some granolas are practically 100% sugar anyhow so I just got rid of the bulk 😉

This morning I had a really positive interaction with my gym friend, Gail, that I thought I’d share. She told me that she saw me from her office window yesterday and wanted to compliment me on my leather jacket.

Spiffy, no? I got it in Italy the summer after 9th grade and now that it fits me better I find it so comfortable to wear. I also corrected her in thinking that my name was Ian; it felt a little awkward to address but I knew it’d be only more awkward with time and that it was better to correct a problem like this at the beginning. I think I’m going to make it my goal to compliment someone today. If such a simple and little thing can brighten someone’s morning, why not do it, right?

Seasons And Seasonings

Seasons: Fall

Yesterday morning was fairly autumnal in New England. To be honest, I’m a man of extremes, and I’d rather it be hot hot like Summer or start with the snow. Of course, I won’t feel that way when I have to walk to class in the snow. I was so happy when Greek got out at 12 because I had my entire day planned out in terms of “errands” to run. First I swung by the dining hall and then to my room, where I read some emailed and edited(read: spell-checked) my Epic Essay. At the same time I was making lunch.

Broccoli With Red Peppers, Sweet Potato, 1 Egg Plus 1 Egg White With Raw Cheese

A commenter asked yesterday if I eat broccoli every day. Pretty much 🙂 Except last Sunday(I checked). It’s undoubtedly one of my favorite vegetables, and the easiest to self prepare, so I think I’ll stick with it. Besides that, this lunch was pretty average. I felt like I hadn’t had a sweet potato in too long, and definitely needed it here. I was sure to stealthily scrub it in the bathroom first so the skin would be extra delicious. I really was ready to go right when I finished eating. But of course the one day I have a lot to do there’s an actual plot progression in Days Of Our Lives. What the hell was with that? I stayed to watch the whole episode, and headed out at 2. First was a swing by the mail room. No mail, but I did pick up coffee.

I piled on a mile walking down to Waterman Street Whole Foods where I got to see all this weeks sales; nothing particularly exciting, but I was ecstatic to see that Oikos is still on sale! They also had these adorable all-natural gingerbread men coated in chocolate I almost bought but they were a bit out of my price range and a luxury. And look what I spotted near the checkout.

I just love finding things I see on other blogs; I think learning about and trying new products is my favorite thing about the blog world. After that, I hopped over to Eastside Market. Again,t he sales weren’t too impressive, so I stuck with the staples. I picked up a snack at Whole Foods to eat on my walk back.

Seasons: Summer

I’ve been wanting cantaloupe for a while after seeing them on blogs. Just as good as they were during the Summer! This was also perfect because it was prepackaged at exactly .5lb which wrung up to exactly 2.00. I like it when things work out like that. I had to swing back by the mail room to pick up eggs(they sell a lot of decent groceries there). Then I snuck my food into the library to print out two of my essays including the Epic Poetry one. God, that felt good. There might have been some more coffee at that point. I aimed at getting everything done in 2 hours and I got back at 3:53. Score.

After that, I broke bended the rules. I knewI had a ton of work and needed to grab my dinner early so I could work the rest of the night knowing I didn’t have to go out for anything. Unfortunately, yesterday was also this big, special BBQ dinner at The Ratty where you couldn’t take things out. Well sneaky little me snuck in a food container and snagged some BBQ asparagus, extra sauce, and some peppers. I was a bit worried it would leak in my sweatshirt but that thing needs a wash anyway. When I got back I put that away for later and made a study snack.

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Pepita Sun Butter And Maple Yogurt Frosting

Seasonings: Cinnamon, Vanilla, Allspice, Maple

This was divine. The frosting had Oikos with maple syrup, cinnamon, and vanilla stevia. Sicne the main flavor in the pepita sun butter are vanilla and allspice, it all just went together. I read what I was supposed to have done for Wednesday for the rest of the evening; I hate that feeling of being behind and catching up. I’m one of those annoying people who would rather be working ahead of the syllabus. At some point, I decided to put things away and make dinner.

BBQ is a cuisine I don’t eat much, and this reminded me why for the most part. I like for foods to just taste like their natural selves, and be enhanced by salt. BBQ, on the other hand, is all about sauce and the flavor from that. The tofu was nice and lightly seasoned(since I was the one who prepared it) but as for the asparagus I ate about 1/2 and threw the rest out after getting a big bite of mostly sugary sauce. If I was enjoying it like I might have been if it was an oriental sauce I would have kept eating it, but the flavor wasn’t working so I felt free to ditch it for these:

These tasted much cleaner, and made up for the veggie fail. But lets talk about the stuffing. Whole Foods makes the best stuffing. I knew I had to get it when i saw it on the prepared food line. It’s not whole wheat or healthy or anything, it’s just good stuffing. Actually, it’s the best and the only one I’ll eat. I’m sure I’ll be inhaling unholy amounts on Thanksgiving. Survivor was excellent last night. Russell plays the game so well, even if he’s a little jerk. I made a quickie snack between that and Grey’s.

This was a new brand of soy yogurt to me. It tasted nice and soy-y like I was hoping for. Texturally and nutritionally I prefer So Delicious brand but this is a bit cheaper and more widely available. Grey’s was really good. Like really good. I like how this season is going. I think it’s becoming clear who the next to go after George will be. There was some late night oats involved after I did all the work that I should have done by Wednesday.

Oatmeal With Smart Balance Peanut Butter And Baking Chips


Seasoning: Chocolate Chips, Salt

For Leno, I turned off my computer, put away the books, and made my favorite bowl of oatmeal. This is when I unwind every day and I wouldn’t want it any other way 🙂 I think I prefer the agave sweetened Smart Balance to the molasses one; the flavor is the same but the agave stays thicker on oatmeal. As for cleaning the bowl, you all had wonderful suggestions of letting it sit overnight in water. However, I go with a simpler route. I just assume I’m going to be having oatmeal for breakfast and leave it be for the time. I hope that’s not appalling, haha.

I think my roommate got home at around 6 this morning? And my alarm went off at 6:15. Great. After I fumbled around trying to make coffee, because it’s dark again, I also made a pre-workout snack.

The Smart Balance and chocolate is a flavor combo I just can’t quit. I probably should have prepared this earlier, because I ended up eating it on the treadmill and made a bit of a mess. Oops. Hopefully no one allergic will be using that treadmill today, plus I washed off what peanut butter touched the machine. I ran a slowish 10 miles in 85:34. I think I ended up walking around too much yesterday doing errands–2 official Pile On The Mile miles but probably a good 3+–and tuckered out my legs. instead of fight it, however, I let the pace be what it was and went with it.

Delicious. The high protein honey maple peanut butter actually reminds me almost exactly of butter toffee from Naturally Nutty. I was thinking of making my own yogurt with plain Oikos, full fat Voskos, and banana pineapple rum jam, but prepackaged is so much simpler 🙂

We Don’t Judge Here

And that’s a good thing, because honestly yesterday was not the schmexiest or most exciting day, but it was what it was. But before I get going, I wanna pose a bloggee question to ya’ll to settle something: Sweet potatoes. We all love them and eat them, but do you eat the skin? I always eat the skin. I think it tastes the same, and I heard once there’s good nutrients in there. But I’ve seen a lot of people including members of my family who just toss the skin off. So which do you do and why? I’m oddly too excited to see the responses to this.

We got our tests from Tuesday back in class. I feel pretty well about how I did, and it sounded like it was certainly decent for the class average. most of the things I got wrong were those silly little grammar points you forget over Summer but I’m not kicking myself because I feel pretty damn good just being in that class considering I’m 1 of 3 or 4 freshmen.

As soon as I was out of class for the day I just wanted to go back to my room, get under the covers, and watch primetime TV. What? You can’t do that at 11:50? Darn. I grabbed lunch and went back to my room, where I put on my “rainy day sweats”.

I believe if you look up “rainy day sweatpants” you get a definition similar to “A pair of loose, cotton trousers one would preferably not wear out of the house due to fashion but find comfortable and functional for lounging”. It was actually perfectly sunny outside, but I didn’t hesitate to throw them on. After that I plated and served lunch for myself:

I think the only thing that made this salad was asian was the heaping helping of soy sauce and ginger powder I added, but that just meant I didn’t have to salt it. In the mix was spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, mushrooms, cucumbers, jalapenos, tofu, onions, and sunflower seeds. I nuked a flame grilled vegan gardenburger and added some light cheddar cheese and had that with a TJ ww bun toasted; for something made in a dorm room, that was one hell of a burger. Maybe I’m just missing Summer too much.

The sight was not pretty after I finished lunch. I really wanted to curl up in bed with coffee and work on my paper, but I thought that my roommate might judge me a bit for that. Then I realized, we live together and there’s going to be a lot of judging going around but we’re friends after all so what the hell:

Yep, that’s Rachael Ray in the background. Next year I just might have to schedule all my classes so I can watch her everyday. I worked on my paper a bit, which sort of felt like beating a dead puppy(read: tofu pup if you’re vegan) at that point. By 3 I was ready to throw in the towel, so I went to the library to print. And yes, sadly I was in my rainy day sweats and awkwardly almost matching brown sweatshirt at that point. Then again, who was I dressing to impress?

Well I had a pretty sad realization when I got to the library: the paper was supposed to be 10 pages, I thought I had 8 1/2, and I had 7 1/2. 8 1/2 I figured was “good enough” but not 7 1/2. I had to sit there writing for another 30 minutes until I felt comfortable with the length(TWSS), printed, and got the hell out of there. My lunch held me over for an impressive amount of time considering it didn’t seem like much. But I figured what’s watching Oprah without a snack, right?

That’s a tablespoon, if you’re wondering. I usually do that with my peanut butter after I take my pictures because it’s easier to get some good flavor in every spoonful. But I’m learning with thicker peanut butters that don’t melt it’s easier just to spoon it out from the get-go. And I used prepackaged oatmeal for this. Don’t judge me. Actually I never use any prepackaged oats except for Kashi Creamy Vanilla. I don’t know why but I love these and their awesome nutrition loves me back. I made a recipe with them that I’m really hoping gets picked up by the company. If you ever need oats on the go, I suggest these.

It was National Poetry Day yesterday as you must have heard. I celebrated by doing my homework, which was to translate a hell of a lot of Latin poetry. Fun, eh? What was fun was finding Top Chef online, which I haven’t watched in far too long and got caught up with. I needed a snack so I grabbed this from my fridge:

I know what you couldn’t possibly be thinking, and no, my cafeteria doesn’t serve vitatops. I snuck a peek at the menu and knew to bring my own. Honestly, nothing really jumped out this time, but I didn’t want to not eat with people so I tried the chicken. There really wasn’t anything tequila & lime(not that I’d actually know) to this; it just tasted like a bland cream sauce. The green beans were alarmingly perfect and almost too bright if that’s possible. And my original review of the corn vitatop wasn’t spectacular, but I actually really liked it hear. I think the sweetness balanced better with the cream sauce than the bison burger I had my first taste with. Ironically, it was also probably more nutritious than the corn niblets or Mexican corn bread and bean dish that was being offered.

Well that left room for a quick dessert during Survivor. I heated up the last of my Banana Goodness Bread and threw in some plain yogurt. Chocolatey, hot carbs with cool, creamy yogurt? Yeah I was game. I’m going to need to make a new loaf soon; maybe a weekend project? We shall see. So at 9 I decided that nothing was on TV and I went out of the dorm… I didn’t think I could fool you. Of course I attended the wedding of the year century. I thought for the first 50 minutes it was a good episode of The Office, but not what I was hoping for for the wedding. But then the end with the dance and the eloping totally made it all for me; I went to Niagra Falls 4 years ago and I must say that getting married right there on the boat was a spectacular idea(for fictional characters…).

I’m not even going to play and try to tell you you weren’t missing anything with this, because you entirely were. Everything on here was lovin’ to the tongue. And it totally helped that the muffin and cookie spent quality time in the microwave so they were nice, warm carbs. I’ve been asked what kind of muffins I buy; they’re from a bakery called Zen Bakery. They don’t seem too widely available but if you’re from MA or CA you might have some luck. I’ve never found them but word on their site is they have carrot cake muffins and whole wheat peanut butter carob chip cookies. This is definitely my kind of bakery.

Well let’s just say this was on rollercoaster of a morning. I did not want to get up this morning. Again, don’t judge, we all have those days. But I told myself to get my butt out of bed and at least do something on the treadmill(and I might have done some self-bribing with the thought of Cookie Friday). So I got there and ran. I really don’t think my Ipod Genius knows what the hell it’s suggesting because the playlist was a bit funky but I kept it up. My plan was for 8 miles, but after 6.5 I felt really strong. I ended up going for another 10 miler. That’s 2 in the past 3 days for a distance I’ve only ever run 6 times. Holy moly, I don’t know why or how but I’m thankful I did it. When I got back to my dorm I learned a life lesson: glass should not be microwaved. OK, you can judge a bit here, but I’m guessing you won’t because you’ve probably made the exact same mistake. After clean-up(ugh) I had a nice breakfast:

Can you guess what I was craving? I couldn’t decide between Mighty Maple and Smart Balance, so I didn’t. I don’t run 10 miles to think. I also was craving just some plain, organic, low fat yogurt. I just love that touch of cream, and now I feel bad about judging my grandmother for putting it in her coffee(though the amount she put I can still totally judge). Wouldn’t some 2% Oikos be absolutely amazing? I’m going to suggest that to the site after I post this, and not just because it’s that or get ready for a day full of classes…

I really hope to get to Whole Foods today before it starts raining for some good Cookie Friday action, but it’s looking a bit ominous out. At the very least, Friday should mean fish in the dining hall, and that’s better than a cookie in my book.

Never A Wasted Meal

Yesterday, I had a million ideas for breakfast, and this morning I was scraping the bottom of the barrel. What’s up with that? Back to yesterday, I still had a good part of my Elvis Parfait to chomp down on by the time I got to class, but I mixed it all up so I don’t think anyone cood tell I had (fakin’) bacon in my yogurt. Some people just aren’t as opened minded as bloggers 😉 I can’t believe I’ll be having my first test of the school year in that next Tuesday; didn’t I just move in? Time is a flyin’. I’ll be studying, but I’m not going to burn myself out in any one subject. I love being in college, because it really feels like the grades don’t matter and I can learn for the sake of learning. The internet was tame when I got back to my dorm; what’s up with that? I almost caught up to Google Reader before lunch. That shouldn’t happen:

Nothing really appealed at the diner until I found the vegan BBQ baked beans; I don’t remember I had baked beans, and I don’t even think these were originally from a can! I added 1 1/2 strips fakin’ bacon since I’m clearly addicted to really give it a smokiness. The side was good old steamed broccoli, sugar snap peas, and some artichoke/garbanzo bean cold salad that I’m sure had too much EVOO but don’t want to know(hey, that rhymed!). I think the baked beans were dense, more than I realized because I felt like a 300lb trucker after finishing off the bowl. When I did and there was a commercial, this happened:

Way to go, Evan. It might not had been so annoying if I dropped it after scrubbing the thick sauce from the sides, but no luck their either. Now I’m a little annoyed because I already thought that bowl was on the larger side and the 2 others in the set are larger; I do not need 30oz of soup. I guess a Bed, Bath, And Beyond trip is in my near future.

After lunch and Days my roommate was still around and I just felt like getting outside. Enter grocery trip! Why some people don’t choose to go to a grocery store every day I’ll never understand; it’s just one of life’s simpler pleasures. There was some good sales at Eastside Market:

As much as I love lobster, I wasn’t sure how bringing a new “pet” back and figuring out some way to boil him would’ve worked out. Shame, too. Oh well, I imagine they don’t taste as good as when you get them right on the shores of Maine like I’m used to. I’m also really excited because Eastside Market is moving all their natural frozen foods to the natural food section. Is this a weird thing to be excited about? Don’t answer that. I figured it was time to leave when I started browsing the ice creams even though I thought I wasn’t hungry and it is in no way ice cream weather(which is a shame because Breyer’s All Natural is 2.99 a 1/2 gallon this week). I ended up with some simple loot:

That plus a Rachael Ray magazine. The only two worth buying in my mind are Food Network and Rachael Ray(see a pattern?). I’ve heard rumors of a pumpkin shortage this year? Well it hasn’t affected Eastside apparently since they had a full stock at 2.39 a can. I was definitely hungrier than I knew so I made a snack:

This was actually using an older can of pumpkin I’m working on emptying before cracking open the mother of all cans. In case you missed it, the secret Naturally Nutty butter is a blend of flax, sunflower, and pumpkin seeds with vanilla powder and all spice; it totally hit my vanilla tooth for the afternoon. I had heard it would be available by now but it’s not on their website. I hope it comes out soon because I’m almost out and it’s too. good. for. words. I was so ambitious yesterday afternoon, even making up a little study area with all the essentials:

Decaf coffee is always an essential and don’t you forget it. In reality? I got a lot of… internet procrastinating done 🙂 I think once you’ve read one dead language, you feel like you’ve read them all and just need a little break(i.e. any time you aren’t in class). So this has become one of my new favorite combos. I’m not sure what type of apple this was, but it’s a bit on the tarter side. It’s a shame that the cafeteria hasn’t had more Red Deliciouses for me to steal lately but the tartness worked wonderfully with the mustard. It might have been a Macintosh? Ok, you know you’re a blogger when you obsess not knowing what type of apple you ate. Anyway, my friend I was supposed to meet for dinner totally ditched me because he got an invite to a real dinner on someone else’s dollar, lucky bastard, so I trekked over to the V-W cafeteria.

Well, neither dining hall really grabbed me last night but I thought I’d give this one a try. When I got there and made my plate, it still didn’t grab me. The shrimp in the gumbo were tough and it was pretty flavorless altogether. I’m also pretty prejudice… against white rice that is. I tried picking out the tofu and pineapple in the curry but there was so little compared to the rice I just gave up. After I took this picture, I realized I was going to be filling up on veggies, so I wanted to really full up. I went back and got another serving of the cooked veggies and 2 more servings of the asparagus and red peppers. On the bright side, the asparagus was actually properly cooked(!!). That in itself almost made the meal worth it.

A bad meal always feels like a downer to me–like I could have had something good but instead I wasted a meal on something unworthy. That’s not a good way to think about things, though, so I shaked that thought from my mind. I reminded myself: I eat a lot, and can eat whatever I want whenever I want, so nothing goes wasted, especially when you eat wholesome, nutritious food. That thought made me feel good(and the coffee I grabbed on the way back made me feel that much better ;-)). I got back to the dorm, turned on the TV, rubbed my fiber/coffee baby belly, and put on my PJ’s to get some work done.

The rest of the night was just a bit off. Throughout all off Survivor I didn’t even have an appetite for dessert. That’s not like me. Speaking of Survivor, what is with doing yoga on a deserted island in the middle of a competition? That’s not right. And how are these people being played by Russell so well? I need to be on one season so I can show them all how to really play the game. At 9 I had to make a heart wrenching decision: Grey’s Anatomy or The Office? I chose Grey’s Anatomy since I was in more of a drama mood and know that the Office will be on later today. I like this season of Grey’s so far. It’s a bit dramatic and out there, but that’s totally why I watch the show. About midway through Grey’s things got more normal and I got a bit of hunger:

Can I tell you another weird thing about last night? I peed 4 times before any dessert and at least 1 more time later on and drank nothing after my coffee. My fiber/coffee belly must had been bigger than I realized and I was carrying triplets or something. I love my vitatops but one thing I don’t like is there inconsistency in toppings. This literally had 2 white chocolate chips–that should happen. At least that way it didn’t interfere with my Rapunzel Nut Butter. And the vanilla sugar went perfect in the yogurt. Before I mixed in a little bit of my NuNaturals vanilla stevia and with the sugar it had a really authentic flavor. By 10:30 I still didn’t have much of an appetite, but I did not want to wake up feeling like crap because I didn’t eat right so I made what bit of a snack I could talk myself into:

For every muffin top there has to be a muffin bottom, right? I may be prejudice against white rice, but not against muffin butts.

After falling asleep to some LOUD ASS frat parties, I woke up this morning not feeling great but not feeling bad either; I was more or less apathetic to running. That meant to me just do it, so I hit the gym and decided an easy-paced 8-miler was what the doctor ordered. I don’t think I looked at the stats for the first 7 miles; at one point I thought I might as well make it 10 but my shins and what felt like a bloody toe snapped me into reality and I settled for 8, finishing in 67:44. Again, I came back to more or less no appetite. What the hell? I don’t believe in forcing one’s self to eat, but there are certain times when one would be a dumb ass not to do so, so instead I like to think I “convinced” myself into these:

The vitatop was an easy bargain; that flavor tastes fruity and delicious and perfect for fall, not to mention you get way more than 2 toppings. I had the last of my english muffins :,-( And believe it or not there wasn’t a nut butter I really wanted so I stuck with cheese and fruit. The yogurt combo was all I could think of; if you heat your figs in the microwave for 20 seconds they get extra juicy and very flavorful. I poured out a glass of carrot juice to go with this only to find out my carrot juice is not so fresh after a few weeks in my fridge. I still love the flavor of carrot juice and appreciate the post-run energy it has to offer but I’ve cut back way on my consumption and definitely don’t feel like I need it anymore, especially if it’s only going to go bad by the time I get around to it.

I started the week thinking TGIM and now I’m all about the TGIF. I feel like I have so much to do I’m going to be happy to just finish with classes for the week. Like I mentioned, The Office is top priority, above all that essay stuff. And I want to find out the weekend sales at Whole Foods which those sneaky people don’t disclose on their sites. Who knows, maybe I’ll even run in to Emma again? 🙂 Crossing my fingers!

Our Desserts Are Not Normal

Like all Thursday mornings, yesterday was rush rush rush. I actually finished my breakfast in under an hour. I literally can not think the last time I ate that fast(because a fly usually can be born and die while I eat a meal). Greek class was pleasant as always. Another gem of a quote from my professor(this one’s mostly sane), “A coffee addiction is a terrible thing; I have to wear a lot of Brown clothes”. Too true. You all keep me busy; please keep it coming. I pretty much tore down what I brought from the lunchroom and rebuilt it into a more decent meal:

What did I learn at this meal? Let’s see. Broccoli from salad bar steamed in a little water in the microwave is beast. My microwave’s potato setting actually does a decent job but this could have used a bit longer. “Savory spinach” is just spinach cooked down. And cheese can easily be picked out of 3 bean salad which can then be sauced however you please. I thought the steak sauce, mustard, and maple syrup would make a nice flavor together. It was OK, but not as great as I had hopes for. Anyway, I ate this and worked worked worked my way through google reader, watching some quality Days. I planned to give my legs a complete rest yesterday and just mostly hang around. I’m not good at following the itinerary, because at 2 I was headed out the door with this in hand:

Coffee and chocolate make a mocha heaven, that’s all I’m saying. In case anyone’s ever wondered what this Midnight Moo stuff I talk so much about is, it’s Trader Joe brand organic chocolate syrup. It’s very well priced compared to the competitors and all natural, so definitely pick some up if you’re lucky enough to live near a TJ’s. Where was I headed and why? I think this sums it up:

1.88 a pint for black mission figs. Curse you, Eastside Market, for ruining my rest day with such a great sale. How could I say no? And of course while I was there I had to shop the whole store AND the Whole Foods right across the way. I knew once I started looking at 1/2lb blocks of raw cheddar cheese, I needed to get out of there with my wallet in tact. Well, I actually kept my spending really modest after all.

With sales and coupons, that was all 3.80. I would call that a success, wouldn’t you? I hear Spooky Smores Z-Bars are out there now; if you’ve found them, I envy you. I saw them on their website over the Summer and was unsuccessful in tracking them down thus far. I have high hopes for the Halloween season but not if the only stores I can get to are Eastside Market and Whole Foods. Anyway, I decided to watch How I Met Your Mother when I got back and make a study–wait for it…–snack:

I do not understand Smart Balance Peanut Butter–I just slip my spoon under it and eat it. It doesn’t have any fun flavor, and it’s made to be healthier, so how come it tastes so funky fresh good? The mysteries of life… I really liked that episode of HIMYM and the show’s progression. Robin and Barney are too cute together. After this I finished up all my homework for Friday(impressive, no?) just in time for dinner:

I totally got the “why is that guy taking pictures of his food” look for this one, but it was worth it. I was not feeling the protein or veggie option tonight. So, when in Rome doubt, I made a sald. Let me tell you what went down in that. I started with some spinach, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Topped that with broccoli, onion, shredded carrots, and shredded beets. Finished with the jalapenoes and sunflower seeds. Can we say winner, winner, no chicken in that dinner? I’ll have to remember that long ass combo. When I was finished my mound of green and my friend his white cake with chocolate pudding frosting, he asked me why I never eat dessert there. Rather than open up the whole can of worms on eating unrefined, all natural, food that actually looks appealing, and all that jazz, I told him I have a lot of desserts like oats and peanut butter when I go back to my room. He told me that wasn’t “dessert”. Oh no? I think someone doesn’t read enough blogs…

Actually, my desserts did start out pretty normal by all standards:

I defrosted one of my fig and almond blondies which was perfect for the night. If I go home this weekend, I’m definitely grabbing a ton of figs and baking a big old batch. I love that they aren’t too too sweet but the honey is definitely prevalent, and how incredibly moist they are. Figs are a funny thing, I must say; when they’re ripe, they’re perfection, but when they aren’t they’re just bland. Some of these were ripe; some of these were bland. I was pretty enthralled in Survivor while eating these. I thought the entire show was ridiculous and hilarious in a “laugh at not with” kind of way. Russell finding the immunity idol without any clues kind of p-ed me off since I hate him, but that has to be one of the greatest Survivor moves out there. And when he and his tribe mate were being racist–priceless. Not good, just good TV that makes them the people you love to hate. After Survivor, it was new show, new snack time:

I don’t care if you’re a healthy eater or not, how can white chocolate, peanut butter, cream cheese, and fig not be appealing as a dessert? Seriously, normal people aren’t normal. I was super excited for the 2 hours of Grey’s Anatomy. No surprises with George being killed off; I was surprised how not sad that all seemed. I liked the story line progression. To be honest, my favorite scenes have always been the one’s where Chandra Wilson’s and Sandra Oh’s characters have broken down and gone apeshit crazy. I’m looking forward to what’s to come with the hospitals merging, but I hope it doesn’t get too too dramatic in a soap opera way(though I do like my Days). I would have made some delectable oats during the second episode, but my roommate and his friend were around, and I didn’t feel quite like breaking out the food scale and measuring grains in front of them. Instead I stuck with toast with the best jam in the world, a peanut butter Z-Bar, and some more of these:

This morning was about as “5 more minutes of sleep, mommy” as I get. I really didn’t want to get up, nor go to the gym, nor do a damn thing. On top of that, I was feeling a little hungry which was a sign to me that yesterday’s fueling was not enough. As I snacked on some figs and peanuts, I thought about whether or not I wanted to run this morning. I realized the shirt I was wearing was my Nike shirt from the Olympic collection which says “Just Do It” on it. How could I ignore that? I went to the gym, got on the treadmill, and just ran. There was a giant EXIT sign in front of my machine, but that’s one sign I ignored. Half an hour in, I got off to turn on the TV, because running without it is just a sin. I surprised myself by doing 7.34 in an hour flat. That’s a much better pace and further than yesterday, all on a day when I wasn’t feeling it. Needless to say I was pretty cocky proud of myself. After I showered I was ready for the oats that never were from last night and more:

Nothing was bad about this meal. I baked the figs in the oatmeal which diffused the flavor well. If anybody wondered what kind of Fluff I use, it’s by a local company called Tiny Trapeze, and it’s all natural and vegan. The almond butter is Naturally Nutty. It’s definitely not one of my favorite flavor of theirs, but that’s just because they make so many other great flavors this one gets swept under the rug in comparison.

TGIF! I’m so ready for this weekend, not like I have any clue what I’m doing as of yet. I’m excited because one of my favorite shows, Ghost Whisperer, comes back on tonight; I think Jennifer Love Hewitt makes an excellent dramatic actress. I need to decide if I want to take a trip home this weekend, which seems sensible since my roommate and best friend will both be out of town and wild atlantic salmon is on sale at Whole Foods. Ok, I’m more persuaded by the latter argument, I’m not going to lie. Have a good Friday!

Lazy Autumn Afternoons

How long do you take to get ready in the morning? Apparently I take about 3 and a half hours. Ridiculous, no? I guess considering all I do before my 10:30 class it’s no surprised I’m ready to just sit and read, haha. Before I jetted off, I had an AppleBerry Vitatop as a part of my breakfast.

This was one of, if not my absolute, favorite “healthy flavor”. I couldn’t really pick out the apple chunks like I could the berries, but the apple flavor was diffused throughout somehow and made this so sweet and delicious. I loved the medley of blueberries and cranberries for days when you just can’t decide whether you want sweet or tart, ya know? And that pumpkin pie yogurt was incredible. Give me a few more days and I’ll have a real recipe up and running for it.

Greek class was delightful. I love the language, the culture, the yogurt–it’s all good. Afterward I wasn’t quite hungry and had a lot of email/blogging to do so I went back to my dorm and did a little arts and craft project.

Let’s not even pretend like we all didn’t love the TV show and video games and collector’s card even if it was more confusing than Bridge. I always felt deprived, yes, deprived, because I’ve NEVER had a cell phone that you can add those little tie characters to. So I was wicked excited when I realized my key had a little hole that I could attach these to. Dorky? Definitely. But now I’ll never lose my keys 🙂

Lunch was just meh today. I saw the prosciutto at the antipasto station and my hankering for some baconing kicked in and I grabbed a slice. Just a little bit of meat to season veggies is really all you need for the full flavor. There wasn’t enough at the dining hall to entertain me so I added the last of the corn from the farmers’ market to beef it up a bit. Apparently I was the only person on the planet not to see Emma Watson at the dining hall, and both my roommate and my friend Adam later had to tell me she was there. How could this happen? I literally keep one eye out for her at all times; I’ve just been off my game. I finished up, watched Days(+100 to all of you who know what show this is without me saying the full name), and stepped out the door. Just not before grabbing this:

This chocolate is entirely my guilty pleasure. Why does it make me feel guilty? Not for any sensible reason, but because this has me eating my words. In my day I’ve been such a milk chocolate basher/dark chocolate elitist, but honestly this is one of my favorite chocolates ever. I can’t put it into words again; check out my first products review of it to get the full sense of its greatness.

I digress. The reason I stepped out was for a bit o’ grocery shopping. I went first down to Eastside market because my favorite veggie burgers were 1.99 a box. Yes, the dining hall offers veggie burgers, but none like this. Then I went to my teeny tiny Whole Foods since they’re 1/2 a block away. To give you a sense of how big this is, here’s the “bulk bin” section:

It’s hard to put into perspective with this picture, but try to guestimate the size with the tubs of nuts to the right and the pencil holder in the center. I giggled a bit because I started thinking about the HUGE bulk bins in Dedham with goji berries and maple syrup and how nothing I buy here could really be considered “bulk”. I think I ended up wandering the whole store, up and down each aisle, and got 2 yogurts. Apparently I still have my grocery shopping addiction, but I’ve curbed the whole purchasing thing. Improvement, right? Here was the loot from the trip:



All of that was only 4.83 after coupons. Not bad at all, considering that Oikos would have been 4.99 without a coupon. Yikes! Oikos is delicious but packs a punch on the wallet. Oh and if you can’t tell what flavor Stonyfield that is, it’s Pumpkin Pie! You heard right. It’s seasonal, and I can’t wait to try it. I wonder how it will compare to my yogurt from breakfast yesterday. I definitely needed a snack, but wasn’t feeling the sweet. I chose the oh-so-savory root.

I love how the burger came with grill marks on it, even though I obviously made it in a microwave, lol. Too cute. And thank you, Ms. Everythingtarian, for reminding me of the Food Should Taste Good Potato And Chive chips I packed en route to college; I love how salty and chived they are, and the texture is some crazy nacho-potato chip fusion. Killer. Afterward I picked up some mail I had waiting for me and was excited to find this new product:

There’s a new natural sweetener on the block, and its name is Susta. I contacted NXT Nutritionals when I heard of their brand new product and was thrilled when they offered to send a sample before it’s even hit any of the stores around here! Susta isn’t another stevia based no-calorie sweetener. What it is is a 5-calorie blend of inulin, fructose, probiotics, and vitamins and minerals. In this way I think it’s better than stevia based sweeteners because it’s bringing nutrition to your cup of coffee or however else you might use it. Naturally, I needed to try it in some coffee.

The coffee tasted a little watery, but I wasn’t sure whether it was the sweetener or the coffee itself. You never know what kind of quality you’re going to get when you ask for decaf; seriously, decaf people get the shaft all the time. We never get flavored coffee, the pot is usually stale, and we’re only drinking it for our pure love of sugar and milkcoffee. I digress, when the main point was this was an inconclusive taste test.

Dinner tonight was very sub-par. The main protein was jerk chicken. If it has the word “jerk” in it, it can’t be anything good, hence why we call some people “jerks”. That’s my logic at least. The stew was like a medley of frozen veggies. And I had to wait holding my tray for 15 minutes for a new batch of sweet potatoes. At least they were right out of the oven? Oh, and my friend Adam FINALLY asked me why I take photos of my dinner. Way to go on the uptake. Maybe he’ll be reading this? Probably not, so I can talk smack about him. he also told me I don’t eat enough and probably am not getting enough protein because I refuse to eat the meat the Ratty serves. I’m blessed to have caring friends: misinformed, but caring. He was right though, that clearly was not enough, so I made a fast snack when I got back:

This was totally an excuse to eat the baking chips which I can’t bring myself to just pour into my hand and eat. Weird, right? Anyway, delicious and I ate it to the season premier of Survivor! One reality show ends and the next begins: it’s a vicious cycle. It’s always hard to get a sense of people after the first episode, but I liked the Rambo lady; I’m sure she’ll be a hoot. I’m definitely NOT a Russell fan. I get that it’s a game, but no one should lie about experiencing Katrina. And then there was the Office, which required more snackage:

The Office was OK. I laughed; it didn’t blow me away, but I feel it’s a lot like Friends was: a show that was consistently good and you never mind watching reruns of. I’m super excited for Pam And Jim’s baby. Like, way more excited than anybody should be for a TV baby. What do you think they’ll name it? Oh, and obviously I broke into that yogurt long before I was expecting to and, let me tell you, it rocked. It tastes just like pumpkin pie! Minus the crust, which I’ve never eaten anyway. It also wasn’t awful on the nutrition; most Stonyfield yogurts suffer from too much added sugar but this one has a reasonable 20g, at least 6-8 of which must be lactose. Of course, it wasn’t quite as good as my peanut-pumpkin-flax yogurt from the morning, but for a quick substitute this was delicious. And it will make the best overnight oats I’m sure for all of you who love those.

Today was another treadmill morning. I’m glad to hear there are a good amount of treadmill lovers out there. My one concern with the treadmill is that I’ll start planning my runs while on the treadmill, which is why I always pick a distance/pace/time I want to run and stick to that. Today, I decided I would stop at 8:30 because that’s when my show was finished that’s what sounded good to me. I ended up doing 6.35 in 51:55. When I got back and showered I was actually a little apathetic towards breakfast. The only thing I knew I wanted was a banana nut vitatop which Christina thankfully reminded me I have to review. I just went with the theme and got a little banana nuts myself:

Last time I tried banana outs I was a bit of a bad mood bear, so I wanted to give them another go; this time I diced 3oz banana and microwaved with 30g whole grains for 3 minutes. The flavor was much more even and delicious without overpowering the peanut butter. I’m also really liking Oikos, too, and how it takes on the flavors of anything you give it without being too tangy. And the Vitatop–oh my god. This has got to be one of my favorite flavors. It taste like a fresh banana muffin from the bakery, but the nutrition is clearly amazing. Vitalicious has really outdone themselves with this flavor, and it’s now one of my favorites.

Can you believe it’s Friday already? It doesn’t feel like it should be, but I’m excited for the weekend. If it’s nice out I think I’ll go home and pick some fruit at Tougas Farm. Does anything say Fall better than fruit picking? I think not. What are ya’ll up to? I could use some more ideas.
