New Plan, Stan

Last night, the plan for dinner was Whole Foods turkey(on sale). Well, the smallest turkey was 11 pounds… we’re 3 people. New plan: Dinner at Tomassos! I adore this restaurant, as it’s by far the best one near us, Italian or otherwise. I even dropped some not-so-secret hints last weekend I wanted to go, so I was glad those were picked up. I definitely did not want to go hungry, so I kept snacking on through the afternoon.

Apple

Organic Sprouted Cinnamon Raisin Bread With Macadamia Butter

This was my first time trying macadamia butter, and I have to say the bread really outshined it. It tasted almost precisely like cashew butter(which is the other ingredient in it). It wasn’t bad, and if I were a vegan I could see myself turning to this as a “butter replacement”, but it really didn’t wow me. It seemed like something that could highlight other flavors rather than stand on its own. A little white chocolate with this would have been amazing(Ok, that can be said about a lot of things). We got to the restaurant around 6:30.

Tomassos

I love the open atmosphere; you can see right into the kitchen and the dining room is perfectly arranged for relaxation. The funniest part of the night was when my mom asked our hostess “So is your sister home yet?” with no pretext; last time we were there, we decided that the hostess looked like a girl I went to elementary school with, though we never confirmed this and she clearly had no clue who we were. This time, my mom thought that we had confirmed this with her and she knew who we were, but in reality she gave us a very creeped out glance back. Once we explained things it turned out it was her and she was shocked to come across us. Isn’t it fun running in to old acquaintances?

Pizze Margarita

I had to steal a slice of my parents pizza as an appetizer. This is seriously the best margarita pizza I’ve had outside of Italy, and even then only 1 pizza has ever tops it. It’s perfectly thin and crispy, with an herby sauce and light but fresh cheese. For my dinner I had a really hard time deciding but settled for the maiale

Local Pork With Local Cranberry And Pear Monstrada

I can’t say I’d ever reorder this. The monstrada was delightfully spicy and sweet, but I’m just not someone who can sit down to a big plate of meat and feel good(and that’s all there was on this plate). It felt vulgarly big. I ate most of the leaner meat, but ended up giving 1/3 or so of it to my parents and not feeling particularly satisfied with what I’d eaten. In fact, I was just about downright hangry as we were leaving and other people were talking about how full they were. When I got home, I knew just what I needed.

Brussels Sprouts With Vanilla Sugar

Maybe I should change this blog to VeggieBoy in homage to this lovely blogger(who we should all wish good luck on finishing her finals!). I sprinkled a little vanilla sugar on top because I couldn’t decide if this was a “dessert”. At heart, I’m truly a vegetable lover, which led me to this new plan: Eat meat as a side or seasoning, never more than 1/3 of the meal. Don’t order it while out(I could, but I don’t expect many restaurants to meet the first sentiment, so why set myself up for disappointment?). Maybe those brussels sprouts were more than I expected, because they left me big and bloated. But there’s always room for chocolate!

NibMor Original Style Chocolate

This was a new chocolate I got in the mail yesterday to sample and review by NibMor.

So Delicious Agave Sweetened Plain With Dark Chocolate Newman's Cup And Original NibMor

With a little more chocolate and some soy yogurt to go along side. Yum! This chocolate really impressed me. The flavor was slightly more bitter than I prefer, which was odd because this was a 70% and that’s usually my perfect number. But overall the flavor was good. And I couldn’t get over the fact that this was entirely organic and raw! Seriously, that part astounded me as I couldn’t taste any difference. After posting my peanut butter cookie recipe, a snack plate was in order.

Peanut Butter Cookie, Deep Chocolate Vitatop, Advent Chocolate With Smart Balance Peanut Butter

I don’t think they’re quite as good after being frozen from a week, but oh well. Not quite as good still equaled damn fine for a “healthy” cookie. I ended up getting to bed before 11:30, only to wake up around 3:45 and having difficulty falling back to sleep; I think I was either in anticipation of the snow or workout(both to come). I ended up making some 4am oatmeal to settle myself.

Oatmeal With Honey

McLure's Clover Honey

I don’t usually sweeten my oatmeal with stevia or anything; in fact, I like salty oats. But I thought I’d try out my new honey as I definitely was having a bear’s tooth for it. I only did 1/2 a tablespoon(I was trying tog et back to sleep after all), so I didn’t get a lot of flavor, but what I could taste was so nice and pure. I can’t believe I got this for only $4. I did eventually get to bed, and the snow outside was soooo amazing when I woke up.

7:30am

Could you think of something better to wake up to? Well I spared no time in starting my quest to find some good at home workouts to do over the next 30 days if that’s going to be the case. This morning, I did an overall body core workout first which kicked my butt. I need to readjust it for my level before I go and post anything. That took 30 minutes, and afterwards I did stair iterations for 200 flights, which took another 60 minutes. I was literally dripping sweat by the end but it felt soo good. New plan: Get a workout in every day, even if it’s just some light walking around. You’ll feel so much better once you do! And being couped up at home doesn’t have to be an excuse to get out of exercise. I was so ready for breakfast after showering.

Pumpkin Oatmeal WIth Mighty Maple And Pumkin Cream Cheese

Boulevard's Organic Hot Chocolate With Vegan Fluff

This was perfect for a snowy day. I know she wasn’t the first person ever to do this, but Brandi deserves a huge shout out for reminding me of hot cocoa and fluff. The combination of Boulevard’s Organic and vegan marshmallow spread couldn’t have been simpler and tastier. And I just love my pumpkin oats with mighty maple and pumpkin cream cheese(as I’m sure you’ve figured out by now). But that brings me to a final new plan: Get 2 sources of probiotics a day. Actually, this is a rather old plan of mine, and something I generally do, but I think I need to remind myself of this one. Probiotics from fortified foods is so good for the digestive system and I shouldn’t be skimping. If that means I have to eat frozen yogurt at night, who’s to complain? 😉 Clearly there weren’t any at breakfast which just means I’m going to need to fit them in a bit later.

I can’t believe how much it’s still snowing; this is too perfect!

A Day Without Sun

Posted on November 15, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Yesterday, it was New England’s turn to feel a bit of Ida. Jealous Much? Didn’t think so. It basically rained all day, at sometimes pouring buckets. Not like I went outside much anyway because I was catching up on work, but the general atmosphere was a bit bland and gloomy. I found in that time I loved reading your delightful blogs with sunny pictures all the more, and that definitely powered me through the day 🙂 After about 3 cups of coffee, I settled on a breakfast.

November 14th 001

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Mighty Maple And Tempeh Bacon, Peanut Butter Greek yogurt With Tempeh Bacon

This had salty-sweet all over it. I love the smokiness of the tempeh bacon with the vanilla and maple flavors. And I ate it in bed 🙂 I really could eat any meal in bed since that’s about 2 feet from where I normally do, but for some reason it felt more special on a rest day. While I was eating this I caught up on HIMYM, 30 Rock, and The Office. The last one was by far the funniest of the group this week. That last scene–hilarious! And I really hope Barney and Robin aren’t through for good 😦 Afterwards, my laundry was ready.

November 14th 005

Clean Laundry

I’m really glad no one’s awake when I am because then it wasn’t so weird to think “I want these pajamas I’m wearing to be washed, too” while I was at the machines and stripped down to my boxers. As weird as it is, putting away laundry is one of the few chores I like. I don’t know why, but I find it calming, like putting away the dishes. Things I don’t like: vacuuming, cleaning hard surfaces, making the bed. I wasn’t hungry for lunch until almost 2, but I was quite pleased with what I ended up whipping together.

November 14th 007

Runny Eggs, Vermont Sweet Bread, Broccoli

November 14th 010

Strawberry Marmalade With Orange Liquer

My microwaving of eggs isn’t perfect, but it’s definitely better. Nothing exploded this time 🙂 I love the vermont sweet bread; I think you can taste the hint of maple syrup. And to top it all off I had some jam on the side to dip anything and everything in. Overall, the eggs and bread “breakfast style” were very satisfying. Some study snacks followed.

November 14th 012

Zevia Twist And Wintergreen Newman's Own Organic Mints

Because when you’re studying, you need carbonation and good breath to focus. I ended up spending most of the afternoon working on my final essay. There was a made for TV movie on which was, by all accounts, pretty crappy, but sometimes the crappy movies are the most entertaining ones. It took a fellow blog to remind–yes, remind–me that I had pumpkin bread in the fridge from last weekend.

November 14th 016

Pumpkin Bread With Chocolate Chips

Yum! I like baking breads plain sometimes so you can mush in chocolate chips when you feel like them or just leave them out if you aren’t in the mood. After 30 seconds in the microwave this was good to go. A bit of sunshine came to my day when a friend from high school who was visiting another friend came to campus. Major props to them for finding my dorm at the worst hour of the storm; they stopped by my dorm and I put aside the books to chat for 15 minutes before they had to head off. After that it was back to writing, and a bit of eating.

November 14th 017

Chobani With Pepita Sun Butter

I’m not a total fan of nut butters in yogurt but this was good nevertheless. If anything, it was good just to have a spoonful of pepita sun butter 🙂 I actually finished that essay(wahoo!) and then got a text that my dinner plans fell through, 30 minutes before the fact at a time when I had not much in the fridge to fall back on(not wahoo). I decided to head off to Thayer Street to see if any new plans might emerge.

November 14th 022

Starbucks Decaf

First up was Starbucks because I had a coupon for a free tall coffee that expired tomorrow. I love making them make me decaf. Is that a bad thing to enjoy? I figure they’re getting paid to make coffee so they might as well make coffee. After looking at all the restaurants, I decided there wasn’t anything I wanted. Thayer Street has some great sit down places if you want to pay sit down prices, but I was feeling frugal. Instead I went to see what I could get from The Ratty.

November 14th 024

Vegetable Medley, Vegan Spicy Dahl

I don’t remember the last time I ate only dining hall food in my room; this might have been a first. I’m no Indian food expert at all, but this dahl was good, or at least as good as what I had from Whole Foods, and it would have cost me much less. But when they said spicy, they meant spicy. I almost had to call it quits. I like that they kept the skin on the potatoes for some fiber, too.

Is it to early for Christmas music? I hope not, because I had that playing all not. Oh well, if it is, there wasn’t anyone around to be judging 🙂 On Mythbusters they intertwined page by page 2 phone books and it wouldn’t pull apart at all except with the aid of two tanks. It was ridiculous! I knew those things are dangerous. Eventually I had a snack that hit the spot just right.

November 14th 002

Banana Oats With Butter Toffee Peanut Butter, Cinnamon-Vanilla Frosting, And A Glass Of Silk Nog

This was a spice extravaganza. In the oats was cinnamon and vanilla powder, and in the frosting was cinnamon and Silk eggnog. More eggnog was reserved for the side 🙂 I love it! It needs a little stevia to sweeten up to my level but once it’s there it’s perfect. Why do things like this have to be seasonal? I couldn’t imagine not having this now. Speaking of seasonal…

November 14th 006

Spooky Smores Z-Bar

Things got a little spooky before bed, but no one was harmed 😉 I forgot how good these were and how I need to stock up! They should still be out for a while even though Halloween’s over, right?

This morning I woke up at 8:30 with a little nudge from the alarm. I hung around until I knew the gym would be open, but when I got outside I realized how warm it was. No sun still, but perfect running temp. I changed my plans, grabbed this bar, and put on my Garmin.

November 14th 008

Clif Mountain Mix Mojo

This was sooo good. I wish I had more than 5 minutes to enjoy it. I swear this one had more chocolate chips than the first time I had it, which I wasn’t complaining about. I did a run that I’ve been wanting to do for a while in my mind but never got around to. I went over to East Providence and ran along this lovely path where there were a lot of runners out. I went down to a tree 3 miles out, circled it, came back and circled a little rose garden and repeated. On the way home I ran into Whole Foods to grab a weekender flier which I’m sure confused some people. All in all the run was 9.6 miles and I did it in 1:16:23. That works out to a 7:57 mile average! I knew I was faster outside but wow that was fast. After communicating with my parents and showering I sat down to a late breakfast, or rather a brunch.

November 14th 009

Eggnog Yogurt, Pumpkin Oats With Mighty Maple And White Chocolate Chips

My brunches look shockingly like my breakfasts, and my after dinner snacks. if that were a problem, I’d be fixing it, but my taste buds say no way, Jose. I added a little cinnamon to the eggnog yogurt and it was perfecto! I think I like cinnamon with it better than nutmeg; the nutmeg is a little abrasive.

For today there is some good stuff in store but I’ll let it be a surprise until tomorrow. Instead, go over to Errign’s blog and enter her giveaway for a really nice bracelet. I’m just starting to think about Christmas present and that’d be great to give to someone I know.

I’m A Scaredy Cat

November 8th 001

Tougas Farm Apple

I’m afraid of biting into an apple only to find half a worm, but I went ahead and at this anyway for some pre-baking food yesterday morning. It was from the 10lbs we picked last weekend.

November 8th 002

Vegan Pumpkin Molasses Cookies

I’m afraid of how many eggs I might have used making these so many times except for the fact that they’re vegan. Seriously, though, what is this? Batch number 3 or 4? We just go through them like wildfire around here. While these were cooling and my other baking project was cooking, I went ahead and had breakfast.

November 8th 006

French Toast Oatmeal, Nog Greek Yogurt With Nutmeg

I’m afraid of eggs exploding on my in the microwave, but that seems not to be an issue when I make french toast oats. The eggnog yogurt was awesome; all it was was 6oz plain Oikos, 7 drops vanilla stevia, and 1/4 cup of this:

November 8th 004

Silk Nog

I’m afraid of what I’m going to do when this is out of season. I asked my mom to buy me this from Hannaford since it’s the only place I’ve seen it and it is so good. I don’t remember the last time I had “real eggnog” and I don’t care after this. It tastes just fine in all its vegan-self 🙂

November 8th 009

Pumpkin Bread Hull With Chocolate Chips

I’m afraid of losing recipes, which is why I’m glad to have a blog to post them on.

Moist Moist Pumpkin Bread

Ingredients:

7.5oz canned pumpkin

2 eggs

1/2 cup cinnamon applesauce

1/3 cup water

1 cup brown or turbinado sugar

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

1/4 teaspoon ginger

November 8th 007

Pumpkin Bread Loaf

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and prepare a 9×5 loaf pan. In a large bowl, mix pumpkin puree, eggs, applesauce, water, and sugar. In another bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, and spices. When dry are evenly mixed, dump into the wet while stirring. Stir only until no more dry ingredients can be seen, but take care not to over mix. Pour batter into pans and put in oven until a knife in the center comes out barely wettened, or about 50 minutes. Let sit in pans for 10 minutes and then remove.

I’m afraid of how many miles we’re all piling on together. Guys(and gals), we’re rocking it. These numbers people are posting are incredible. I ended up for a 6.7 mile run around my neighborhood. One thing I don’t like about not running first thing is that my energy levels feel so much lower. I felt like I could’ve stopped at any point but I really wanted to finish what I set out to do.

November 8th 012

Bison Medallion, Grilled Sweet Potato Fries, Parsnips

I’m afraid of red meat, but not bison. At much lower cholesterol and saturated fat levels with all the same flavor, what’s not to love? I’m clearly never afraid to eat my meat slightly undercooked. And the sweet potato fries were all my mom’s idea! She knows what her lil’ blogger wants when he comes home 🙂

November 8th 014

Giovanni's White Chocolate With Cranberry Gelato

I’m afraid that if I didn’t eat this while walking out the door to go back to my dorm, I might have had the whole pint. This stuff rocked. It tasted like straight up white chocolate. It’s made by a local company based in Newton, MA in small batches. This was pure decadence, and I love that the ingredients were just milk, cream, white chocolate, cranberries, and emulsifier.

I’m afraid that this semester has been a bit of a waste of money food-wise. I’m on the best food plan option which gives me more dining hall visits than I know what to do with, and honestly, I love buying and making my own food; it’s one of those things that makes me feel valuable and responsible. Despite that fear, we stopped at Whole Foods and Eastside Market on the way back.

November 8th 018

Groceries

I’m afraid that I’m going to get arrested, because at the prices I got some of this stuff for it was practically a steal. With sales and store coupon, the Oikos normally 2.19 was .25 and the chocolate bar usually 3.00 was 1.25. And a jar of ginger preserves was only 2.69! We thought it was a misprint since that’s cheaper than most of the store brand fruit jams, but it was correct.

I’m afraid to ask what happened Saturday night when I wasn’t in my room. My roommate left a note saying he had people over and someone dropped something that went behind my bed so they had to move a few things to get to it and tidy up after themselves. That’s all well and good, but, uhh, why was my comforter made on my bed upside down? Do I want to know?

November 8th 020

Pumpkin Bread With Ginger Spread, Nog Greek Yogurt, Smart Balance Peanut Butter

I’m afraid I’m a little confused what season it is between pumpkin bread and nog Greek yogurt. Is it Christmas yet? Or am I supposed to halt for Thanksgiving? And are we officially done with Halloween or can I bust a spooky s’mores out from time to time? Someone please clarify.

I’m afraid of losing the remarkable friends I made in high school. Thankfully, that doesn’t look like it’s happening anytime soon, because they were there for me when I needed to do some Facebook ranting about my next semester schedule which took a backwards turn after thing started looking too good to be true.

November 8th 021

Blue State Decaf

I’m afraid of spilling coffee grounds everywhere in my dorm room, so I went out for coffee. There was a heaping amount of cinnamon involved. I don’t actually get the change of flavor this supposedly has on coffee, but cinnamon’s supposedly good for us and it’s free so I went ahead and shaked liberally.

November 8th 023

Flamegrilled Vegan Gardenburger With TJ Ketchup, Pumpkin Oats With Mighty Maple And Tempeh Bacon

And I’m afraid of sharing how random my dinner was last night, but I’m a food blogger and I’d be an awful one to deprive you of this laugh. I was feeling quite lethargic(vocab word!) and decided rather than forcing a “real” dinner on myself to just eat what I could convince myself into. Last night, that was pumpkin oatmeal(a vegetable and a grain) with a gardenburger, tempeh bacon, and mighty maple(3 delicious and vegan sources of protein). See? It was well rounded in the end.

I’m afraid the people on my floor must have thought “Who is that nut blaring and belting Sugarland?”

November 8th 002

So Delicious Plain Soy Yogurt With Chai Dagoba Milk Chocolate And Ginger Preserves

I’m afraid that I give off the impression that all I eat is yogurt and chocolate. Except that’s probably the truth. They just work so well together in my opinion, how could you not love it? This new bar, even though it supposedly had chai and ginger in it, didn’t taste very special. Maybe I need to have it again.

I’m afraid to admit how little productivity got accomplished yesterday.

November 8th 005

Oikos With A Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup

I’m afraid that my eats were a bit stress affected last night, because they sure were off. First I decided that this Oikos was taking up too much space in the fridge, so it needed to be eaten with a milk chocolate Newman’s Own Organic peanut butter cup.

November 8th 006

Whole Wheat Cinnamon Raisin Roll With Cream Cheese Frosting

Then I made myself this beauty but decided that I didn’t really want this and threw it out after two bites.   hate throwing anything out, but a began whole wheat cinnamon roll tops those charts, especially when it’s my last one. I just don’t know what got into me.

November 8th 009

Sweet Vermont Toast With Cookie Dough Peanut Butter

I’m afraid of running out of hard to find peanut butters, but that doesn’t stop me from eating them. The only store I know that sells this is Roche Bros. for an arm and a leg but it’s so good I’ll have to buy another when it’s gone.

I’m afraid Brothers And Sisters is going to get screwed by the Emmy’s like the best shows usually do. But last night convinced me yet again it’s one of the best dramas on TV. Please tell me someone else saw the head shaving seen with Kitty; that was just so moving.

I’m afraid of falling asleep in class today because I had horrible insomnia last night. Despite trying to go to bed at 11, I don’t think I fell asleep until 1. Sugar was probably to blame. I had a few TJ mini peanut butter cups at the end of Brothers And Sisters as well, and no oatmeal last night(besides dinner) to slow down those quick carbs.

November 8th 014

Peanut Butter Z-Bar

I’m afraid of depleting my bar stash because that means I need to buy more. I ate this around 12:45. I think the bready carbs are part of what helped me fall asleep.

November 8th 016

Clif Peanut Butter And Jelly Mojo Dipped

I’m afraid of having to go to the bathroom while running at the gym because I feel like getting off the treadmill makes everything less of an accomplishment. Thankfully, that didn’t happen today. In fact, I set a new distance PR of 14 miles in 1:55:22!! I truly felt I needed to have a kick-butt workout to sweat out anything negative even though I only had 5 hours of sleep. The Mojo above was eaten around mile 10.

I’m afraid people think I’m crazy for watching cartoon network at 7am. But I just could not care less about whatever’s on CNN, and I’m not going to slog on a treadmill for 2 hours watching something I have no interest in because it’s the adult thing to watch.

November 8th 019

Kashi Strawberry Flax Waffles With Strawberry Jam And Vanilla Almond Butter, Pumpkin Peanut Maple Soy Yogurt With Chocolate Chips

I’m afraid I might have lost a pound or so after these past few weeks/month of higher mileage, so feel free to kick me in the butt if I’m slacking on my eats, k? You won’t find that this morning. The Kashi waffles had on it vanilla almond butter by Naturally Nutty and Wild Oats strawberry jam(great combo). I’m not a huge fan of this new brand soy yogurt I bought last week because it’s so thin and doesn’t have much of a funky flavor at all, but it thickened nicely with peanut flour and pumpkin, topped with maple syrup and chocolate chips.

I’m afraid of skipping classes, even though that’s supposedly “OK” in college. If I weren’t afraid, I’d probably stay in my dorm and work on my essays today, but I’ll probably wind up going to all 3.

I’m afraid that you’re going to win and not me if I mention this amazing contest at Chocolate Covered Katie for some serious foodie appliance lovin’

So tell me, what are you afraid of?

Disclaimer: This post was about 20% serious and 80% me having fun. Isn’t that the way life should be 😛

I’ve Got A Hot Dog

Posted on November 1, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update, Recipe | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

And, yes, I’m talking about this stud:

Montana

Montana

This is what he looks like 2 minutes after waking up. If you wait 3 minutes you’ll find him back asleep again. That’s pretty much what he does. Everybody left the house leaving me to wait around until lunch. It feels like this house lacks “real food” whenever I’m gone. That’s why I pack an entire shopping bag full. See? I’m smart–food smart 🙂

October 31st 003

BBQ Tempeh And Broccoli With Goat Cheese

Pineapple Chobani With Pumpkin Flax Granola

Pineapple Chobani With Pumpkin Flax Granola

I listened to the back of my Lightlife tempeh box which says it’s best grilled and skewered some BBQ tempeh. I loved the smoky flavor that it gave it and nuttier texture, but I still don’t know that the BBQ flavor came out. The broccoli was for the green(or maybe just an excuse to eat hickory smoked goat cheese). And the Chobani was a bit of early dessert. Even though I had the thought “I could be having ice cream instead of this” I chose the yogurt; what has happened to me? Clearly, that granola has a bit of flax and a bit of crack. Immediately after lunch we got on with the afternoon festivities…

Empire Apples

Empire Apples

Apple picking! Would you believe every Saturday so far this season I’ve came home has been rainy? It was windy, but not a raincloud around, so we hit up Tougas Farms for their final weekend. The trees were pretty picked but we made do.

October 31st 009

Apple

Naturally, one snuck in my mouth on the walk out. I forget which type this was but I had an Empire; it was very nice and crisp and reminded me of a less sweet and visually attractive Red Delicious. After that we went to Target in search of some elusive Archer Farm’s Vanilla Cranberry Peanut Butter. Alas! No luck 😦 Next up was Hannafords for some general baking and eating goodies before heading to Micky-D’s(for a coffee, of course) and home. Here was the loot of the odyssey.

Groceries

Groceries

Greek yogurt–obvs–, Organic PB cups for an Evan Halloween :-), pumpkin, oats, apple butter, soy milk, tofu, and organic Smart Balance butter. I didn’t want to spring for the organic but the regular stuff apparently has artificial flavor. What are they flavoring it? Just like I don’t like butter, I don’t like fake butters either. But I know they’re necessary for a certain recipe I was thinking of making so I sucked it up and tried not to touch it too much. I was also pretty hungry and in need of a little mood booster, so I busted out the last of my old Smart Balance peanut butter.

October 31st 015

SB PB And Chocolate Chips In A Jar

And then all was right with the world 🙂 I don’t think any of my other jars are quite close to being finished, so I really savored this one. I tried catching up on Tivo and some homework but I got distracted and needed to try out a recipe

Vegan Pumpkin Brownies

Ingredients:

  • 2/3 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 15oz can pumpkin
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup soy milk
  • 1/4 cup pumpkin butter
October 31st 016

Pumpkin Brownies With Pumpkin Butter

Preheat your oven to 350. In a bowl, sift together the first 5 ingredients. Add in the pumpkin, soy milk, and vanilla and mix well. The batter will be thick. Spread into an 8×8 pan. Scoop pumpkin butter into a ziploc bag and snip off one end. In lines, squeeze the pumpkin butter. Then, with a knife, alternate cutting motions in both directions to make an effect. Bake for 25-30 minutes.

Pumpkin Butter Brownie

Pumpkin Pumpkin Butter Brownie

If you love fudgy brownies, these are definitely the ones for you. They didn’t even taste like a pastry but more like solid packed pumpkin and chocolate. I used too little sugar and baking powder, but I adjusted the recipe accordingly so hopefully yours will come out a bit more flavorful. Be sure to tell me if anyone tries these 😀 This was a nice appetizer for dinner.

Salmon, Asparagus, Maple Mustard Tofu

Salmon, Asparagus, Maple Mustard Tofu

A dinner, by the way, that was eaten spread over 30 minutes of being on the couch translating latin and running to answer kids at the door. I wasn’t feeling salmon. I feel like there’s an expectation for me always to want salmon or some meat when I come home, but that’s just not true. I tried introducing some alternative protein to the meal with grilled tofu. I liked the Nasoya firm better than what’s at my dining hall, so I might be adding it to the shopping list from now on, but I think it was too firm; when I reach for the ‘fu, I want something mushy and funky. There was also this humongous apple:

Mutsu Apple

Mutsu Apple

It’s hard to tell, but this was big(TWSS). I ate it quick and sloppily just so that I wouldn’t have to feel hungry running back and forth to the door! God that gets annoying, and is so unfruitful. Next year I’m hitting the streets again. At least that way you get candy for your work. Now I just need to find an organic street… I did have a partner in answering the door:

October 31st 004

Montana

I told you I had a hot dog. He didn’t actually fit in his costume so we just held and threw it over when people came to the door. We didn’t get too many visitors, which my mom was very pleased with since that left her with a good amount of candy for herself.

So Delicious Vanilla Soy Yogurt With Newman's Own Organic Milk Chocolate PB Cup And Vanilla Sugar

So Delicious Vanilla Soy Yogurt With Newman's Own Organic Milk Chocolate PB Cup And Vanilla Sugar

Would it have been Halloween if I didn’t buts into a little candy? Clearly not. This was actually an educational experience. I learned a) when it comes to peanut butter and chocolate, milk is the way to go. I would have thought dark because in general I love that way more than milk but it just works with the peanut butter. Also, b) candy is better on top of yogurt. It feels like a sundae. I wonder if organic coated candies leak organic coloring like M&M’s do. That’d be sweet. c) Vanilla soy yogurt actually tastes like vanilla. Unfortunately, this boy likes his soy yogurt to be as funky as tofu, so it was a bit of a letdown 😦

Vanilla Cranberry was clearly the flavor obsession of the night. I was a little disappointed I couldn’t get the Vanilla Cranberry peanut butter 😦 Word from the foodie is that it’s in Woburn but that’s a good hour in the wrong direction for me. I’ll find it yet. I don’t even remember when I baked my last batch of those scones; I love finding pastries hidden in the freezer. I think I need a spare freezer just for english muffins because they never seem to be where I want them.

Did anybody else feel that extra hour? I woke up at 8 7 and felt both well rested and not lazy. That was nice. Instead of hitting the streets, I hit the kitchen. I’ll save what I whipped up and my breakfast for the next post 😉

Stop Being So Chicken

Posted on October 31, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Yesterday started off normal enough. I ran, ate carbs and oatmeal, got dressed, and walked out the door like this:

October 30th 002

Me In A Chicken Suit

Yes, that is my costume. It’s actually the same from 2 years ago, but I figure I’m at such a different point in my life it’s OK to rewear this one(plus it was like $50 dollars so I need to get my money’s worth of it). I thought Brown was a fun campus? No one else was in costume; what was up with that? My first reaction was “This is kind of embarrassing. Maybe I should take it off.” But then I realized, if I can make just 1 persons day by doing this and having a good time doing it, then it would all be completely worth it. I marched right in to Latin class and definitely caused a few smiles.

I had an hour between class for lunch and last minute studying until my midterm. I rushed to my dorm, logged on my computer to make sure I wasn’t missing anything important(apparently, your blog posts count as important items in my book :-)), and threw together something quite gourmet.

Thanksgiving Sandwich On Whole Wheat English Muffin, 1/2 Acorn Squash With Pumpkin Seeds, Cinnamon, And Sea Salt

It’s not so bad–I could have been eating deli sliced chicken. If the english muffin looks burnt, it’s because it was; I forgot about it while I was fighting with my costume to let me go to the bathroom(full body suits are not for those of us with small bladders, fyi). The acorn squash was a genius idea; seriously, I’m making sure that hits the Thanksgiving table. I think anything squash and salt is good, but the pumpkin seeds really added texture.

I got outside of where I had class 25 minutes early to get some extra studying in. Honestly? I think I rocked it. I couldn’t have felt more prepared going in, and when I saw the terms I had to demonstrate a knowledge of I really put it all on the table. We had to write two “stories” that showed we knew how 12 Ancient Greek terms, people, events, and places related to one another. I definitely took some “artistic license” in my stories, but I think he’ll appreciate it. For epic poetry class, I got hungry. It was an odd time of day for that to happen but I obliged.

Peanut Butter Pretzel Clif Mojo Bar

Peanut Butter Pretzel Clif Mojo Bar

So glad I had this in my bag. Yum! It was great. This was the last of the Mojo’s I had to try and I think it was my favorite. Is anyone else not surprised the peanut butter one was my fave? You can read my full review here, but now that I’ve had them all I’ll be ready to post a recap review soon. On the way back to my dorm another something exciting happened: Emma Watson noticed me! You know how I know she noticed me? Well, she passed me about 1 foot to the right, and it’d be pretty hard not to notice someone in a giant chicken costume. If she had said “Nice costume” or something, I probably would have had a heart attack on the spot.

Well my day was fun and all but at 3 I was ready to get into civilian ware. I also decided I wasn’t as done with this place as I thought I was…

October 30th 010

University Plaza Whole Foods

My original plan for Cookie Friday was a pumpkin maple whoopie pie like I had 3 or 4 weeks ago. Unfortunately, they didn’t have any when I got there. Wtf. Don’t ever walk 1.2 miles somewhere to an uncertain future or you’re likely to have your heart broken 😦 I did get some salmon and Oikos, however, and stopped at Blue State Coffee on the way back for what would be my treat.

When I got back to my dorm I was starrrrving. It was that hunger where you want everything and nothing, and have no clue what to make. Doesn’t that suck? I felt like I was standing in front of my microwave for 10 minutes just thinking and getting no where. Finally I went with the one thing I know never disappoints.

Fluffernutter Oats With Cashew Butter, Fluff, And Banana Pineapple Rum

Fluffernutter oats–how I love thee. The extra 2oz of banana made this super thick and creamy. But since I hardly ever eat my cashew butter, the plop that i had was really lumpy, and I ended up chewing whole dry nut butter. Honestly, at that point, nothing mattered but that I got food. Speaking of food…

Food Bag For Home

Food Bag For Home

This is how much of it I feel that I need to bring home, where there should in theory already be a ton of food. I called my dad earlier and proposed that he pick me up last night instead of this morning and he obliged. That put me in a bit of a mad rush to pack everything, and I remembered what an awful packing problem I have. Oh well, if we were to have gotten stuck in a blizzard on the way back and needed to survive for 5 days, we would have been set. There was still the matter of my own dinner.

Simple Salmon Salad And Broccoli

Simple Salmon Salad And Broccoli

Summer Squash And Zuchinni With Maple Syrup, Sweet Potato

Summer Squash And Zuchinni With Maple Syrup, Sweet Potato

Thankfully, college has made me the king of quick cooking. I grabbed the squash and broccoli from the dining hall, nuked a sweet potato under my bed(well, from under my bed) and heated the salmon from Whole Foods. Something didn’t quite smell right here, but I couldn’t figure out what it was so I ate it all… Don’t even play like you haven’t done that. I got home by 8 and had a pot of fresh ground decaf coffee going by 8:15; it’s good to be back. I just as quick busted this out:

The Elvis

The Elvis

Remember how I mentioned stopping at Blue State for Cookie Friday? This was the spoil. The Elvis is a red velvet cupcake cake with cream cheese frosting with sequin sugar. This is why I say I eat 99.9% all-natural in my How I Fuel section; sure, the food coloring in this probably wasn’t all natural, but once a week in something that’s already a “treat” is fine by me. Plus, this was homemade by a small, local retailer, so overall it’s a quality product. It was just as good as I thought it’d be: moist, rich, and sweet. It’s definitely good I removed myself about 50 miles from the source before eating it or I might have needed to get another. When I realized I’d only had 1 probiotic source for the day, I felt a little disappointed in myself… until this entered my mind:

Organic Peanut Butter Cookies And Cream Yogurt

Organic Peanut Butter Cookies And Cream Yogurt

Yes. You heard right. Peanut butter cookies and cream yogurt. How? I used peanut flour and vanilla stevia to flavor the yogurt, and crumbled in 2 Newman’s Own Organic Peanut Butter Newman-O’s. This was so delicious, but it also made me glad Cookie Friday comes but once a week. All this sugar made me hyper, and when I get hyper I often go to cranky. Some people are mean drunks; I’m a mean sweets-head. One last celebration of cookieness:

Toast With Cookie Dough Peanut Butter

Toast With Cookie Dough Peanut Butter

It wouldn’t have been Friday otherwise. Food Network wasn’t working in my room; what’s up with that? Instead I watched my standby, Leno, and got a great night of sleep.

Thankfully it was a great day for an outdoor run this morning. I slept in all the way until 8, strapped on some old clothes I had lying around that didn’t go off to college with me, and ran around the block a few(read: 7) times. I ended up running 7.08 miles right at 8:00/mi pace. It felt great to be reaffirmed that running on a treadmill at 8:30/mi pace doesn’t affect my outdoor stride. When I got back, I made a very ‘”homey” breakfast:

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Butter Toffee Peanut Butter And A Vegan Molasses Cookie, Voskos Honey Greek Yogurt

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Butter Toffee Peanut Butter And A Vegan Molasses Cookie, Voskos Honey Greek Yogurt

Normally, I’m all about the salt. But this breakfast was sweet and sweeter. I love the cookie texture on top of some thick oats; I might need to make another batch of these while I home. And that’s one of the few last yogurts I have to try and review for Voskos! Honestly, this might have been a bit too sweet. But for those of you who that’s not possible for, you’d be in love with a yogurt. The benefit of coming home early was that this breakfast wasn’t eaten in a rush in the car and I can now sit and plan my day.

Zesty Cook is having a really unique giveaway. This is the kind of makeover I’d gladly sign up for.

Lucky Taste Buds is having a delicious sounding giveaway, too!

Who doesn’t love a high quality chocolate giveaway?

Holey Decisions

One of the other great joys of coming home was finding in my freezer 4 boxes of Holey Donuts’ delicious products. Needless to say, this hungry college student was overjoyed to have such great products to sample and review. All you need to do is look at the nutrition to realize what a better option this is than the competition.

Unfortunately, while their products are great in that they’re low calorie/fat, have no trans fat, and no artificial sweeteners, they do contain artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives. As a naturaltarian, this was a bump in the road. Should I ignore that temporarily and parade these on the blog like I wanted to? Or do I stick with this boundary I’ve set for myself. I really wanted to just do the former and pretend like no one would notice. But the record number of views this week(my 3 most visited days being Thursday, yesterday, and Monday respectively) are keeping me honest. I realize these are a great option for a certain lifestyle, but that’s just not mine. Instead, I’ll be having my parents sample and review these, and publish them in special posts called “Parents’ Korner” or something really corny like that. They’ve eaten about 10 times more donuts in their life than me, so I feel like they’ll be excellent reviewers.

Cherries Or Cranberries?

Posted on October 28, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Before I forget, yesterday’s breakfast was a bunch of new products I wanted to tell you about including Sunland’s Valencia Creamy Peanut Butter, Voskos’ Organic Vanilla Bean Greek Yogurt, and Nature’s Path Organic Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal, all of which will be summarized on the main page at some point so don’t worry if you miss them now.

Good morning. Is it good? It’s raining the tears of Semonides here(sorry, all this Classical studying has my brain in the wrong millenium!). Yesterday morning I left a little early to grab a cup of joe before class.

Organic Coffee With NuNaturals Sweetener

Organic Coffee With NuNaturals Sweetener

And Thank God I did. My Greek professor is still sick so we got a substitute instead. Rather than a placid, middle aged woman we had a bit more lively, energetic Swede with a heavy accent. Fun, just not at 10:30. Class got particularly amusing when him and the soft-spoken British grad student were trying to communicate and it just… wasn’t working. I actually wasn’t ready for lunch when I got out, so I came back to my dorm and admired Steve, the stevia plant.

October 27th 002

Steve

I was told to trim him to be a foot tall a while back when I first got him, which I did. Now he’s gone crazy and has grown 3 feet tall. If you’re horrible with plants, get a stevia bush; they’re impossible to kill no matter how little you water them(and taste really good). After a while of that amusement, I picked up stuff from the dining hall and made a cozy lunch in my room.

Sweet Potato, Asparagus, Maple Mustard Tofu

Sweet Potato, Asparagus, Maple Mustard Tofu

Recently, I got to thinking, “You know, my pee smells too floral. I think I’m going to eat a ton of asparagus”. Or I just love it and they so rarely have it at the dining hall that I might have gone a bit nuts when I stumbled upon it. I coupled that with some maple mustard tofu(so good!) and a whole microwaved sweet potato from last week’s farmers’ market. I have a good 2+ pounds of sweet potato under my bed, so I feel pretty set for a while.

I did the typical Days Of Our Lives while blog reading thing. I swear, soaps never go anywhere in plot but they’re so entertaining. I was planning on hanging around for Rachael Ray but the show didn’t look too interesting and the weather was not getting better. I had some high hopes of going to Whole Foods rain or shine so I bundled up and headed out. On the way I stopped by the mailing center.

October 27th 010

Mail From Home

One was from my mom and the other my grandmother; though the fact that they both have Simpsons stamps and my mom’s handwriting on them makes me think(and not too hard). They were Halloween cards with some money. I love that being a college student Halloween is a reason to receive cards. What I don’t get is why these needed to be mailed when I saw both of them Sunday. Odd people. I also snacked on this while shopping:

Spooky S'mores Z-Bar

Spooky S'mores Z-Bar

I’ve been loving all the manly-men products Clif sent me, but sometimes I need a little something to feed the kid in me 😉 I’m going to miss these when they’re gone for the season. Grocery shopping was–of course–a blast. I found kombucha and acorn squash, but neither were on sale so I thought I’d hold off with microwave experimentation. I found out something very dangerous:

October 27th 014

Bulk Colored Frosting

Whole Foods now sells their naturally colored buttercream frosting by the tub for the holiday season. Ummm, hello. This is a) a dream b) very dangerous. On the one hand, I could use these to make some nice treats that look awesome and I would feel good serving. On the other hand, I don’t see that frosting it making it through the ride/walk home. In case anyone was wondering, it’s 5.99/lb. Somehow, one of those didn’t end up in my basket, but look what did!

October 27th 015

Groceries

I went a little shopping happy on this trip; money from relatives will do that. I got a new flavor of Lightlife‘s tempeh to review, along with my favorite product of theirs: tempeh bacon. Some Oikos and So Delicious Soy Yogurt were a must. I felt like talkin’ turkey for dinner so I got some fresh sliced from the deli. And of coarse I hit up the bulk bins for oats and, my treat of the trip, dried cherries. At first, I wasn’t going to get them because they’re a bit pricey. At the check out, the woman couldn’t read the bin # I wrote down(I swear my handwriting isn’t that bad). Instead of asking me to read it, she looked up the code in the big book and entered it herself. What she failed to realize was that they were cherries, not cranberries. She didn’t ask me or anything, just input the cranberry code and continued scanning items. Since cranberries are 1/2 the price of cherries, I basically got them half off. And since I didn’t lie or be at all misleading through any of that, I feel pretty damn good. When I got back to my room I made some oats to fight off the gloomy weather.

Pumpkin Oats With Mighty Maple And Maple Syrup

Pumpkin Oats With Mighty Maple And Maple Syrup

Can I tell you a little secret? If you pour maple syrup over the top and stick it back in the microwave, the water cooks off and the maple crystalizes, not to mention smells like candy. Oh was this good. It made a “serious” Oprah episode bearable to study through. It almost made my Epic Poetry homework bearable to read… almost. I thought I’d be reaching for a snack later, seeing as how most of this was lovely, unrefined sugar. Surprisingly it held me over until dinner.

October 27th 022

Open Faced Thanksgiving Sandwich, Ginger Carrots And Snap Peas, Broccoli With Beets

There are only 29 days to Thanksgiving, but who’s counting, really? I made the sandwich in my dorm and brought it to the dining hall. On a Matthew’s English Muffin, one side had TJ Cranberry Apple Butter and the other had Organic Valley Lowfat cream cheese. That combo is ridiculous; I don’t even want the turkey come Thanksgiving; I just want the leftovers. So I guess I have to wait 30 days then, huh? When I got back to my dorm, I broke into this:

Green Mountain Single Origin Mexican Decaf

Green Mountain Single Origin Mexican Decaf

I picked this up at the Green Mountain dinner last Wednesday. I already have one canister open, but I wanted to try this to see if it had a more robust, dark flavor. Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite as strong as the whole bean house decaf I made back at home, but it definitely had a deeper flavor than Whole Food’s Decaf Hazelnut.

Tuesday night meant Biggest Loser, of course. Was Abby’s story on The Biggest Loser not the saddest thing? I was not expecting the show to take such a dramatic turn; I think even Jillian was cracked by that. The Biggest Loser also means ridiculous snackage that the contestants could never eat.

So Delicious Soy Yogurt With Vanilla Stevia, Vanilla Sugar, PB And Chocolate Chips

So Delicious Soy Yogurt With Vanilla Stevia, Vanilla Sugar, PB And Chocolate Chips

October 27th 011

Deep Chocolate Vitatop With Butter Toffee Peanut Butter, Carrot Ginger Muffin Top With Smart Balance Peanut Butter

I broke my own rule with this one; I stole the peanut butter chips from a trail mix I own because I don’t have any peanut butter chips. I hate it when people go through a trail mix and screw up proportions. Then again, my love for peanut butter chips is greater than my hatred for that. I don’t even remember when I had the bottom of that muffin(presumably in yogurt). I’ve just had the top sitting around for so long I figured I’d eat it. I’m wicked exciting that the next time I eat from that Smart balance jar, it will be from the jar.

Could one thing have gone routinely this morning? Didn’t think so. I woke up at 6:40… and then again at 6:50. I honestly didn’t feel like running, but when analyzing the situation, I realized it wasn’t for any good reason other than the sun wasn’t out and it was running. I told myself “The lights will be on in the gym and it has a roof. You’ll be fine.” That’s about as peppy as my pep talks get. While I grabbed one of these and hit the gym:

At first I thought that today I needed a running body more than ever. What I got was even better: no one else around. Score. I just put on my TV shows and ran. At first I thought 8, then 10. I was taking it at a very slow comfortable, and I knew being outside wasn’t happening much today, so I went on to 13.1. I was planning to do this Friday, but I figured I’d push it up 2 days. I finished in 1:53:04 which really put me behind for the morning. My roommate was not only awake but dressed and studying when I got back!(That’s not like him). Even though I was short on time, I decided to make myself a nice breakfast to feel like the king I like to think I am:

2 Eggs Lightly Microwaved With Cheddar Cheese, Toast With Pumpkin Peanut Butter, Oikos With Peanut Flour And Chocolate Chips

2 Eggs Lightly Microwaved With Cheddar Cheese, Toast With Pumpkin Peanut Butter, Oikos With Peanut Flour And Chocolate Chips

I don’t know egg terminology. Is it poached when you leave them unscrambled and try to cook the whites without cooking the yolks? Well that’s what I did, or tried to do at least. It’s a lot easier with a skillet than a microwave, but 1 of the yolks was nice and runny. I think I need to revisit that peanut butter over some oats later because it’s just too good. Now I’m very behind for a Wednesday but thankfully should have everything done in time for class.

My all-natural heart was very happy to hear that Necco candy is going natural! I haven’t had Necco wafers in ages; I don’t even think I liked them. But I’m very happy to hear they’re taking this step and I’ll certainly give the new stuff a try.

Speaking of candy, there’s an awesome chocolate giveaway at Run, Eat, Repeat.

Just Your Average Sunday

Posted on October 26, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review, Recipe | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Yesterday was all I could ask for from a Sunday. I rolled out of bed at 8:30, which is about as late as I’ll ever sleep in these days. I had no plans for running, and I wasn’t quite ready for breakfast. Hmm… what to do…

Kashi Vanilla Blueberry Raspberry Muffins

Kashi Vanilla Blueberry Raspberry Muffins

Bake! I hate shelling out all that money for blueberry raspberry oat bran muffins so I thought I’d give a hand at doing my own. I used my lazy man’s muffin recipe, and did 1/2 blueberries and 1/2 raspberries. Ps. I’m trying to get this recipe picked up by Kashi, so if you have connections hook a brother up 😉 The best part of these is they really require no flavoring or healthifying since the oatmeal packets and berries do it all for you. This was my “mystery muffin” at breakfast yesterday:

Pumpkin Pie Yogurt With Tempeh Bacon, Mystery Muffin With Mighty Maple

Pumpkin Pie Yogurt With Tempeh Bacon, Mystery Muffin With Mighty Maple

Muy bueno. It was really good, but I’m also going to be critical on myself because it wasn’t quite at blueberry raspberry oat bran muffin level. I think these were a bit too soft and wheaty, whereas the others are firmer and branier. My oh my, those are words only an oatmeal-lover could adore, haha. Nevertheless, it was good with mighty maple(and I’m sure will be great with cream cheese :-))

Did I say yesterday would be a rest day? Well for the first time in a while the sun was out with no clouds, the temperature was heating up, and I hadn’t ran around my neighborhood in a long time. I headed out at 11 and did 6.7 miles in 53:33. I didn’t realize how fast that was at the time, but I think that’s the fastest I’ve ever done 6 laps around my neighborhood(which has 3 hills, one being a real crusher). I got back a bit before lunch and (re)learned something about myself: I’m kind of an ass butthead when I’m hungry and feel like I can’t eat what I want when I want. I really wanted my “breakfast foods” fast but had to wait for a family lunch. I tried to not be so tense and just put things on my plate I’d eat:

Salmon, Asparagus

Salmon, Asparagus

The asparagus were a special request, which I had about twice that amount of. My excuse is that I wanted smelly pee when I went back home. I finished my plate and grabbed a quick dessert:

Whole Soy & Co Chocolate Hazelnut Frozen Yogurt With Banana Goodness Bread Mix-In

Whole Soy & Co Chocolate Hazelnut Frozen Yogurt With Banana Goodness Bread Mix-In

I don’t think it’s called dessert when you plan it and eat it with others who are on their meals.I felt a lot better after this because it was what I wanted. The banana and Nutella frozen yogurt went together as well as the real things do–Yuuuummmm. It was a lot easier to sit down and study after that while scratching Montana. My parents spoil me, I spoil him, it’s all part of the circle of life. I wasn’t in a huge rush to get back to school but better sooner than later. We stopped at Market Basket on the way to pick up two things:

Stonyfield Frozen Yogurt And Matthew's Whole Wheat English Muffins

Stonyfield Frozen Yogurt And Matthew's Whole Wheat English Muffins

And better yet this was only 3.69. The english muffins were on sale from 3.09 to 1.50; I prefer Trader Joe’s but that’s not remotely between my house and school. The ice cream is normally 2.69 and I had a 50 cent off coupon. It was probably the last of its flavor and I had to push aside about 100 other pints to find it, but I was determined for that price.

When we got back to school, things went as smoothly as I could have hoped for. The roomie was gone; my dad helped me put things away, and I was snacking on this:

Maple Nut Clif Bar

Maple Nut Clif Bar

This was another one of the bars Clif sent me. I was a bit hesitant to try it because I thought I had had it before and not enjoyed it. I must have thought wrong because this was awesome. No lie. Read all about it here. It might have been because I could have gone for anything maple at that time, but this was really good. It might be high on sugar, but anything maple and low sugar tends to be a disappointment, and I would gladly eat this instead of any sugary dessert any day. I got a bit more done before breaking in to this:

Stonyfield Cookies N' Dream Frozen Yogurt

Stonyfield Cookies N' Dream Frozen Yogurt

I planned to have it after dinner, but I guess a little fell into my cup and then my mouth sooner. Oops 😉 I love this frozen yogurt; Stonyfield does not skimp on the cookies part. I take “cookies n’ cream” as the ingredient list, which would suggest that it be loaded with cookies first, and cream second. This isn’t too creamy, buy it has plenty of cookies. And the fact that it’s not creamy makes it lighter so you can enjoy more of it(I might or might not have eaten a whole pint of this before in one sitting before. Again, oops ;-)). Before I left home, I grabbed a good amount of leftovers from lunch, and made a meal out of that and stuff from the dining hall:

Glazed Carrots, Cooked Spinach, Acorn Squash, Salmon

Glazed Carrots, Cooked Spinach, Acorn Squash, Salmon

College has definitely got me loving leftovers more. I forgot how good acorn squashes are; this one was baked back at home so it was super soft but I’m wondering if it’s possible to make one in the microwave. I’ll have to experiment with that next time I make it to a farmers market. I haven’t been loving salads lately so cooked spinach is an efficient way to get my greens for the week. And, of course, the salmon was good again. Thank you, mommy 😀

I must be getting old because I was overjoyed when 60 Minutes was on at 7 and whatever sports event on before it didn’t run long. I wonder if I can qualify for senior discounts at the grocery store? I’ll take the money where I can get it. Last night’s form of procrastination came in the form of reminiscing. My elementary school headmaster is retiring, and I couldn’t help but think back to those days and start to miss them so much. Since when is art not a class? or book reports not the biggest assignment? and what happened to school plays in cheap costumes? or singing song about planting daffodils? I guess we can’t really in all sensibility go back to those times, but I’m positive I’m going to be reliving them through my children some day.

Oatmeal With Maple Almond Butter And Maple Syrup

Oatmeal With Maple Almond Butter And Maple Syrup

Funny enough, I don’t remember ever having oats as a kid. For breakfast, I remember M&M Kudos bars, and the occasional fishy tasting medicine pill wrapped in white bread, but never oats. Maybe me having them twice a day is making up for lost time. This started as a healthy bowl with pumpkin and sliced almonds. Then I realized that was all (figurative) vegan fluff and I really just wanted something maple(thanks, Clif). Luckily, no matter how much sugar you put on oats they’re still healthy, right?

Toast With Mighty Maple, Banana Goodness Bread With Organic Chocolate Hazelnut Butter

Toast With Mighty Maple, Banana Goodness Bread With Organic Chocolate Hazelnut Butter

Now that I have a replacement jar of Mighty Maple, I’m excited how low my old jar is getting! Pumpkin oats in a jar? I think so. For the “Nutella” like spread I use Rapunzel brand. It’s organic so it has all natural ingredients. It also has more hazelnuts and less sugar per serving than Nutella so it’s more like a nut butter. I’ve also found an all natural Italian brand at Market Basket I might try after this jar runs out. Brothers and Sisters was great last night; I really think that show goes underrated. My hunger suddenly woke up after that oatmeal because I also needed this:

Deep Chocolate Vitamuffin

Deep Chocolate Vitamuffin

That and some water did the trick. It might have done the trick too well; fiber is a loud thing to fall asleep to while still digesting.

This morning… I don’t know where I was(figuratively, of course). I got on the treadmill and nothing felt so hot. But I had it in my mind to do 10 miles and this time in particular I really just wanted to finish. There were some annoying bathroom breaks and my right foot flared up again but I tapped into my stubborn Pollack side and kept going, finishing in 83:53. I was sure to stretch my right foot extra special and I think I’ll do that again later today just for security.

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Pepita Sun Butter, Pineapple Chobani With PB Puffins

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Pepita Sun Butter, Pineapple Chobani With PB Puffins

10 miles is a lot of time to think about breakfast, and I think I went through 20 different scenarios, but this was a good one to settle on. Pepita Sun butter is kind of like the holidays in a spread, with all its allspice and vanilla goodness. And I completely forgot how much an addiction PB puffins are; I should eat up the bag, too, before it goes stale, right? 😉 That’s my excuse anyway.

Sunday felt too good to believe that it’s Monday already and the work week is back. Let’s all commiserate so that the time will pass faster.

Ice Cream For An Upset Stomach

Posted on October 25, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update, Recipe | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

As magical as the title sounds, yesterday morning was not fun. Almost as soon as I posted, my stomach started hurting. It felt like one giant cramp that wouldn’t go away and only slightly lessened if I crouched like an old man. Instinct told me to drink water but I looked so bloated and the fact that tightening my belt made it worse made me think twice. Unfortunately, I also had to get all my stuff into my dad’s car when he came. I definitely go a bit snappy when he was questioning me on my stomach, but that’s because I really felt like I needed to go somewhere and lie down. Instead of doing that, I kind of sucked it up and went to Market Basket and Whole Foods. You don’t look too ridiculous hunching over when it’s on a shopping cart. We picked up kind of a lot:

Groceries

Groceries

I like Kashi products; who doesn’t? On a normal day, I probably would have grabbed something at the Whole Foods salad bar, or I at least have made myself something now, but my stomach wasn’t feeling food so rather than fight it I got myself situated at home. By 2 I finally felt a little better and convinced myself to eat something:

Sweet Scoops Coffee Cookies N' Cream Frozen Yogurt

Sweet Scoops Coffee Cookies N' Cream Frozen Yogurt

Should I try and pretend like this was a good lunch option? I mean, it did have calcium, and probiotics, and was from hormone free cows. Oh, and there were grains in there, too(you know, the processed kind in the cookies n’ cream part). Or maybe I should not try and pretend and just say that when you aren’t “feeling” food but it’s still important to get energy in your system, go for whatever the hell you want. I was actually a bit let down by this flavor because the cookies n’ cream part felt a little lacking; Stonyfield makes a great Cookies N’ Dream flavor I’m going to have to pick up next time it’s on sale.

Even though I might not have felt like eating food, I was completely up for making it. I whipped together one of my favorite recipes.

The Dry

The Dry

Hmm, what has whole wheat flour, oat bran, flaxmeal, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, chocolate chips…

The Wet

The Wet

… canola oil, eggs, sugar, yogurt, vanilla extract, banana…

The Raw

The Raw

…and is sprinkled with vanilla bean sugar on top? Well while your pondering that, you can look at my snack:

Kashi Vanilla Creamy Oatmeal With Cookie Dough Peanut Butter

Kashi Vanilla Creamy Oatmeal With Cookie Dough Peanut Butter

I don’t do premade oatmeals much. But I do really enjoy this Kashi vanilla and some of the Nature’s Path Organic ones they sent me to review. It’s a lot simpler than bringing my steel cut oats and oatbran home, too. Naturally, the Cookie Dough Peanut Butter with a little salt rounded out the dish. And while I ate this I caught up to Flipping Out; I don’t understand why I find that show appealing but damn if I don’t. Oh right, back to the bread 😉

Banana Goodness Bread

Banana Goodness Bread

It was banana goodness bread, of course! This time I used NuNaturals baking blend in place of the sugar and a vanilla Oikos instead of plain yogurt to see if it’d come out more-or-less the same. I love how the vanilla sugar on top crystalized to form a crust. Definitely a must for any bread recipe!  I was lucky enough that both of the Top Chef episodes I had yet to see were on right after Flipping Out, so I got fully caught up on that while translating Greek and Latin. Since my eats were definitely slacking for the day by 5:30(just breakfast, frozen yogurt, and oatmeal :-(), I decided to try out one of the healthiest bars I brought:

Kardea Chai Spice

Kardea Chai Spice

Each Kardea bar has 1g plant sterols, 7g fiber, 7g protein, an all-natural ingredient list, and plenty of nutrients, so I knew at least my nutrition for the day would get a boost after this. It was definitely unique and I didn’t mind eating it, but it didn’t have me rushing out to buy another. You can read my full review here. We didn’t actually have anything for dinner, so my parents went to the store. I told them to “get me something I’ll eat or even just burger buns”. I’m real specific, aren’t I? When they came back, they had a big fatty piece of steak and burger buns with partially hydrogenated oil in it. Ugh. I was not a happy camper. But I tried eating something other than ice cream for a meal:

Trader Joe Whole Wheat Mac N' Cheese, Bison Medallion

Trader Joe Whole Wheat Mac N' Cheese, Bison Medallion

Well that’s a far cry from eating vegan. I really could have gone for something like tofu or tempeh, but I would have died if I found those in our refrigerator. I still had a bison medallion in the freezer from a few weeks ago, so I threw that on the grill and made some instant mac n’ cheese. The bison was really undercooked but I was too lazy to turn the grill back on; honestly, it’s a wonder I don’t get horrible stomach issues more often. I tried explaining over dinner that what I really mean by “something that I’ll eat” is “wild meat or fish, tofu, and tempeh”, though I’m not a good communicator so I’m not sure how well the meaning of “wild” was portrayed.

I really had not had enough coffee yesterday so I freshly ground some of the swag that I got from Wednesday night.

Green Mountain House Blend Decaf Organic

Green Mountain House Blend Decaf Organic

Times like us all hovering over the coffee grinder to smell the grounds remind me of why we’re a family. For a quick dessert I had some yogurt with granola:

Soy Plain Yogurt With Vanilla Sugar, Chocolate Chips, And White Chocolate

Soy Plain Yogurt With Vanilla Sugar, Chocolate Chips, And White Chocolate

I’m eliminating the rule that granola needs to have whole grains. Most are just sugar, anyway; this is just getting rid of the bulk I didn’t want. I had to buy this yogurt again because I loved it despite the fact that it tastes like tofu. Wait. Let me change that. I had to buy this yogurt again because I loved it because it tastes like tofu. My mom refuses to eat soy. She thinks it will give her cancer or make her not be able to have more children(hah!) or something. Whenever you see soy on this blog, you can be sure of where it didn’t come from. More bread:

Toast With White Chocolate Wonderful, Banana Goodness Bread

Toast With White Chocolate Wonderful, Banana Goodness Bread

For some reason, I was down right opposed to the peanut butter being on the banana bread, so I went and added another slice of TJ 10 grain. Yum! I always forget how great of a melting peanut butter white chocolate wonderful is. And the banana bread was nice and moist, got a little crispy in the toaster, and the hard sugar coating just made it perfect. I also finished all my Greek homework for those who care 🙂 My professor assigned wayyy too much, and told us to “stop after you’ve worked long enough”. I hate those instructions because I never follow them. I feel lazy if I don’t do it all. I guess that’s just me being silly but it gets annoying.

No running for me this morning… yet. I intended for today to be a rest day after such high mileage. And I’ll admit my feet wouldn’t mind the break either. Although it’s an awesome morning in New England and I am on my home streets so it’s hard to say how long I can fight of the running bug. Right now, Tivoed Unwrapped is doing a good job helping.

Pumpkin Pie Yogurt With Tempeh Bacon, Mystery Muffin With Mighty Maple

Pumpkin Pie Yogurt With Tempeh Bacon, Mystery Muffin With Mighty Maple

Breakfast has me playing the “It can’t be wrong if it tastes this right” card. I hade a huge tempeh bacon craving, but felt compelled to put it over something instead of eat it straight. I made homemade pumpkin pie yogurt with canned pumpkin, Voskos plain non fat(which reminds me about this review to post), vanilla stevia, and pumpkin pie spice, and topped with the tempeh bacon and maple syrup. All I can say is salty/sweet is real and here to say. I also had a mystery muffin with Mighty Maple that I asked my mom to buy for me 🙂 It’s not a mystery muffin to me; that’d be weird. It’s just a mystery to you for now.

The weather’s so nice, I would be a fool not to at least go for a walk later. Hope your weekends are all going swell, as well.

Applesauce giveaway! Because I love things that look like baby food and toddlers can eat

How The Time Flies

Posted on October 21, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

As it turns out, when you’re really behind, an 80 minute class being cancelled isn’t as much a savior as you’d think. Like I mentioned, I crawled back into bed yesterday morning and did plenty I’d been neglecting around the room

  • Watch Amazing Race
  • Read blogs
  • Dust coffee grinds and salt off desk
  • Take out the trash
  • Clean plates and silverware

It felt like so much more at the time; how depressing. I got word(aka, I used the internet) of a special dish in one of the dining halls across campus, so I walked over and it was better than I could have hoped for:

Pumpkin Apple Soup With Flax, Toast With Mighty Maple, Fakin' Bacon

Pumpkin Apple Soup With Flax, Toast With Mighty Maple, Fakin' Bacon

The menu said there’d be squash apple soup. Well they ran out of squash so instead it was pumpkin! I added a bit of flax from my fridge and the tempeh bacon and peanut butter of course. Let’s ignore the fact that this is essentially my breakfast everyday and just focus on how the maple/salty/pumpkin all went together so well. I really hope that wasn’t an oil heavy soup because I ate a lot of it. While I was out I also picked up some mail and got something really exciting:

Lightlife Mail

Lightlife Mail

After discovering their new line of Tempehtation products, I got in touch with Lightlife. You know me; I’m by no means a vegan(more on that later), but I love trying out new cuisines and was so impressed by what they offered. They sent me coupons to pick out and review some of their products. Naturally I was overjoyed and went out on a special Whole Foods trip right after Days and Rachael Ray.

It was incredible in New England yesterday; the weather actually warmed up and the clouds cleared. I walked and read some Ancient Greek odes to Demeter and Aphrodite(because doesn’t everyone do this on their way to Whole Foods?) and was there before I knew it. I must have been fast in the store, because the whole trip(1.15 miles there and then back) took only 80 minutes. On the way back I had a snack:

Clif Chocolate Peanut Mojo Dipped

Clif Chocolate Peanut Mojo Dipped

This was another one of the flavors Clif sent my way that I could not say no to; the name itself had so much promise. Well, it was decent, and the salty/sweet was most definitely there. But it definitely didn’t win me over. My full review of it is here. I’m hoping after this one the rest will exceed my expectations like the PB&J flavor did. When I got back to my dorm, this is what I had to show for the adventure:

Grocery Loot

Grocery Loot

Did you know there’s now a 365 brand of pumpkin that’s cheaper than Libby’s? I’m giving it a chance even though I swear by my dealer, Libby, in hopes that it’s good. I went with the Ginger Teryaki Tempehtation dinner for my first tasting because it sounded amazing. I also picked up some soy yogurt for reasons that will become clear tomorrow and some teryaki salmon from the salad bar for dinner(only 1.86 for a salmon meal! score!). I worked a bit more until 5, at which point I realized I was hunnnnngrry. I would have made oats but my roommate was napping and those can get extensive and loud with me. Instead I tried a different in a jar:

Yogurt In A Jam Jar, Vitabrownie

Yogurt In A Jam Jar, Vitabrownie

If you can do oats in a nut butter jar, you can definitely do yogurt in a jam jar. My favorite banana pineapple rum jam was on its last leg, so I helped it along by adding 8oz Stonyfield plain yogurt. Yum! I think there was more in the jar than I realized there was, but that only made it that much better. It tasted just like a pineapple Chobani because the yogurt had a little fat in it. The brownie I threw in for a bit of fiber. It definitely held me over until I planned on meeting up with people(and an unpictured coffee from Blue State definitely didn’t hurt). I already had my main protein picked out(the salmon) but some veggies were definitely lacking from my day:

Teryaki Salmon, Roasted Cauliflower With Lemon Tahini, Baked Sweet Potato

Teryaki Salmon, Roasted Cauliflower With Lemon Tahini, Baked Sweet Potato

Let me tell you one thing: that salmon was salty. Now, I didn’t even do much to it, so if I’m saying that you know it must have been heavily doused. Don’t get me wrong; it was still damn good. But even so it could have used a tad less. I grabbed a tiny whole sweet potato instead of a 1/2 a big one; I love the skin part and this maximized the amount I got(not to mention the inside wasn’t burnt). The cauliflower and tahini combo I was not a fan of. It tasted very heavy and almost like parmesan even though I’m positive there wasn’t any cheese in that dish. Is this how tahini should be? It didn’t impress me, though I suppose if I were a vegan and ever missed the taste of cheese I could turn to tahini.

Maybe it was a denser meal than I realized, because hunger didn’t come until deep into The Biggest Loser. The blue team made a smart call by sending the black team home even if it was a tough one to make. Normally seeing other people lose weight makes me want food; I guess I was too deep into Herodotus to notice them. School was definitely getting me a bit stressed. What’s good eats when you got stress? CHOCOLATE:

Dark Chocolate Attune

Dark Chocolate Attune

Oh, and having that chocolate be probiotic definitely doesn’t hurt. This was another Attune product I reviewed here and oh my God was this good! It was just like any other premium dark chocolate bar, but had 30% my DV of calcium and 3g of fiber and 6.1 million little critters in it that’s going to keep me running regular before I go running. Amazing. At 10:30 I had a major dilemma. I’d like to be lying in bed in the dark at that time, but I really wanted oatmeal. Like my breakfast, oatmeal won out.

Oatmeal With Chocolate Chips And Smart Balance

Oatmeal With Chocolate Chips And Smart Balance

I took a pretty before picture, but I decided to retake it to show how I actually eat my oats in all its salty, messy glory. I downed this in 20 minutes and still managed to sleep by a reasonable time.

When I woke up, I decided I wanted to do 10 on the treadmill this morning; it completely didn’t occur to me how nice it was outside until I ran the first 3 or so, during which time I was snacking on this:

Chocolate Brownie Z-Bar

Chocolate Brownie Z-Bar

Flash is not my friend but it’s dark at 7am. The gym was virtually empty; I think there were 6 other people throughout my entire time there, 1 of which being my “gym-friend”. She said “have a good day” and I said “take care”. I’m a stud muffin. I ran 10 miles in 83:11 and my feet were really feeling it towards the end but I’m glad I stuck it out. Speaking of muffins, this was a berry good breakfast:

Blueberry Raspberry Oat Bran Muffin With Almond Butter, Strawberry Coconut Milk Kefir

Blueberry Raspberry Oat Bran Muffin With Almond Butter, Strawberry Coconut Milk Kefir

I hope you’re picking up all these puns I’m putting down. I loved the berry/almond/vanilla combo of it all. This kefir is seriously good stuff. I don’t even know how jazzed I am to try other brands than this one, because it’s so perfectly thick and sweet without overdoing it. FYI, don’t be surprised at all if you see the exact same breakfast tomorrow.

I had a very “fun” surprise in store for today which I think we all would have gotten a kick out of. Amazingly, however, I won a contest to attend an amazing sounding dinner in Boston which I am much much more excited about. I don’t know exactly how getting there and all is going to work out just yet, but it’d take a lot to keep me from good food like this. Instead, I’ll save the other thing for tomorrow and take plenty of pictures tonight for you all.

Talkin’ Turkey

Posted on October 20, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Wowza(as my aunt would say), am I blessed to have so many great products to review, such as the honey vanilla bean Voskos I ate yesterday for breakfast. I’ll be sure to repost all of them when I’m finished reviewing the line for the company to the front page. But if you want a sneak peak at their goodness, just click on the links to the pages as I set them up.

Good morning, good morning. Yesterday in Latin class after handing in my essay on Catullus 8 I was painfully reminded of a midterm in that class Friday. Uhmmm shit crap. Countdown 4 days to memorize the Latin vocab for many many dirty poetry words. Besides that the class was tolerable. My hunger was a bit raging after my half marathon run so I had to eat a loud, crunchy apple during class; I felt really awkward making so much noise but c’est la vie. Afterwards I decided for lunch I would not be wasteful and instead eat the other 1/2 can of tuna in my fridge. Problem? It kind of froze over the weekend. Yuck. Also my other apples had gone bad. Double yuck. Instead I salvaged some other left overs and made some more space:

TJ Multigrain Pilaf, Steamed Broccoli

TJ Multigrain Pilaf, Steamed Broccoli

Pineapple Chobani With Nature's Path Pumpkin Flax Granola

Pineapple Chobani With Nature's Path Pumpkin Flax Granola

I found the other half of my Trader Joe’s pilaf, which was still good and not-frozen(does anybody else remember when I heated the bag for this because I sure don’t). Along with some steamed broccoli it was a nice veggie entree. And to add a bit of protein, by which I mean I could marry this beloved combination, I had a pineapple Chobani with some Nature’s Path Organic Pumpkin Flax Granola. Holy shiz is that the bomb. I think I picked it up from Tina on Carrots N’ Cake; that’s one blogger who knows her food. Classes were a delightful snooze. My Greek History professor, who’s always quick to give his opinion, apparently considers The Simpsons as one of the best form of art in culture of any time. I can’t wait to see what that midterm’s like(jk, I totally can wait and would rather it weren’t next Friday). When I got out of Epic Poetry I had a great big box waiting for me:

Clif Bars And Mojo Bars

Clif Bars And Mojo Bars

The kind people at Clif sent me a box full of goodies. I contacted them after being in love with their Z-Bars for so long and realizing just what an extensive product line they have. Not only is their the original Clif Bars and Luna for woman(which, if you’re looking for reviews of, you’re looking at the wrong blog), but others including new MoJo bars and MoJo dipped. They sent me a medley of those and some of their new flavors, all of which I can’t wait to give a taste. If they’re anything like the Z-Bars, I’m going to be a very happy man.

The only other time I ran a half marathon was last Tuesday. If you remember from Wednesday’s post, I could hardly walk after that. Amazingly, I felt great yesterday all day long. So great in fact that I could walk the mile to Whole Foods to pick up two things I was absolutely craving:

Deli Sliced Turkey, Cola Zevia

Deli Sliced Turkey, Cola Zevia

I was seriously considering chugging a Zevia this morning with breakfast; unfortunately, I didn’t have this particular flavor which I wanted so bad. Thankfully I crave things that are on sale, so this 6-pack was only $4. The deli meat, as you will see, was for dinner. I love that at Whole Foods I don’t need to ask if the deli meat was treated with nitrates or what diet the turkeys were fed but can just eat it and feel good. For an Oprah worthy snack, I made oats:

Oatmeal With Semisweet Chocolate And Smart Balance

Oatmeal With Semisweet Chocolate And Smart Balance

When was the last time I had this combo? If I have to ask, I’m guessing the answer is far, far too long. This is another jar I’m almost out of; yippee for picking up $1 off coupons at home! Here’s to hoping it goes on sale somewhere so I can be really savvy. My work load has really picked up this week. I thought I had somehow dodged the Midterm bullet but apparently not. And since I consider blogging my “part-time job”, it’s not like I’ll be letting myself slack on that either. *Sigh* I think my perfect bubble of 7-8 hours of sleep a night, 1-2 hours running, and 1-2 hours walking/grocery shopping might take a hit this week. But I digress with this rant(isn’t that what blogging’s all about?). While I was catching up on reading, I came up with the perfect study snack:

Pumpkin Ginger Whoopie Pie

Pumpkin Ginger Whoopie Pie

The hamster in my mind was really running on his wheel for this one. I took a pack of gingerlicious cookies, mixed plain canned pumpkin with cinnamon and stevia, and mushed it between the two. This was just like a whoopie pie, except rung in at about 115 calories(aka, if I kept more gingerlicious cookies in my freezer than 1 pack, I would have ate a hell of a lot more of these). I didn’t need a big snack anyway because it was almost dinner. Despite the fact that I had pretty much the bulk of my meal I wanted to meet up with Adam at The Ratty to catch up:

Turkey And Cranberry Apple Butter Sandwich, Broccoli, Carrots, Vegan Garden Veggie Chili, Cola Zevia

Turkey And Cranberry Apple Butter Sandwich, Broccoli, Carrots, Vegan Garden Veggie Chili, Cola Zevia

The turkey was destined to be with the Trader Joe’s Cranberry Apple Butter. It’s almost identical in flavor to cranberry sauce and I’ll be sure to put a can on my Thanksgiving table. The broccoli I doused with tobasco sauce for something a little different. I honestly didn’t touch the carrots because they seemed over processed and oily. And the vegan chili was amazing. I almost regretted bringing my own main meal on a night when the vegetarian option was so good.

I read a bit of Hesiod’s Works And Days for my Epic Poetry Class. After learning a language, I feel like such a slacker reading anything in translation; that being said, the professor definitely didn’t assign this 800something line book in the original Greek and I was in no way, shape, or form prepared to read it like that. Apparently, Hesiod was the iron age where men toiled in labor for Zeus. I think that makes us the… Selenium age? What do they even use to make computers these days anyway? Midway through, while also “watching” Heroes, I answered to my name being called:

Peanut Butter And Jelly Clif Mojo Dipped

Peanut Butter And Jelly Clif Mojo Dipped

In all truthfulness, I did not want to eat this last night because eating it meant photoing it, thinking about it, and writing up this review. But it was definitely calling out to me for obvious reasons(I mean, just look at the flavor). So I totally gave in and it was definitely worth it. I suggest you read my full review which I’ll repost once I’ve had a chance to sample this all, but this bar has a lot going for it: salty/sweet, 70% organic, 1st ingredient being peanut, 9g protein, etc. Now I’m jazzed to try the rest. The rest of my night was lame, in a good way:

Cinnamon Raisin Toast With Cream Cheese, Deep Chocolate Vitatop With Raspberry Jam, Toast With Peanut Butter Cookie Spread

Cinnamon Raisin Toast With Cream Cheese, Deep Chocolate Vitatop With Raspberry Jam, Toast With Peanut Butter Cookie Spread

I made plenty of toast to eat up the bread in my fridge. I haven’t had the peanut butter cookie spread in too long. I can’t believe how many of you had never had cream cheese on a muffin; I’m not a bagel fan(that’s a whole other story) so I’ve made my peace with cream cheese on toast and muffins. Also, I love the combo of these vitatops and berry jams just as much as with peanut butters(yes, you read that right), especially when they aren’t too hot. Television for the night was decent comedy, but nothing spectacular. I’m now aware that I’ve moved on in my life from “Mom, do we have to watch the news?” to “Ooo, the 11 o’clock news is on, great now I can fall asleep to the headlines”. Life is a mysterious thing.

At 6:30 my roommate came home and went into his bed. I don’t know what’s worse: that he’s getting home at 6:30 or that I’m sometimes up by 6:30. Let’s call it a draw. It was definitely a drag-myself-out-of-bed morning, which I haven’t had in a while. Nonetheless I went to the gym and rocked out 8 miles in 65:52. It was most definitely an ipod assisted run. My gym friend, the 50+ year old woman who rocks it out on the treadmill with me, is back after being gone a few weeks–so exciting. I had the “I have early class but I want oatmeal” dilemma for breakfast. Oatmeal won out:

French Toast Oatmeal, Organic Voskos Plain With Peanut Flour And Chocolate Sunflower Butter

French Toast Oatmeal, Organic Voskos Plain With Peanut Flour And Chocolate Sunflower Butter

Isn’t it always the case that oatmeal wins out? This bowl was especially good with a heaping dose of vanilla powder and cinnamon. I also gave another Voskos yogurt a try, the Organic Plain Non Fat. I was sure to taste a little for review before adding peanut flour, vanilla stevia, and chocolate sunflower butter. This butter is so thick, it actually makes a really great addition to yogurt, almost like a granola. I love finding new ways to eat nut butter.

Despite it not being 10am, I can tell today will be an amazing day. First I walked next to a security card singing “it’s going to be a bright sunshiny day”. Then I found not 1 but 2 pennies heads up outside my dorm. And when I glanced at my emails I came across this:

Email

Aka, I have no class today. Too perfect. After reading that I’ve crawled back into bed(literally) and plan on blog reading to the tine of The Amazing Race. Should be a swell time.

Here’s a very Candid giveaway with tons of healthy goodies
