A Different Kind Of Raw Ice Cream

Posted on May 18, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update, Recipe | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

I think I’ve been pushing the envelope in my latest insanity.

On Sunday, I made up this raw ice cream, which was absolutely delicious.

But last night, in the fury of studying, things got a little… wacky?

Churning Raw Milk Ice Cream

Churning Raw Milk Ice Cream

I had a really bad craving for vanilla ice cream. Not coconut milk. Not anything other than dairy. Of course, this was the 1 thing we didn’t have. To appease that craving, in the ice cream maker I threw

  • 3 cups raw whole milk
  • 1/4 cup vanilla infused sugar
  • 1/4 raw honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon guar gum
Raw Milk Vanilla Ice Cream

Raw Milk Vanilla Ice Cream

Considering I didn’t have half the ingredients for real ice cream and made this with no patience, it was actually pretty good. It tasted nice and sweet and hit the exact spot I needed it to. It might not have been thick and creamy, but actually it came out much like a Wendy’s frosty. Yum!

Raw Local Honey

Raw Local Honey

While I was waiting for that to churn, I snacked on some local, raw honey. Is it bad that half of the 1lb honey jar is gone?… I think I’m more concerned of the fact that the farm isn’t open until Thursday. Boo.

Oatmeal With Justin's Almond Butter And Coconut Milk

Cascadian Farm's Peanut Butter Chip Bar

And to end the night of studying, I had some warm carbs with Justin’s chocolate almond butter and coconut milk, and some cool carbs with an organic peanut butter chip granola bar. Can you tell I was nervous for the test much?

Cherry Greek Yogurt With Trail Mix, Oatmeal With Chocolate Cherry Peanut Butter

Oikos, Cherry Butter, And Whole Foods Trail Mix

Oikos, Cherry Butter, And Whole Foods Trail Mix

For breakfast(eaten in the car), I just cooked oatmeal and topped it with Naturally Nutty‘s chocolate cherry peanut butter and had a plain Oikos with cherry butter and Whole Foods’ trail mix. I love getting the plan yogurts because they’re so versatile! Except I had to sweeten the cherry butter because it’s a bit tart on its own. All together it was delicious.

Gingerade Kombucha

Gingerade Kombucha

During the test, which took 2+ hours, I sipped on a gingerade kombucha. Let’s just say I am very glad to be done with that one. It was just an awful scenario. Part of the test was answering essay questions, and the questions we had to write on were chosen by the roll of the dice. And it was not lucky snake eyes. Whatever. It’s done and I’m free!

Roasted Potato Options, Kale Avocado Salad, Raw Vegan Tuna Salad

Roasted Potato Options, Kale Avocado Salad, Raw Vegan Tuna Salad

To celebrate, we were supposed to go out and eat. But I chose the Whole Foods salad bar instead of a restaurant. Wouldn’t you?! I got kale and avocado salad with raw vegan tuna salad and roasted cashews, and 2 types of roasted potatoes. With all those potatoes, stick a fork in me, I’m done.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Coconut Bliss Ice Cream

Chocolate Peanut Butter Coconut Bliss Ice Cream

After an afternoon of getting groceries, I was happy to be home for some Luna & Larrys chocolate peanut butter ice cream. There was a little left in the container so I told my dad to finish it. He declined, licked the spoon I used to scoop it, and then took back his declination. Yeah, I think he approves of it. What flavor should I try next?

Fruit & Nut Pop Culture Yogurt Bar

Fruit & Nut Pop Culture Yogurt Bar

Waiting for dinner, I snacked on a Yogurt Fruit & Nut Pop Culture bar. I forgot all about these while I was at school; they’re good for a little snack. But I didn’t realize they contain gluten! Whoops. Aw, well, I’m already bloated from all the stressing it’s hardly going to make a difference.

Grass-Fed Beef Burger Over Arugala, Baked Potato Fries

Grass-Fed Beef Burger Over Arugala, Baked Potato Fries

For dinner, I bought something else but ended up craving a burger and fries. This would have gone great with my raw milk frosty. Anywho, these were some of the best fries ever. And all they were were potato coated in EVOO and baked for about an hour! But seriously amazing. I timed this well, too, because as I was grilling the showers came in.

Summer rain: love or hate? I would hate to have to run in them. But in general, summer showers, a little lightening, and a Little People, Big World marathon would make for the perfect night.

All The Reasons I’m Screaming

Posted on May 12, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

It’s been a little loud around here today.

To-Do

To-Do

Frankly, there was no way all of this was getting put away today, and there might have been some swearing involved. 12 miles I could have done; this, not so much.

TJ's Temptation Trail Mix

TJ's Temptation Trail Mix

It took Trader Joe’s Temptation Trail Mix to calm me down. I don’t suppose it’s a temptation anymore after you give in.

I’m screaming in joy because today I officially finished up with my 3rd class but in agony because my fourth and last, while being 6 days away, I already feel unprepared for and as if it’s a waste of time to study(not like I’ve found the chance yet).

Meat And Potatoes Cooking

Meat And Potatoes Cooking

I could have screamed and yelled to tell everyone what an amazing cook I’ve become, but no one’s been home to listen. Of course, my dog will come running once he smells something cooking. Is it bad that he responds to “little shit”? My grandmother and I have got to get better about that…

Bison Medallion, Seared Sweet Potato And Onion Over Greens

Bison Medallion, Seared Sweet Potato And Onion Over Greens

Yum! I found an old bison medallion in the freeer to thaw and cook in a little EVOO with a roasted potato, onion, and fresh rosemary. How can anybody not look forward to fresh herbs?! They just add so much flavor.

I might have hollered a bit when I realized that some flavors of Celestial Seasonings contain gluten! Sleepytime Throat Tamer didn’t, however, and it said it would help my throat, which has been a little scratchy all day(probably from the screaming), so I thought I’d give it a taste.

Scratch Ticket

Scratch Ticket

I squealed a little when I won $5. It wasn’t much of a scream, but it made my day.

Mint Chip Coconut Milk Ice Cream

Mint Chip Coconut Milk Ice Cream

J’adore mint chip coconut milk So Delicious ice cream and I’ll shout it from the rooftop! It’s so minty and the touch of coconut oil chocolate adds a nice, cool crisp to it all. I also love that everyone else in this house won’t touch coconut milk ice cream. More for me.

Oatmeal With 365 Crunchy

Oatmeal With 365 Crunchy

It’s also cheaper to shout and bicker that it’s 48 degrees in May than turn up the heat. Why the unseasonable weather? Why? Warm oats, get inside my belly!

But what’s the real reason I’ve been screaming? Well…

Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker

Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker

I scream for ice cream makers! I got one a few weeks ago and it’s been waiting here ever since. Excited doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel about this; oh the possibilities! But that’s where you all come in. If you had an ice cream maker, what would your dream flavor be? Or, if you have any specific recipes from websites you like, please share! I’m a little wary of dealing with egg yolks to begin with, so now I’m just thinking of working with simple flavors/recipes. Hermit ice cream, maybe? 😉

For The Sake Of Sanity

Posted on May 4, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

At the end of this post, you might question whether I have an ounce of sanity left in me. I might say I’ve never felt more sane. Finals period started today for me 2 hours ago and go on for 2 weeks from today. It’s going to be a loooong 2 weeks.

Lulu's Rare Heirloom Chocolate Bar

Lulu's Rare Heirloom Chocolate Bar

2 long weeks full of chocolate, like a new Rare Heirloom bar from Lulu’s. Oh my. Oh my, oh my, oh my was this good. It was unusually sturdy for a raw bar, with chunky coconut sugar. Even though it was 85% cacao, it wasn’t too bitter. It just tasted like pulling cocoa off a cacao tree and chowing down. Thank you for my sanity.

Honest Foods Almond Trail Mix Bar

Honest Foods Almond Trail Mix Bar

Is it insane to love the smell of a bar more than the flavor? Because I do. I could have sniffed this all night without actually eating it. These almond trail mix Honest Food bars smell like opening up a bottle of amaretto. Need I say more? I may not have had many to any drinks in my life, but I’ve definitely had enough Italiano desserts to know when a liquor’s good.

Oatmeal With Chocolate Peanut Butter

Oatmeal With Chocolate Peanut Butter

And there will be oatmeal, lots and lots of oatmeal, over the next 2 weeks as a constant “stabilizer” in life. Equally, there will be lots of Justin’s Chocolate Peanut Butter in that time, too. Justin, don’t fail me now. I might have been blaring out loud Mika’s Happy Ending and Natalie Imbruglia’s Torn while eating this. If so, don’t worry, it was all for the sake of sanity.

Vegan Chocolate Fudge

Vegan Chocolate Fudge

You know how sometimes you wake up at 4am thinking “God, I just really need some vegan fudge right about now” but you never have it on hand? Yeah, maybe it’s a good thing if you don’t have it in the same room as you. Nevertheless, this was tasty.

D'Anjou Pear

D'Anjou Pear

10 Miles In 87:01

10 Miles In 87:01

What insane person would wake up 2 and a half hours before their first final to run 10 miles when they aren’t training for anything? Hi, nice to meet you, too. I could have made worse nutrition choices at that time than a pear, like more fudge(and the thought did cross my mind).

Oatmeal With An Egg And White Chocolate Strawberry Almond Butter, Cherry Fage With Trail Mix

Oatmeal With An Egg And White Chocolate Strawberry Almond Butter, Cherry Fage With Trail Mix

Cherry Fage With Trail Mix

Cherry Fage With Trail Mix

I’m sane, and this trail mix from Whole Foods is crazy good; I just had to go back and get more. It has in it–from what I can tell–massive chocolate spirals, dark chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, raisins, sweetened cherries, peanuts, almonds, chocolate coated raisins, and peanut butter coated yogurt raisins. Deeeelicious.

Trilogy Kombucha

Trilogy Kombucha

After my test, I walked a bit and treated myself to a Trilogy Kombucha from the bookstore; I’ll drink for my hydration and health on someone else’s money 😉 Now I can’t believe the amount of stuff I have to get done in the next 2 hours. Will I keep my sanity? Do I still have it?

What’s the most embarrassing thing on your ipod? I ran listening to music in the gym this morning, and put my whole ipod on shuffle. It was fun coming across a lot of songs I forgot I had or wouldn’t have listened to otherwise, and then came this song. Oh brother, how tastes change.

Shape Up RI Half Marathon Race Report

Posted on May 2, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update, Race Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

But first, I’m going to make you sit through the prefueling.

Mint Dark Chocolate And Raisins

Mint Dark Chocolate And Raisins

Oatmeal With Vanilla-Maple PB And Raisins

Oatmeal With Vanilla-Maple PB And Raisins

Not too exciting, except for the random raisin cravings. I think my body needs iron! I figured after a mostly vegan day that might be the case. As always, sleep was not easy on a Saturday night on campus; I woke up to loud music around 1am. Fortunately, I was tired enough to sleep through most of it and got 7 hours or so, waking up promptly at 6:30.

Amazing Grass Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Bar

Amazing Grass Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Bar

My pre-race “breakfast” was an Amazing Grass chocolate peanut butter protein bar. I chose this because it’s nutritionally dense and covers all the macro’s and micro’s well. It had agave nectar for slow burning energy peanut power for satiety.

Standing at the starting gate could not have felt more “real”. Looking around, seeing all the other runners and marathoners was definitely inspiring. Even though I promised myself not to feel any pressure to sign up for another race in the near future, this definitely got me on a high that had me thinking. And then the gun went off!

Rehydrating

Rehydrating

Miles 1-2: Its here! Its here! It’s really here! I was very excited to be running. And I had no clue how fast I was going because my Garmin kept bouncing between 8 and 6; I was just hoping the people I was with were running a reasonable pace.

Miles 3-4: Ugh. Providence is hilly! And the hills set in early. At least by this point I was on the part of the course that I used to run daily, so I knew the terrain like the back of my hand.

Miles 5-6: At the 5 mile marker, I was not on pace for meeting my goal. I really stepped it up and took the downhills like a madmen. Unfortunately, they changed the layout of the course so I was a bit confused where we were going; but I was going and going strong.

Crossing The Finish Line

Crossing The Finish Line

Miles 7-9: Do not underestimate the power of people cheering from the sidelines. I never felt more loved than at this stretch with all the spectators. At a time when my head was saying “You’re only half way there”, everyone else was cheering “Half-way, half-way!”

Miles 10-11: I always try to run strong, be composed, and keep a level-head. At this point, I told myself it was OK to fight, struggle, and swear, so long as I won in the end.

Miles 12-13.1: The last mile is always the easiest. There were signs and people everywhere, and at this point I knew I had my time even if I slowed down considerably. I crossed the line with an official time of 1:37:51 and grabbed the medal at the end with enthusiasm.

Hardware

Hardware

Overall: I could not hold my water today! I think I peed 5 times before the race, and had to again the entire time through. At the end, I was probably dehydrated because I didn’t drink a lick, but it all worked for me. That just goes to show how nervous I was. But I did it! I beat my goal. And I feel no pressure to run off and sign up for another one 🙂

My parents were at the finish line. I really had no plans for after the race but I decided to come home for the day(I really didn’t have the energy to do my own laundry, haha). I made a little breakfast for the car ride.

Oatmeal With Vanilla Peanut Butter

Oatmeal With Vanilla Peanut Butter

Cherry Fage With Trail Mix

Cherry Fage With Trail Mix

I have no clue what was in this trail mix, but it was delicious; I might have to go back and buy the whole bin. All I know is that the giant chocolate swirls were superb. And with the sweet cherry from the fage, it was definitely a magical pairing. I might have to get this again later on when I go back to RI to have for a dessert 🙂

I’m plenty happy being on my couch, reuniting with Tivoed shows(hello, Little People, Big World), and am about to fix that iron problem with something off the grill! Yum 🙂

A Bit Cheesy

Posted on November 24, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

On yesterday’s post was a good comment made by Jeff(or Jon or whatever name he used this time ;-)) about the processed foods I eat, saying that aren’t I being a hypocrite with how I present myself? I say: No. I do eat processed food. And I love it. And I can, because the processed food I choose doesn’t conflict at all with my all-natural ingredient diet. A mint Newman-O is just as processed as a mint Oreo, but I’ll gladly chow down on the former whereas I won’t touch the latter. Of course, I completely expect some people to think this is absurd and not see a distinction, but I very much do and that is what shapes what I eat. I definitely think Jeff’s comment was a good one as it gave me the opportunity to share this all about me. And I was touched by how many of you replied in defence of this distinction I make 🙂 It reminded me of how I have some of the best readers in the world. Oh, and while I’m publically responding to comments–Food Makes Fun Fuel is a blog written by a guy. Rare in blogworld, I know, but true.

That’s not to say I never eat raw foods, though, like this apple I grabbed before class:

Apple

Then again, this was pretty nasty and old and by the time I finished I wished I had something more processed. Thankfully, coffee washed it down and I picked up a new bar to try later that I’d been eyeing. In class we got yet another end-of-semester paper. If I didn’t use Google Tasks and Google Calender to keep track of things like this, I’d be very frightened right now. But I’m not. That apple, as bad as it was, held me over well through class and blog reading, to the point where I was making a lunch to eat in Greek History. It came in two parts.

Broccoli And 2 Eggs Scrambled With 2 Lightlife Sausage Links

2% Chobani With Raspberry Chocolate Jam

For the “main course” I scrambeled 2 eggs with the last 2 of my new, favorite processed not-meat and microwaved that until most of the liquid was set–so good! I loved the spicy sausage in the egg with a little salt. For “dessert”, I sweetened the 2% Chobani a little and topped it with jam; the 2% are really hard to find but they’re soo good. Full fats a bit too much, but plain’s a bit… plain :-/ This is a great compromise. This meal had over 40g of protein. I don’t really track that for the most part, but sometimes I like to check for kicks and giggles, and that impressed me.

Class 1 was dull. Class 2 was duller. I had to take the escalator with my teacher. She’s nice but that’s always a bit awkward. She also smokes everyday before class so that was a bit nauseating to be in close-quarters with. After class I wasn’t quite ready to go back to my dorm and finish up some work, so I didn’t 🙂

Blue State Coffee At The Book Store

I know I’m not alone in loving book stores and coffee on really rainy days. Last year, one of my classes was a good mile down Comm Ave in Boston from where I had been picked up normally, so on nasty weather days I just went to Barnes And Nobles and waited for a ride to come to me. I also got a message while I was moseying saying my dinner plans were not. Not ideal, but much better than learning this at 6. Eventually, I hobbled back to my dorm. I got a bit peckish and broke out that new bar I mentioned.

Chocolate Chip Trail Mix Odwalla

I like the idea of trail mix, but I don’t like how clumsy it is. I like bars. So I had good hopes for this. In the end, it was good, but didn’t blow me away; it reminded me of a Clif mountain mix Mojo, except with an oat base instead of soy protein, and a little less nuts. Since I get plenty of oats on a regular basis, I think I prefer the Mojo because of the protein. Otherwise, this was decent. Speaking of getting enough oats…

Pumpkin Oats With Vanilla Almond Butter And Vanilla Powder

I wasn’t feeling like anything extravagant, per say, so instead I kept it pretty vanilla. Vanilla, in my book, is quite tasty 🙂 I think I listened to all my Bing Crosby Christmas songs at least once while catching up on television. I watched 2 episodes and I still have a good 10 left. I guess I slipped on that last week. I have to say I was a bit happy when dinner was called off; it was pouring last night and I was happy to be in PJ’s a bit early. It also let me have a go at this cornucopia:

Acorn Squash With Macarroni And Cheese With Tuna

Yum! It tasted as delicious as it looks. It’s amazing what you can make with canned tuna and a single serve mac n’ cheese packet. I had a lovely tofu dinner planned but this salty mess stole my mind and the show. The acorn squash was perfect steamed in the microwave in a bowl of shallow water for 5 minutes and let rest.

I loved Heroes last night for some reason. It totally dragged me back in to the season where it lost me. I think I’m a bigger fan of Claire’s story line at the time than anyone else’s. Afterwards I had a snack.

Peanut Butter Yogurt With Strawberry Jam And Chocolate Chips

I wasn’t sure if the strawberry, peanut butter, and chocolate chip would work in sync. What was I worried about? This was delicious. I just love the crunch of whole chocolate chips, and the strawberry was a nice sweetness to the sweet-but-not-too-sweet yogurt. Because I foresee questions on this, peanut butter yogurt is 6oz plain greek yogurt with 2 tablespoons Byrd Mill peanut flour(PB2 also works for this) and vanilla liquid stevia. It has a slightly nutty flavor and packs a protein punch. I think The Big Bang Theory was also great last night–what a good ball comedy. To the Jay Leno show, I finished the night with this.

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Mighty Maple And Chocolate Chips, 3/4 Cup Silk Nog

I like to think I have some restraint around Silk Nog. Mighty Maple and chocolate chips, on the other hand… I need to remember to pack that today because it’s clearly one of my favorite nut butters and yet we don’t have one at home! Shame. While watching Leno, I came to the conclusion that, while Lady Gaga is fun to run to, she’s a scary scary person to watch perform. Not Adam Lambert scary, but still. Now I could definitely picture him opening for her.

This morning I hit the snooze twice and felt totally rejuvenated after my morning routine. Seriously, why didn’t I feel this good yesterday morning? I wasn’t particularly hungry, but I grabbed this bar knowing it would make my workout that much more amazing.

Amazing Grass Whole Food Energy Bar

It must have worked because my running felt so strong. Seriously, where was this energy yesterday? I planned for 10 miles, and ended up doing 13.1 in 1:51:02. I easily could have done the 15 I wanted except for time restraints; I can’t wait until next semester when, no matter which schedule I end up with, that won’t be an issue Monday, Wednesday, or Friday! Even more shockingly, I wasn’t feeling very “sweet” for breakfast. All I wanted was something spicy!

Oats With An Egg, Morningstar Breakfast Patty, And The Heat Is On PB

Pumpkin Pie Yogurt

I decided to do oats that Green Dog Wine would be proud of 😉 These set my mouth on fire with The Heat Is On. And the processed breakfast patty was the perfect protein touch to compliment it all 🙂 Lol. I jest, because if you can’t make fun of yourself, who can you make fun of? The yogurt was more of a thing of convenience, as in, it’s convenient that I don’t have to take home 2 tubs of yogurt because I dumped what was left of them in there with some pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, and liquid vanilla stevia.

I’m currently employing the throw-everything-on-the-bed method again for when I go home today!! Ok, that might be a tad more exciting if I didn’t have to go home this past weekend for the party, but still it’s pretty fun when it’s for 5 days. Later on I have a nut butter review to share with all of you  🙂

A Day Without Sun

Posted on November 15, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Yesterday, it was New England’s turn to feel a bit of Ida. Jealous Much? Didn’t think so. It basically rained all day, at sometimes pouring buckets. Not like I went outside much anyway because I was catching up on work, but the general atmosphere was a bit bland and gloomy. I found in that time I loved reading your delightful blogs with sunny pictures all the more, and that definitely powered me through the day 🙂 After about 3 cups of coffee, I settled on a breakfast.

November 14th 001

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Mighty Maple And Tempeh Bacon, Peanut Butter Greek yogurt With Tempeh Bacon

This had salty-sweet all over it. I love the smokiness of the tempeh bacon with the vanilla and maple flavors. And I ate it in bed 🙂 I really could eat any meal in bed since that’s about 2 feet from where I normally do, but for some reason it felt more special on a rest day. While I was eating this I caught up on HIMYM, 30 Rock, and The Office. The last one was by far the funniest of the group this week. That last scene–hilarious! And I really hope Barney and Robin aren’t through for good 😦 Afterwards, my laundry was ready.

November 14th 005

Clean Laundry

I’m really glad no one’s awake when I am because then it wasn’t so weird to think “I want these pajamas I’m wearing to be washed, too” while I was at the machines and stripped down to my boxers. As weird as it is, putting away laundry is one of the few chores I like. I don’t know why, but I find it calming, like putting away the dishes. Things I don’t like: vacuuming, cleaning hard surfaces, making the bed. I wasn’t hungry for lunch until almost 2, but I was quite pleased with what I ended up whipping together.

November 14th 007

Runny Eggs, Vermont Sweet Bread, Broccoli

November 14th 010

Strawberry Marmalade With Orange Liquer

My microwaving of eggs isn’t perfect, but it’s definitely better. Nothing exploded this time 🙂 I love the vermont sweet bread; I think you can taste the hint of maple syrup. And to top it all off I had some jam on the side to dip anything and everything in. Overall, the eggs and bread “breakfast style” were very satisfying. Some study snacks followed.

November 14th 012

Zevia Twist And Wintergreen Newman's Own Organic Mints

Because when you’re studying, you need carbonation and good breath to focus. I ended up spending most of the afternoon working on my final essay. There was a made for TV movie on which was, by all accounts, pretty crappy, but sometimes the crappy movies are the most entertaining ones. It took a fellow blog to remind–yes, remind–me that I had pumpkin bread in the fridge from last weekend.

November 14th 016

Pumpkin Bread With Chocolate Chips

Yum! I like baking breads plain sometimes so you can mush in chocolate chips when you feel like them or just leave them out if you aren’t in the mood. After 30 seconds in the microwave this was good to go. A bit of sunshine came to my day when a friend from high school who was visiting another friend came to campus. Major props to them for finding my dorm at the worst hour of the storm; they stopped by my dorm and I put aside the books to chat for 15 minutes before they had to head off. After that it was back to writing, and a bit of eating.

November 14th 017

Chobani With Pepita Sun Butter

I’m not a total fan of nut butters in yogurt but this was good nevertheless. If anything, it was good just to have a spoonful of pepita sun butter 🙂 I actually finished that essay(wahoo!) and then got a text that my dinner plans fell through, 30 minutes before the fact at a time when I had not much in the fridge to fall back on(not wahoo). I decided to head off to Thayer Street to see if any new plans might emerge.

November 14th 022

Starbucks Decaf

First up was Starbucks because I had a coupon for a free tall coffee that expired tomorrow. I love making them make me decaf. Is that a bad thing to enjoy? I figure they’re getting paid to make coffee so they might as well make coffee. After looking at all the restaurants, I decided there wasn’t anything I wanted. Thayer Street has some great sit down places if you want to pay sit down prices, but I was feeling frugal. Instead I went to see what I could get from The Ratty.

November 14th 024

Vegetable Medley, Vegan Spicy Dahl

I don’t remember the last time I ate only dining hall food in my room; this might have been a first. I’m no Indian food expert at all, but this dahl was good, or at least as good as what I had from Whole Foods, and it would have cost me much less. But when they said spicy, they meant spicy. I almost had to call it quits. I like that they kept the skin on the potatoes for some fiber, too.

Is it to early for Christmas music? I hope not, because I had that playing all not. Oh well, if it is, there wasn’t anyone around to be judging 🙂 On Mythbusters they intertwined page by page 2 phone books and it wouldn’t pull apart at all except with the aid of two tanks. It was ridiculous! I knew those things are dangerous. Eventually I had a snack that hit the spot just right.

November 14th 002

Banana Oats With Butter Toffee Peanut Butter, Cinnamon-Vanilla Frosting, And A Glass Of Silk Nog

This was a spice extravaganza. In the oats was cinnamon and vanilla powder, and in the frosting was cinnamon and Silk eggnog. More eggnog was reserved for the side 🙂 I love it! It needs a little stevia to sweeten up to my level but once it’s there it’s perfect. Why do things like this have to be seasonal? I couldn’t imagine not having this now. Speaking of seasonal…

November 14th 006

Spooky Smores Z-Bar

Things got a little spooky before bed, but no one was harmed 😉 I forgot how good these were and how I need to stock up! They should still be out for a while even though Halloween’s over, right?

This morning I woke up at 8:30 with a little nudge from the alarm. I hung around until I knew the gym would be open, but when I got outside I realized how warm it was. No sun still, but perfect running temp. I changed my plans, grabbed this bar, and put on my Garmin.

November 14th 008

Clif Mountain Mix Mojo

This was sooo good. I wish I had more than 5 minutes to enjoy it. I swear this one had more chocolate chips than the first time I had it, which I wasn’t complaining about. I did a run that I’ve been wanting to do for a while in my mind but never got around to. I went over to East Providence and ran along this lovely path where there were a lot of runners out. I went down to a tree 3 miles out, circled it, came back and circled a little rose garden and repeated. On the way home I ran into Whole Foods to grab a weekender flier which I’m sure confused some people. All in all the run was 9.6 miles and I did it in 1:16:23. That works out to a 7:57 mile average! I knew I was faster outside but wow that was fast. After communicating with my parents and showering I sat down to a late breakfast, or rather a brunch.

November 14th 009

Eggnog Yogurt, Pumpkin Oats With Mighty Maple And White Chocolate Chips

My brunches look shockingly like my breakfasts, and my after dinner snacks. if that were a problem, I’d be fixing it, but my taste buds say no way, Jose. I added a little cinnamon to the eggnog yogurt and it was perfecto! I think I like cinnamon with it better than nutmeg; the nutmeg is a little abrasive.

For today there is some good stuff in store but I’ll let it be a surprise until tomorrow. Instead, go over to Errign’s blog and enter her giveaway for a really nice bracelet. I’m just starting to think about Christmas present and that’d be great to give to someone I know.

Ridiculous And Amazing: Amazing

It would have been ridiculous to leave you hanging with part 1 for too long, so here’s the amazing part of my day yesterday.

We got to the event right on time and the whole place looked stunning:
This was, by all accounts, a foodie heaven. There were even a few other bloggers around, though most were people from corporations or other sources of the media. I really felt like a true food blogger just being there and I can’t wait for more opportunities like that. But I digress, let’s get to the eats!
Believe it or not, these were all just the appetizers and tasters. My easy favorite was the tuna tartar with ahi tuna in a ginger and chile aioli sauce that put my mouth on fire. It was perhaps the peak of ridiculousness, The pecan halibut with local honey mustard sauce was definitely a close runner up. But I did not care for the ritoni or the mahi mahi, both of which were a bit bland. I may have also had a few of these over the course of the night:
Let me set that straight. I had about 3 sips of the apple cider martini(my first alcoholic beverage ever by the way) and about 6 cups of organic decaf coffee. Your boy knows where it’s at. After that came time for the real deal stuff:
These were the courses being judged and they were all worth judging. But my clear favorite of the bunch was the steak with coffee gravy and banana squash puree and whole coffee beans on the top. Oh my god. I could have eaten the entire station of this. I had to shake the chefs hand on my way out and tell him how much in love I was with his dish. It was ridiculous that this didn’t win. The duck with coffee sauce and local produce salad was the judges favorite. That was definitely a strong dish and my 2nd favorite; the only one I didn’t care for was the sea urchin cappuccino, which was basically fish and vanilla cream… in the same cup. There was also a Ben and Jerry’s station with fair trade ice cream including a new flavor!
Unfortunatly, Ben, Jerry, and I are not a friendly crown. Three’s Company, they say. I think it stems from when I ate a pint of Lite Phish Food in one sitting(I‘d like to think this was ridiculous but that would just be an invitation to you all champ eaters to out show me so I won‘t), but ever since it’s been too creamy and thick for my preference, so I passed and went back for 2nds and 3rds on the real food.
Overall it was an amazing night. And the best, most ridiculous part about it was the loot I walked away with:
Umm, let’s see. Full grab bag + red delicious apple + 2 of the biggest yams I’ve ever seen + 2 bags of coffee(and my dad took a 3rd for me). I am well stocked now. Because my class was cancelled, it didn’t make sense for me to go back to Providence, though this clearly showed me how I’d changed. A month ago, I’d have loved any chance to go home; last night I actually would have liked to have gone back to my dorm, in all its food-lacking glory, because that’s where my home is now. But I was not going to make my dad drive for an extra hour plus, so I packed the bare essentials before I left my dorm at 5 and we went to my other home. I was a bit over psyched to find this waiting for me:
The gracious people at Sunland Inc offered to send me some of their nut butter to try. For shipping security reasons, they were sent to my house and arrived on Monday, so I planned on getting them over the weekend anyway. I can not wait to try these; they both sound so good! And banana peanut butter? Does anyone else think that’d go good with a certain recipe of mine?…

No night is complete without a few desserts, and after that kingly dinner I still felt like I needed some grains and nuts in my system:
Clif Mountain Mix Mojo

Deep Chocolate Vitamuffin

Deep Chocolate Vitamuffin

This was my first time trying this Mojo bar. On the front it said “peanuts, almonds, raisins, and chocolate chips” and it absolutely delivered! I hate when a bar sounds like one thing but gives you another, but that was basically the gist of the whole thing and it was amazing. I also might have snuck a little “chocolate cake” from the freezer. I didn’t even defrost it so it was like one big chocolate chip.

It was amazing how the little amount of coffee in all those dishes kept me up an extra 30 minutes. When I woke up 70 minutes later than planned, I was a little very flustered. I didn’t have my good shoes, my contacts burned like hell, and I didn’t have my new ipod or running watch. But it was such a beautiful day in N.E. I couldn’t pass up the chance to run on my home turf. All in all, I did a 7.5 mile course in what I think was 60:50. I didn’t have much time for the 1 oatmeal packet I packed, so I made a breakfast to go:

English Muffin With Raspberry Jam And Cinnamon Vanilla Sunflower Butter, Chocolate Greek Yogurt With Dark Cherries

Who says you have to go to a fancy shmancy party to eat amazing? I was a bit worried about breakfast because I really wasn’t prepared to eat at home, but I made do with what we had. I added unsweetened cocoa to vanilla yogurt to make it chocolatey, and added some frozen fruit(how I missed thee). Thankfully we had 2 english muffins left in the freezer from God knows when, so I toasted one and used some great spreads. See? I can make do with where I am; I don’t always need to pack for 2 weeks, haha 😛

Healthy Halloween? Sign me up! I still need to find a costume, too…

Book Lover

Posted on August 10, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , |

I’m starting not to mind that the boys down here sleep ungodly late because that’s making catching up on email and blogging really easy. Yesterday morning we hopped in the car and went to the local Borders. There was a 40% off sale so you know I had to buy something even though I just bought a book the night before. I got this:

Eat This Not That

Eat This Not That

I loved the Supermarket Survival Guide. It turned me on to loads of new foods(like that oh so delicious and nutritious flax I wish I packed but didn’t because I thought the people at the airport might think it was some weird drug, hahaha). So far this has been OK, but I’ve only read 3 chapters. I never realized the Egg McMuffin was such a relatively good choice. I snacked on a bit o’ trail mix while shopping:

Perk Me Up Trail Mix

Perk Me Up Trail Mix

This stuff alone is turning me into a walnut lover. After that we had burgers for lunch(no pic as the people here think I’m weird enough that I don’t need to photograph everything I eat. I don’t believe I’ve shown you the residential cutie yet:

Snickers

Snickers

This puppy is adorable and could play all day long; mine farts and sleeps all the time. Can we make a trade? Jk, I love my Montana. After lunch I grabbed this from the fridge and we were out the door:

Vanilla Coke Zero

Vanilla Coke Zero

Yeah, this was throwing the no-artificialness thing out the window, but I couldn’t visit the red state without having at least 1 Coke product? And actually I think they use real vanilla flavoring, so this doesn’t go against my first motto in the To Live By section. I drank this in the theater of Kiss Me Kate. My friend Tommy worked as a stagehand for the play and this was the opening weekend. It was fun to get to see his work. The play is about putting on a performance of The Tamer Of The Shrew. It was good, but I’m not a fan of plays within plays; they make my brain hurt!

For dinner, everyone sort of did their own thing, so I reheated the buffalo dip and made a sandwich. Did I mention that stuff was like crack?

Buffalo Chicken Dip Sandwich

We watched some Family Guy. While doing so I ordered Thrive online. 3 books in two days? That doesn’t sound like me. Can’t wait to get it in the mail, though. I also tried this:

Newman's Own Organic Super Dark Chocolate

Newman's Own Organic Super Dark Chocolate

This was the 5th of the 6 Newman’s Own Organic sent me that I’ve tried. I wouldn’t say that this was a super Super Dark Chocolate, but I would say that it was a super Dark Chocolate. Get what I’m saying? It was a really  really delicious standard dark chocolate, but I wouldn’t mind if Newman’s Own Organic bumped up the cocoa % for another bar. The one I have left is their milk chocolate, and once I try that back in MA I’ll be ready to write a full on review for you all. Overall, I’ve been really pleased with Newman’s Own Organic’s chocolate line and can’t wait to share my thoughts/hope you’ll consider buying and enjoying the really good ones too. Per usual, I went to bed way earlier than most others. Well that was ok because it made me feel great and ready to run at 7. I did the same course as yesterday since it’s what I know and clocked 5 miles. Getting back I grabbed this:

Vault Zero

Again, artificialness, but caffeine is good for post-run recovery and I’m on vaca. I was more curious how this tasted more than anything. I think it’s supposed to be Coke’s Diet Mountain Dew. It wasn’t bad but tasted a lot like sugar and water. Then I made myself breakfast:

Toast With SB PB And Banana Spread With Cinnamon, Plain Yogurt With Maple Syrup And Almond Slices

Toast With SB PB And Banana Spread With Cinnamon, Plain Yogurt With Maple Syrup And Almond Slices

The PB and Banana Spread were pretty delicious and genious. The plain yogurt actually had a nice tangy taste, was all-natural, and I was surprised to find it in the back of the fridge. The maple syrup was a slight mistake. I’ve been craving it a bit, so I was excited when I found some in the pantry. It was Aunt Jemima, which is loaded with water, sugar, and HFCS, but I figured I’d put aside my qualms and deal with it. Ha, jokes on me, this stuff doesn’t taste at all like real maple syrup and I can’t believe there are people who have never had real Maine maple syrup and consider this the “real” stuff.

Today no one has to work so we’re planning on going to a place with bumper boats and race cars. Then we might go to Dave And Busters or see a movie, so it should be loads of fun for my last day.
