“If I’m Running, It Ain’t At 6:15”

Posted on April 13, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Good morning! I hope you feel refreshed. I sure do sleeping in. I think I’m still catching up on sleep lost from Saturday night and I knew a 6:15 wake-up was not happening. I was thinking of running soon but I’ll just take a rest day and call the whole thing off.

Oatmeal With Vanilla Peanut Butter

Oatmeal With Vanilla Peanut Butter

Can I change the name of the blog to “Oats and peanut butter”? Because that’s all you’re getting today since that’s all I felt like. I blame the fact that something in our hall smelt like freshly roasted peanuts. God, I can’t pass those up. I tried to recreate some sinfully unnutricious Reese’s peanut butter and had a little too much fun putting it on my oatmeal.

Peanut Butter Ingredients

Peanut Butter Ingredients

Despite the combination of 365 brand peanut butter, Madhava vanilla agave, and vanilla bean sugar, it didn’t really taste that sweet :-/ Maybe I wasn’t using as much sweetener as I thought, but I’ve had the agave in peanut butter before and it tasted better than this. Oh well, there’s always the next bowl!

Oats With Mighty Maple And Milk Chocolate

Oats With Mighty Maple And Milk Chocolate

And there was another bowl. This time, it was a more tried-and-true combination of PB&Co.’s Mighty Maple, which you must know I’m addicted to for a sweet peanut butter, and some Scharffen Berger milk chocolate, which is perhaps the dreamiest I’ve ever had but better to get as a gift than pay for yourself. A little sea salt to this and it was like a gourmet peanut butter cup. Yum.

It felt very good this morning to have time to sip coffee, walk around, check email and blog all before having to do much activity; that’s definitely not how my Tuesday/Thursdays would go otherwise. Eventually, my taste buds led me to yet more oats and peanut butter…

Pumpkin Oats With Butter Toffee Peanut Butter, Pomegranate Yogurt With Orange Dark Chocolate

Pumpkin Oats With Butter Toffee Peanut Butter, Pomegranate Yogurt With Orange Dark Chocolate

I broke open a new can of pumpkin and had to celebrate with Naturally Nutty‘s butter toffee peanut butter. And for a fun yogurt-mess, I started with a fruity flavor of Chobani and added some fruity chocolate.

Vivani Dark Chocolate With Orange And Pomegranate Chobani

Vivani Dark Chocolate With Orange And Pomegranate Chobani

I remembered really loving the combination of pomegranate and citrus chocolate so I thought I’d try it with Vivani’s orange dark chocolate. The combination was good, but not quite magical. Vivani’s dark chocolate is just a little too dark to let the sweetness of the citrus shine. Of course, since I love their 72% dark chocolate, I knew this could never be a bad bar šŸ˜€

And now in between classes I’m the luckiest man and get to take a trip to Whole Foods. I did not realize how low on oat bran I was when I went on Sunday! The answer? Very low! I usually only use Trader Joe’s oatbran, but since he’s 10+ miles away the bulk bins will have to do. And if I put this off any longer I’ll never be back in time for my next class. See you tonight!

Sundae Friday At Ben & Jerry’s

Posted on April 9, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Happy Friday! I can’t get the lyrics “Everybody’s working for the weekend” out of my head; if that was true for you, well good news: it’s here! I have plenty of homework, though, and not much else on my mind for the time besides that; I hope you’ve something more enjoyable on your plate. Speaking of plates(or bowls)…

Maple Tofu And Coconut-Maple Chickpeas Over Spinach

Maple Tofu And Coconut-Maple Chickpeas Over Spinach

For lunch, I threw pre-cubed, firm tofu from the dining hall in the oven after a little maple syrup bath and had that on one side of the plate. On the other, I added a little coconut milk to the remainder of a can of chickpeas and drizzled maple syrup on top, sprinkled with some sea salt. I’m not sure what made me think to put maple syrup and coconut milk together but I’m so glad I did! Seriously, this combination was divine. I loved having this all over spinach, too, because that just soaked up the juices.

Ben & Jerry's

Ben & Jerry's

My afternoon was pretty tediously spent on assignments which I won’t bore you with. Around 3:30, I stepped out into the rain for a field trip to Ben & Jerry’s on Thayer St. Over the past 5-6 weeks, I’ve started a tradition of “Sundae Friday”. This Friday, I couldn’t have been more enthused for a sundae.

Brownie Sundae

Brownie Sundae

While there, I ordered a brownie sundae. First, they heated up a brownie from the display case. I chose Fair Trade Vanilla as my flavor and two small scoops were added on top. On top of that went a parade of hot fudge sauce, finished off with a coating of fresh whipped cream.

Warm Brownie, Fair Trader Vanilla Ice Cream, Fudge Sauce, Fresh Whipped Cream

While I try to avoid gluten and dairy fat because of their difficult digestion, I can digest both. And today my longing for a sundae was beyond absurd, so Ben & Jerry’s it was!

Warm Brownie, Fair Trader Vanilla Ice Cream, Fudge Sauce, Fresh Whipped Cream

And–again–while I don’t love the Ben & Jerry ice cream, I do love their company for their activism andĀ awareness. By the end of 2010 they plan on using only cage-free eggs, and by 2012 have a completely fair trade ingredient list; the vanilla I had today was just the start of that movement. All their flavors already have all-natural ingredients. Even in their scoop shops, I was impressed with the quality of ingredients, certainly not the least of which being fresh whipped cream instead of something more convenient like Reddi Wip.

All Gone

All Gone

While it’s obviously important to eat well and exercise a moderate amount, it’s equally important to treat yourself. And there are other ways to “feel good” about what you eat besides it being healthy. For some, that’s having the 80-20 mindset, and for others that’s veganism; for me, it’s a natural and ethical ingredient list. Have you treated yourself lately? I hope so, or living would get tough! What mindset makes you “feel good”? Of course, at some point we all have to get back on the wagon…

Roasted Broccoli And Sweet Potato, Maple Baked Tofu, Soy Sauce

Roasted Broccoli And Sweet Potato, Maple Baked Tofu, Soy Sauce

Besides the fact that I’m horribly monotonous, this was incredibly tasty. I still had a little maple tofu from Easter to eat up, so I roasted broccoli, sweet potato, and a little extra tofu; I think I made too much tofu in the end, because that dominated the bowl. Oh well, it’s my favorite ingredient, especially when it’s slightly soft and mushy on the inside šŸ˜€

As if the monotony couldn’t get worse, I realized 1 week ago today I had the same dinner, and my afternoon snack was 1/2 a vegan cupcake with ice cream, haha. With any luck, that’d mean I’m eating at Grezzo’s tomorrow and Easter’s on Sunday again; wouldn’t that be nice.

Candy Bar Oatmeal

Posted on April 9, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Shall we start with the obvious? I eat a lot of of candy bars, particularly chocolate bars.

Vivani And Endangered Species 70% Dark Chocolate

Vivani And Endangered Species 70% Dark Chocolate

I’m not complaining. Remember when I said here that I want to aim for at least 1oz of dark chocolate a day? I wasn’t kidding. That would be a “tasting plate” of the last of my Vivani 72% dark chocolate and some Endangered Species organic 70% dark chocolate. This boy knows what he likes. Of course, we can’t eat candy bars all the time.

Oatmeal With Justin's Chocolate Almond Butter And Coconut Milk

Oatmeal With Justin's Chocolate Almond Butter And Coconut Milk

That’s when we make oatmeal taste like candy. Almond Joy, anyone? After reading this post on Heather’s blog, I was reminded how amazing coconut milk and grains are together. I don’t have a rice cooker, so oats will have to do. The richness of organic coconut milk pairs so well with Justin’s chocolate almond butter; it’s beyond words.

Who needs and Almond Joy? I have oatmeal.

Chococonut Nature's Path Bar

Chococonut Nature's Path Bar

I woke up bright and early for a run, because I have so much to get done today I wanted for running to be out of the way. This Nature’s Path Organic barĀ definitely tastes more like a candy than granola bar. I still don’t get much of a coconut flavor out of it :-/

11.5 Miles In 1:39:18

11.5 Miles In 1:39:18

I think the dark chocolate must have worked, because I pushed through 11.5 miles on the tready at a 7.0 pace, which is faster than I was doing before. While I know it’s the running outside that’s boosting my speed, I’d like to think it’s dark chocolate. I can hope, right?

Madhava Vanilla Agave Nectar

Madhava Vanilla Agave Nectar

Madhava recently sent me a box of their agave nectars which I was super excited to try and review. Agave, as you probably know, is an unrefined, vegan sweetener noticeably sweeter than sugar. There’s plenty of scandal around its actual properties I could get into but won’t now. The bottom line for me is that it is just a form of sugar in the end, but one of the ones I’d rather eat than refined white sugar. And when they’re doctored up with flavors like this vanilla, what’s not to love?

Oatmeal With Milk Chocolate And Peanut Butter, Vanilla Greek Yogurt

Oatmeal With Milk Chocolate And Peanut Butter, Vanilla Greek Yogurt

I sweetened plain yogurt with the vanilla agave, and made my own peanut butter with 365 brand smooth and a squirt of vanilla agave. If you like a soft, mellow vanilla tone to flavors, this is perfect for you. It wasn’t as intense as a vanilla bean, but definitely added intrinsic flavor. The peanut butter I’ll tell you tasted just like what you get in a Reese’s cup; the Scharffen Berger milk chocolate and sea salt on top totally enhanced the experience.Ā Let’s compare:

Oatmeal With Milk Chocolate And Peanut Butter

Oatmeal With Milk Chocolate And Peanut Butter

I’ll take my oatmeal, thank you.

What was/is your favorite candy? Growing up, I was always a Reese’s and milk chocolate peanut butterĀ supporter. My all-time favorite had to be the Reese’s Fast Break. A bag of the “minis” would not last long around me. My lifestyle transition to an all-natural diet has been made simpler by Newman’s Own Organics’ milk chocolate peanut butter cups and Sunspire’s milk chocolate coated peanuts. But I still have secret hopes that someday someone will make an all-natural Fast Break, and a few recipes I have yet to try to mimic this.

What’s In The Oil?

Posted on April 8, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , |

I feel like I’m part of that Reddi Wip commercial asking “Oil or cream?” Uhh, you know what, keep both.

Oatmeal With Vanilla Almond Butter

Oatmeal With Vanilla Almond Butter

But what I would like to know is what’s in the oil that we constantly stir(or not) back into or nut butters? Last night, my Naturally Nutty vanilla almond butter was a bit more than thick; it was more like almond meal than butter. I had a thought: Why not take the oil off of plain almond butter and rehydrate this one? That’s what I did, and it worked beautifully. Afterwards, I decided to look a little more into almond oil.

Apparently, it’s not so obscure an ingredient. You can buy pure almond oil from plenty of sources, and among its uses other than cooking is body care. It’s high in monosaturated fats and is good to keep around because the low number of essential fatty acids in it(the omega-3’s that we otherwise want a lot of via fish, flax, hemp, or other fats) means it won’t go rancid quickly, even at room temperature. Did you learn something about almond oil? I sure did!

Birthday Cake And So Delicious Mint Chip Coconut Milk Ice Cream

Birthday Cake And So Delicious Mint Chip Coconut Milk Ice Cream

For sort of a “dormroom sundae”, I had the last piece ofĀ Bob’s Red Mill cake with the last scoop ofĀ So Delicious mint chocolate ice cream. I love finishing Ā things! It gives you an excuse to get more new stuff, right? šŸ˜‰ This was so delicious(pun not intended), but it made me realize that, for all the coconut milk ice cream I’ve had, I don’t think I’ve had “coconut ice cream”. Weird, huh? I’ll have to look for that one next.

I love learning about my readers. For instance, from this post I learned you’re all hardcore when it comes to waking up and getting to the gym! I love it. And today I figured I could be “hardcore” to. I got up at 6:15(which clearly would be sleeping in for a lot of you), grabbed a banana and some water, and hit the streets.

11.55 Miles

11.55 Miles

The weather in the early morning couldn’t be more perfect for running this time of year: slightly cool with a breeze. And it was so much more busy than I would have guessed it to be! Apparently, there are more morning runners in this city than I know. A convoluted path and a stop at Whole Foods later, I went 11.55 miles and whipped up a breakfast for class.

Pumpkin Oats With Butter Toffee Peanut Butter, Vanilla Soy Yogurt With Milk Chocolate Peanut Sunspires

Pumpkin Oats With Butter Toffee Peanut Butter, Vanilla Soy Yogurt With Milk Chocolate Peanut Sunspires

Again, I did the oil trick: A little pure peanut oil in the the butter toffee flavor and it was the rightĀ consistencyĀ once more. Peanut oil is much more commercially available than almond oil for cooking and frying, but it has a lot of the same properties. The major difference I found was that peanut oil is often more fragrant and nutty than almond, at least when it’s unrefined. The yogurt tasted especially good this morning, and I don’t know why; I guess candy on yogurt can’t be bad šŸ™‚

How do you like your peanut butter? Runny? Thick? I definitely hate mine to be runny; I want something thick and wet, like an actual butter and with a sort ofĀ fibrousĀ mouth-feel to it.

Mint Everything And Stress Sleep

Posted on March 23, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

This has got to be quick; I’m done with 1 class but I need to make lunch and eat soon for back-to-back midterms in the afternoon–yikes! Not sure how those will come out…

So Delicious Coconut Milk Mint Chip Ice Cream

So Delicious Coconut Milk Mint Chip Ice Cream

I love mint. There is copious amounts of it in this post, and it disappoints me that it’s so hard to find as a flavor. Should I invest in a mint herb? I’d probably eat all the leaves right off… I kicked off things by having some mint chip so delicious coconut milk ice cream. I love that you can’t taste the coconut in this flavor! Nothing should get in the way of me and my mint šŸ˜‰

Deep Forest Mint Chocolate

Deep Forest Mint Chocolate

But the chocolate in that wasn’t satisfying enough; I need a lot of chocolate to be satisfied, in case you hadn’t noticed. So I had a little bit of Endangered Species deep forest mint right afterwards just to hit that sweet tooth. I’m not crazy about this bar; that’s probably why I’m still working on it after 7 or so months.

Oatmeal With Pepita Sun Butter And 1/2 Raw Mint Chip Macaroon

Oatmeal With Pepita Sun Butter And 1/2 Raw Mint Chip Macaroon

I wasn’t sure if I even could work mint in to my oatmeal, or–if I could–how would it taste? It turned out fantastically. I took 1/2 of my favorite raw macaroon from Emmy’s organics and sprinkled that over plain oatmeal with pepita sun butter. The flavors of vanilla and mint were amazing here. It definitely tasted like dessert oatmeal šŸ™‚ And then I hit the hay early to try and get some good rest.

9 Miles in 1:20:57

9 Miles in 1:20:57

Nothing was pretty about this morning’s run; it was one of those times you can only be thankfully for what you could control and let the rest go from your mind. I’d rather just gloss over it while I (don’t) have the time and say I pushed through 9 miles and then quickly showered and made breakfast.

Pumpkin And Egg Oatmeal With Cinnamon, Vanilla, And Maple Almond Butters, Soy Yogurt With Milk Chocolate Peanuts

Pumpkin And Egg Oatmeal With Cinnamon, Vanilla, And Maple Almond Butters, Soy Yogurt With Milk Chocolate Peanuts

Soy Yogurt With Milk Chocolate Peanuts

Soy Yogurt With Milk Chocolate Peanuts

It was mostly the typical, portable goodies. I added pumpkin and an egg white to my oatmeal to make it a little french-toasty and topped it with Justin’s maple almond butter and Naturally Nutty’s organic cinnamon vanilla almond butter. Can you even process how amazing that flavor combination was? Like french toast, I tell ya. And then there was So Delicious plain soy yogurt(unsweetened) with milk chocolate coated peanuts. Is it bad I would consider those a “healthy fat”? I like to not question and just crush(and then eat!).

Red Delicious Apple

Red Delicious Apple

And now as I’m writing this post I’ve demolished this apple.

Stress Sleep

First up, I’m not saying sleep like you’re stressed. I’m telling you to put a stress on sleep. That’s the best thing you can do for your mental health at a time when you might otherwise be distracted. We’ve all been there: Too much to do and the first thing you’re willing to sacrifice is sleep. But that’s not the answer. In fact, in times when we just need clarity, sleep can be the most beneficial thing for us and boost brain power and concentration in our waking hours. It also helps to “normalize” hunger cues. Despite a 6:15 wake-up call, I prioritized and managed 7 and 1/2 hours of sleep last night to be a sharp thinker for my tests. Between 7 and 8 hours is the recommended amount, but this varies slightly between person to person. How’s your sleeping?

I’m A Little Distracted…

Posted on March 18, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

If I wander off in the writing of this post, it’s because I’m a little distracted.

I’m a little distracted by how warm and sunny it’s been all day; where is this weather when I have the time to enjoy it? I hope it’s around tomorrow so I can soak up the sun on a walk to get groceries.

Grass-Fed Burger, Ketchup, Pickles, Sweet Potato Hash

I’m a little distracted by how delicious this meal was. Don’t you love “burger weather”? Today was very much “burger weather”, so I cooked up an old 85/15 and made a sweet potato hash to go along with some pickles; the trick here is to undercook the potatoes so they still have some chew and eat like a meal.

I was a little distracted all through my History class, mostly because I was playing a game and not paying very close attention(whoops!). To be fair, I think the professor was distracted by life because he got on a tangent about how the Bozo The Clown episode of The Mary Tyler Moore show is the funniest comedy ever. Ummm, how great to be up on your references like that…

Zevia Twist

I got distracted by my sweet tooth and grabbed a Zevia Twist in between classes. When I say “grab”, I mean I had to go back to my room; if only more places would carry these. I love the simple ingredients–just 5, which I recognize!

I might have just gotten a little distracted and started to “Do the twist, do the twist. A-do the, a-do the, a-do the twist.” OK, maybe I’m even worse with my pop culture references than my professor…

Honest Foods Choco Peanut Butter Bar

I was distracted and enthralled in Latin class by how much this bar by Honest Foods tastes like a chocolate chip blondie! Seriously, that hit a craving I was needing to be hit. The wrapper says it’s manufactured somewhere with wheat but it looked gluten-free to me.

I’m currently distracted by how true everything in this post about eating vegetarian rings true for my own life. Re: 74, my ground beef was dripping blood on my dorm floor last night while I was making patties. I must be dedicated to my (ethical) meat cravings.

Vanilla Chobani With Milk Chocolate Peanuts And Sunflower Seeds

I got distracted thinking about making raw vegan brownies this weekend so much so that I needed to have sunflower seeds and chocolate now. I put some milk chocolate peanut sunspires and sunflower seeds on top of a vanilla Chobani. I think I forgot how much like desserts vanilla Chobani taste while keeping the sugars in checks–definitely something good for me as I don’t want to be shoving stevia in everything.

I got distracted while cooking dinner thinking about how Lady Gaga and Johnny Wier would dress their child if they got married and had a kid(and that’s a HUGE if there). What an odd thought.

Caramelized Brussels, Country Style Chicken Sausages, Maple Tofu

Caramelized Brussel Sprouts, Country Style Chicken Sausages, Maple Tofu

I’m distracted right now thinking of how long it’s been since I’ve had brussels sprouts and how much I missed them! This was a lot of your “favorite green vegetable”, and I can’t say I don’t love them, but they’re so rare at the dining hall. I cooked them with some pasture butter and 2 country style Al Fresco chicken sausages–yum! The maple tofu was the perfect sweetness to top it all off.

I’ve been too distracted all along to mention that my coffee intake today has skyrocketed compared to other days this week. Uhhh, whoops? 8-|

I wish I’d be distracted tonight by Survivor but apparently that won’t be on šŸ˜¦ What to do, oh, what to do? More ice cream?

I’m distracted by the thought of winning this awesome prize from theĀ gorgeousĀ blogger, Holly.

And, lastly, I’m distracted because this would have been my maternal grandfather’s birthday if he were still with us. 82 wouldn’t have known what to do with him šŸ˜€

What’s distracting you today? Or are you annoyingly focused? Don’t even tell me if it’s the latter.

Running On Borrowed Time

Posted on March 18, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Like Kermit the frog said, “It ain’t easy being green”. I think mint ice cream would share the same sentiment. It is not a green food by nature, and the all-natural kind doesn’t even try. That doesn’t mean it won’t taste as green or good on St. Patrick’s Day, right?

Mint Chip So Delicious Coconut Milk Ice Cream

Tastes yummy by me! Like I mentioned, I picked up a new So Delicious ice cream to try: Mint Chip Coconut Milk. I love mint and wish it were a more popular flavor. This ice cream not dissapoint; it was minty and fresh, and the chocolate in it was essentially my coconut oil chocolate! Delicious. By the way, I know I’ve had plenty of new ice creams lately I don’t have page reviews for. In part this is because they’ve all been bought with my money so I haven’t felt an obligation towards the company; I also simply haven’t had time. But if any flavor has a particular following or anyone wants to email me individually, I’d be happy to share the details and maybe even eventually getting around to formal pages.

Chocolate Hazelnut Butter And Fudge Mint Cookies

Have I mentioned I love mint? I always overkill it in desserts, too, which makes no one else in my family want to eat it. I’ve been told my mint brownies taste like mouthwash šŸ˜€ I don’t mind if it means I get more! So, naturally I thought to add some mint cookie to my oats last night, as I simply wasn’t over the flavor.

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Chocolate Hazelnut Butter And A Fudge Mint Cookie

Holy yum! The combo of Justin’s chocolate hazelnut butter and the cookie balanced soooo well. Of course, these are wheat cookies with gluten; they’re also really small and this was at least 1/10 the size of the one that did me in on Sunday so I wasn’t sweating eating it too much.

1/2 Perfect Foods Cranberry Crunch Lite Bar

On Mythbusters, they were testing all the alcohol related myths, including hangovers and what not. I’m glad my night of ice cream and oats made me feel a lot better than the Mythbusters, because all I needed was 1/2 a Perfect Foodscranberry crunch lite and I was good to go to the gym at 6:35.

11 Miles In 1:37:24

Tuesdays and Thursdays are notoriously tight for me,Ā time-wise, with a class at 9, and that’s running moderate amounts. Today, I was so tired of doing 10 miles day after day I decided I felt like 11. Was today any better for time? Not so much. But I busted them out in 1:37:24 and then briskly walked back to my room to shower, change, cook, and get to class.

Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Vanilla Cake Mix

Breakfast also saw the return of one of my favorite Bob’s Red Mill products. At first I tried making an individual cupcake by cooking a serving with 1/2 tablespoon coconut oil and 1/2 an eggwhite. That came out… interesting and not at all fluffy, and now resides in my trash can.

Oatmeal With Chocolate Almond Butter, Vanilla Cake Yogurt With Milk Chocolate Peanuts

Vanilla Cake Yogurt With Milk Chocolate Peanuts

I still managed to sneak the cake mix in there by pouring about 1/2 a serving straight into my vanilla chobani. This was so good! It was a little grainy, and definitely a sweet treat. The salty peanut candies on top made it even better, which I didn’t think would be possible. And then there was more Justin’s chocolate butter–this time almond–on the oats. When I got to class I realized I had none of my translation or text–bad for a Greek class šŸ˜¦ I ran(literally) back to my room, grabbed it, and got back. If in no other way, at least running will help me in life as a courier.

Happy Thursday! I’m very happy it’s Thursday. Clearly, my mind is gone, and Thursday’s the last day of the work-week for me so I can really relax tonight. And as we all know Survivor’s on Thursdays. To quote the Black Eyed Peas, “I got a feeling that tonight’s gonna be a good night”.

Oopsies, Daisies, And Half Marathons

Posted on March 12, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

I was going to right a post about added sugars(which were not my crowning glory the past 14 hours), but then IĀ accidentallyĀ ran a half marathon. Oops. I’m hoping that’s more interesting, as I look at the other “oopses” that led to that happy accident.

Peanut Butter Q.Bel Wafer Roll, Coconut Oil Chocolate

As you must know, I’m addicted to Survivor; I’ve watched every season! Last night, I was so enthused to see a reward for–what else–chocolate. Apparently, I must think I’m a contestant this season, because I went ahead and made a chocolate plate of my own to rival the prize. Oops. It was certainly tasty, though. The coconut oil chocolate got a little soft at room temp, but was fine with a spoon to finish it off.

Peanut Butter Q.bel Wafer Roll

I forgot how much I loved these peanut butter wafer rolls from Q.bel;; I should read my own reviews more often, haha. They taste so much more peanut buttery than you’d think, and it’s all natural! I only wish they’d be gluten-free, which I forgot they weren’t. Oops. As you can(and will) see, I’m awful about eating how I should.

Oatgurt With Vanilla Chobani And Nuttzo

I’ve never been one for oatgurt, but I thought I’d give it a shot since I was craving oatmeal and greek yogurt. Pouring salt over all of this was a BIG oops and made the yogurt taste nasty. After I scooped that off, it wasn’t half-bad, but still wasn’t half good. At least the Nuttzo didn’t have any added sugar thankfully? I’ll take a win in the nutrition department where I can get it. Perhaps this wasn’t such a big flop since it really nutrient-loaded me for the morning.

Fudge Mint Back To Nature Cookies

I set my alarm purposefully 10 minutes earlier, knowing if I wanted to get a long run in(still unsure how long), this would be easier than extending it 10 minutes later. While sipping some coffee and changing, I snacked on 3 Fudge Mint Back To Nature cookies. What can I say? When a cookie is a 10/10, you’ve just gotta munch on it šŸ™‚ Plus, I was sure those added sugars would help me just a little bit(Note: These are also not a gluten free food, proving moreso my awfulness in that respect. Oops).

13.1 Miles In 1:57:39

I think it helped me to run 13.1 miles that there was always somebody else on the treadmills around me; that kind of atmosphere is so much more encouraging. I had planned for 12, but when I got there and it wasn’t even 9 o’clock, I figured why not go for it?My record(also on the treadmill) is 1:46:28. For my race(in 16 days), I’d hope to run it in 1:40, though won’t beĀ disappointedĀ by anything. It’ll also be my furthest distance ran outside!

Chocolate Avocado Pudding, Vanilla Chobani With 1/2 A Gluten Free Cupcake And Butter Toffee Peanut Butter

Vanilla Chobani With 1/2 A Gluten Free Cupcake And Butter Toffee Peanut Butter

And then there was refueling. As silly as it may sound, I didn’t have oats this morning in part because I didn’t want to have to look at one of those green plastic bowls again šŸ˜¦ I can’t wait to buy a real one. Who needs oats, anyway, when you have flavors like these? I topped a vanilla chobani with my last Bob’s Red Mill gluten free vanilla cupcake–I think that deserves a moment of silence right there–and some butter toffee peanut butter ala Naturally Nutty. I made my standard chocolate avocado pudding with Xagave in place of stevia. After 13.1 miles of rough labor, I’d rather give my body a caloric sweetener rather than risk confusing it. Now if only I had measured or used a littleĀ digressionĀ on adding that sugar :-/

So there you have it: Fueling for an accidental half marathon. I think this goes along with the emphasis in this post that if you’re a regular exercisor, you really need not worry about overdoing it. Of course, there are exceptions to be said about any statement. But extra energy sure will show out in your workout. Now, you can enter here for aĀ raw chocolate giveaway, or here for a Fresh & Fit carry container! And even though I don’t have classes on Friday(whoopee!) I have somewhere I need to be soon and amĀ under-preparedĀ for(Oops). Happy Friday!

Oh Really?

Posted on March 7, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Some things recently have made me question the sanity of certain humans(myself included). I stumbled on a Mythbusters marathon last night and watched it for 3 hours. I love that show, but I have to wonder who’s funding The Study For How Much Popcorn It Takes To Blow Out A Window. Oh really?

Chocolate Avocado Pudding With Coconut + Vanilla Macaroon

I took my mind off those things by making some chocolate avocado pudding made with almond milk andĀ NuNaturals‘ vanilla stevia. I don’t know why, but this particularly batch tasted amazing On top I broke up my lastĀ Emmy’s Organics Coconut + Vanilla macaroon. These had SUCH a good vanilla flavor to them; if you can find them, I’m jealous and would highly recommend grabbing them if only to flaunt in my face.

While I was doing that, I was of course playing around on the internet.Ā I haven’t even been away fromĀ Facebook for very long, and already I wonder things every time I log in. Like since when can you become a fan of any random object such asĀ brownies? And for the love of God if I get one more invitation to be a farmer, or a vampire, or a vampire farmer…

Better Than Roasted Sprouted Almond Butter

I wasn’t cute sure whether to have oatmeal or more pudding after that. I debated this for 10 minutes like it was a matter of life or death. Oh really? Do I have nothing better to do? Apparently not. And then after decided I wanted pudding, I realized I was out of avocadoes. Oatmeal it was!

Oatmeal With Sprouted Almond Butter And Sweetened Chocolate Coconut

Call me coconut-crazy if you want; I mixed some organic unsweetened shredded coconut with raw cocoa powder and raw vanilla agave. Oh really? Did I just discover how to make quick and sloppy macaroon shreds? Because that tasted a little too good to be true… Concerning theĀ sprouted almond butter byĀ Better Than Roasted, it took me a good 5 minutes to decide what it tasted like: raw almonds. I know–aren’t I a genious? But after chocolate almond butter, roasted almond butter, and white chocolate cherry almond butter, this was definitely unique and delicious in its own right. I’m sure you’re asking yourself, “Oh really? He got in to Brown?”

Maple Butter

I woke up at 4 and couldn’t get back to bed. I knew I was hungry, but was hoping I could shake it off and fall back to sleep. Eventually, I told myself, “Evan, you’re an A——. That’s right, you’re an athlete. If you’re hungry now at 4:30, for God sake’s stop being lazy and eat something.” Clearly, I also thought that maple butter, which is pure sugar, would be another good choice for falling back to sleep. Oh really?

French Toast Oatmeal

I went downstairs to the basement to make french toast oatmeal. And you know what? This was actually perfectly cooked; apparently the secret is to do it at a ridiculous hour, half in the dark, and not involved–go figure. And the secret to a “keeper” of a photo? Moving the red Solo cups out of the way.

Morning Apple

I can say that, after that, I fell asleep nicely. And for the first time in longer than I can remember,Ā I overslept. I got up, looked at the clock, and realized it was 9:30! OK, can you oversleep when you really don’t have any “plans”? Probably not. But that’s later than I prefer. I decided the weather looked perfect for another outdoor run, gobbled down this apple, and hit the outdoors.

9.55 Miles In 1:20:53

Before I get into the run, I’d like to point out that’s 3 1/2 minutes faster than yesterday, meaning I shaved off 20 seconds per mile. Wow! Where did that come from? When I looked at this, my first thought was Oh really? Apparently! It was just so gorgeous out again how could I not get into it? I also had motivational support via a country playlist with Taylor Swift telling me “These things will change” and Brooks & Dunn that cowgirls(and cowboys?) don’t cry.

March/April Whole Deal Flyer

Can I also mention my favorite part was running in to Whole Foods, grabbing the new Whole Deal flyer, and running out? I think I got odd looks, but it was worth it. There are fantastic coupons in here, including $1 off their 365 peanut butter! With only peanuts and salts forĀ ingredients, it’s delicious, and that’s a steal. When I first heard about that sale, I had to thing “Oh really? Have they lost their mind?”

Oatmeal With Chocolate Cherry Peanut Butter And Coconut Milk, Cherry Vanilla Greek Yogurt With Cherry Dark Chocolate

And then I made breakfast, right at 11:50. I’m glad to have slipped under the wire; I’d have hated to have missed this and then feel like I should eat “lunch”; breakfast is better anyway. I sweetened the plain 2% yogurt with cherry butter and vanilla agave in an effort to keep stevia out of my breakfast. For the oatmeal, some chocolate cherry peanut butter and coconut milk was perfect! Coconut milk keeps forever if you put it in a thick plastic container sealed off in the fridge. And it makes fats more readily available as a fuel source! Perfect for fueling.

I have to sound like “Much to do, gotta run” but… much to do, and gotta run(not literally)! There’s a Vitamix presentation at the Whole Foods nearby today I might get to see(along with some friendly faces), and my grocery list is turning in to aĀ catalog. But first, I need to ask, breakfast, lunch, or dinner? Clearly, breakfast foods are my favorite!

Go Ahead, Overdo It

Posted on March 3, 2010. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

It’s snowing! I just had to let that one out. It’s not going to accumulate to much, if anything, but I’m always so happy to see the white stuff šŸ™‚

Last night, after posting, I went to the dining hall to grab some yogurt. At dinner you can use your meals to pay for some instead of points, and they sell Chobani. I couldn’t decide what/how many I would reasonably need without filling my fridge unnecessarily. I decided to grab 3: 2 pomegranates and a vanilla(they never have any plain). I thought this might have been overdoing it. Clearly, as you’ll see all 3 in this post, I was wrong.

Pomegranate Chobani With Organic Endangered Species Dark Chocolate

While watching The Biggest Loser, I made a reasonably healthy snack of pomegranate Chobani with a few squares of Endangered Species‘ organic dark chocolate. Not to be confused with this one I reviewed, these came from a full sized bar my dad paid for from Whole Foods. If I were reviewing it, I’d actually score it slightly less than the 1.4oz; the flavors the same, but I really like the notion of a quality, organic chocolate bar that’s single-sized. HUGE chocolate bars seem to be one place where overdoing it is not a cool thing :-/

I loved The Biggest Loser last night and that it’s back on air. The challenge in the first half was pretty great, if you ask me. But really, what’s 2000 calories when you’re in a gym all day with Bob and Jillian? I feel like the contestants have probably eaten that much extra junk at one time without even realizing it. They might have overdone it a bit, but at least they were self aware and could kick their own butts next time.

Carob Chip Perfect Foods Bar

I started winding down the evening with a carob chip perfect foods bar. I still enjoyed this one, but I think I got even less of a carob/chocolate flavor than the first one I ate. Maybe carob just doesn’t work for my tongue? That’d be weird. I do seem to love my chocolate šŸ˜€ Still, the honey and peanut butter flavors in this are fantastic. After a “meal replacement” bar and some light history reading, I’d have thought I’d be full and ready for bed…

Pomegranate Chobani With Chocolate Covered Almonds

Apparently not! Last night, I really felt like I could eat a horse and a half. And I’ve felt like this a couple of nights looking back. Taking the rest day really helped me realize what I need: more time off, and more fuel. A lot of exercise kills hunger(ironic, isn’t it?) so I’ve come to think been listening to my hunger too well in the morning and throughout the day until it strikes right back at night; the brain can know best.Ā At least in my repeat of pomegranate Chobani I tried something knew.

Organic Chocolate Covered Almonds

I just love Tierra Farm and all they’ve sent me that I’ve tried so far, so I was happy to try another new thing from them. The fact that these were chocolate covered made me 10 times happier šŸ˜€ These chocolate covered almonds were nothing fantastic, per say; they tasted a lot like chocolate and almonds, but didn’t really pull together the way macaroni and cheese do. But I loved that they’re organic and vegan. I used to eat up Emerald’s cocoa almonds until I saw sucralose(aka Splenda) on the ingredient list–not on my nuts! I would happily take these in lieu of those.

Apple And Coffee

This morning, I woke up knowing that I very well could need more time off than 1 day to recover from overtraining. That being said, I felt pretty good. I wasn’t particularly hungry from last night’s greek yogurt feasting, but I grabbed an apple. In light of overdoing things, an apple was the least I could eat before a good run. I can’t wait until it’s actually bright and sunny when I wake up again!

11 Miles In 1:38:49

On my run this morning, I truly felt fantastic. At first I was a little nervous, not because of anything running related but because some television channels changed their a.m. line-up; what the heck? I was gone for 1 day! Back to the run, this was where overdoing it really paid off. I felt energized, relaxed, and ready. I was only planning for 8-10 but overdid it and went for 11, partially because I felt so damn good and also because Lady Antebellum was on The Today Show performing then.

This gave me time to think about how there might really be 3 types of bloggers. I don’t mean to offend anyone; on the contrary, I think there’s a lot to be praised about some of you. I’m sorry in advanced if this gets taken any other way.

Type 1: You eat “healthy” and are extremely athletic–an energized and bubbly person. You know any fuel you take in will go to good use, and the overdoing it is just good fueling.

Type 2: You eat “healthy” and workout to a moderate extent to lower your weight or for some other health related reason that you need to get control of.

Type 3: You yourself would call yourself type 2 when a lot of your fantastic readers realize just how healthy you are and would easily put you as type 1.

95% of the blogs I read I would say are type 1 or type 3. It kills me to read a blogger who I think looks perfectly happy and healthy and is amazingly athletic talk about wanting to lose weight or be another way. Restricting your diet when you’re an active person is restricting all that you can be. So go ahead! Overdo it! And the results will show up in the gym, or on the scale but in a good way.

Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Vanilla Cake Mix

Breakfast was another thing I gave a lot of thought to on the treadmill. In particular, there’s one nifty bowl I’ve been wanting to give a try ever since picking this up and baking with it over the weekend.

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Butter Toffee Peanut Butter, Birthday Cake Chobani

Birthday Cake Chobani

My real birthday isn’t for about a month, but I can celebrate early, right šŸ˜‰ In the vanilla Chobani, I added 1/2 a serving of the mix, and then crumbled 1/2 a cupcake on top. Yum! This wasn’t quite as good as any cake-flavored ice creams I’ve tried(I’ve yet to find a really good, all-natural brand :-/), but it was really really yummy all things considering. And then, because that had only about 1/4 tablespoon coconut oil in all of it, I had pumpkin oatmeal with a big plop of Naturally Nutty butter toffee peanut butter on it. I just opened this 15oz jar a few nights ago and I’m already thinking I might need to place a new order soon! Great…

OK, so maybe if you’re lined up to be a contestant on The Biggest Loser, you shouldn’t overdo it; otherwise, dig in. All that fuel will show up as performance. Now the one area in my life I haven’t been overdoing it this week seems to be homework, particularly History. So if you’ll excuse me…
