I’m just going to keep telling myself I don’t have a problem with chocolate, and then it won’t be true, right?

Xocai Xobiotic Square And Q.bel Milk Chocolate Wafer Bars

After Ghost Whisperer I made a bit of a chocolate snack plate. I had a Xocai Xobiotic sqaure for my dark chocolate tooth and my 2nd probiotic source of the day. If only all chocolate had probiotics in it, wouldn’t that be grand? Then, for my milk chocolate tooth, I sampled the Q.bel milk chocolate wafer bar. Holy yum! My, how I loved this, and usually I’m not even a fan of rice crisps! I think they were tolerated well because they went so well with the thin wafers. I loved how the chocolate basically melted as it touched my mouth–it couldn’t even wait to get in. While I was watching The Best Thing I Ever Ate, I kept the Cookie Friday celebration rolling.

The Raw Bakery Chocolate Chip Cookie

Goat Milk Yogurt With Raspberry Jam And A Raw Chocolate Chip Cookie

First of all, would you believe I didn’t have oatmeal for once? Maybe it’s a sign of the apocalypse; better hold on. For some reason, goat milk yogurt with raspberry sounded better(especially when garnished with a cookie ;-)). This cookie was by far the best raw cookie I’ve ever eaten. Granted, that’s not fighting too many, but still kudos to The Raw Bakery! The base tasted very “vanilla”–not nutty–even though the ingredient list makes me think this wasn’t overdone with sugar(or, agave nectar as it were).

This morning I decided to give the strength training a break and stick with the cardio and 200 flights. I should check to see what alternative workouts we have On Demand to do to switch things up. Then again, I am a creature of habit and that yogurt-for-oatmeal thing was enough change for me for a week. For breakfast I had a tooth for–would you believe it–chocolate?

Greek Yogurt With Milk Chocolate Peanut Sunspires

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Walnut Butter And Pumpkin Cream Cheese

After seeing that episode of Good Eats about Alton’s diet, I feel like he would be so proud of my breakfasts ūüôā The oatmeal was like a comforting return to an old friend, even though I had to scrape the mold off the top of the cream cheese(ewww! But I’m determined to eat what I can of it). For the yogurt, I mixed 4.5oz non-fat with 1oz full fat for a nice, creamy 2%, which went great with the milk chocolate and just a pinch of salt. And now I feel as though I’ve had my candy fix for the day(did anybody believe me? No? K, good. Just checking).

We were planning on recreating a healthy version of American Chop Suey(*drool*) tomorrow for lunch, but now my mom’s going to a cousin’s birthday party ūüė¶ We’ll squeeze that recipe in sometime soon. And maybe I can milk a meal at a restaurant out of all of this? Hehe.

Since I know you all love Chobani Giveaway’s, here’s another

Fusions

Posted on December 28, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Somethings were just meant to be: Peanut Butter and Jelly, Lucy and Ricky, Me and Emma Watson, Ross and Rachel–the list goes on and on. And the truth is that these pairs work better together more than on their own. So yesterday I was looking for things that worked better together than on their own.

Pecan Butter With Cashews

My first inspiration came from Artisana’s Pecan Butter. I really enjoyed the hint of cashews in this to make it more of an artisan nut butter so I thought I’d try to replicate that with the pecans I picked up from the natural food store and some Oh Nuts! cashews. I won’t reveal the “secret” ratio but I think this came out damn good and would get a 10/10 from my own scale. I will reveal that I roasted them all so the flavor would be more pungent, but I didn’t add any salt.

Butterscotch Peanut Butter

Butterscotch and peanut butter are definitely another flavor combo that was meant to be. I think Kath would agree with the number of times I’ve seen butterscotch chips on her oatmeal. For this I used 16oz raw peanuts I dry roasted, more butterscotch extract than I’d care to know, stevia, and 4 teaspoons brown sugar. The flavor is definitely unique; it’s not my favorite but it seems like one of those I might randomly crave at some point. After I played around on nutritiondata.com, it was time for dinner.

Thai Curry Chickpeas With Hot Sauce, Brussels Sprouts, Buffalo Bleu Chips

I think Frank’s Red Hot sauce + anything is amazing(as attested by multiple bloggers around here). My mouth was on fire after all of this. There was also lemon-thyme salmon on the table but a) I didn’t think the lemon-thyme and hot sauce would work and b) I didn’t feel like having meat this meal.

After dinner, as disgusting as it was, I was determined to find the receipt for the food processor so that I can work at getting a non-broken one. It just so happened to be in the same bag of trash which my mom threw out ALL of her receipts from balancing her checkbook. This was really like finding a needle in a haystack but we got it.

Macy's Receipt

A little worse from ware but proof is proof. I think I continued to wash my hands for another 20 minutes to get off the coffee grounds and tofu, and then turned on I Love Lucy and picked up more fusion food.

Xocai Nugget And Power Square

Obviously, chocolates bestie is more chocolate, so I tried out Xocai’s nugget and power square. If you want to get technical, both of these are also fused with dried acai berries to increase their ORAC value, but really chocolate is chocolate. I liked these, but surprisingly they weren’t dark enough for me at the time. They tasted like a good 55% but I was expecting them to be more bitter-sweet. After a few good I Love Lucy episodes(a timeless show), I found more fusion in the kitchen.

Barney butter And Peach Amaretto Jam

Oatmeal With Barney Butter And Peach Amaretto Jam

These were soooo meant to be together. The jam was a Christmas present to my parents and is unreal; it has so much amaretto flavor! And it’s totally giving me ideas for more nut butters. The Barney Butter oddly¬†separated¬†in the squeeze pack so half was really hard and have was liquid. At least it still tasted OK.¬†Lastly I had a 2nd daily probiotic source and hit the hay.

Pop Culture Chocolate Chip Granola Bar

This morning I must have been lazy because I slept in 40 minutes. It is vacation, after all ūüôā But then I got “in the mood” for a good workout. I did my core with

  • 240 varying arm rotations
  • 5 sets of 7 chair swings
  • 40 squats(thinking back, I might have forgotten this one)
  • 70 rowers’ arms
  • 40 second pose hold
  • 70 standing marches
  • 100 sit ups
  • 100 air kicks
  • 70 tricep dips
  • 70 side crunches, both sides
  • 100 crunches
  • 50 second crunch hold
  • 40 push-ups(a little messy by this point)

After that I threw in 100 flights of stairs, which took about 30 minutes but flew by to some good ipod tunes. After that I knew exactly what was on the menu for breakfast.

Vegan Cinnamon Raisin Roll With Pecan Butter And Brown Sugar Vegan Butter Spread

Peanut Flour Yogurt

Pecan butter, earth balance, and brown sugar were most definitely all meant to co-exist(We are the woooorrld. We are the futurrre). I’ve come to think there is nothing better than to be able to think “I’m eating homemade pecan butter” and know it’s your home that made it! Now I just need to figure out how to homemake a cinnamon roll. Peanut flour and greek yogurt were equally meant to be for a 1-2 protein punch. Today’s agenda most definitely includes a trip to Macy’s to try and get a new food processor piece, and hopefully¬†addressing¬†1 or 2 recipes on my to-do list.

Christmas Eve 2009

Posted on December 26, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

Oh my goodness have the past few days felt rushed. If you can’t tell(though I know you can :-)), I’m a complete homebody and since I haven’t been home for very much for the past 3 days, I’ll definitely be enjoying the couch all day long. But I think the last time I left you was Christmas Eve with brownies in the oven. After those came out, I started thinking about the day and realized I might not get another chance for a 2nd source of probiotics.

Xocai Xobiotic Square

Thankfully, Xocai sent me some of their healthy chocolate(yes, isn’t that music to your ears?) to review and one of them happens to be the Xobiotic Square, fortified with 300 million viable bacteria cells and your DV of flavonoids. Once I got over those factoids I could not get over the taste; this was such a scrumptious piece of dark chocolate, you’d never think twice because you’d be too busy enjoying it.

At 3:30 we left the house for Christmas Mass. It was packed. We were stuck standing in the back. There were even 2 masses going on at the same church and both were filled with Christeasterers like us. There was a little Latin that people sung but didn’t understand which amused me(I’m clearly such a nerd). Afterwards, we hit the road to go to my mom’s cousins family party. On the way I had a festive snack.

Luna Chocolate Peppermint Stick

‘Tis the season, after all. Of course, it was nice to see family I see only a few times a year. And of course, since they’re Italian, they cooked enough food for 30 even though there was only about 12-15 of us.

Entree Spread

Unfortunately, my options were limited. Very limited. Everything had meat in it or was meat, or had something else artificial. There were 7 things through the night that I could eat, and then some of that wasn’t very appealing anyway. I stuck with what we brought to the table.

Lemon Thyme Salmon, Roasted Broccoli

My mom liked the lemon-thyme¬†combination¬†I made for her on her birthday enough to make it again here. I took a moderate amount of that(though I ended up being the only one) and a lot of broccoli. That was definitely my “nibbler” item of the night; I think I ate at least 2/3rds of the whole batch for the crowd! After our present exchange, we had dessert.

Dessert Spread

Same situation, mostly: A lot of what I couldn’t or wouldn’t have(even the coffee was regular–not decaf–so I stayed clear of that) and I stuck with what we brought.

Peanut Butter And Chocolate Biscotti

These biscotti were definitely a hit with my family. Really? How could they not be. We ended up staying, waiting for another relative to show up but eventually we just had to leave; I think we were all still exhausted from our NYC trip. When I got home I was starving because I hadn’t really eaten much other than broccoli.

Milk Chocolate Advent Candies

Not like this filled me up but an¬†obligatory¬†treat. It’s so sad the advent is over; these were tasty! I might have to make chocolate after dinner an everyday tradition anyway.

Oatmeal With NuttZo

That was much much better. I think the valencia peanuts must make NuttZo so sweet because it has no added sugar though you might think it’s almost a flavored nut butter it’s so delicious. I was watching the last bit of It’s A Wonderful Life to make it a very merry Christmas Eve… until I found Grey’s Anatomy. Somethings are just merrier than that movie ūüôā

Eat For Your Brain

Posted on December 21, 2009. Filed under: Daily Update, Product Review | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

If anyone ever said brainfood couldn’t be yummy, they clearly didn’t know what they were talking about. Some of the best foods are also the best foods for you.

Chocolate Pudding With Dark Chocolate Peppermint Newman Cup

Ok, I’m not actually sure if peppermint is brain food, but it definitely doesn’t hurt? And this blogger eats a lot and seems pretty darn smart to me so it must do something. But mostly I was just eating this to get probiotic #2 of the day… tasty, delicious probiotic number 2. But was the center of the Newman cup supposed to be like a powder? It might have been a bit old.

Advent Chocolate And Omega Xocai Square

Then there was brain food via chocolate. Of course, my 20th piece of advent calender(I’ll be so sad when this goes away :-() and a new product: Xocai’s Omega Square. Each piece of chocolate has 70mg of DHA Omega-3’s(the kind we need) and is well balanced for the 2:1 Omega-6:Omega-3 ratio we as Americans should be getting. I definitely enjoyed the chocolate. If you’ve taken supplements before that have been fishy, this was nothing like those; the only “funny” tastes in it were orange peel and flaxseeds, which weren’t so much “funny” as just unexpected.

Banana Oatmeal With Maple Cashew Butter, Raw Walnuts, And Maple Syrup

I’ll admit I was upset when Russell lost on Survivor; I spent all season hating him but he played so well he deserved to win. Anyway, after getting over that, I made more brain food. I topped banana oats with Tierra Farm‘s raw organic walnuts and maple cashew butter. I thought I’d give the cashew butter another chance; it still wasn’t very mapley, though continues to impress me as a nice cashew butter. I’ve never been a fan of raw walnuts, but I gave Tierra Farm’s a try anyway; they were just as dry as I expected, but at the very least I got good brain food, right?

This morning I fully intended to try another workout but when I got up I was so sore. Yesterday’s really pushed my limit and left my legs shot. After trying something out, I decided better to push it off to the afternoon or never than overwork anything. Instead I mulled about and dreamed up a brain food breakfast.

Pumpkin Oatmeal With Maple Almond Butter

Pumpkin Oikos With Me & Goji Granola

Goji berries I think are a brainfood? They have plenty of antioxidants, at least. And my¬†[me] & goji granola is packed with them(and dried blueberries and raspberries–yum!). Today felt like an almond butter morning so I had some of justin’s nut butter. While eating I pondered everything I have to do today and it turned out to be a lot! Whoever said vacation was for resting did not know me. I’ve made a schedule to keep myself on top of my game.

9-12: Internet work
12-1: Shower and make lunch
1-2: Eat, watch Days, and more internet work
2-3:30: Bake for Christmas Eve and figure out mom birthday plans
3:30-5: Workout?
5-5:50: Internet work
5:50: Start dinner

For Christmas Eve I’m baking an intermediate(aka, this could get messy) cookie recipe. I’m hoping it goes well, though honestly a bit intimidated. Care to know more as it happens? Follow me on Twitter. Also(and this is my favorite thing about blogworld), I need some advice from you: Got any good workouts to do at home you suggest or can point me towards? Bring them on. Also, for dinner I have sirloin roast, butternut squash, brussels sprouts, broccoli, and sweet potatoes to work with. Suggestions? Edit: And whole wheat mac and cheese(from a box). And no, I don’t intend to make ALL of these, just 2 or 3.

An amazing machinery giveaway!

And a Plush Puff Marshmallow giveaway!
